I’ve been thinking a bit lately about the video I put out towards the end of last year covering comments made by Sega’s Chief Creative Officer at the Tokyo Game Show. He spoke a bit about potential new game play styles for the series. Saying that he hopes we’ll all look forward to recent gameplay styles from other games appearing in future sonic titles. And this got me thinking about the potential implications of this statement for the long awaited return of other playable characters in Sonic games.
    In this video, we’re going to discuss the history of playable characters in the series, the various ways in terms of game mechanics that many fan favorites could potentially return as playable characters in the next mainline game, and how it all might work best narratively. Sonic Adventure 1 and Sonic 06 style with individual stories that cross over? Or Sonic Adventure 2 style where each character is a sub part of a single story? Their own dedicated games? Let's dive into the discussion!

    I'd like to see Amy and Silver get their gameplay polished up playing as knuckles tails and shadow again would be neat too

    Sega, Sonic Team, just bring other playable characters back. The games have grown stagnant and so have the stories, Just bring back other characters, make them playable and write a deep and comprehensive story...

      Also having the others back and playable would greatly help telling a deeper, more comprehensive story given that the writers would have to write stuff to match what the characters are doing while playable. Hence why Tails was made to look so weak in Forces, because he wasn't playable and as to make Classic look strong while wonder, "dude, why are you even here?" Because if Tails was allowed to hold his own in a fight and look competent in Forces you'd wonder to yourself about Classic, more so, "dude, seriously, why are you even here!?"

      @@AceCardGaming I dread to imagine what Sonic Adventure 1 would be like if that faker was around during Tails' story.
      Miles "Tails" Prower, the timid little 8 year fox cub sidekick who chases behind Sonic, pushing himself to the limit to get stronger and keep up finally is faced with a challenge of fighting Eggman alone, because Sonic isn't here to save day, and what does he feel? Fear. Because ofcourse he does, he's 8 years old with the fate of a whole city resting on his 8 year fox cub shoulders, and of all the times he faced such danger before he was by his big brother's side, looking to help out in anyway he could because wanted to be just like Sonic. But as the old saying goes, there's no courage without fear, so the little fox cub digs deep to find and hope and courage looking to put them into practice as he tells himself, despite the Doctor's threats to kill him.
      "I'm not scared. I'm not scared... I can do this!"
      Then before the fight can begin, this short chubby blue imposter comes along looking to steal his moment. With out a word, he glares angrily at the fox cub, with his black soulless eyes, knocking whatever confidence he had out of him. The imposter then points up at Eggman's craft, signaling for Tails to get inside it so he can be "saved" by the him, despite not actually being in danger and quite capable to handle himself alone in this fight.
      Thankfully that didn't happen though and Tails got his moment to prove he is the little fox cub who could. Here's hoping he can get another chance to remind everyone of that again soon.

    SA1/SA2/Heroes/06 styles would all be fine with me. Each had their strengths and weaknesses but I truly believe with some updates all of these play styles would work.

    I personally want to see Cream make a return as a playable character again. I think it would be interesting to see how they could use Cheese in new ways.

    I wish Amy and Shadow become like Tails and Knuckles in terms of them always being playable
    Silver needs another chance, he could even use the Time Stones
    I do really enjoy the Mech Shooting, the Werehog and the Treasure Hunting stages but if they don't come back i will not complain, but if they do please give them the DMC5 treatment a 2000's gameplay improved by all the modern design and standards
    And i will always say this but: a mission filled open world game for the Chaotix would be awesome, they could have a detective plot and the Hooligans as rivals

      There is so much potential for spin off and side plot games and it’s so disheartening that we never see anything attempted with this. Like you said, a detective game for the Chaotix. And there are many other characters who could get this treatment. A Knuckles re-origin story, or a Team Dark dedicated game. So much wasted potential.

    I would pick Silver in a heartbeat. It's well-known that he isn't a "fast" character like Sonic and Shadow. So, I'm okay with the speed he had in 06. Contrary to popular belief, it feels nice to just slow down and take your time in certain levels. The only change I would make for Silver is to give him a lock-on cursor when he's throwing objects at enemies with his psychic powers. (think of Yoshi when he's throwing eggs at enemies in the Yoshi's Island spin-off series).

      I disagree on making Silver slower, I feel he should be as fast as Sonic and Shadow, even having spin dash and homing attack too. (Which I feel Amy should share as well, even with her hammer attacks and other unique abilities.) But for sure a lock-on feature for his telekinesis would really help too. Wish both Amy and Silver got to be used more often also.

      Yeah, I remember reading a review or something ages ago where the writer was acting as Eggman and was scoring all the games. He put SA2 as the best one because you can play as him.

    Excellent cases made for all the characters you mentioned! Obviously Tails and Knuckles are the main side characters that we'll hopefully see return, but as you said, Shadow is hugely popular and should be brought back to his former glory, and Silver deserves much more than he has been given. Your video on Silver showed how great a character he is so I feel he definitely deserves more love from Sega. As you said though, the story needs to be there for these characters to have purpose, but the gameplay also needs to be fun. Will Sega be able to balance that? I won't hold my breath but it's fun to speculate!

