Remember people: A woman doesn't have to be ""strong and independent"" to be a good example. Not saying being a strong woman is bad, but people treat a more typical feminine woman to be a bad example or something. That's not true. Both sides can be a good example in my opinion :)
True...neither word means anything..women can be strong emotionally and in their femininity which usually means they don't have to be alone because someone will fall for them..wanting to be independent sometimes means just space or wanting to prove something alone or liking freedom of sexuality to change your partner monthly or weekly or nightly...but sometimes it just means coding for i am difficult and bad at relations so I am kinds forced to claim to be empowered alone when I want someone to accept me desperately but don't want to be seen as a loser

If there's one thing that's always bugged me, it's that people who try to pitch or re-write Amy's character to be "better" always use the words "Now I made her head-strong and independent! She's better now!" And it's like... Amy's ALWAYS been independent and head-strong. Even if her goal is Sonic's heart, she's the one to take the charge or do what SHE wants. She's the leader of Team ROSE, it's even in the name! There's been plenty of instances where it's been shown that not taking her seriously proves to be a mistake; In Sonic 06, she saves Princess Elise all by herself and doesn't even get caught. In Sonic Free Riders, she asserts herself when confronted by Storm and even makes him lead the way so she can find Sonic again. Then there's the whole story of Sonic Heroes. The problem is that people think girly feminine personalities can't be "strong"; every time I've seen someone try to rewrite Amy they turn her into a tomboy, which there's nothing wrong with tomboy characters but that's not Amy.
Every time I try to think of a strong female character that has feminine personality and isn't just "one of the guys," I think of Ellen Ripley. Thinking on it more, Amy shares a lot of those same traits, and anyone who actually pays attention can see that, so anyone who thinks that feminine personalities and traits can't be strong is objectively wrong.
If anything, Amy being into “girly” things, is more unique than being a tough baddie, nowadays being a tough bad girl seems to be more common, so I don’t get why people think of it as stereotypical for a female character to be like this

Honestly people nowadays are just obsessed with women having masculine traits so a very feminine character like Amy is gonna be bashed. I always adored Amy growing up. She was passionate , empathetic, sassy and romantic. Also it’s funny how people always hate a female character who is straightforward about her feelings .
If the guy isn't a dick there's nothing wrong with a girl being straight forward with their feelings and think about them a lot even if their not with their crush...that's love

Dont think the issue with Amy is how straightforward she is with her feelings, so much as her "romance" with Sonic is often portrayed as onesided with Amy being fairly forceful about it, despite Sonic clearly not having interest most of the time. There might be more things about Amy besides her obsession with Sonic, much like this video addresses...But it is one of the most remebered traits about her because of how prominent it is. Hope that whenever she appears in the movie verse, they tone down the obsession so her other character traits have more moments to shine.
It’s a shame that people tend to see Amy Rose as “Sonic’s Stocker.” There really is a lot more to her character than just her attraction to the Blue Blur.
I think you meant stalker, but I am sick of those peeps too. It's like I look at all of the bad portraits of Shadow, and I say he is just a bully, people will of course call me dumb. But If I say the same about Amy, peeps will say I am right.

I hate how they often portrayed Amy as obnoxious and clingy. That's not what she is, she adores Sonic in terms of viewing him as inspiration and she's very supportive and strives for adventure.
When I was a little girl playing sonic adventure, I was really inspired by Amy. You could be sensitive and tough at the same time, and your ability to empathise with people doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a push over. I think characters like this in my youth always taught me to see the good in others, no matter what it might seem on the surface.
when I was young. I didn't like her because I thought she's just making things worse for sonic from SA1. but that part of her character she can make friends with almost anyone. that grow on me over the years and I don't find her as annoying anymore. also on the fact she's also growing up. just wish all the characters were written right like back in the old days. haters: she's crazy, always make sonic's day worse and a stalker. me: *checks out every game* the hell you all talking about? the only times she ever waste his time is at SA1 and SH. but that's only short moments. she never do that every minute of the day. yes I know the comment is a year old.
I fell in love with the idea of Sonamy after I saw a comic dub of "Who broke it?". There Amy was portrayed as a motherly character, taking the blame for a crime she didn't do and offering to clean it up so everyone can get along again. If this is Amy's personality, then combining her nurturing care with Sonic's undying confidence to do and protect whatever is right creates a perfect couple in my eyes. Not to mention the color combination of blue and pink is always a treat for the eyes.
I don't hate Amy. I just hate how Sega portrays her sometimes. The fact that she was completely obsessed with sonic never made me enjoy her as a character. Thanks to your video, Amy (Along with Sonic, Shadow, Blaze, Tails, Silver and Knuckles) is now one of my favorite characters. :D
Amy is a awesome character and she's sweet and thoughtful and kind and also she can be pretty stubborn but I'll still love her to pieces she's one of my favourite characters besides Shadow and Knuckles.
Agree about the non-enjoyment. But what this video proves is that she's poorly written and developed. If a character needs an essay to be understood, then there's something wrong about it's portrayal. I came across this video because someone compared Amy and Rivet (because they both have a hammer)and I said that Amy pales in comparison, and this video convinced me even more. Rivet has a real backstory, her personality is clear, and all of her personality traits are beutifully showcased in one single game! Amy needs to get an overhaul, maybe a change of look and a game should have her be in the center of the story with something else than saving the cute little animal (which is another girly stereotype), and being given depth. As much as I dislike Sonic Boom, this is her best portrayal, both in looks and personality.
See, I always liked Amy, and I don’t think she ever had a personality deficit. She’s cute and stylish, outspoken, fearless and spunky, and she uses the best weapon. My roommate once said “Of course you like Amy. She’s you as a hedgehog.”
My take on Amy is your take on Amy. I am grateful you’ve made this video. Much of what I’ve said and what I’ve felt over the years is in this video. Hearing it from someone else really helps because of how lonesome it can be as an Amy fan, especially in the past. That and this video is all around phenomenal, amazing work. This deserves attention for being so educational and informal on the subject that is the character of Amy Rose.

Never thought of Amy as a stereotype because she likes shopping, baking and wears skirt or dress. She's supposed to represent the average girl. While not all girls like those things enough do that having those traits makes sense. Its refreshing to see a female character that enjoys doing girly things and will jump into action for the ones she cares about. A girl doesn't have too look tough, act tough or be a tomboy to be proactive or do the right thing. Another way Sega could expand her character if they changed her outfit every so often in non spinoffs. Amy would be the type of person would not have the same look all the time and be aware of the current fashion.

Yeah, and I always thought that part of her design change from her 8 year old style and her 12 year old one, was because she was growing up and trying to be more ladylike in an attempt to brush off her childish rascal personality and become more adult and well groomed to try to win Sonic over. So it would totally make sense for her to keep adapting her look.
She really isn't. Anyone who thinks she's a bad influence for girls is dumb. Every little girl has their fangirl celebrity crush and that's what Sonic is for Amy. But other than that, she's compassionate and caring about others. She reunited a Flicky with its family. And helped convince Shadow to help Sonic save the world. Her Personality was at its peak in SA 1 and SA 2 but I do like Sonic Boom Amy too where she's less of a fangirl over Sonic
I think all the Sonic girls were actually pretty good influences. Again they all have their failings in writing being kinda, sidelined as the accessory in someone else's story, but when they got their own moments to shine they're all very strong, self reliant and compelling characters and great role models. Even Rouge is actually a really strong female protagonist and she was really overly sexualized

For me, Amy is a part of the group. You can’t just take her away. Whether it’s as a friend or a romantic interest, she’s a part of the core series and the fact she’s still around is because the fans do love her as a character.

I would imagine the original negative comments were probably from boys. I haven’t seen Sonic, but this character sounds so similar to Sakura from Naruto and fans hated Sakura for a lot of the same reasons for a long time, and they were mainly boys hating on Sakura. Which makes sense. Naruto was aimed at boys. And boys probably can’t understand or relate to a girl with a huge crush. They just can’t quite know what it’s like being an immature girl with a crush. Girls act stupid too and see hearts sometimes. 😆 I can only imagine boys watching were only focusing on how nonsensical the girl was being, but that’s just the point. When you’re head over heels as an immature girl you’re not necessarily being logical. Anyways, both this character Amy and Sakura are good characters. Maybe they need to show them away from their crush more or eventually getting more logical as they get over their starstruck phase. But other than that they’re fine.
@@narnia1233 I love Amy as a character, like I do find the over use of the Amy chasing Sonic trope in games weird, but that is Sega not Amy and she has more than enough other qualities to maker he likeable. I find most of the Sonic Heroes version of the characters weird, in fact Amy is probably one of the least weird characters in that game to me, and when written correctly is a phenomenal character, people just write her as a weird stalker sometimes and it overwrites what people see when she can level a high security prison to save someone, not cos she stalks him, but because they are goddamn friends. Buuuuuut I don't really agree with the Sakura point, while she isn't useless, like she is a very capable ninja, her character doesn't actually do that much at the very start. She has a crush on Sasuke which I have no problem with, but time after time she does beat Naruto up. Like genuinely land some punches which send him flying and it may be a gag or friendly, I find it kinda weird she let alone anyone would get angry enough to punch him or anyone down a street even if it is for love. However she grow and develop, she gets training, realises she may not be the best fighter but does have skills in healing jutsu etc, she recognises her shortcomings though she may not work on them at that moment. She goes to the Hokage for that. She genuinely shows a lot of good development, there are just other characters that grow and develop more, like Hinata or are more interesting than Sakura is. Like to me I find Konan, the Akatsuki member a lot more interesting. She is by no means a useless or terrible character, but I wouldn't say Sakura is a good character, she is just decent enough for me to enjoy her interactions with other characters and place in the story. Amy is a character I sometimes love to see on screen depending on her version in the story. I honestly don't really dislike any character, I just have them at varying degrees of, this person is sorta okay, they are okay, this person is pretty decent, this person is good, this person is amazing, and I simp for this person (I will never release this list though I can say there is 0 sonic characters, I have a feeling someone will take this the wrong way and go... "simp for characters, but its sonic? your weeeeeeeeeird" that is not for me, I will never.)

