In this series, we’re going to take a look at, and analyze byte sized sections of the Sonic universe where Metal Sonic and his many variants have appeared over the years. Metal Sonic is consistently one of, if not the most popular villain in the Sonic series. And there’s a good reason for that! But quite often his potential has been completely wasted in the games he appears in. Or at best, has been very underutilized. So join me for a series that seeks to right those wrongs, and give Metal Sonic the recognition he deserves! He may have a heart of metal, but that hasn't stopped him stealing the hearts of the fans since 1993.

I completely agree. It is very strange that despite being in promotional material and box art for CD, Metal Sonic rarely appears in this game, unless you count the holograms we see throughout CD. He kidnaps Amy, races Sonic, and is never seen again. Also, I do agree that Metal Sonic racing Sonic has been overdone, despite Stardust Speedway being one of my favorite tracks in the series. Metal Sonic has so much potential as a character that is hardly ever explored in the games due to Sonic having to constantly go through rivals, but I am looking forward to my favorite character, besides Sonic himself, getting an in-depth look at all his representations throughout the games and other media. Metallix Brotherhood, Neo, and OVA are my personal takes on the character.

I love Metal Sonic and he’s one of, if not my favourite Sonic character. I think now SEGA just use him as the generic “clone boss” stereotype. I personally think his design is one of the best as the sleekness of his quills (if you could call them that) represents how Robotnik is making his arch nemesis perfect through mechanizing his design and getting rid of his imperfections (how his quills are short, large and messy). Furthermore I really enjoy how we see his AI become corrupt and betray Robotnik over his rivalry with Sonic, like he’s becoming a person in a way. I hope they expand upon this idea in the future as we’ve seen many great stories with rogue robots such as Gamma and Omega.
Indeed! There is such huge potential to go down so many roads with him story wise without him growing stale. It’s a shame, like most other characters, he’s faded into relative obscurity in the last 10+ years.
My favorite Sonic Character, love Sonic CD too
Something i think is really cool is how Metal Sonic started wanting to be Sonic and he even hated being that "Metal" Sonic
But now in the comics and due to him not betraying Eggman anymore in the games and also his theme "Metal Destruction" we can see that now he has pride in being METAL, now he doesn't want to replace Sonic, he wants to surpass him by being his true self
Poor guy doesn’t get to do much of anything anymore in the games. I’ll have to get up to speed on the IDW stories soon. I’d love to get physical copies but they don’t sell them here.
I never really saw Metal as shying away from his robot nature. Even in Heroes where he's proclaiming his victory as the one true Sonic he embraces his nature and builds himself a new body and even declares himself the robot overlord to rule a robot kingdom.
Way I read his character he knows he's the robotic duplicate, but in his mind so long as he can overpower Sonic and win, he's become the "true" Sonic. What you're made of (hehe) doesn't actually matter so long as you win.
@@WolforNuva In the games this is 100% the case. But it seems the comics generally expand on his character much more than the games. Which in one sense is a little jarring, and in another sense, very interesting. I’m not sure if I ever want to see Metal be a Hero, or compassionate in any way. But we also got things like the Brotherhood of Metallix in the Fleetway series. So a lot of good ideas in the extended media.
@@AceCardGaming Ah I see. I've never really read any of the comics, all my experience has been from the games and TV shows, and usually unless someone actually says otherwise it's the game canon I always assume is the topic.
@@WolforNuva As regards canon, I definitely don’t see the comics as sharing a continuity with the games. Except of course where the games adopt ideas from the comics and use them. But I do very much enjoy the comics as their own thing. I just need to brush up on the Archie/IDW comics a bit 😅

Great video. I remember finishing CD back in the day and feeling really confused about how little Metal Sonic appeared in it. I thought I was alone but I'm glad to see I wasn't. Looking forward to the next one.
I guess maybe for Metal to screw up, and led to Eggman's defeat, the boss fight could be you can't actually attack Eggman as you are because lets say he's got an electric shield protecting him but Metal's all hovering about and looking to take shots at Sonic. So Sonic, seeing no way to attack by himself would look to get in front of Eggman, taunting Metal to attack him and in a blind rage, the metal doppelganger would charge the blue hedgehog. However Sonic would have gotten of the way leading to Metal crashing into the electric shield, causing it to overload and allowing a chance to attack
I’d love to see some kind of evolution for metal sonic in the games. But I agree his debut was good but could have been better

Great video as always and already looking forward to the next one in the series! Metal Sonic is such a great character and definitely deserves a full game with him as the main villain. It is a bit mad to think that he was on the cover for CD and yet featured so little, although we did get the awesome Stardust Speedway tune!