    I would love to play as the Chaotix and Blaze as well apart from all the characters you mentioned.

    So, personally I want to see a return to styles of play for the characters. lets say four, because that sounds doable. Speed for characters like sonic and shadow, treasure hunting/exploration for characters like knuckles and rouge, puzzle platform for amy and silver, and tails. I saved tails for last because tails could basically go in any of the three, its just kinda tricky with how you'd wanna approach it. But I think if you focused on a few styles, then added characters to play in place of missions, then you can please most people.
    For example, say you beat a stage with sonic your first time through. You got the basic paths and stuff sonic could blitz by no problem. Come back with shadow and suddenly chaos control platforms or areas exist to open different areas of the level. Maybe they're harder, but with a character like shadow you are more the capable of taking it on. Or take a huge temple level with knuckles and rouge. For knuckles maybe its just a matter of going through the temple and getting out, getting some treasure here or there, and calling it a day. Then with rouge you go back through the levels and can open different areas because rouge could fly better then knuckles, but have less air time. Basically think an actual fly vs glide mechanic.
    Just one fans ideas of what I would wanna see. Obviously I have no idea what do with tails and you cannot please everyone, but this is what I would wanna do for three to four styles. Sometimes minor changes in characters that, generally could all play the same on paper, makes a huge difference in replay.

      @Mason Alvarez I have seen his video for SA3 and while I agree with some of it, I personally don't agree that every character should be available for every stage. It sounds kinda funny on paper but I think it also removes some level of personality to character based levels. Aside from that I can agree with your points though, I just think sega should explore their options more.

    Ideas I'd love to see in the next Sonic game:
    -Sonic with standard boost style levels
    -Tails with rail shooter levels, like Star Fox and Kid Icarus: Uprising
    -Knuckles with the gameplay of a 3D beat-em-up (kinda like the Werehog)
    -Amy with those kinda scary "escape the giant robot" levels
    -Shadow with standard Adventure style levels
    -Rouge with treasure hunting levels
    -Omega with over the shoulder third-person shooter levels
    -Silver with physics based puzzle levels and combat
    -Espio with stealth missions, with the objective of getting to the end undetected
    I'd also love to see Cream and Blaze playable again, but I have no ideas for unique gameplay styles for them.

      I'd love to see a cream playstyle where you have to skillfully use cheese and/or maybe a chao you make in the chao garden to protect her and complete the level as she wouldn't be able to take many hits

      That's an excellent idea! That would be a very natural way to integrate the Chao Garden into the games again. Cream's levels would be some of my favorites if they were made your way!

    I know it will never happen, but I would love to see Gmerl brought to a major title with his own story. Maybe it would be a bit much like Shadow's story, but I would love to see Gmerl explore his own identity, how the echoes of Emerl may cause some conflict (seeing him meet other Gizoids would be great), and honestly even giving the nod to the similarity with Shadow by having him be able to guide Gmerl and maybe even form a bond like Emerl did with Shadow.
    Omega would be my number 2 for getting some more spotlight.

    The most important thing now is having the right writers for the games, that's the first thing Sega and Sonic Team needs to fix before thinking on the mechanics of other characters, as for what I will like to see for mechanics, Tails a mix of SA1 and 2, Knuckes treasure hunting SA2 with the radar of SA1 and with Shadow a mix of SA2, Heroes and 06

      The writing is crucial for sure! But the mechanics are very interesting to ponder with all indications pointing to a big shake up in the next game. Your ideas are nice though!

    I grew up with the Adventure games but I'm of the opinion that different playable characters should play similar to Sonic BUT have their own unique abilities to differentiate them, similar to how the classic games do it despite not being a Classic fan.
    I did enjoy the mech stages and Gamma is especially close to my heart but I think the easiest way to introduce new fans to a series whilst not alienating old ones is by having a control scheme that anyone can get used to instead of drastically changing it game to game.
    Sonic: The fastest character but can spindash and homing attack.
    Tails: Not as fast but still speedy and can fly for a limited time.
    Knuckles: Slightly slower than Tails but still by no means "slow" at all. Can break through obstacles no one else can, glide and climb walls to compensate not being able to jump as high.
    Amy: As mentioned in the video, probably plays the most like "Mario" in the sense that her platforming is more precise. Difference is I would probably make her the same speed as Knuckles whilst the running hammer jump would probably give her the highest jump out of all the characters, not counting Tails' flight but she can hit enemies into other enemies too.
    Shadow: Is basically Sonic in both speed and abilities but jumps a further distance than Sonic in exchange for having _slightly_ more slippery controls thanks to his hover boots so he possibly becomes more of a risk/reward version of Sonic.
    Those are my examples. I personally wouldn't want them to add more than 2 additional playable characters at least FOR NOW, simply because I really can't trust them to do it until they feel comfortable making the base game. After they can solidify that, I'll happily accept more playable characters once the Sonic gameplay is polished enough.