Listen, you can make plenty of understandable criticisms for Amy, but it is flat out impossible for one of them to be "she has no personality". If anything, having _too much_ personality seems to be a prominent criticism!
Yeah she was so sassy in sonic x. Maybe she could be a bit bratty at times but I liked her. I thought she was funny and imo her flaws make her interesting. The only episode I think she went too far was the planet of misfortune episode with the love ritual. I don’t like how they wrote her in that episode but I can forgive Amy for 3 reasons. 1) sonic clearly already loved her back in that show (he even still cared about her after that episode in the metarex climax). 2) She has saved Sonics life multiple times as well and in the climax she was willing to almost die to go after sonic in that water planet thing. 3) Sega has been trying to course correct her character (IDW comics being a great example) so I like to think she learned her lesson at the end of that episode. So yeah Amy in that show was a bit of a grey character but I still love her.
Amy's determination is what makes her an ideal friend (or more, if you're into the ship) for Sonic. Amy doesn't demand that he slows down for her, instead she's determined to follow Sonic wherever he goes, working hard so she can keep up. It's how Amy went from being a nuisance to Sonic to one of his closest friends. She respects and loves him for who he is and doesn't try to change him, and I think Sonic appreciates that.
That line in IDW about how she doesn’t want to change sonic said it all for me. I think she has grown into an awesome character who deserves more love.
I've loved Amy since I was a toddler. When I met other kids who loved the sonic series, I almost felt like I wasn't ALLOWED to talk about her. Everyone seemed to hate her and think she was just annoying. Also I love your note on how she was shilled to be annoying by the other characters. I hope Sonic Team and the public give her the respect she deserves. 💖
I’m really hoping they put her in the sonic movies. I think if they wrote her like adventures mixed with heroes and idw comics she would be awesome. Basically emphasize her good traits and don’t over emphasize her love for sonic. No “will you marry me”. I’ll be angry if she’s excluded. Amy deserves another chance.

"Doesn't need a male character" is such a stupid way of calling someone a strong, female character. Admitting your flaws and relying on other people regardless of their gender is true strength. It's stronger than forcing yourself to believe that the only way you're independent is by shouldering everything by yourself in your life. You're not a "weak" female character if you rely on a man to help you out when you can't get farther. If anything, you're pretty damn strong if you own up to your own weaknesses. People who genuinely believe that strength is defined by how little you need to depend on others have completely forgotten that they live in a society. You rely on other people, men as well, on a daily basis without registering it. The clothes you wear, the food you eat, even the more 'nasty' things like who even helped you get born to begin with. Dependence on other people is how we function as human beings. There are things we *all* can do, and there are things we just can't, physically or mentally. "Doesn't need no man!" is such a stupid fucking way of trying to empower yourself all while essentially doing nothing to empower yourself. Strength is owning up to your faults and reaching out to people who can combine with you to make you perfect. When a baker and an engineer come together, they create bread in an oven. When each of them individually works, one has an oven without bread and one had raw-ass bread.

"Doesn't need a boyfriend/husband" is a very good way of calling someone a strong female character. Of course that's not what you intended with your analogy, but a single woman shouldn't be compared to raw-ass bread, and a lesbian couple shouldn't be compared to two pieces of raw-ass bread. There's nothing specific to men and nothing specific to women, they don't complete each other, but we all need other people regardless of gender.
As a fellow Amy/ sonamy fan, this video was an insightful reminder of all the things I love about Amy Rose, and a fair critique on her exclusion in the game’s narrative. I never realized out of all the main cast, Amy never had a game focused on her growth or her character, she’s been the cheerleader and pep talk friend as always. While she’s more than happy to cheer on those she loves, her fiery spirit will ALWAYS keep her off the sidelines. I do wish you could have further detailed Amy’s ability to compromise and explain to what extent she loves sonic, since the idw comics explains how she respects Sonic’s boundaries while also reaffirming that she loves him for who he is, eliminating the idea that her love is vapid or she’s a “fan-girl”. though, I can see why you left it out since it’s a spin off/ alternate universe branching from the last game in the series, it’s not canon to the main storyline. After the positive reception of boom!amy and idw!amy, Sega’s definitely taking notice of her fanbase and recognizing her importance. we’ve had a sonic mania special about her, plots in the idw series where she takes charge and advances the plot, and most notably, used in clothing lines for puma and hot topic (the latter which portrayed her and sonic as each other’s love interest. which is a HUGE development in of itself). Knock on wood, but I’d say the future is looking bright for our Rose :D
QUICK SIDE THOT it’s always rubbed me the wrong way when the fandom praised Amy for her toned down affections for Sonic in Boom. One of the things I loved about her was her lack of fear in rejection and her complete openness about how she feels towards others. Growing up I’ve always seen that as empowering, especially since I grew in an environment that taught me that girls should quiet their emotions and be more docile. I might be in the minority in saying so, but her open affection towards Sonic is a very important part of who she is. She loves him, she’s confident, persevering, of course she’s going to display her love. it makes sense, it’s an extension of her bold and optimistic nature! Hiding or toning down her feelings towards Sonic seems a bit out of character, it suggests she’s not fully confident or fears rejection on some level. I prefer the modern depiction of Amy openly showing her love for Sonic while also knowing when it’s the appropriate time to do so.

I love that she's bold about how she feels, it adds into her confidence and how much she believes in herself (and it does come off better when Sonic's more receptive to it as well). Her being scared to tell Sonic how she feels makes her seem a little insecure in a way the other Amys weren't. @@taromarshmallow7814 I totally agree with you and Potatoes_Tomatoes on how Amy's openness about her love for Sonic is an example of her boldness, confidence and optimism, it's never healthy to hide one's feeling for anyone, romantic or not, and yes her love for Sonic is an important part of her character but people tend to think that's all there is to her when there's not as you've explained in this video, I pray that Sega will bring back this side of her character and yes, give her and Sonic's other friends the attention they deserve and used to have back in the early 2000s

Seriously, it kinda ticks me off how people say they like specific versions of Amy, like Boom Amy or IDW Amy, cuz I've ALWAYS liked Amy from when I got obsessed with Sonic X. I always saw her as confident, strong female character who never lets anyone get in her way! Always chasing Sonic, admiring him, waiting for her moment with him, but also doing anything to protect herself and her friends, as not EVERYTHING she does is about or for Sonic, since she loves shopping, cooking, hanging out with Cream, Big, or Tails. Saying Amy loving Sonic is her only personality trait, is like saying Tails admiring and following Sonic is his only personality trait, and nobody would say that's true for him, so why Amy? :/ I will always love all parts and versions of Amy, and will always ship Sonamy no matter what anyone says because after everything Amy's done and grown for Sonic, and how Sonic shows he truly cares for her numerous times (she's not just a fangirl, she's a genuine caring friend) I feel like they deserve each other, they're quite adorable together and care about each other so much! She's always so open about her love because Sonic almost never gives her a chance to show it more properly; she deserves that chance, and deserves to be there, to show she's important and useful and not a nuisance or just an "annoying fangirl" at all! That being said, I love you all and most of this comment section I am so grateful I'm not the only way who feels this way about Amy Rose 🙏
A thing you'll really notice between where Amy is harshly critiqued and where she's considered good is how the characters treat her. In cases where people consider her a nuisance, the other characters treat her the same way. But in cases where she's treated as she is, the characters are also doing that. I believe a big part of why Amy's good traits go unnoticed is because of the other characters' views on her. I think this is video is great because it highlights those good traits, and looks past what the other characters see through a very objective perspective. Amazing job!
I don’t like how they presented her in generations and how sonic was shoving his hand in her face. And then he showed an attitude after saving her because she made a joke about flirting with him. I think that’s a prime example of what your talking about. There is evidence that Amy is and always was one of Sonics best friends but unfortunately they didn’t portray her as such which lead to people thinking Amy was “harassing sonic” and when really I don’t think that’s the dynamic sega was going for.

