    I've had a Bermuda lawn for about a year and a half now. They thrive in sunlight and need regular rain. I've about perfected cutting. I've found that 5 days between mowing is perfect for my environment here in North Alabama.
    Perhaps the best thing about Bermuda is, unless you just want to, you don't really ever need to overseed. The grass overseeds itself like he illustrated in his drawing.

    • @stevanvelazquez2043

      The grass won't overseed itself, especially if it's a hybrid. It'll just spread via rhizomes and stolons.

      I can't believe you can get Zoysia growing up there, that's wild. I've noticed it pairs very well with Fine fescue. They seem to be made for each other. It would be a great overseed and in summer you won't even notice the fine fescue other than making the Zoysia even more green in appearance.

    • @Plantbasedthrower
      @Plantbasedthrower Рік тому

      I wish I could post a photo for you but zoysia alone is perfect. I’m green from early may until Halloween. Let’s me have more time in spring and fall for beds and leaves etc…

    @alan30189 Рік тому

    You were in Kennesaw! That’s right down the street for me! I’m in Woodstock. I could’ve bought you and the Mrs a beer or two. 🍻
    Bermuda makes an excellent, thick, green lawn in the summer, but I absolutely hate the stuff. There are two primary reasons. First, takes too long to green up in the spring and it goes dormant too early in the fall. We’re just starting the dormancy phase of the grass, but from mid-October to mid-April, the grass looks like crap. It’s either going dormant, dormant, or coming out of dormancy. So, that’s six months out of the year your grass looks like crap. If you’re fortunate enough to have a lawn that gets full sun throughout the day, it might be 4-1/2 to 5 months out of the year that your lawn looks bad. My lawn doesn’t get full sun until 12:00 through around 8:00.
    There is a type of Bermuda that’s a fine blade Bermuda (likely a hybrid), and it greens up earlier in the spring and stays green longer in the fall. The stuff is beautiful, thick, and soft. I’d like to convert my lawn over to it.
    The second reason I hate Bermuda, is it’s highly invasive. I’m constantly having to pull it out of garden beds. The fine blade Bermuda, mentioned above, seems to be less invasive.
    Unfortunately, I’m in a neighborhood with an HOA, and they require Bermuda grass to be grown on all lots, or I would’ve changed over to Kentucky Bluegrass, long ago.
    Zoysia grass does well, up in cool weather areas, like Ohio.

    Allyn, is Kansas just sort of a dead zone in terms of having a good all around grass type? The fescue looks good Spring & Fall, struggles in the summer unless watered to hell, and Bermuda here really only starts looking good in late May/early June and lasts until the first freezing temp in late Sept/early Oct, which sucks when it is a main outfield grass for our ballfields that are played on March through early Nov.

    I just got a new house. Its been a year. The builders put out bermuda sod and it seems (from the year Ive been here) that the grass is greenest and thickest mid July to August. My problem is that I know you are supposed to cut bermuda grass short, but when I do it never looks uniform. Its always green in some spots and brown in others (especially in areas where the mower circle blade marks are prevalent). Seems the only way to keep the green look thick and uniform is cutting it with the 3 setting on my mower. But with that I have to cut it more frequently. Ughh I cant win. Any suggestions?

    Sodded my lawn 6 years ago with Centipede just because that was what was previously there. Due to animals, foot traffic, and clay soil my lawn is very weak and spotty now. In the spots where the Centipede has died off Bermuda has appeared and seems to be taking over. Should I sod/plug/sprig my bare spots with Bermuda since it is more tolerant and push it with nutrients to take over the Centipede? Also the Bermuda that has appeared I don't believe is common I actually think it may have come in with the Centipede sod.

      @senseisnotcommon9711 Рік тому +1

      I'm no LCN or BGC, but I would not sod or overseed burmuda. Plus, hybrid and common doesn't look good together. Burmuda is such an alpha (weed) that it doesn't take much for it to heal.
      I had similar issues with my lawn where large patches of grass died out. 1st, find out why you have dead spots (animal urine, insects, disease, soil conditioning, poor/over watering, etc.) and fix-- if insects ate the roots, you'll just be feeding them with new sod. Plus, it's about the end of the growing season and it's all going to be brown soon. Most of what you're doing now is for the next growing season.
      Once the issue was solved (insects in my back yard, poor soil in front), I nitrogen boosted and added soil amendments. After a couple weeks, the patches were completely filled in.
      I'm going hit mine with 1 more 35-0-4 quick release and then the Yard Mastery stress blend towards end of October as it goes dormant. I'm going to follow up with organics and soil amendments in January to help it through the winter months. I'll cross my fingers and wait for it on the other side.

    I have a 23.5' x 40' rose garden in my yard with picket fencing around it. The plants are badly overgrown (I'm working on that) and there's more weeds than grass in there at this point. I plan on removing the grass, leveling the ground, creating a border around the perimeter inside the garden, and have started working on a large fire pit in the center. I also added two benches.
    After I remove the grass that is in there and level the soil, I would like plant some very nice, soft, beautiful grass on the inside area. I plan on keeping it reel cut because my riding mower doesn't fit through entrances to the garden. I have a sprinkler set up, and it gets plenty of sunshine. I'm living on the Florida Panhandle very close to the Georgia and Alabama state lines. What type of grass would you recommend for this project?
    It won't be for the entire yard, just the inside of the rose garden. I don't mind if a lot of maintenance is required because it is a relatively small space close to the house and my garden shed. I also have been out there for at least 20-30 mins anyhow deadheading roses and reshaping the plants in there that need a lot of pruning because of over a year's worth of neglect before I moved in.
    I've looked into various types of grass, but I'm torn because I don't really know a lot about grass. I'm not sure what qualifies as high foot traffic, but I'd like to be able to sit in there barefoot (after I also get rid of the fire ants 😂) if I want to and have it be a really beautiful space.

    A negative for Bermuda grass is that it LOVES nitrogen. With today's fertilizer prices, you can quickly burn a hole in your pocket.

    Seems Bermuda has turned up and has black on the stem? I’ve never seen this. Stains clothing and sticks to your shoes and skin. Will try killing it off and plant a new grass from seed. Horrible stuff

    I’m surprised (not surprised) that a lawn “expert” did not know that the best cool season grass type for being hard wearing & tolerate foot traffic is ryegrass, why do you think most U.K. /European football pitches use ryegrass?
    Back to the back of the classroom for you again Lad.

      Well Alan , no I’m not drunk (yet) , the reason I pulled you up on that statement is because I have witnessed a few rookie mistakes by you in the past (you normally just ignore me when I pull you up on them or double down & make the same mistakes even more in later videos),
      So would you like to explain why you said “there is no option for grass that can tolerate foot traffic in the north”,
      Did you mean north Florida or North America?
      I have given you a get out of jail free card there if you need it (just pretend you meant north Florida) 😉

      It’s quite funny how you accuse me of being drunk because I dared to question your knowledge & advice,
      That’s a very narcissistic way of thinking!

    I dislike Bermuda grass so much I had to comment. I'm sure it's great on golf courses but looks terrible as a home lawn. It seems nobody takes care of it so the lawn looks like tall fuzzy hair and weeds stick out like a sore thumb. Palisade Zoyzia on the other hand, AMAZING home lawn. Maybe the best but so expensive. Palisade had been my dream lawn but it's cost prohibitive for me.