    My answer....all of them! Bring them all back!
    Now hear me out.
    When it comes to the main story, I would say use Sonic Tails Knuckes and Amy to introduce four basic core gameplays. Sonic being speed a hybrid of adventure, boost and parkor. (I can go into detail about that later) Tails will take a more high ground approach as well as using his machines like you mentioned, but let the player choose if they want to take that route. I think you explained the Knuckles gsmeplay well enough. I would say just shorten the werehog-esque level length, and add some running elements as well. As for Amy, yes I would say they should use her adventure style and add a few other things such as combat and parkor. And also increase her acceleration.
    Now as for the other characters, if Shadow and Silver were included I would say make Shadow play more like Sonic and give him chaos abilities, and make Silvers similar to how I mentioned Amy's of course his attacks would focus more on his powers. Or introduce a fifth gameplay style. But that might be overkill or asking for too much.
    As far as the story goes I just use Team Sonic and Team Dark. If a third team was added I would say use Silver Amy and a third character (maybe Blaze)
    Lastely, I said we should include all characters. What I mean is we can use them for say a multi-player mode, or you can play them in a stage select mode, that way they are still in the game and they don't have to cluter up the story.
    And please bring back the chao garden and use every character please Sega
    Anyway that's what I have in mind.

      @@AceCardGaming Of course updates would have to be made. Like the option to walk with them with your phone and enhance the mechanics. SEGA really needs to stop adding new things and learn to use what they got. They could make some serious cash with the chao alone.

      @@AceCardGaming Dont forget pokemon. I mean come on! They have chao karate! If they reworked that it could even rival pokemon just like when Sonic rivaled Mario, but maybe I'm overestimating it a bit. But still like you said money to be made!

    What I'd personally like to see is the series going forward would, somewhat, go back to it's roots, and every main game would focus on a mix of Speed stages, Platforming stages, and Exploration and/or Combat stages. Gives only three playstyles to worry about so it should be easier for development, keeps the whole Speed, Flight, and Power trinity theme the series has going on, and every current character in the series can fit into one of said categories. I'd also suggest a universal style among all characters, ala the Sonic World, though it doesn't necessarily have to be Adventure style like that game, just more the concept. I'd go more into detail exactly what kind of gameplay I'd like to see from each category, but my comment get so long at that point, that I'd might as well make my own video.

    I feel for them to return, Sega needs to take notes from the past. We live in an industry now where innovation or replay-value becomes artificial; in the attempt to make a game worth 60 dollars companies throw random shit in for no rhyme or reason leading to inconsistency within the design itself. However back during Sonic 3 and Sonic Adventure 1 to some extent, the differences between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles for example were negligible.
    They could all jump into badniks, they could all run fast, they all played the same at their core with specific traits serving to stand them apart from one another. Heck they all had the same gameplay style as well, (In Sonic 3 and Knuckles); however throughout their differences for as minimal as they were, it presented an entirely new experience replaying the same levels again. Tails could access Area's Sonic could only Dream about... Knuckles lingered in the middle ground as he could access his own unique areas plus get to where Tails could explore for the most part, the trade-off being his slower maneuverability speed in conjunction with the low jump height. Which added a new dimension in tackling boss fights as they indirectly became harder to face as Knuckles.
    Sonic of course had the speed and the Insta Shield, but he could use the Elemental Shields in ways the other 2 couldn't. My point being the replay ability came from the new experience you get fundamentally from the advantages and disadvantages of each character and the core of the design philosophy itself, the nuance in differences presented when their core gameplay remained virtually identical serving as a gateway to new gameplay organically.
    So whilst I wouldn't mind seeing the return of Treasure Hunting stages, or Mech stages. What I personally want Sega to do is take whatever Sonic's core gameplay is; apply that to Tails and Knuckles but give them unique attributes only they can utilize. Providing versatility in how you wish to tackle every stage making the most of each characters capabilities and in turn providing natural replay value; without the use of shitty gimmicks that ultimately break the games entire pace for the sake of variety... Looking at you Wisps. (I sincerely fucking hope they aren't in the next game for real...)
    If you want to put Shadow or Rouge in than do so, make them clones of Sonic and Knuckles with unique traits of their own; standing them apart from said templates.

      So you advocate for them to apply the 2D approach for multiple characters to their 3D games. That would be awesome, and something I’ve always wondered about. Hard to say if/how they would manage it since there is no president for this yet in their 3D games except maybe very loosely in SA 1&2. I’d be totally game for this if they pulled it off!