I always thought Amy was the typical annoying love interest and didn't care about her. But then I played sonic adventure and I was shocked, she's super cool, straight up one of the better stories just because she's really fun to see in cutscenes, a standout in a game with not great dialogue. Having played more of the games, Amy is one of my favourite characters without a doubt
Yeah same here. I personally loved her in sonic x. That show changed my mind about her. Before that I only really remembered her sonic rush appearance. She had a lot of really sweet moments in that show that made me really like her like when she made sonic that seashell necklace.
I feel like another reason people tend to go as fair as to call Amy a stalker is because of how the west tends to portray Sonic’s feelings for the Pink Hedgehog. In the Japanese dub Sonic tends to get shy whenever Amy is coming on strong or being overly affectionate. Sega even confirming multiple times that Sonic likes Amy just as much as she likes him romance wise. But for some reason instead of sticking to this the people here in the west tend to have Sonic be down right annoyed with Amy to the point that sometimes you wonder why he’s even friends with her. (Depending on the game of course) That seems to be a non issue now as it seems the west is now starting to embrace the fact that Sonic does indeed care for the girl and have romantic feelings for her. Even going as far as to hint at it and call him out for it during things like the Sonic twitter taker overs which Are canon.
Fr, like in Japan they really are like a Mickey and Minnie combo and are treated as such, but in the west they portrayed as a joke and change Sonics reactions and character towards Amy and her affections, thus this also affects how the fans in the West see her and why the hate too, calling her ,wrongfully, a fangirl,obssessed and a stalker
I feel like Amy is a good strong female character who can be annoying at time but at the same time that's not saying much when most to all of the sonic characters annoying in their own ways.
Friendly reminder she's 12 so her being annoying just adds to her charm because it reminds us how their are in fact kids who act more "mature" will have their moments that reminds us that they are children just like amy.

@@fbichan9418 That’s another good point. I think the natural character arc for Amy should be as she gets older she becomes more restrained and mature around sonic. I really like how they wrote her in IDW comics even if they kind of ripped off freedom fighters. In the later comics though she steps down from being the leader and does her own thing with her friends so I don’t think it’s fair how people say she’s ripping off Sally acorn. I have hope sonic prime is going to do her character justice.

I. LOVE. THIS. VIDEO, it's charming to see other fans defend Amy from such exaggerated critisisms, she has also been my favorite for many years but it was not until recently that I decided to express it and search much more about her character, I'm glad I did. I gotta say, the last part left me a bit sad, why is she the only character that never had a story focused around her? Why is she the only character left out when Sega has the opportunity? It also makes no sense that the same fandom that asks for her character to be better, backs off when someone proposes a story revolving around her or proposes a bigger role for her. That's not to say all fans are the same but my experience with the Sonic community has not always been a positive one, in fact, it was more negative than positive. Anyway, personal tantrums aside, this video is amazing and it definitely needs more views. And when it comes to Amy, I cross my fingers that the next game gives her the spotlight she deserves.
Thanks for watching! I think another reason she gets pushed to the side so much is that the franchise has always seemed like it was focusing on an audience of young boys (even though there are fans of all ages and genders), so SEGA probably assumes Amy won't appeal to them.
SEGA has ruined its characters just to make sonic look great. Now the other characters don't have any character development and they are just side characters. Shadow is just a rival, Knuckles is stupid, Tails is intelligent guy and Amy is a girlfriend. These are the only character traits which these characters have now.
I understand the reason for not adding her in modern sonic games but why didn't they add her in Sonic Mania? I was so disappointed by this as she is my 3rd favourite sonic character

@@dragondelsur5156 sega has received some complaints on sonic's friends being playable. Now it is only sonic or someone like him who are playable now. If anything, fans are responsible for the limited characters. Some fans can be helpful too with art and fangames, but there are other fans who put a strain on sonic with their complaints. one of my favorite amy moments you didnt mention was in sonic adventure 2, when she rescues sonic from jail on prison island. when tails first spotted her on the island, he was like "how did u get here?? its dangerous here!" clearly underestimating her. not only did she get to prison island, a fiercely defended remote military base BY HERSELF, but SHE found and collected the keycard to open sonic's cell. she plays the rescue moment up for laughs like "haha im gonna hold this card ransom to make u marry me" but when sonic says no to the bargain, she respects his lack of consent and frees him anyway, implying she was just joking around. that whole cut scene, i was like "damn this woman got some tricks up her sleeve"

In adventure she was relying on sonic to go on adventures and fight crime but in sonic heroes she does it herself and leads a team! It was great development but people downplay it for a stupid fight which all the characters had but only she gets punished for it.

As I watch this video, it opens my eyes to Amy's character even more. As a young girl, I didn't really think much of Amy and found her annoying. But as I grew older and a bit wiser, I slowly realize there's more to her character than just being a Sonic fangirl. So thanks for making this video

Honestly I'd love to see games that revolve around each of the girls. Though, knowing how certain parts of the fanbase can be, I highly doubt we'd ever see it come to fruition. I'd play the hell out of an Amy game.
I'm glad I actually watched this. Amy is a great character with a awesome personality but is always screwed by the writers at times. She has a potential that can rival sonic.
Screwed by bad writing but really screwed by mistranslation. 4kids especially butchered Amy’s dialogue in sonic x and made her seem worse than she is. Not that I dislike her in the English dub but her dialogue in the Japanese version is far better and shows a lot more nuance to her character.
You deserve waaaaaaay more views and subs, this essay was incredible. I adore Amy and the criticism she gets has honestly never really made sense to me.
As a fellow Amy fan myself, I just want to say thank you! I can't tell you how infuriating it is to have people clown on her when she's arguably the most influential character in the series. Because of her, pivotal moments in the plot occur and without those moments, such as with shadow and silver to name a few, the stories wouldn't have been the same. She's a great role model and I hate that people couldn't see the traits that she had prior to boom, the sonic mania short, and the idw comics. All traits shown in those iterations was already established in her character years before. Again, this video was great! Even though I'm a guy, Amy has shown me valuable traits and lessons that extend beyond sex and/or gender.
Yeah I think hopefully Amy will see better days and will be appreciated more going forward. I’m so excited to see how they write her in this new sonic prime show coming out next year. Ill say I personally thought she was adorable in sonic x. That seashell necklace episode was so wholesome.

@@chaoscontrolreturns Well I heard Ian Flynn (the guy who wrote idw) is involved with prime and I absolutely love how he wrote Amy in IDW comics. I love that IDW acknowledges how Amy used to be and that she grew up some instead of her just being an alternate version of the character like in boom.

I can't tell you how many times I've argued with people about why Amy is more than just a crazed Sonic fanatic. She's literally like my favorite character right next to Metal and it sucks that nobody gives her any recognition. It also doesn't help that Sega has sort of demolished most of the previous characters archetypes
Amy the Hedgehog was basically the Ahsoka Tano(Star Wars) of Sonic the Hedgehog series. She was hated by the fans before but now, some fans realized that Amy was actually a great character. One of them is me and being a big fan of her and Sonic ship, I would love to see her in Live-Action appearance in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie along with Shadow the Hedgehog.
Funny how, just as you said, most of the Amy slander could've been avoided if she played a more pivotal role in her debut game. Here's hoping for a future game with Amy as the focus, so people can finally shut up about her having no purpose in the series.

I think people see high femme characters and assume they aren't strong or independent. Amy Rose radiates agency and that's the most important thing a character can have to be interesting to me. A huge role model for me growing up and today

Honestly Amy is a very rounded and developed character, I think the main reason people find her "annoying" or "too stereotypically feminine" is because she's girly. Let strong female characters be girly and feminine!
I never saw Amy as an irritated character, she's always been my favorite. Games and series. I mostly got irritated how the other characters treated her, especially Sonic. I feel like Amy deserves better, but I do hope greatly that someday Sonic and Amy will be an actual Couple.

Ever since playing as Amy Rose in Sonic Advance, I liked her unique moveset (hammer and cartwheel). Even just that game's sprite actions and idle animations alone gave little glimpses into her character and personality overall.
My Mom is really kind and sweet. I told her that Amy Rose reminded me of her, but she didn’t know who Amy Rose was, so I showed her this video to explain myself. She really liked it, and it ended up being a bonding experience for us. :)
Even if people hate the idea of Amy fawning over Sonic all the time, dont forget that she likes THE Sonic. He's a confident badass that has worked to save the world countless times, for often little to no benefit to himself. Why wouldn't she be into him if she had the opportunity to interact with him on a regular basis?
Love this video! Amy has always been a favorite of mine growing up. I've always found her criticisms to be exaggerated and poor. So glad to see people make great content supporting her as a character. Also what you mention about Amy's lack of importance is so true. I was so hurt when Sonic Mania didn't make Amy playable, she already has an established 2d style from the advance series. It's a shame because it seems initially Sega wanted to give her a big part, what with larger role in adventure, her inclusion in advance and Sonic Shuffle, and her redesign. But of course, Sega listened to the complaints and has pushed her to the side a bit. She's there but never important, which sucks.
Amy's my favorite character too, so much so that my nickname and the first name of my UA-cam profile is Amy. I love her ability to make friends and empathize with others, traits that I want to improve upon. Also I was never annoyed with her love for Sonic. I found it adorable and sometimes inspiring. While she can go overboard at times, she never gives up on Sonic, she saves him on numerous occasions, and their interactions in Sonic X prove how strong their relationship is and how SonicXAmy is more than just a possibility. Maybe its just me but I noticed people are more critical of female characters than male characters. It's not that they don't want female representation, but they only want "certain" female characters and criticize those who they think are useless, weak, bitchy, etc. like Amy or even Sakura from Naruto. She has flaws, sure, but she went from a normal girl who overly relied on her intelligence and lacked physical strength, who looked down on Naruto for being an orphan, and had low self esteem to learning to empathize with Naruto and even saving his life in the War Arc, being one of the best medical ninjas who surpassed her teacher by setting up mental health clinics around the Five Great Nations, and saving the world alongside Naruto and Sasuke. Despite this, people ignore all that and focus on the worst aspects of her character or what she should have been while not treating Naruto and Sasuke the same way. It's like people don't understand that female characters don't have to be perfect and like male characters they can change and grow.