Metal Sonic needs to be the main villain of a Sonic game again I liked his rolls in CD and heroes but admittedly they could have been better maybe in one game metal Sonic could team up with Sonic and friends to fight a new villain maybe metal Shadow eggman finally builds a metal version of Shadow and he goes haywire and betrays eggman and now it's up to all of them to stop him I would like to see that
Metal definitely deserves a big role in a game soon. It’s been long enough. And as you mentioned, there are loads of ways to bring him back. As a bad guy or pseudo good guy.

Hard to say which between Metal and S3&K's Mecha is my favourite, but maybe because they take such different approaches.
Metal rocks the sleek high tech design, looking the most like Sonic and the only one really given emphasis on its speed being able to match or even surpass the original.
Macha though just looks awesome and powerful, and honestly has just as much personality shine through in his debut as Metal did, and achieving what no other machine has done since and gone Super (at least superficially, I know some people have argued it's not a true super form, but it's gold, flies around, is invulnerable, and the form's roots are linked to the emeralds, so it's a super form to me). It's a pipe dream to want Mecha to return, they've got Metal as the established robot duplicate and enough other lookalikes, but I'd still love to see his character developed the way Heroes did to Metal.
I love Mecha. He was the only Metal Sonic I had much experience with as a kid as I didn’t own the CD add-on. And as you said, it had its own depth and abilities that really made it stand out from everyone else. Even managing to achieve a basic super form. I agree completely that it’s a tough choice between Mecha and Metal.

Because I would like to see that I would also like to see you talk about the deadly six who are in my opinion some of the most bland Sonic villains who have ever gotten out of the franchise anyways stay safe
@@maximoomega3691 Tails for sure, it’s just a matter of when. deadly Six, I’m not so sure. They definitely wouldn’t be too high up my list right now anyway. Maybe sometime in the future though.

How is this for a battle idea? Racing metal would be a good start. (Nothing like forces or Generations) More like in SA 2 where Sonic is trying to stop a machine or destroy a certain power supply for Egggman's. Machines. Of course there will be obstacles to try and stop you. Then when you succeed, it feels like a Victory, but then you go head to head against metal in a battle close to Sonic and Shadow's first duel. A battle that can open some new opportunities to add to Metal's attack arsenal.
Quite honestly, I find Metal not only fast, but lethal. If given the chance he could be even deadlier than Shadow. Maybe. But once again that's SEGA. Ignoring potential just to blindly satisfy nostalgia.

I love his character in IDW. He was stronger/faster than Sonic and Knuckles combined and remained evil even after Tails repairs him. He only helped Sonic when he was forced to in the Metal Virus arc.

What I like about it the most is that Metal Sonic is a dream of robotic engineer. Too much to explain, I want to make him.
Oh, and of course Stardust Speedway Bad Future US is a phenomenal musical track.

I feel like Sega letting him take a decade long hiatus followed by a 8 year long hiatus didn’t help. Cool and popular regardless.
Doesn’t make sense to have promoted him and had him on the front cover and then utilise him so little.
Hopefully they give him more to do/bigger plot in any future games they may make.

The outro was a depiction of the section you played so didn’t feel it needed to be mentioned. His fate was sealed already. As for the projectors, it’s a byte sized mini series so just wanted to keep it concise. Especially since I said Metal helped Eggman conquer Little Planet across all timelines so that’s kinda what the projectors show.