      ​@@AceCardGaming Essentially, or the Adventure approach in how the characters control and interact with physics. One thing I noticed when replaying Adventure 1 and especially Adventure 2 with character select mods, is that for the most part Tails and Knuckles had the capabilities to beat Sonic's stages but to do so in completely different ways leading to new gameplay potential like 3&K... However when I got to Adventure 2 whilst the same applied for the most part there are certain levels you can't really beat for arbitrary reasons; mainly the code only accounting for Sonic to interact with certain obstacles. (The gates you have to roll through mainly.)
      But for the stages you could tackle, the experience felt different enough because of their different attributes. So when I think of this current Sonic Team and their many shortcomings/limitations. To me personally this is the most logical approach, this way they are focusing all of their attention onto one play style; giving them the time and resources to refine said style without splitting development to develop a completely different game for halve of the experience.
      Its the main principle that really stood out for me when I go back to 3&K, the game compliments itself and rewards the player the versatility to forge their own playstyle, out of the 3 characters you are provided. Variety without actually being varied in the gameplay style itself, and with this being Sega's first attempt at bringing back multiple characters I feel they need to prioritize the foundation for that before they branch off again into wacky directions.

    Great video. Definitely agree with you regards Shadow and playable characters. They definitely need to ignore the critics and listen to what the actual game players want. Common sense, however it’s not always common.

    I get what you’re saying with shadow but still I would prefer if they found a way to make him unique from sonic. I feel like he deserves a bit better than just being an excuse to put more sonic levels in. Like just give him 1 or 2 unique abilities or something (no taking away abilities sonic has and not replacing them doesn’t count SA2) and you know what do that for all the clone characters like rouge and someone else who is a clone (yeah I don’t really remember any other clone characters besides cream but in the advance games she had her 1 or 2 differences so she works).
    I just feel like it would give a lot more respect to the character and make them worth playing as. Yeah I know most people probably won’t and don’t care because “hey as long as it’s still that character that’s all that matters” but I do because I really like shadow and rouge specifically and I would like them to be unique.

      I get your point. And I probably should have elaborated more. I definitely am not against custom abilities for each character to add a bit of variety, I.e. Sonic had the bounce bracelet in SA2 and you could easily give Shadow Chaos Spear/control etc. Would be cool!

      Why is it a problem though? People like playing as Luigi and he's been a Mario clone his entire career.
      My attitude is, variety for the sake of variety is never good.

      BlackYakuzu94 okay that’s fair but unlike shadow and rouge Luigi basically has no story significance and can be chosen at any time although he was mostly just used for the second player but in some games Luigi did have a few differences like How Luigi is slippery and can jump higher in certain games. I still get your point but I think that they shouldn’t bother including other playable characters who play the exact same as others. But maybe you could include them as unlockable skins for the characters or put them in the multiplayer.

      Characters having their own stories is cool, but is harder to implement for gameplay without some issues.
      But even so, I don't think other characters should be playing drastically different from what many people are buying the game for, namely Sonic's gameplay.

    While I agree with most of what you said in the video, I'd love for Blaze to become playable again, as I found her gameplay in 06 to be quite solid and her character is top tier, she has fire powers, is a princess from another dimension, the only girl who has a super form and even had her own alternate version of Eggman via Eggman Nega!! In case you haven't noticed, she is my favorite character and I hate seeing her overlooked (like other characters) by Sonic Team . Another character that's underrated is Rouge, like why she doesn't have a game yet, plus her character in the IDW comics recently has proved why she's competent and can take care of herself without relying on the boys. I 'd want to see her dynamic with Knuckles again, as I found those interactions entertaining and really interesting, like she's flirting with him and he's kinda awkward about it :)
    I'd love for Silver & Amy to have improved gameplay and tighter controls, with Amy being a Mario-esque kind of gameplay with platforming and taking out enemies in the process, as for Silver he'd be good with polished mechanics and more psychokinesis abilities and longer duration for levitating / hovering. Now I know Cream isn't everyone's favorite, but I'd like to see her a little grown up and be able to kick ass (more often), because she is too cute to not be playable and would be a blast to play as just her in a 3D game .

      Blaze definitely deserves more love from Sonic Team. Agreed on Amy and Silver, they had good play styles and with some small updates would be really fun to bring back.

    I would love to see the Chaotix make another grand return in their OWN playable title. I don't care that it's a spinoff title. I feel like spin off titles are the BEST and currently possibly the ONLY way that other playable characters can properly shine on their own. they do NOT need a playable sonic game in order to regain their personalities and the main games don't have to be compromized for it.

    You know what's crazy? SEGA could use its IPs or its Sonic IPs to make some kind of of smash game, they have plenty of characters to use and with a smash like game they wouldn't have to worry about writing a story for them. Heck you could use some comics and TV exclusives to, I always wondered how Cosmo could play in a Sonic game.

    7 playable characters for the 7 Chaos Emeralds.
    6 of them should always be the same in every game: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Silver and Blaze.
    The 7th one can vary by game depending on their relevance to the plot.
    For the next Sonic game it would be interesting to introduce Tangle as the 7th playable character, since it would be her debut in the games (not counting Forces mobile).
    Though I wouldn't mind if it were always Amy either, she's an OG after all and has been in the series for almost as long as Tails and Knuckles.