As someone who only watched bits and pieces of the original series and was never really into the games at all and fell in love with her through fanart and comics. I loved her kind, strong, and topically feminine personality. Even as a younger girl with a very tomboy personality and style. Then as I grew older I saw the way she was viewed and felt ashamed for likening her. When I had been such a huge fan I filled multiple sketchbooks with fan art of her. This video made me feel so much better about my view of her and made me an even stronger supporter of hers.

As a kid I thought she was amazing! She was strong to hold up on her own and didn't take crap from anybody! She knew how to stand her ground and that was one of the many things I learned from her. She wants to help sonic and I love that!

As much as I love the whole entire strong and independent women trope I also enjoy a damsel in distress too. People seem too think that a female character has to be strong to be likable but people forget that women are weak too. And amy is strong in her own way. That's one thing Sonic likes about her.
i agree, soft characters, whatever gender they may be, can be just as likeable as strong characters. strength also doesn’t have to be physical, they can have a strong will but still be in distress, which can make a very interesting character!
Tails & Amy are my favorite characters because of their great character development . Tails started as a kid that can't defend himself and became a hero of his own. And Amy literally transitioned from a damsel in distress to a damsel of war . Even Sega has forgotten what makes sonic characters great . IMO the comics has handled the characterization of Amy the best . Fleetway, Archie, IDW, all 3 comic series has a different but amazing characterization of Amy that makes her a really good character

I'm honestly so happy that this video exists, Amy is a huge favorite character of mine and it sucks how much the fandom doesn't really recognize how much character potential and just how great a character she is overall. My main gripe with boom Amy is she’s disconnected from the main canon and she’s really a different character with a different backstory. I would like her more if they implied it was Amy years later as she got older and matured. This is why I like IDW comics Amy more because they do that. I don’t want them to erase her fangirl past is what I’m trying to say. I want there to be transition.
Ngl prior to when I originally watched this video I hadn't disliked Amy but I never really thought about her character much. Now, roughly a year or two after I originally watched it, I've grown to enjoy her as a character so much that she's my favourite character [that isn't a villain] in the series. It's nice to be able to say that there's an animated short that now features _both_ of my favourite characters from the series as well. [That being the winter short with Amy and Metal Sonic :>] With her positivity in particular I find myself relating to her quite heavily, which leads to me being kinda sad about her depiction in Boom specifically since that's just an entirely different character all together. In other words, thank you! This video changed my view on the series as a whole in what I see as a net positive way. Super excited about playable Amy in the Frontiers update and now I am curious what your thoughts are on her depiction in that game.
I still don't understand "Sonic had too many friends." Particularly when you consider how much overlap the fandom has with _Friendship is Magic,_ a universe where the answer to the question, "How many friends so you really need?", is always, without fail, "At least one more." That said, I wouldn't mind some spinoffs: Give Shadow his own games where he works behind the scenes (agent of G.U.N. and all that) to take down crime rings and Chaos cults. Give him actual stories and his own plot lines, instead of just making him Sonic for edgy teens
I like how it seems like they’re also saying that no matter who you are, you can also be like sonic. Amy’s character design is also super nice and she’s pretty. It’s interesting to see her character develop and change over the years.
People should know that every characters will have bad side of them even the main one. Sonic is just ego head and jerk. He just thinking that what he did is right all over time just because he is hero.

I love how changing the perspective in this video (focusing on Amy and not Sonic for once) really clarifies Amy's character. I think a lot of us guys never gave her much thought because we only ever put ourselves in Sonic's shoes, and the way we thought of her as a distraction from whats "important" (taking down Eggman) kind of carried on throughout her appearances. Its hard to overwrite first impressions, especially those made at such a young age (as I'm assuming most of us played Sonic first at a much younger age, lol). I do want to say that even though her character never changes over the course of her appearances, her mannerisms do, which can mostly be chalked up to character acting. ....um, I don't think that's the right term, but what I'm referring to is the ways in which the artists and animators portray her characteristics and how she holds herself. In earlier iterations she has a very rascally (duh) and almost air-headed mannerism, where her later appearances give her a more level headed and almost adult presence. This seems to be a move to avoid the very juvenile "girls are crazy" feeling fans have had towards her, which unfortunately betrays her character as you've highlighted here! Personally, I had never liked all the Sonic clones. In a world where the characters can be whatever you want, why make more hedgehogs? So for me, from the beginning a pink sonic that also drools over Sonic felt like an awfully cheap character to conjure up, and I wrote her off. When I discovered the Archie comics I was even less incentivized to care for her when the role of the "female lead" so to speak was filled up by Sally- a seemingly more fleshed out and respectable character from the beginning, and Amy became even more of a needless character. But now that I'm older and past the childish notions of seeing the world solely through the main character's eyes, I'm glad I can renew my view of Amy with your insight! I realised that amy is pretty similar to aerith from final fantasy 7. theyre both compassionate, feminine and gentle, but headstrong, cheeky and independent too. aerith exasperates cloud, like amy does to sonic, but its clear with both pairs they are very good friends and there is no malice. i guess thats why i love both of them so much :)
I love Amy. She is my favourite character. She’s cute, funny, a little crazy but she’s kindhearted and passionate and loyal and always sticks up for what is right. She loves Sonic because she is her biggest role model, she wants to be like him, and I’d argue she’s a good role model, as she isn’t afraid to stick up for herself and for her friends. I have always loved her, and she is such a great character
I don't think I heard any details on how Amy Rose is "described" when she meets "Gamma" on Sonic X, and how her she was emotionally hurt when she watched him die by his own brother, "Beta". Who also died by Gamma's blaster, both of which died killing themselves, before they release their flickies.
straight up, i love amy so much it's almost painful 😭 and all the time, people get surprised and confused when i tell them she's my favorite sonic character!! but despite some terrible flanderization (something EVERY sonic character has fallen victim to), how could i not love amy? she's passionate, loving, and fearless. like you said, she loves adventure just as much as she loves sonic, and has the strength to get through any battle. and it was *amy's* compassion that finally let shadow realize his actual promise to maria. she's incredible... and it's thanks to writers like ian flynn that the rest of the cast recognizes this as well. seriously, when i started reading idw and sonic invited amy to join him in her introduction comic, i nearly cried. it felt so good seeing sonic actively enjoy being around amy, recognize her skills as being on par with his, and wanting her to be alongside her!? not just a win for sonamy, HUGE win for amy period. this never would've happened in sa1 or riders, and i'm so happy her character has come this far. i have high hopes for what ian does with her in frontiers!

The fandom "Hates" Amy, started in Sonic adventure, went to Heroes and goes until today, (Except Forces and TSR, she's better there) I love Amy, she's one of my favorite characters, but I have to agree with others when talking about "flanderization" *Flanderization is a way to explain a character Who is / was full of personality but ended up becoming a parody of himself, Amy, for example, in the adventures she was a happy cheerful girl that just wanted to make people happy and help them, and of course she loves Sonic but, she'll do what she have to before going after her love, also she's a independent and strong woman who can fight for herself or even to protect others, that went from adventure to adventure 2, but in Heroes, she was "Downgraded" for only being a fanatic Sonic Fangirl, she loves him and only want him, nothing more, i find this kinda cute and Very "Amy Rose" but there's some psycho times: Sonic! This time there's no way outta marry me, Forcing Sonic to marry her? Love your video very, very much. Since I was twelve years old I have been a fan of Sonic and I am currently 21 years old so I have time in the fandom. As someone who admired Amy from the beginning I always saw the qualities of the hedgehog that you marked in the video, but there are people in the fandom (especially the American fandom) who seem not to love Amy very much, which always seemed strange to me. In Japan they adore Amy Rose, in Europe she is also held in high esteem, even in Latin America (my region) she is a much loved character in general, so I assumed that part of the hatred for Amy came from Archie comics. Amy always had an unjustified treatment but I always felt that it was worse in those comics, her personality was exaggerated to the point that they really made her look like a stalker, literally in some comics they justified her sudden growth with the excuse that "she wanted to get closer to Sonic in age "and I think that the general vision of several of seeing Amy as a stalker is due to the Archie comics, so I will not lie, I'm glad they decided to switch to IDW, they really need to let the Freedom Fighters rest for a while once and for all xd I remember making a post at the age of 17 in the Sonic in Spanish Amino community, talking about how special Amy Rose was to me as a character and because from my point of view she had been created as the sentimental mirror of the franchise, How Amy became a character made to show feelings in more human ways, for example when Sonic dies in 2006 Amy is the only one who cries for him, even with Tails next to him being Sonic a brother to him, he does not show so openly her emotions contrary to Amy. Also talk about her growth as her character and her love for Sonic in the franchise. The post had a lot of support, more than five hundred likes, but I also received a lot of negative comments saying that I was overvaluing Amy, that mine was just exaggerated fanaticism, that she was just a stalker, that Sally was the one who deserved to be in the games and not Amy, I had to delete certain comments for fear that they would start fanwars. Although I still think the same thing that I published in that post, I no longer wanted to express my fanaticism for the hedgehog so openly. I'm glad to know that there are still people who defend it and your video has a lot of quality, it really deserves more views. Amy's character has been changing a lot in recent years for the better, in fact I think she is one of the characters that has evolved the most after Shadow. I hope that soon she will give him the relevance that she deserves in games
Thanks for watching! I know what you mean about people criticizing you for admiring Amy, it's one of the main reasons I wanted to make this video. There are a lot of people in the fandom that overlook her good qualities and put a microscope to her bad ones, even more than a lot of the other characters. Something I find unique with those who despise her character most is that they attribute all of their negative perceptions of her onto her fans as well. Amy is "crazy, obsessive and immature," so her fans are "crazy, obsessive and immature," too. I'm sorry you got so much criticism just for expressing your love for a character. If you were overvaluing Amy for talking about why you like her, then literally every Sonic fan is overvaluing the entire franchise. I didn't read much of Archie, but I did see some of what you're talking about with the pre-reboot series. It's part of the reason I never really got into it.

