In this series, we’re going to take a look at, and analyze byte sized sections of the Sonic universe where Metal Sonic and his many variants have appeared over the years. Metal Sonic is consistently one of, if not the most popular villain in the Sonic series. And there’s a good reason for that! But quite often his potential has been completely wasted in the games he appears in. Or at best, has been very underutilized. So join me for a series that seeks to right those wrongs, and give Metal Sonic the recognition he deserves! In this episode, we will be analyzing Metal Sonic's appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 2.

I really liked Metal’s badass depiction in Sonic 4 as it really is viewed to me as the turning point for Metal’s betrayal towards Eggman. Also his theme slaps hard in this game and shows that he’s back, more powerful and ready to destroy the blue blur. I think SEGA making a game on Metal gaining new power and taking over as the villain again. I think another thing that would be cool as well is having the story connect to the mysterious power of labyrinth zone and having the characters discover that power.
Holy crap sonic 4 gave more use for metal sonic then CD. Ouch
While it still bugs me that the bad future version of Stardust Speedway was shown at the beginning of Episode Metal, and Sonic 4 as a whole being an average series at best, I really enjoyed Metal in this game. You took the words right out of my mouth this time with how this game established him as not only a bigger threat for Sonic and Tails to deal with, but set up the foundations for Metal betraying Eggman in Heroes or a possible Episode 3. And seeing him grow in power in Episode Metal was a good way in showing how he got so much stronger in a short amount of time. Plus, I still love the little the detail of the end sign posts having Sonic’s face until you complete a zone, only to be replaced with Metal Sonic’s face after Metal completes a stage. It kinda signifies Metal’s superiority complex in a way.
I was so pleasantly surprised how well the game handled Metal back in 2012. Little did I know what Forces would do with him 5 years later.
I personally think that the bad future design in Stardust Speedway is the encore mode design
I'm not familiar with Sonic 4, so it's nice to hear what it did well and get some nice new lore about Metal. But also like you said it's also unfortunate that these ideas weren't saved for something better.
Glad you enjoyed it. The game is worthwhile for its story alone. It’s a strange One because while this game came long after Heroes, it’s set before it. But if it had come out before it, it would have made a nice prequel.
Suprisling Sonic 4 ep2 treats Meatl Sonic more respect than the new games and even Sonic CD!

Great video as always! I'm really enjoying this mini series and excited to see what the next episode will bring! Sonic CD definitely should have taken this approach to Metal, a constant menace and threat like he should be! It's such a shame that some of the best character development can be found in games that Sega seem to ignore (Metal here, Silver in 06 etc), but we live in hope that these characters will be used correctly again!

In my head cannon Sonic the Hedgehog 4 happens after Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, 3&k, CD, Adventure, Adventure 2 and before Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic Heroes.
Metal is stranded for about a year after Sonic CD (in which Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 happen) , he returns in Sth4, then as a main villain in Knuckles Chaotix, after that he uses his newfound powers in the plot of Sonic Heroes. I think he’s like “Eggman, you destroyed me and left me stranded. You must be the one stopping me from destroying Sonic” so he locks him up and takes his place.
Edit: and yes Sonic CD happens after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. The original games were all about the chaos emeralds and the death egg, why would Eggman forget about them before were fully destroyed in 3 & Knuckles. (At least in my head-cannon)
Silver Sonic was built to be tough and guard the death-egg (sth2), when it failed Mecha Sonic was built for strength and to absorb emerald energy (sth3&k). After both doubles and the death-egg are destroyed Eggman focus’s all his attention on a robot double built for speed and agility with energy attacks and boosts. He gives up on the Chaos Emeralds and death egg for a bit and try’s to take Little Planet.

huh, sonic 4 I've mostly heard bad reviews of gameplay wise (and I dislike how it looks) but the story seems pretty neat. A technically colors era game that actually acts like classic and adventure sonic are the same thing??? amazing

Sonic 4 has always been a dilema for me, where does it fit in the timeline?
My guess is this order
Sonic 1 - CD - 2 - 3&K - Manía (Forces on it's own dimension) - 4 Ep 1 & 2 - Adventure onward
The "Plot Hole" of Ep 2 showing Stardust Speedway Bad Future can be filled with just "Sonic got all the Time Stones by the end"
I think this could lead to a new 2D game (by the Mania Team i hope) in between Ep 2 and Adventure
Take that idea you brought up, Metal after being betrayed twice by Eggman conquers Little Planet and the planet on it's next cycle appears even more destroyed than with Eggman
Perfect chance for another trip on Little Planet (with new zones, no repeats) ending on another deity level threat with Metal becoming so powerful Sonic and Tails need the Power Stones and the Chaos Emeralds, leaving Metal so destroyed Eggman takes him for repair explaining why he's on a capsule in Adventure 1

Ace Card Gaming we do know from leftover files, Episode 3 would have involved the Master Emerald and possibly Knuckles.
I’d love to see Super Mecha Sonic helping Metal Sonic and them working together to pit one ultimate pair against another.

@@mechashadow Dude, that's perfect! Super Mecha Sonic was one of the coolest elements of Knuckles campaign in S3&K, so having him return alongside Metal, just in time for Knuckles to enter the fight again is an excellent set up for a rematch! 👍
Unfortunately, this will never happen with the current Sonic team, but man is it a cool idea.
There is no better depiction than his OAV version. Not only does he have the same silent, cold hearted killing persona that often suits him best, but he has to prove that he is better than sonic at EVERYTHING, which includes saving people. It really added a ton of depth to his character, and not only did it maintain him as an amazing antagonist, but also a sympathetic character as well. Whoever thought "there can only be one sonic" would convey every form of regret, respect, pride, sadness and anger in a single, robotic monotone?