    If they're not gonna do Team Dark (specifically Shadow) or Team Chaotix right, I hope they never appear. I'd rather they be left alone for later while they still have a semblance of their former characterization instead of having them be tired cash cow caricatures

    Being honest, I want a LOT of characters to be made playable again (or in some instances for the first time). Tails & Knuckles are a given, but also team Rose, Team Dark, Team Chaotix, Blaze, Silver, Marine, Gemerl, the Babylon Rogues (separate from the Riders games), the Hooligans, Mighty, Ray, Honey... you get the idea. I'd even go so far as to include Tangle and Wisper (from the comics) in this list of mine... though I know it's incredibly unlikely and would have a very good chance of being seen as more character bloat among the general fanbase. But yeah, point is there's a LOT of characters I want to see be granted that playable status once more/for the first time. There's just so much untapped potential there.
    As far as playstyles are concerned, the main thing I want is for characters to utilize their unique abilities whenever they're playable. I don't think a return to the 3 main Adventure styles is quite the solution, but it is a start that I would appreciate, and could possibly be expanded to 4 gameplay styles if Werehog-esque combat were to be brought back, maybe utilizing characters like Amy, Big, and Gemerl (though personally I'd prefer the combat be more DMC and less GoW) while obviously cutting down on how long they take to complete. I would also prefer that Boost stages, if they were to appear at all, be their own small segments, like their Mach Speed predecessors from 06. I just don't think there's much more that can be done with boost that hasn't been already, and it's getting stale fast.
    Another possibility I've considered is that they could create stages that multiple characters can complete in ways unique to them, even if the stage mission is always the same - for instance, Tails and Cream could use their flight and gadgets/Cheese to complete a Knuckles-style treasure hunt, while elevated pathways and hidden shortcuts could allow slower characters like Silver and Amy to finish a Sonic-style speed platforming stage in roughly the same time Sonic can without using said paths. It might be trickier to get this "any character" approach to work in gunner stages, but maybe they could instead have more generalized combat stages, with the deciding factor between ranged and melee combat being the character used. Personally I think this could work really well if they made stages similar to the Legend of Zelda Zone from the Lost World DLC (who here remembers that at all?), with pathways that only certain kinds of characters can utilize to achieve missions.
    Also as a side note, I'd really like it if Tails merged his gameplay style from SA1 with that of the CC from Forces, since I always felt like Tails should have had literally everything the CC did in that game (gameplay mechanics, story importance, BFF RELATIONSHIP WITH SONIC) on top of suspecting that Tails invented wispons in the first place. Though if Wisper were to somehow become a mainline character, a merge of the SA1 and SA2 gameplay styles would also be acceptable, utilizing his mega-buster thing from Sonic Battle to replicate the shooting.

      Nice ideas dude! That amount of characters would be great to see but would probably need to be spread over many games. As outside of a spiritual successor to Heroes I wouldn’t expect to see very many in a single game.

Hell, even within a Heroes-type framework, or even a fighting game spin-off, this many characters would be difficult to manage. I'm perfectly fine with leaving some characters to future games, I just really want all these characters to have a future beyond being glorified nostalgia bait (or in the Babylon Rogues' case, spinoff fodder).

    When I think of Tails recently I think of a Ratchet and Clank style gameplay. I just think it would work for his character. It would show how he’s grown and doesn’t need Sonic to be useful by instead making his own gadgets to use in the levels

    Here's the list of characters I'd love to see playable in the 30th anniversary game.
    1. Sonic (with his Adventure gameplay)
    2. Tails
    3. Knuckles (with SA1 style treasure hunting)
    4. Amy
    5. Cream (w/Cheese)
    6. Big (controlling similar to how he does in Heroes, and with easier fishing gameplay)
    7. The Chaotix (Vector, Espio, & Charmy)
    8. Shadow (with his Adventure gameplay)
    9. Rouge (also with easy treasure hunting gameplay)
    10. Omega
    11. The Babylon Rogues (Jet, Wave, & Storm)
    12. Blaze
    13. Silver
    14. Marine
    And I don't need anyone complain to me about how that's "too many characters", cause it's not. Mario has a lot of playable characters, and yet no one says anything. It shouldn't be a problem for Sonic either.

      @@ShadtheSpartan2024 And coming back to this comment, they could have all these characters I listed fill up a meter which they’ll need to charge up, in order to perform special attacks. Like you said. Shadow can use Chaos Control, Chaos Spear, and Chaos Blast as his special moves, Team Chaotix can use their Team Blast attack from Heroes, which gains them more rings. Sonic can use the Time Stop, Sonic Wind, and Blue Tornado attacks. To name a few.

    I feel like this is a lot easier said than done. Implementing these characters has always been problematic; to be blunt, it's a huge risk. If they're not implemented well, its just gonna discourage Sega from ever doing it again, and that's potential money lost.
    As someone who also feels like the series has grown kind of stagnant lately, I do understand Sega's (self-inflicted) dilemma as you talked about. I feel like they need to look back at the older 3D games, and try to figure out what worked and what didn't. Its also a matter how implementation of which methods; the SA1 or SA2 method; the former you get to choose which campaign you wanna play or the latter where you have to swap characters to progress the story.
    Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and Amy are probably the safest (and most marketable) characters to start with; Knuckles & Shadow's gameplay are there as you said, it's Tails and Amy that are the problem children based on their history. It might be safer for them to not be playable and just play a supporting role, but a game without them playable but Knuckles and Shadow are would feel weird...