Part of the problem for US fans was also the popularity of Princess Sally from SatAM and the Archie Comics. Then the comics tried to kill Sally off and it just made things worse. I know I was deeply disgruntled with the way they handled that story... A lot of people were, which is why they brought Sally back. But once they finally started including Amy Rose (plausibly a flanderized version too, depending on the writer) and a few other potential girlfriends to replace Sally, it didn't matter how good the characters were or that Amy Rose was from the games; I was irked and refused to give any of them a chance. I wouldn't have cared as much if Sonic and Sally broke up then remained compelling in their own storylines but there was a clear drive over time to shove Sally into the background in the same way that Amy had been. And Sally was a protagonist who got a lot of focus originally, which is why people loved her so much. Poor Amy was underutilized before and as you noted, this held a lot of fans back from appreciating her, me among them. I never saw Sonic X but it's also a shame that the US version of the anime decided to reduce Amy's individual significance. I'm glad she finally got some justice in Sonic Boom! I hope that trend continues and one day Amy gets her own spin-off. :)

He was eventually made host of Muppets Tonight, which further developed him as a unique, human muppet who took his job seriously, had fun in his own way, and felt heartbroken when he thought he wasn’t needed anymore. Sadly, many fans complained about his character change and his appearance to the point where he was forced back into the sidelines until he was forgotten and never used in any recent shows or movies. It was a fate he never deserved because he was the most developed character I’ve ever seen in any muppet. I love Clifford and Amy and would love for them to make comebacks in each of their franchises!

While there is no explanation of where the Piko Piko hammer came from in games, there was an explanation made by Archie comics in their Sonic comic series. I think they just let this explanation explain everything maybe? In the comic Amy had gotten hold of the Ring of Acorns and made a wish to be older so she could be with Sonic. As a by-product of using the Ring she was given the Piko Piko hammer and also given limited wish granting ability allowing her to wish for the hammer's appearance when she wanted it.

If there's one thing that's always bugged me, it's that people who try to pitch or re-write Amy's character to be "better" always use the words "Now I made her head-strong and independent! She's better now!"
And it's like... Amy's ALWAYS been independent and head-strong. Even if her goal is Sonic's heart, she's the one to take the charge or do what SHE wants. She's the leader of Team ROSE, it's even in the name! There's been plenty of instances where it's been shown that not taking her seriously proves to be a mistake; In Sonic 06, she saves Princess Elise all by herself and doesn't even get caught. In Sonic Free Riders, she asserts herself when confronted by Storm and even makes him lead the way so she can find Sonic again. Then there's the whole story of Sonic Heroes. The problem is that people think girly feminine personalities can't be "strong"; every time I've seen someone try to rewrite Amy they turn her into a tomboy, which there's nothing wrong with tomboy characters but that's not Amy.

Every time I try to think of a strong female character that has feminine personality and isn't just "one of the guys," I think of Ellen Ripley. Thinking on it more, Amy shares a lot of those same traits, and anyone who actually pays attention can see that, so anyone who thinks that feminine personalities and traits can't be strong is objectively wrong.
If anything, Amy being into “girly” things, is more unique than being a tough baddie, nowadays being a tough bad girl seems to be more common, so I don’t get why people think of it as stereotypical for a female character to be like this

Dont think the issue with Amy is how straightforward she is with her feelings, so much as her "romance" with Sonic is often portrayed as onesided with Amy being fairly forceful about it, despite Sonic clearly not having interest most of the time.
There might be more things about Amy besides her obsession with Sonic, much like this video addresses...But it is one of the most remebered traits about her because of how prominent it is.
Hope that whenever she appears in the movie verse, they tone down the obsession so her other character traits have more moments to shine.

You could be sensitive and tough at the same time, and your ability to empathise with people doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a push over. I fell in love with the idea of Sonamy after I saw a comic dub of "Who broke it?".
There Amy was portrayed as a motherly character, taking the blame for a crime she didn't do and offering to clean it up so everyone can get along again.
If this is Amy's personality, then combining her nurturing care with Sonic's undying confidence to do and protect whatever is right creates a perfect couple in my eyes. Not to mention the color combination of blue and pink is always a treat for the eyes.

Agree about the non-enjoyment. But what this video proves is that she's poorly written and developed. If a character needs an essay to be understood, then there's something wrong about it's portrayal.
I came across this video because someone compared Amy and Rivet (because they both have a hammer)and I said that Amy pales in comparison, and this video convinced me even more. Rivet has a real backstory, her personality is clear, and all of her personality traits are beutifully showcased in one single game!
Amy needs to get an overhaul, maybe a change of look and a game should have her be in the center of the story with something else than saving the cute little animal (which is another girly stereotype), and being given depth.
As much as I dislike Sonic Boom, this is her best portrayal, both in looks and personality.
See, I always liked Amy, and I don’t think she ever had a personality deficit. She’s cute and stylish, outspoken, fearless and spunky, and she uses the best weapon. My roommate once said “Of course you like Amy. She’s you as a hedgehog.”
My take on Amy is your take on Amy. I am grateful you’ve made this video. Much of what I’ve said and what I’ve felt over the years is in this video. Hearing it from someone else really helps because of how lonesome it can be as an Amy fan, especially in the past. That and this video is all around phenomenal, amazing work. This deserves attention for being so educational and informal on the subject that is the character of Amy Rose.

Never thought of Amy as a stereotype because she likes shopping, baking and wears skirt or dress. She's supposed to represent the average girl. While not all girls like those things enough do that having those traits makes sense. Its refreshing to see a female character that enjoys doing girly things and will jump into action for the ones she cares about. A girl doesn't have too look tough, act tough or be a tomboy to be proactive or do the right thing. Another way Sega could expand her character if they changed her outfit every so often in non spinoffs. Amy would be the type of person would not have the same look all the time and be aware of the current fashion.

Yeah, and I always thought that part of her design change from her 8 year old style and her 12 year old one, was because she was growing up and trying to be more ladylike in an attempt to brush off her childish rascal personality and become more adult and well groomed to try to win Sonic over. So it would totally make sense for her to keep adapting her look.

Her Personality was at its peak in SA 1 and SA 2 but I do like Sonic Boom Amy too where she's less of a fangirl over Sonic

I think all the Sonic girls were actually pretty good influences. Again they all have their failings in writing being kinda, sidelined as the accessory in someone else's story, but when they got their own moments to shine they're all very strong, self reliant and compelling characters and great role models. Even Rouge is actually a really strong female protagonist and she was really overly sexualized

