Aripiprazole was an awful medication for me. Was not strong enough even on the highest dose to help me when I was in full blown psychosis, but it made me feel terrible as well. I became like a zombie and lost interest in every thing. I would sit and stare at a wall non-stop for 12 hours a day apart from to eat or go to the toilet, because nothing interested me and I couldn’t bring myself to do anything. At the same time, my legs were restless, so if I wasn’t jiggling my legs on the spot, I was pacing for hours every day.

Apparently it dulls down dopamine, one reason why some people stunningly went from never gambling to gambling….( Needed “reward”.). You describe a dopamine blocking effect, though of course it’s far more complicated than that… which is one partly truthful reason the R&D ppl, manufacturers, and doctors will say “don’t know exactly how it works.” This med is prescribed for ANYTHING and everything, but note most of all perhaps it’s use in turning down so-called “aggression” in suffering 6 to 10 year old kids. It’s a variety of “throwing wet spaghetti against the wall.” Not necessarily evil, but wandering round in the dark. Not always (the profession and drug manufacturers) so honest (certainly not transparent or interested in longterm use effects… studied for 6 weeks, not 6 years or 6 decades) … I’ll maybe finish this but I’m writing this at minute 5-7.

Interesting video - i was put on Abilify as my first anti psychotic medicine and it made me into a zombie, it was horrible to be on.. I guess i responded really bad to it then haha!
It took them 2 years of all medicine not working before they gave up, it took 3 years before someone asked if i was correctly diagnosed 😑
Interesting it can be used for depression and aggressive autistic people!
I did get my diagnosis changed to Autism actually - I DID have small psychotic episodes, but i think we agreed that they where major anxiety symptoms compressed by stress and eventually blowing out of proportions..
I have heard from friends who does need anti psychotics that it works really well for them though!
I find medicine very interesting though!

I had a horrific and pretty unusual reaction to aripiprazole for treatment-resistant depression. It made me incredibly drowsy and sedated, but I could not actually fall sleep. I spent whole days and nights laying in bed, constantly about to drop off to sleep, but every time I did, I jerked back awake with that sudden sensation of having fallen. Over and over again. I also had akathisia. It was torture and I could barely function or think. I only managed micro-sleeps and very light sleep for several days before I refused to take it any more.

I was prescribed this medication for bipolar. It was perfect for me mentally, but not physically so I had to change meds. It made really relaxed and chill so it was good for my anxiety, but it made me too chill. It made me overly sleepy all the time. I’d have to practically overdose on caffeine just to have the energy to stay awake on these meds

Interesting. I take it for bipolar, along with lithium, and my body responds positively to it. I feel a boost of energy, almost caffeine-like, from it. Definitely not something that makes me sleepy. These drugs are definitely all over the map in how an individual responds to it and not a one-size-fits-all solution. The one that I hated was lamatrogine. I took that for about a week for bipolar and I was like eff this and my doc switched me to lithium, which is much more subtle for me, so much so that I don't notice it, just that it takes the edge off any manic or hypomanic tendendencies. (I'm also a lower complexity case of bipolar, so not really that extreme even when unmedicated.)

My severe allergic reaction: about 12 years ago I was prescribed Abilify (unfortunately, I don’t recall the dosage) by my Psychiatrist as an adjunct to 300 mg Effexor XR treating chronic MDD with minor anxiety.
After only 2 doses, I was in the ER with severe allergic symptoms - I felt like my throat was closing over. In addition, I had a puffy-swollen face (eyes watering) with red/splotchy & itchy neck and upper chest.
I was given some medication (sorry, I don’t recall what it was… perhaps Epinephrine) and immediately discontinued Abilify and within 24 hours felt fine. The ER Dr. also reviewed what else may have caused the reaction such as ingestion of new/unknown foods, environmental changes, etc.
I have Abilify flagged as an allergy on my pharmacy profile to be safe. Also, it is noted on my GP profile as I no longer have a psychiatrist.
    Edit: typo

Im on abilify. Its very effective against my schizophrenia and I’m happy with it. I love this video. It made me feel even better. I saw a thumbnail of a scary video on UA-cam saying “abilify causes chemical lobotomy” I don’t feel that myself. I only feel it keeps me in check. So I don’t get so emotional that I break down and get psychosis. For example my grandmother is on her death bed and I am very sad that I have to say goodbye to her beacouse she is very close to my heart. But I feel I have the sadness under control which I did not when my other grand mother (on my dad’s side) passed away. Then I broke down completely and ended in psychosis. At that time I had quit the mediciation in secret. I was on another antipsychotic before.
But abilify makes me feel so good, it takes away my depression and I have not got oculogyric crisis with it. I have got that with another. It was very distressing and horrible for me.
I like abilify a lot and what it has done and is doing for me. Bless Arvid Karlsson.