      While I think this is a great idea, and something I’d actually never thought of. I’m wondering if it would be seen as Sonic Team as too complicated for its target audience. They seem to have a very low opinion of us for the past 10 or so years and are mostly targeting younger children.

      @@AceCardGaming I just think the only way this fighting style could be used is briefly. You can do that style and the game can still get directed at children but let's be honest. They draw in the older generation that's played Sonic since he had his first game to adventure. They need to make it to where you make them happy with it. I mean these are the people that's loved the franchise for so long. Kids should stay the target audience but these games can be enjoyed by older people too as well as young. And I believe that's possible. But Sega doing what needs to happen in our minds is more then likely something they won't do. Cause it's about making a profit at the end of the day. They probably aren't at the point where they can take a risky play style.

    I personally think Shadow should be able to use his chaos powers. Chaos spear could be cool and chaos snap would be amazing. He could possibly use chaos snap as a directional teleport dash or maybe use it to warp upwards and gain height before using his homing attack/air dash to reach new areas.

    Here's hoping Sega/Sonic Team bin the Wisps for the next game and stop using them as stand ins for the other characters and actually use the other characters
    You want to fly like Tails? There's a Wisp for that.
    Climb walls, or dig, like Knuckles or Rouge? There's a Wisp for that too.
    Calling them "power ups" for Sonic seems just as asinine as when Capcom were trying to say "nobody really cares about characters when its their functions is all they really want," as a means to trying to sidestep the absence of X-Men characters in Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. Plus if Sonic Freaking Boom can have the likes of Amy, Knux and Miles playable again in 3D, then there really shouldn't be any excuses not to have them in the next mainline game.

      @@AceCardGaming Right, and with what you were saying with Tails, while I would much prefer him to be more like how he was in SA1, I wouldn't say no to having the odd Mech part of a stage if it was called for. Like maybe 75% on foot and 25% Mech perhaps set in stages built around his actual abilities instead of being dropped into a small portion of Sonic's stages and told to go wild. But I feel its unfair when people say about how Tails' flight is bust in SA1, allowing you to skip good chunks of the stages, when with Sonic's overpowered/busted spin dash you could do exactly the same thing and it is actually praised for that reason! Like I said his flight work better if the stages were actually built for him.

      I'd actually wanna see the Wisps return even if we get more characters and see how their gameplays are affected by Wisps. Cause say, Drill for Tails who can fly would work like an air boost for him or Hover giving everyone Lightspeed dashes or Frenzy being a complete berzerker. Like, Wisps have the untapped potential of how they work with OTHER characters.

    And they could add a multiplayer option where you can play as any character in any stage regardless of the character's playstyle. Like you can play as knuckles in a speed stage that would normally be played as sonic or shadow and his playstyle changes to suit the stage.

    I want to see adventure fields return.
    Sonic and Shadow to have same gameplay
    Tails should retain SA1 gameplay but levels specifically designed to his flying ability.
    Knuckles a hybrid between werehog levels and treasure hunting.
    I would love omega or gamma to return or both sharing a story/gameplay
    Silver would be great to. His gameplay from 06
    For me this would be perfect in an open world/massive adventure field layout.

    Sorry Ace Card Gaming but you could not be more wrong with Shadow. Forces already made him a Sonic Clone and everyone bashed it. The only thing shadow needs to distinguish himself from Sonic is Chaos control. Maybe make it so the more emeralds you collect the more abilities Shadow gains. For example if shadow collects one emerald than he can teleport short distance across the stage. If he collects two emerals he can use chaos spheres, and if he collects three then he can stop time. Just saying.

      I didn’t reference forces though, I referenced Sonic Adventure 2, where he was fully 3D and a main part of the story. Unlike Forces which just tacked him on for 2.5D gameplay. 😉

    I have to disagree that Shadow’s gameplay should be without guns or vehicles. Like you said, gameplay can be fun if done right, and the weapons unlocked in Shadow’s game for getting to an ending were fun and varied: if weapons and vehicles weren’t just random stuff you found in a level, but had reasoning and actual purpose (here’s looking at the truck you find in the arc flashback, that you can’t even use in the *very room* you’re in), they can be fun aspects in their own right.
    I think that gameplay can be indicative of one’s character as well: if Shadow thinks a spin dash or a Chaos spear won’t do the job, any atypical weapon (like an explosive or a heavy duty vehicle) works just as well.
    Again, some of the weapons and vehicles in Shadow’s game *were* fun and unique, they just had to have an actual reason to be there. Take the occasional hoverdisk, for example: I mostly associate their presence with when they were used for pools of acid that Shadow obviously wasn’t going to get across on foot, because that was where they best to be used.