I would imagine the original negative comments were probably from boys. I haven’t seen Sonic, but this character sounds so similar to Sakura from Naruto and fans hated Sakura for a lot of the same reasons for a long time, and they were mainly boys hating on Sakura.
Which makes sense. Naruto was aimed at boys. And boys probably can’t understand or relate to a girl with a huge crush. They just can’t quite know what it’s like being an immature girl with a crush. Girls act stupid too and see hearts sometimes. 😆 I can only imagine boys watching were only focusing on how nonsensical the girl was being, but that’s just the point. When you’re head over heels as an immature girl you’re not necessarily being logical.
Anyways, both this character Amy and Sakura are good characters. Maybe they need to show them away from their crush more or eventually getting more logical as they get over their starstruck phase. But other than that they’re fine.
@@narnia1233 I love Amy as a character, like I do find the over use of the Amy chasing Sonic trope in games weird, but that is Sega not Amy and she has more than enough other qualities to maker he likeable. I find most of the Sonic Heroes version of the characters weird, in fact Amy is probably one of the least weird characters in that game to me, and when written correctly is a phenomenal character, people just write her as a weird stalker sometimes and it overwrites what people see when she can level a high security prison to save someone, not cos she stalks him, but because they are goddamn friends.
Buuuuuut I don't really agree with the Sakura point, while she isn't useless, like she is a very capable ninja, her character doesn't actually do that much at the very start. She has a crush on Sasuke which I have no problem with, but time after time she does beat Naruto up. Like genuinely land some punches which send him flying and it may be a gag or friendly, I find it kinda weird she let alone anyone would get angry enough to punch him or anyone down a street even if it is for love. However she grow and develop, she gets training, realises she may not be the best fighter but does have skills in healing jutsu etc, she recognises her shortcomings though she may not work on them at that moment. She goes to the Hokage for that. She genuinely shows a lot of good development, there are just other characters that grow and develop more, like Hinata or are more interesting than Sakura is. Like to me I find Konan, the Akatsuki member a lot more interesting.
She is by no means a useless or terrible character, but I wouldn't say Sakura is a good character, she is just decent enough for me to enjoy her interactions with other characters and place in the story. Amy is a character I sometimes love to see on screen depending on her version in the story. I honestly don't really dislike any character, I just have them at varying degrees of, this person is sorta okay, they are okay, this person is pretty decent, this person is good, this person is amazing, and I simp for this person (I will never release this list though I can say there is 0 sonic characters, I have a feeling someone will take this the wrong way and go... Listen, you can make plenty of understandable criticisms for Amy, but it is flat out impossible for one of them to be "she has no personality". If anything, having _too much_ personality seems to be a prominent criticism!
Yeah she was so sassy in sonic x. Maybe she could be a bit bratty at times but I liked her. I thought she was funny and imo her flaws make her interesting. The only episode I think she went too far was the planet of misfortune episode with the love ritual. I don’t like how they wrote her in that episode but I can forgive Amy for 3 reasons. 1) sonic clearly already loved her back in that show (he even still cared about her after that episode in the metarex climax). 2) She has saved Sonics life multiple times as well and in the climax she was willing to almost die to go after sonic in that water planet thing. 3) Sega has been trying to course correct her character (IDW comics being a great example) so I like to think she learned her lesson at the end of that episode. So yeah Amy in that show was a bit of a grey character but I still love her.
Too many different personalities
Amy's determination is what makes her an ideal friend (or more, if you're into the ship) for Sonic. Amy doesn't demand that he slows down for her, instead she's determined to follow Sonic wherever he goes, working hard so she can keep up.
It's how Amy went from being a nuisance to Sonic to one of his closest friends. She respects and loves him for who he is and doesn't try to change him, and I think Sonic appreciates that.
That line in IDW about how she doesn’t want to change sonic said it all for me. I think she has grown into an awesome character who deserves more love.
I've loved Amy since I was a toddler. When I met other kids who loved the sonic series, I almost felt like I wasn't ALLOWED to talk about her. Everyone seemed to hate her and think she was just annoying. Also I love your note on how she was shilled to be annoying by the other characters. I’m really hoping they put her in the sonic movies. I think if they wrote her like adventures mixed with heroes and idw comics she would be awesome. Admitting your flaws and relying on other people regardless of their gender is true strength. It's stronger than forcing yourself to believe that the only way you're independent is by shouldering everything by yourself in your life.
You're not a "weak" female character if you rely on a man to help you out when you can't get farther. If anything, you're pretty damn strong if you own up to your own weaknesses.
People who genuinely believe that strength is defined by how little you need to depend on others have completely forgotten that they live in a society.
You rely on other people, men as well, on a daily basis without registering it. The clothes you wear, the food you eat, even the more 'nasty' things like who even helped you get born to begin with.
Dependence on other people is how we function as human beings. There are things we *all* can do, and there are things we just can't, physically or mentally.

Of course that's not what you intended with your analogy, but a single woman shouldn't be compared to raw-ass bread, and a lesbian couple shouldn't be compared to two pieces of raw-ass bread. There's nothing specific to men and nothing specific to women, they don't complete each other, but we all need other people regardless of gender.
As a fellow Amy/ sonamy fan, this video was an insightful reminder of all the things I love about Amy Rose, and a fair critique on her exclusion in the game’s narrative. I never realized out of all the main cast, Amy never had a game focused on her growth or her character, she’s been the cheerleader and pep talk friend as always. While she’s more than happy to cheer on those she loves, her fiery spirit will ALWAYS keep her off the sidelines.
I do wish you could have further detailed Amy’s ability to compromise and explain to what extent she loves sonic, since the idw comics explains how she respects Sonic’s boundaries while also reaffirming that she loves him for who he is, eliminating the idea that her love is vapid or she’s a “fan-girl”. though, I can see why you left it out since it’s a spin off/ alternate universe branching from the last game in the series, it’s not canon to the main storyline.
After the positive reception of boom!amy and idw!amy, Sega’s definitely taking notice of her fanbase and recognizing her importance. we’ve had a sonic mania special about her, plots in the idw series where she takes charge and advances the plot, and most notably, used in clothing lines for puma and hot topic (the latter which portrayed her and sonic as each other’s love interest. which is a HUGE development in of itself). Knock on wood, but I’d say the future is looking bright for our Rose :D
QUICK SIDE THOT it’s always rubbed me the wrong way when the fandom praised Amy for her toned down affections for Sonic in Boom. One of the things I loved about her was her lack of fear in rejection and her complete openness about how she feels towards others. Growing up I’ve always seen that as empowering, especially since I grew in an environment that taught me that girls should quiet their emotions and be more docile. I might be in the minority in saying so, but her open affection towards Sonic is a very important part of who she is. She loves him, she’s confident, persevering, of course she’s going to display her love. it makes sense, it’s an extension of her bold and optimistic nature! Hiding or toning down her feelings towards Sonic seems a bit out of character, it suggests she’s not fully confident or fears rejection on some level. I prefer the modern depiction of Amy openly showing her love for Sonic while also knowing when it’s the appropriate time to do so.

I love that she's bold about how she feels, it adds into her confidence and how much she believes in herself (and it does come off better when Sonic's more receptive to it as well). A thing you'll really notice between where Amy is harshly critiqued and where she's considered good is how the characters treat her. In cases where people consider her a nuisance, the other characters treat her the same way. But in cases where she's treated as she is, the characters are also doing that. I believe a big part of why Amy's good traits go unnoticed is because of the other characters' views on her. I think this is video is great because it highlights those good traits, and looks past what the other characters see through a very objective perspective. Amazing job!
I don’t like how they presented her in generations and how sonic was shoving his hand in her face. And then he showed an attitude after saving her because she made a joke about flirting with him. I think that’s a prime example of what your talking about. There is evidence that Amy is and always was one of Sonics best friends but unfortunately they didn’t portray her as such which lead to people thinking Amy was “harassing sonic” and when really I don’t think that’s the dynamic sega was going for.

I always thought Amy was the typical annoying love interest and didn't care about her. But then I played sonic adventure and I was shocked, she's super cool, straight up one of the better stories just because she's really fun to see in cutscenes, a standout in a game with not great dialogue. Having played more of the games, Amy is one of my favourite characters without a doubt
Yeah same here. I personally loved her in sonic x. That show changed my mind about her. Before that I only really remembered her sonic rush appearance. She had a lot of really sweet moments in that show that made me really like her like when she made sonic that seashell necklace.
I feel like another reason people tend to go as fair as to call Amy a stalker is because of how the west tends to portray Sonic’s feelings for the Pink Hedgehog.
In the Japanese dub Sonic tends to get shy whenever Amy is coming on strong or being overly affectionate. Sega even confirming multiple times that Sonic likes Amy just as much as she likes him romance wise. But for some reason instead of sticking to this the people here in the west tend to have Sonic be down right annoyed with Amy to the point that sometimes you wonder why he’s even friends with her. (Depending on the game of course)
That seems to be a non issue now as it seems the west is now starting to embrace the fact that Sonic does indeed care for the girl and have romantic feelings for her. Even going as far as to hint at it and call him out for it during things like the Sonic twitter taker overs which Are canon.

I love love love Amy! She stole my heart in SA2 when she said “have no fear, Amy Rose is here” and she’s been my favorite ever since.
I. LOVE. THIS. VIDEO, it's charming to see other fans defend Amy from such exaggerated critisisms, she has also been my favorite for many years but it was not until recently that I decided to express it and search much more about her character, I'm glad I did.
I gotta say, the last part left me a bit sad, why is she the only character that never had a story focused around her? Why is she the only character left out when Sega has the opportunity? It also makes no sense that the same fandom that asks for her character to be better, backs off when someone proposes a story revolving around her or proposes a bigger role for her. That's not to say all fans are the same but my experience with the Sonic community has not always been a positive one, in fact, it was more negative than positive.
Anyway, personal tantrums aside, this video is amazing and it definitely needs more views. And when it comes to Amy, I cross my fingers that the next game gives her the spotlight she deserves.

SEGA has ruined its characters just to make sonic look great. Now the other characters don't have any character development and they are just side characters. Shadow is just a rival, Knuckles is stupid, Tails is intelligent guy and Amy is a girlfriend. These are the only character traits which these characters have now.