My fav version of the character,is archie in issue 86 -87,he is FASTER than ARCHIE sonic,has an arm cannon,tries to KILL tails,an amazing disign and character development by saving tails and sonic from the vulcano and returns as shard (the metal sonic from my profile picture) in sonic universe 41 and died again in the hands of metal sonic 3.7. in issue 50 and his relationship with silver,larry and Nicole are great.so i would like you to mention him on one of your vídeos

My favorite depiction of Metal was either in Heroes or in the 1999 movie, if only because he was actually intimidating in both versions.
I flip-flop between the two because, while the fights in the movie were awesome, him saying "There is only one Sonic" before sacrificing himself kinda came out of nowhere. Plus his voice was...meh.
And while the Metal in Heroes has a great background presence and has my favorite voice and design(I still love "All living things kneel before your master"), his boss fights were kinda annoying and underwhelming(especially Metal Madness).
I do wish that his character moves on from just him wanting to be noticed by Eggman/to beat Sonic.
Like, maybe he finally realizes that he is, in fact, the "loathsome copy" and decides to move forward.
His "goal" in life isn't to prove himself to Eggman or to prove to Sonic who the "real" Sonic is.
His "goal" in life is to prove that he is worthy to be his own person, even if he is a... _faker._

He doesn't necessarily have to become a good guy or to stop working for Eggman.
He just needs to be more independent from both of them.
Yeah, I know, robots defying their programming and living their own lives is nothing new, especially to this series. (what are we on, like, the 4th one?)
But I still think that it would be cool to see.
I mean, it's better than nothing.
Besides, if Metal _does_ end up doing his own thing, he could still be a rival without the need to get his characterization bastardized.
It wouldn't out of insecurity or jealousy or existentialism, more just to test himself.
He's honestly a better "Vegeta-light" than either Knuckles or Shadow.
There was one little four page manga short I do remember seeing on twitter, which could lead to something, from an artist called aogirinaru. Thankfully there's a (rough) English translation to it as most of the manga's they put out are in Japanese. It seems Tails had been captured by Eggman, and then fitted with some mind control device to see Metal as THE Sonic, hence why he's fighting by his side.

I think if that was to be done a game, maybe instead of Shadow fighting by Sonic's side, it should be Amy. Largely due to the fact that she has a history with the robot doppelganger, and has more of an emotional attachment to Tails than Shadow does.
Also a bit of a heads up should you wish to venture beyond, and check out the rest of what they have to offer. If you're like me, it can be of a mine field with some pictures having more yaoiish leanings where Sonic and Tails are maybe being... a little too affectionate. So yea, watch out for those XD

I’m a little surprised you never mentioned the holograms you need to destroy in CD as a way to give each zone a good ending. There, you can see Metal bullying some creatures, so it does show he’s about as cruel as Robotnik in that sense. Although, to be fair, I don’t think anyone even tries to get the holograms anymore for the good ending since you can just get the time stones.
I think metal sonic will make an appearance at the end of the sonic 2 movie 🤞🤞

Question, in this mini series are you going to see his character on IDW? I think his best version is in there on my opinion.

Hey ace there is a theory that metal sonic is sonic roboticized from a alternative timeline and so far it seems believable so what do you think comment down below.
I’ve heard this theory too, and it definitely makes a lot of sense. I nearly mentioned it in this video, but since I’m wary of mentioning stuff that is never explicitly said/shown officially I decided to leave it out. I may discuss it in the final episode though!
I never understood the logic of how Metal Sonic wants to replace Sonic as the one "true" Sonic. He's literally designed as a robot copy of the Blue Blur. Also, I believe Jet the Hawk is a better rival than Metal Sonic and Shadow. I don't see Shadow as a rival anymore because of how popular Sonadow is (of course, that's not a bad thing). Unlike Metal Sonic, Jet actually has a personality. Unlike Shadow, Jet being a scumbag makes sense for his character.
The logic is that his AI was programmed with its goals, and as can be the case with machine learning, Metal ended up changing his goals and wanted to replace Sonic. This is even eluded to in Heroes. I also don’t think a fan ship of Sonic and Shadow is enough reason for everyone to consider Shadow no longer a rival to Sonic. But that’s just me. Your ideas about Jet are interesting though.
@@AceCardGaming Regarding Sonic and Shadow, both of them are heroes. In that sense, any type of rivalry is meaningless. Sonic and Shadow can work better as a couple, IMO. Sonic is free-spirited, while Shadow is disciplined. That type of counterbalance between them makes Sonadow feel more realistic. I doubt Sonadow will ever become canon, but I'll always treasure this ship.

Friendly or otherwise. And to my mind, the only reason Shadow was never formally replaced is because Sonic Team stopped using other characters.

If you look at the marketing and a lot for he art work for Sonic CD, it definitely seems like Metal was intended as some form of rival. And in the canon itself, Metal definitely sees Sonic as his rival. It was definitely a very short lived thing though with Knuckles coming the very next year.