    my opinion...basically all of Sonic's friends including sonic himself. look at Sonic world DX with the vast majority of characters, using speed and momentum in various ways other than the boost formula and boom, a sonic game.
    You don't have to change the main gameplay at all, boost or not, just make a few changes that makes them stand out, like how super Mario 3d world or Crash 4 It's about time did. yes they are not different gameplay per say for 3d world, but a different experience to play, [Luigi is slippery but jumps higher, peach is slow but is able to float, Toad is a terrible jumper while at same time is the fastest of the group] and while yes Crash 4's other cast of characters has short levels other than the main one, they bring something new and fresh to the table[Tawna uses a grappling hook and jump off walls, Dingodile uses his vacuum gun to hover and vacuum up boxes, Cortex uses his gun and does a midair dash]. That is something Sega should reconsider instead off making wisps for powerups or just throw in characters into the game just for nostalgic reasons and not to make things too hard for themselves.
    And they did this in the classics, even advance, Rush and Mania for crying out loud. granted they were handle by a different group but the point still stands.
    BUT if it was for story plot reasons and I have to have my top pick other than Sonic....Shadow, Tails, Amy rose, Knuckles, and Silver.
    Shadow; Basically like your idea but adding more flare to him by using his chaos abilities. his homing attack will make Shadow use chaos control, he uses long range attacks with Chaos spear, and chaos blast is...well a screen nuke. he will have meter similar to his first game but more in line of just destroying enemies. this meter ties in with his chaos spear and chaos blast.
    Tails; I can see is a mishmash idea of both adventure games and Tails adventures. using his flight capabilities while using various of gadgets at his disposable. using his bombs, his t pup, using his blaster from sonic battle, and more. While Sonic is more in line focus on speed, tails is more of thinking outside of the box, explorative. like a faster version of Metroid fi you think about it
    Amy Rose; Now Amy Rose is simple, use her hammer abilities. I can see her more in line of a more focus on platforming than speed alone unlike Sonic where speed is key for him.
    Knuckles; As much I enjoy the treasure hunting stages, I feel like he is more suitable as a faster version of the werehog stages. still is able to glide, still able to climb on walls, still can dig around, but has more focus on combat.
    Silver; Even though people despise that game, I remember enjoying Sonic 06 while playing as Silver. Yes he is slow, but if they speed him up and he can be tolerable. just give him more of a focus on his physic abilities that he can use like making a shield, a better way to stun enemies like a projectile, and boom, a playable Silver.
    hopefully, they will get their chance.

    The problem with Tails' SA1 gameplay is that its too shallow to work by itself. Even the devs released this since half his levels aren't even his flying gameplay.
    I think a combo of Mehc and SA1 gameplay where you swap between the two would be cool
    Maybe even have some plain or sub levels ala star fox 64 to spice things up.

    Also what would be epic would be not only do character's have different playstyles, but they can have levels in different types of 3d or 2d. Like knuckles and sonic could have fully 3d levels with no 2d segments. And tails would have fully 2d levels that are basically puzzles. And shadow or some other character could have levels that have both 2d and 3d segments.

    shooting is like gamma's levels in sa1 or sa2 mechs
    Combat is a mix of the werehig stages and age of calamity
    Stealth is a gameplay style where you go around completing objectives around a level without being seen
    and puzzle levels are levels where you have to complete different puzzled around the area to advance and reach the goal ring
    Every character has the same base acceleration so no one feels that they are too slow
    there are some minir differeneces in each level depending on the character, however in replay mode for example silver can play omegas stages just fine and go a different path and unlovk different things
    upgrades may or may not return

    Honestly, I want the next 3D Sonic game to handle other playable characters like the Genesis games did: still clearly based on Sonic, but have their own abilities that still make them stand out. I wouldn't mind multiple different styles like the Adventure duolgy did, but the fact that we never really done what the Genesis games did is a bit of a shame.
    As for who should actually be playable besides Sonic, preferably the lineup would be Tails, Shadow, and Amy. All three would be easy to fit into any story, are really popular, and a lineup of four characters is a big step up from "Just Sonic and maybe someone else", yet is small enough that it shouldn't cause the story to get overly complicated with too many characters. At the very least though, please let Tails and Shadow be playable and well written. Those two seriously need a redemption after the poor writing they had to go through.

    What if tails had the ability to summon his mech? Like whistling would call it to hover towards where tails is in a level and he can use it whenever. If he gets out, it would remain in place until he calls it again.

    Personally, I'd like to see them try an SA2 inspired trilogy.
    G1: "Sonic Squad" - Team Hero + Amy.
    G2: "Shadow Squad" - Team Dark + Rookie.
    G3: Both squads combine for an exciting conclusion!
    (Amy and Omega may only be playable in minigames.)
    This way they can tell a larger story, and take time to make each character feel unique.

    before sa3 they should make sonic shuffle 2 with sonic,tails,amy,knuckles,eggman,big,gamma,shadow and rouge (chaos and tikal as unlockable) and put sa3 after shuffle 2 with 3 sides;hero-sonic,tails,knuckles,amy dark-shadow,rouge,gammaV2,mecha sonic eggman-eggman,metal sonic,badnik (any?)