If anything, fans are responsible for the limited characters. Some fans can be helpful too with art and fangames, but there are other fans who put a strain on sonic with their complaints. one of my favorite amy moments you didnt mention was in sonic adventure 2, when she rescues sonic from jail on prison island. when tails first spotted her on the island, he was like "how did u get here?? its dangerous here!" clearly underestimating her. not only did she get to prison island, a fiercely defended remote military base BY HERSELF, but SHE found and collected the keycard to open sonic's cell. she plays the rescue moment up for laughs like "haha im gonna hold this card ransom to make u marry me" but when sonic says no to the bargain, she respects his lack of consent and frees him anyway, implying she was just joking around. that whole cut scene, i was like "damn this woman got some tricks up her sleeve"
If they ever remake S.A.2 they should make her a g.u.n. agent, that way two plot holes are fixed! And just maybe a small redesign.

It was great development but people downplay it for a stupid fight which all the characters had but only she gets punished for it.

Honestly I'd love to see games that revolve around each of the girls. Though, knowing how certain parts of the fanbase can be, I highly doubt we'd ever see it come to fruition. I'd play the hell out of an Amy game.
I'm glad I actually watched this. Amy is a great character with a awesome personality but is always screwed by the writers at times. She has a potential that can rival sonic.
Screwed by bad writing but really screwed by mistranslation. 4kids especially butchered Amy’s dialogue in sonic x and made her seem worse than she is. Not that I dislike her in the English dub but her dialogue in the Japanese version is far better and shows a lot more nuance to her character.
You deserve waaaaaaay more views and subs, this essay was incredible. I adore Amy and the criticism she gets has honestly never really made sense to me.

As a fellow Amy fan myself, I just want to say thank you! I can't tell you how infuriating it is to have people clown on her when she's arguably the most influential character in the series. Because of her, pivotal moments in the plot occur and without those moments, such as with shadow and silver to name a few, the stories wouldn't have been the same. She's a great role model and I hate that people couldn't see the traits that she had prior to boom, the sonic mania short, and the idw comics. All traits shown in those iterations was already established in her character years before.
Again, this video was great! Even though I'm a guy, Amy has shown me valuable traits and lessons that extend beyond sex and/or gender.
Yeah I think hopefully Amy will see better days and will be appreciated more going forward. I’m so excited to see how they write her in this new sonic prime show coming out next year. Ill say I personally thought she was adorable in sonic x. That seashell necklace episode was so wholesome.

She's literally like my favorite character right next to Metal and it sucks that nobody gives her any recognition. Amy the Hedgehog was basically the Ahsoka Tano(Star Wars) of Sonic the Hedgehog series. She was hated by the fans before but now, some fans realized that Amy was actually a great character. One of them is me and being a big fan of her and Sonic ship, I would love to see her in Live-Action appearance in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie along with Shadow the Hedgehog.
Funny how, just as you said, most of the Amy slander could've been avoided if she played a more pivotal role in her debut game.

Conclusion: Amy Rose deserves her own game
Ever since playing as Amy Rose in Sonic Advance, I liked her unique moveset (hammer and cartwheel). Even just that game's sprite actions and idle animations alone gave little glimpses into her character and personality overall.
Too bad dimps went out with a whimper. They probably could've made her even better!

Personally I've always liked Amy it made me sad she wasn't appreciated more. I love how this video provides some light to her.
But what's unsaid is that she's proof that making female characters more independant doesn't make them less disposable! Quite opposite actually.
Amy's my favorite character too, so much so that my nickname and the first name of my UA-cam profile is Amy. I love her ability to make friends and empathize with others, traits that I want to improve upon. Also I was never annoyed with her love for Sonic. I found it adorable and sometimes inspiring. While she can go overboard at times, she never gives up on Sonic, she saves him on numerous occasions, and their interactions in Sonic X prove how strong their relationship is and how SonicXAmy is more than just a possibility.
Maybe its just me but I noticed people are more critical of female characters than male characters. It's not that they don't want female representation, but they only want "certain" female characters and criticize those who they think are useless, weak, bitchy, etc. like Amy or even Sakura from Naruto. She has flaws, sure, but she went from a normal girl who overly relied on her intelligence and lacked physical strength, who looked down on Naruto for being an orphan, and had low self esteem to learning to empathize with Naruto and even saving his life in the War Arc, being one of the best medical ninjas who surpassed her teacher by setting up mental health clinics around the Five Great Nations, and saving the world alongside Naruto and Sasuke. Despite this, people ignore all that and focus on the worst aspects of her character or what she should have been while not treating Naruto and Sasuke the same way. It's like people don't understand that female characters don't have to be perfect and like male characters they can change and grow.

As someone who only watched bits and pieces of the original series and was never really into the games at all and fell in love with her through fanart and comics. I loved her kind, strong, and topically feminine personality. Even as a younger girl with a very tomboy personality and style. Then as I grew older I saw the way she was viewed and felt ashamed for likening her. When I had been such a huge fan I filled multiple sketchbooks with fan art of her. This video made me feel so much better about my view of her and made me an even stronger supporter of hers.

Believe it or not but I used to dislike Amy and watching sonic x for the first time recently made me love her. I totally disagree with the criticisms of her in that show and I honestly thought she was adorable. That seashell necklace episode was so wholesome!

As a kid I thought she was amazing! She was strong to hold up on her own and didn't take crap from anybody! She knew how to stand her ground and that was one of the many things I learned from her. She wants to help sonic and I love that!

As much as I love the whole entire strong and independent women trope I also enjoy a damsel in distress too. People seem too think that a female character has to be strong to be likable but people forget that women are weak too. And amy is strong in her own way. That's one thing Sonic likes about her.

i agree, soft characters, whatever gender they may be, can be just as likeable as strong characters. strength also doesn’t have to be physical, they can have a strong will but still be in distress, which can make a very interesting character!
Tails & Amy are my favorite characters because of their great character development .
Tails started as a kid that can't defend himself and became a hero of his own.
And Amy literally transitioned from a damsel in distress to a damsel of war .
Even Sega has forgotten what makes sonic characters great .
IMO the comics has handled the characterization of Amy the best .
Fleetway, Archie, IDW, all 3 comic series has a different but amazing characterization of Amy that makes her a really good character

@@erikbihari3625 in Archie its almost the same but better because she does love sonic but that never leads to becoming annoying because unlike some games her most important thing is being a kind freedom fighter , just like the games she tries to help everyone but to a higher extend , she joined the heroes at a young age NOT because of wanting to be with sonic but because of wanting to help people , and became a strong and important member of the freedom fighters , she didnt mention her love to sonic as much as the games because of sonics main love interest being sally acorn ( who just like amy gets a lot of hate because of unfair reasons ) and amy was totally ok with that because she wants sonics happiness even if it means sonic would eventually marry someone other than herself .
in IDW its almost the same as Archie but even better , she has now matured and is the leader of the group and acts as the adult of the group and the voice of reason ( something that she slowly learnt in Archie ) and there has never been any mention of love in that series ( but because sonics other possible love interests dont exist in this continuity its safe to assume amy is his love interest ) but amy is one of sonics best friends and one of the main heroes .
but in Fleetway its different , she has all the good personalities of all her incarnations in different sonic media but her most important thing is being an adventurous warrior , one interesting personality of amy is being girlish and badass at the same time but in Fleetway she was more into being badass , she still loved sonic but she hardly ever mentioned it because saving the world is much more important , actually she slowly started to become a tomboy and for a long time she wasnt with the main characters and went to her own adventures with to help other people that sonic isnt there to help , to a point that loving sonic wasnt even an important part of her personality and unlike her other versions ( that she was kinda a second sidekick to sonic ) she really became a hero of her own but she still is as kind and caring as her other versions ( and also in this universe she doesnt have a hammer and is a great archer instead ) and i think because of that this is my favorite version of Amy
so yeah overall if you are an amy fan you will enjoy all different comics of sonic

Never mind the fact that being love interest doesn't make a character, Man or Woman window dressing, it all depends on how it's written, and quite frankly a bland protagonist like Sonic could use the extra spice. I'm honestly so happy that this video exists, Amy is a huge favorite character of mine and it sucks how much the fandom doesn't really recognize how much character potential and just how great a character she is overall. In general it's honestly really nice to see something like this and how much passion you have to make something like this, I'd really like to see more things from you in the future considering how well you're able to analyze characters :]

My main gripe with boom Amy is she’s disconnected from the main canon and she’s really a different character with a different backstory. I would like her more if they implied it was Amy years later as she got older and matured. This is why I like IDW comics Amy more because they do that. I don’t want them to erase her fangirl past is what I’m trying to say. I want there to be transition.
Ngl prior to when I originally watched this video I hadn't disliked Amy but I never really thought about her character much.
Now, roughly a year or two after I originally watched it, I've grown to enjoy her as a character so much that she's my favourite character [that isn't a villain] in the series.
It's nice to be able to say that there's an animated short that now features _both_ of my favourite characters from the series as well. [That being the winter short with Amy and Metal Sonic :>]
With her positivity in particular I find myself relating to her quite heavily, which leads to me being kinda sad about her depiction in Boom specifically since that's just an entirely different character all together.
In other words, thank you! This video changed my view on the series as a whole in what I see as a net positive way.