This makes his desperate attempt to kill Sonic in Sonic Heroes feel so much more Palpable.
Imagine being a machine capable of feelings and then you fail at your prime directive.... What Intense Agony must he be feeling right now.
Seeing as the story of Sonic 4 is being discussed here, I can't help but bring up that Overbound's "Sonic Time Twisted" fangame weirdly slots in perfectly after the events of Episode II, with the Little Planet still encased in a half-destroyed shell of purple machinery, Metal Sonic featuring as the main villain (attempting to resurrect Eggman after the destruction of a Death Egg), a much heavier emphasis on Sonic CD callbacks, and even having Knuckles join Sonic & Tails for the adventure, completing the trio. It's obvious that it was intended to take place directly after Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but by sheer coincidence I think it might actually fit better as an unofficial Episode III. It's a great 'what if' scenario for what Episode III could have been like from a story perspective and a fantastic fangame in its own right (as its gameplay is much more akin to that of Mania than Sonic 4 itself), and I like to include it whenever I do a chronological order playthrough of the classic titles; it just makes the continuity feel a little more cohesive for me.

I think people often forget that, even though it was a bad game, Sonic 4 still did some things right. It has some awesome ideas that should not be ignored. But instead people would rather bash it for every little detail.
Definitely some great stuff came out of the game. The story being the biggest one for me.
It was a vast improvement on Episode 1 in every way. And it was purely its marketing as the return to 2D Sonic’s roots that I believe angered a lot of people. You make a good point that in a post Mania world it definitely makes these games a harmless variant in the series.
I'm fine with episode metal but the execution could have been better also I don't like that Sega keeps repeating the stardust speedway boss fight for metal and every time we're fighting him it's like he's eggman's pet metal Sonic is better than that at least give him a unique boss fight we haven't had one for metal in like what years decades!?
Side note: episode metal could have been executed better in gameplay I love the story
You only got it if you owned episode 1 as well. But I suppose it was free so better than nothing. I agree though, really liked the story.

I don't really see them repeating the Stardust speedway race all that often its just that there keep reusing its Song (at even than did Forces at least use the US version which is the first time it was used for a Metal fight since CD US).
But even in that regard do I thing that in Sonic 4 does this work on a thematic level as the rematch against Metal Sonic can be easily be one by using the Double spindash meaning that the ones so hard Metal Sonic fight from CD is completely brocken by nothing else but the REAL SUPERPOWER OF TEAMWORK.

I'll always be a bit disappointed we'll never get an Episode III. The games were serviceable, but cursed from the start by that "4."
Hefty expectations lie within a numbered entry for sure.
I hope Neo Metal is next. Heroes has its issues but loved Neo in it.

@@AceCardGaming I've always hoped for a future main stream game where Metal has a more heroic role like in Rivals 2 and actually has a playable role in the main story and not just restricted to one specific mode like how he was in the Adventure games. It's actually worth noting Metal almost had a main playable and slightly more heroic role in 2 mainstream games. The first actually being Heroes believe it or not. While his role in Heroes as the villain was awesome according to a Twitter post Shiro Maekawa posted in 2018 revealed that the team roster they originally started out with was rather different from what we got and Metal was actually as one of the playable characters implying he wasn't planned to be the antagonist from the start. The second game he almost made it into was 06. There's unused text found in the game's files that say things about Metal. Such as Play Metal Sonic Missions, Play Metal Sonic Episode, Metal Sonic's Theme, Additional Mission Pack "Metal Sonic" so this implies Metal was going to have some playable role in the story.
I don't have too much to say about Sonic 4, or Metal Sonic's portrayal in that game. However, the way he was portrayed in Sonic Rivals 2 is my favorite (next to Sonic Heroes). Seeing him team up with Shadow in that game was something I wouldn't expect to happen in the series, and it was executed pretty well. I'm curious to hear what you have to say about that in a future Byte Sized MM video, and a character analysis of Shard (another version of MS from the Archie comics).

My personal favorite show of Metal Sonic was in the Sonic OVA from 1999, but that one is definetly an outlier when it comes to characterizing metal sense it doesn't seem like many others followed after his personality (For example the fact that he doesn't talk and his brain connection with Sonic, rather than just being a copy).
I haven’t seen the OVA in many years. I really should go back and brush up on it again.

I hold it close to my heart as what I imagine the most a younger/"classic" sonic to be most like and even though it technecally released right after Sonic Adventure 1 I feel like is an interesting look into the closest there was into a personality for classic sonic before the adventure era. The art is really cool too sense it was still all hand drawn and copied the style of the Sonic CD cutscenes. It's interesting to think about what it would've been like if the show was actually successful in Japan instead of just being scrapped. Would Sonic X have still existed? What would've happened in it? ect.

Though I shared this in the first Metal video, I hope you don't mind me sharing it again as it seems fitting, given that Tails was around for this adventure and how Metal comes to see himself as the one true Sonic
There was one little four page manga short I do remember seeing on twitter, which could lead to something, from an artist called aogirinaru. Thankfully there's a (rough) English translation to it as most of the manga's they put out are in Japanese. It seems Tails had been captured by Eggman, and then fitted with some mind control device to see Metal as THE Sonic, hence why he's fighting by his side.

I think if that was to be done a game, maybe instead of Shadow fighting by Sonic's side, it should be Amy. Largely due to the fact that she has a history with the robot doppelganger, and has more of an emotional attachment to Tails than Shadow does.
Also a bit of a heads up should you wish to venture beyond, and check out the rest of what they have to offer. If you're like me, it can be of a mine field with some pictures having more yaoiish leanings where Sonic and Tails are maybe being... a little too affectionate. So yea, watch out for those XD