Thank you Dr Syl for this informative video. I have been on Aripiprazole for almost four years now, and my dosage has been decreased (by increments of 5 mg) from 30 mg to 15 mg over a long period of time. I feel a whole lot better, now that my dose has been significantly decreased. You say that weight gain is not a common side effect, but I have experienced a weight gain of over 14 pounds, which has significantly affected my body shape. And yet, when I was on Risperidone for some years, I gained not an ounce. I guess, different strokes for different folks. I also feel considerably less sedated, now that I am on a lower dose. You describe this drug's use for Schizophrenia, but may I respectfully point out that Schizophrenia is somewhat different from Schizoaffective Disorder (which I have been diagnosed with, and treated for). My own psychiatrist highlighted the differences to me, when I described myself as 'Schizophrenic'.

I have diabetes because of it. I was suffering from anxiety. I also do have thyroid issues that happened after this. Before this video I had no idea this could happen. Of course the doctor never mentioned that. My life has been ruined of all these meds since i was 12. This was when I was going through puperty that should have been looked at instead. I am a trans guy and I have not been depressed since hormone treatments. I also had a hysterectomy now it is not possible to ever get my cycle anymore because that screwed things up for me.

Very interesting. Abilify for aggressive autism! Low dose would be the aim, due to these medications cause movement disorders (making life more stressful)
You'd posibly enjoy Josef's channel, (the taper dr.) He's actually been on an antidepressant himself and has uploads on his withdrawal. He's an aussie shrink who used to work for FDA, but perhaps works from canada!
    😊thanks for the upload

@kassi4837 brilliant! He has some amazing advice, due to personal benzo withdrawal experiences.. Syl and Josep are my faves. I work in the disability field and my youngest 2 adult children have Tourette's 26 &28 y.o now...
Four years ago, a doctor overdosed me on maxalon & it gave me tardive dyskinesia & dystonia..
It gave me my children's illness/syndrome.. My gp didn't believe my symptoms at 1st! Awful!
When I first asked the neurologist, Weather TD and dystonia is the same thing as drug induced tourettes syndrome, he said "yes, more or less"
At 1st, I was too afraid to let him know that I had been admisted maxalon during my last 2 of four pregnancies 🤔
That's how I ended up here🤣 Because ME & the medical profession, needs to catch up on side effects aka the possibility of movement disorders from anti-nausea and ssri medications

Im having so much sedation with olanzapine and i heard that abilify is less sedating. Is that true? I gained 50 lbs on olanzapine in 1 yr.. When i was lowering it i lost 80 pounds. A few months ago i stopped all 0f my meds and i ended up in the hospital so im glad you put in there to talk to your dr before making changes. Haldol and thorazine made me have restless legs really bad.

Symptoms were similar to those with Lewy body disease. Similar to low dopamine disorder.
So my question is do we know why individuals with low dopamine have same symptoms as Individuals with psychosis who have high dopamine?
They gave him Abilify as a way to balance his dopamine since they had no clue why he had symptoms of low dopamine while having psychosis.

Should be. I gained nearly 20 lbs on a 2mg dose that was added to my 375mg venlaflaxine dose. My doctor wasn’t willing to let me take Metformin in conjunction with Abilify. This seems to be a common practice in the US but not in Canada where I live. I ended up stopping Abilify after 2 months even though it worked really well, because of the weight gain. I didn’t lose the weight after I stopped, either.

    @PhilosophicalDreamers Місяць тому +1

People get angry it is normal. To medicate a autistic person because they are overestimulated is wrong there are other ways to reduce the sensory overload than dosing them with antipsychotics which can have very unpleasant side effects depending on the amount given. Doctors and CPN's need to work towards having a therapeutic relationship with their patients this means hearing them their needs and being prepared to compromise. Also as far as possible resolve issues.