Amy Rose is my favorite Sonic female and my second favorite Sonic character. She's cute, pretty, funny, and strong. I just can't get enough of her!
I still don't understand "Sonic had too many friends." Particularly when you consider how much overlap the fandom has with _Friendship is Magic,_ a universe where the answer to the question, "How many friends so you really need?", is always, without fail, "At least one more."
That said, I wouldn't mind some spinoffs: Give Shadow his own games where he works behind the scenes (agent of G.U.N. and all that) to take down crime rings and Chaos cults. Give him actual stories and his own plot lines, instead of just making him Sonic for edgy teens
I like how it seems like they’re also saying that no matter who you are, you can also be like sonic. Amy’s character design is also super nice and she’s pretty. It’s interesting to see her character develop and change over the years.
People should know that every characters will have bad side of them even the main one. Sonic is just ego head and jerk. He just thinking that what he did is right all over time just because he is hero.
I mean that's his personality and it's consistent with him he's a hero and clearly she's not the only one he treats badly.

I love how changing the perspective in this video (focusing on Amy and not Sonic for once) really clarifies Amy's character. I think a lot of us guys never gave her much thought because we only ever put ourselves in Sonic's shoes, and the way we thought of her as a distraction from whats "important" (taking down Eggman) kind of carried on throughout her appearances. Its hard to overwrite first impressions, especially those made at such a young age (as I'm assuming most of us played Sonic first at a much younger age, lol).
I do want to say that even though her character never changes over the course of her appearances, her mannerisms do, which can mostly be chalked up to character acting. ....um, I don't think that's the right term, but what I'm referring to is the ways in which the artists and animators portray her characteristics and how she holds herself. In earlier iterations she has a very rascally (duh) and almost air-headed mannerism, where her later appearances give her a more level headed and almost adult presence. This seems to be a move to avoid the very juvenile "girls are crazy" feeling fans have had towards her, which unfortunately betrays her character as you've highlighted here!
Personally, I had never liked all the Sonic clones. In a world where the characters can be whatever you want, why make more hedgehogs? So for me, from the beginning a pink sonic that also drools over Sonic felt like an awfully cheap character to conjure up, and I wrote her off. When I discovered the Archie comics I was even less incentivized to care for her when the role of the "female lead" so to speak was filled up by Sally- a seemingly more fleshed out and respectable character from the beginning, and Amy became even more of a needless character. But now that I'm older and past the childish notions of seeing the world solely through the main character's eyes, I'm glad I can renew my view of Amy with your insight! It's so nice to see a well worded take from an Amy fan, I have a new found respect for her. d

I realised that amy is pretty similar to aerith from final fantasy 7. theyre both compassionate, feminine and gentle, but headstrong, cheeky and independent too. aerith exasperates cloud, like amy does to sonic, but its clear with both pairs they are very good friends and there is no malice. i guess thats why i love both of them so much :)

I don't think I heard any details on how Amy Rose is "described" when she meets "Gamma" on Sonic X, and how her she was emotionally hurt when she watched him die by his own brother, "Beta". Who also died by Gamma's blaster, both of which died killing themselves, before they release their flickies.
straight up, i love amy so much it's almost painful 😭 and all the time, people get surprised and confused when i tell them she's my favorite sonic character!! but despite some terrible flanderization (something EVERY sonic character has fallen victim to), how could i not love amy? she's passionate, loving, and fearless. like you said, she loves adventure just as much as she loves sonic, and has the strength to get through any battle. and it was *amy's* compassion that finally let shadow realize his actual promise to maria. she's incredible... and it's thanks to writers like ian flynn that the rest of the cast recognizes this as well.
seriously, when i started reading idw and sonic invited amy to join him in her introduction comic, i nearly cried. it felt so good seeing sonic actively enjoy being around amy, recognize her skills as being on par with his, and wanting her to be alongside her!? not just a win for sonamy, HUGE win for amy period. this never would've happened in sa1 or riders, and i'm so happy her character has come this far. i have high hopes for what ian does with her in frontiers!

Well... For a better understanding of why?? The fandom "Hates" Amy, started in Sonic adventure, went to Heroes and goes until today, (Except Forces and TSR, she's better there)

Love your video very, very much. Since I was twelve years old I have been a fan of Sonic and I am currently 21 years old so I have time in the fandom. As someone who admired Amy from the beginning I always saw the qualities of the hedgehog that you marked in the video, but there are people in the fandom (especially the American fandom) who seem not to love Amy very much, which always seemed strange to me. In Japan they adore Amy Rose, in Europe she is also held in high esteem, even in Latin America (my region) she is a much loved character in general, so I assumed that part of the hatred for Amy came from Archie comics. Amy always had an unjustified treatment but I always felt that it was worse in those comics, her personality was exaggerated to the point that they really made her look like a stalker, literally in some comics they justified her sudden growth with the excuse that "she wanted to get closer to Sonic in age "and I think that the general vision of several of seeing Amy as a stalker is due to the Archie comics, so I will not lie, I'm glad they decided to switch to IDW, they really need to let the Freedom Fighters rest for a while once and for all xd
I remember making a post at the age of 17 in the Sonic in Spanish Amino community, talking about how special Amy Rose was to me as a character and because from my point of view she had been created as the sentimental mirror of the franchise, How Amy became a character made to show feelings in more human ways, for example when Sonic dies in 2006 Amy is the only one who cries for him, even with Tails next to him being Sonic a brother to him, he does not show so openly her emotions contrary to Amy. Also talk about her growth as her character and her love for Sonic in the franchise.
The post had a lot of support, more than five hundred likes, but I also received a lot of negative comments saying that I was overvaluing Amy, that mine was just exaggerated fanaticism, that she was just a stalker, that Sally was the one who deserved to be in the games and not Amy, I had to delete certain comments for fear that they would start fanwars. Although I still think the same thing that I published in that post, I no longer wanted to express my fanaticism for the hedgehog so openly.
I'm glad to know that there are still people who defend it and your video has a lot of quality, it really deserves more views. Amy's character has been changing a lot in recent years for the better, in fact I think she is one of the characters that has evolved the most after Shadow. Thanks for watching! I know what you mean about people criticizing you for admiring Amy, it's one of the main reasons I wanted to make this video. There are a lot of people in the fandom that overlook her good qualities and put a microscope to her bad ones, even more than a lot of the other characters. Something I find unique with those who despise her character most is that they attribute all of their negative perceptions of her onto her fans as well. Amy is "crazy, obsessive and immature," so her fans are "crazy, obsessive and immature," too.
I'm sorry you got so much criticism just for expressing your love for a character. If you were overvaluing Amy for talking about why you like her, then literally every Sonic fan is overvaluing the entire franchise.
I didn't read much of Archie, but I did see some of what you're talking about with the pre-reboot series. It's part of the reason I never really got into it.
That sucks, I dint have read Archie Sonic. I think Ken Penders ruined before Archie rebooted the series and later SOA and Archie stoped the license deal. Also different UA-camr make bad Videos. Calling a black hedgehog black isn't racist! Those are just one of the few sonic fans being a couple of dumbasses. They need to retake history class or something to figure out what that term actually means😤. I remember being called racist in middle school just for saying the word black. Fun fact, I'm black. It's ridiculous that there are people out there abusing that term to this day😏
Part of the problem for US fans was also the popularity of Princess Sally from SatAM and the Archie Comics. Then the comics tried to kill Sally off and it just made things worse. I know I was deeply disgruntled with the way they handled that story... A lot of people were, which is why they brought Sally back. But once they finally started including Amy Rose (plausibly a flanderized version too, depending on the writer) and a few other potential girlfriends to replace Sally, it didn't matter how good the characters were or that Amy Rose was from the games; I was irked and refused to give any of them a chance.
I wouldn't have cared as much if Sonic and Sally broke up then remained compelling in their own storylines but there was a clear drive over time to shove Sally into the background in the same way that Amy had been. And Sally was a protagonist who got a lot of focus originally, which is why people loved her so much. Poor Amy was underutilized before and as you noted, this held a lot of fans back from appreciating her, me among them.
I never saw Sonic X but it's also a shame that the US version of the anime decided to reduce Amy's individual significance. I'm glad she finally got some justice in Sonic Boom! I hope that trend continues and one day Amy gets her own spin-off. :)

Your take on Amy Rose is similar to my take on a character from the Muppets named Clifford. Like Amy, Clifford debuted in a small role, but he was given more development over time. He was eventually made host of Muppets Tonight, which further developed him as a unique, human muppet who took his job seriously, had fun in his own way, and felt heartbroken when he thought he wasn’t needed anymore. Sadly, many fans complained about his character change and his appearance to the point where he was forced back into the sidelines until he was forgotten and never used in any recent shows or movies. It was a fate he never deserved because he was the most developed character I’ve ever seen in any muppet. I love Clifford and Amy and would love for them to make comebacks in each of their franchises!

While there is no explanation of where the Piko Piko hammer came from in games, there was an explanation made by Archie comics in their Sonic comic series. I think they just let this explanation explain everything maybe? In the comic Amy had gotten hold of the Ring of Acorns and made a wish to be older so she could be with Sonic. As a by-product of using the Ring she was given the Piko Piko hammer and also given limited wish granting ability allowing her to wish for the hammer's appearance when she wanted it.
in games it could be amy magically conjured it, since the hammer is called ''magic hammer'' and sonic x also shows amy making new hammers when she loses one