    Shadow played best in 06' in my opinion. I'd be on board for Silver being playable again in a heartbeat. Most that can't play him obviously suck. 😎

      I think 06 was a good compromise for Shadow, minus the janky vehicles. I’m also a fan of Silver’s gameplay, minus the bugs. 06 had great potential, it’s such a shame things ended up the way they did.

      Funny thing is that I never had any problems with bugs with Silver's gameplay at all. I don't mind his speed because I play a lot of Legend Of Zelda, and Link is a very slow runner. Lol

      @@Nothavinit00 Oh I’m the same, love Zelda and never had any issue with Silver being slow on foot. A lot of the bugs I experienced arose from the enemies rather than Silver himself. The most annoying thing with silver was the inconsistencies in his targeting when throwing objects. But due to the way enemies were programmed to attack, it could cause a lot of annoying issues for silver, mostly when gliding or performing attacks.

      Easy fix. If you throw an enemy or item, tilt the control stick in the position you want the item to go. 👍
      Or just run up to the enemy, and jump-stun them, or PsychoShock them. Random thought...he'd be pretty OP in Smash. 🤣

      I do tilt the stick, just as I do for homing spin. And I totally abuse the ground pound too! 😅 It’s still just a little inconsistent at times. Especially if you try to throw multiple items in rapid succession, they usually just hit each other and not the enemy. And with the amount of enemies sometimes you need to throw fast or you’ll get hit.

    While everyone want to have different playable characters in a sonic game, i really want to have one of the characters to have their own games xD similar to shadow the hedgehog, imagine a Blaze the Cat game set in the sol dimension made by Insomniac games.

    Shadow's gameplay should be a little different from Sonic's even if it's one or two extra or different mechanics. A more combat focused Sonic with weapons or different moves would be fine. The game would score you on speed as well as the number of enemies defeated and the biggest chain of them you defeated. The goal would be to defeat as many enemies as possible without losing momentum. I rather Shadow use his chaos abilities but if guns are involved I'd want it to play something like Vanquish. Tails could play like a mix of the gameplay of his Adventure 1 style and the Avatar style where depending on what gadget you brought into the level you can use it to access different pathways. You can find new parts to craft new gadgets within the levels.

      There’s plenty of things I haven’t seen that definitely exist. Go check out the poll on the community section of the channel, they are no means a majority but they exist. Any comment section on most SA2 reviews will also show they exist.

    Me: and back then SEGA wasn't really thinking of bringing him or giving him other moves in that game you know. If only plays exactly like Sonic then that could become a problem in the future. I mean think about it. Look at what happened in Sonic Forces when he was a DLC. Not many if not any people like him being just a Sonic clone, with exception on his aura being different when he jumps, homing attacks and boost and he skates and flies when he is running or boosting. Not many people were happy with his game style seeing that he had OTHER moves in OTHER games. Such as Battle, Shadow the Hedgehog, 06.

      He played the same in Heroes, and besides very minuscule differences in abilities, the same in 06 as well. I never touch the vehicles in 06 so to me he played like Sonic. And to be fair, I think most people hated episode Shadow in Forces because it was tacked on garbage with no real depth. And Shadow was unfortunate enough to share the same play styles as Modern Sonic, Classic Sonic and the avatar character. That’s a very different situation to just playing like Sonic in a game where there are other characters that give variety. My point stands, the character was most popular when he played exactly like Sonic. I’m not against giving him customised abilities like Chaos Spear etc, but the nuts and bolts of gameplay should be like Sonic IMO. The Forces argument just isn’t relevant, most people didn’t like much of anything about Forces.

      @@AceCardGaming then again that's as good as giving the likes of Amy and Metal the same moves as Sonic just because they played exactly like him in SA2...whereas we all know Amy and Metal can do more than just homing attack and spin dash. Also, if and I mean if Shadow does get into smash, the lsdt thing I need is form him to have the same moveset as Sonic. And we all know how bad his moveset is in smash. (Well nit bad just boring, annoying and repetitive) but you get the point.

      @@Velocity_YT It’s not remotely the same though, because in SA2 Metal and Amy were only available as multiplayer characters in the speed races. And they were designed to be balanced within that style of gameplay. Amy was slower but could use abilities with less rings, and Metal was the fastest and had a shield but couldn’t use abilities via rings. It wasn’t part of the story and I still see Amy as playing like she did in SA1. I agree about Sonic in Smash, I don’t use him very often either. But I wouldn’t see his appearance in other 3rd party games as very important to the main series.

    10:02 You cappin'. I have never seen a single Sonic, or even just a hardcore Adventure 2 fan for that matter, ever suggest to put Tails back into a mech. The absolute MOST I've seen is people who'd settle for SA2 Tails, or would be fine with Tail adopting the Avatar's playstyle from Forces. An overwelming majority, and the only vocal fans I've seen in my entire 13 year history in this fandom, has just wanted Tails to play like Sonic, with flight.

    Personally, if Shadow returns as playable, I don't want him to play like Sonic. It does a disservice to his character to make him 'edgy Sonic'.
