  • Knuckles is one of the oldest characters in the franchise making his debut in 1994's Sonic 3. But as the years went o I've noticed Knuckles is becoming increasingly irrelevant over the years and moved further and further away from his roots as a character. In this video I dive into Knuckles continuing my series of in depth character analysis of Sonic characters. And while doing research for this character I found nothing, but untapped potential.

Knuckles has been mentioned to be a shy guy or a loner. He’s lived most of his life alone, and is literally the last of his kind. He’s the ultimate loner character. This means, by nature, Knuckles doesn’t trust anyone, which is a trait Dr. Eggman has used to trick him into thinking Sonic is after the master emerald. By while he did believe Eggman, there is proof that Knuckles didn’t trust him enough to give him the Master Emerald.
In the opening of Sonic & Knuckles, we see Sonic knocking down the Death Egg into Angel Island again. In Lava Reef Zone, and even in the Hidden Palace zone, you see the Death Egg looming in the background, meaning it was partially Sonic’s fault to how Dr. Eggman stole the Master Emerald. It’s called the HIDDEN Palace for a reason. He kept it in there so both Sonic and Eggman couldn’t find it.
In Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic Triple Trouble, and Sonic Adventure, he got tricked each time because the chaos emeralds and master emerald were involved (even the manual states this). Sonic Advance 2 was the first game that he got tricked, and their was no explanation why. Knuckles even quickly changed his mind when Sonic told him too, even though Knuckles is supposed to be stubborn. It had no reason for Knuckles to get tricked other than being a cheap joke. This is what I believe is the first time Knuckles was treated as a comic relief, and nothing else.
Still, I do have one thing I like to mention about Sonic Heroes. This was the first time Knuckles decided to help Sonic that wasn’t in his interest. Usually, when they work together, it’s because they have a common goal, like stopping Eggman and getting the Master Emerald back, or saving the world from a huge threat. But this time, it was because he was worried about Sonic.
Knux: Come on, Sonic. Tell me you weren’t scared. If it wasn’t for us, you wouldn’t have a chance!
Sonic: Maybe you’re right. Thanks Knuckles.
This scene is very special to me because it showed that Knuckles finally sees Sonic as someone he can trust. Knuckles knew Sonic needed help, which is why he left the Master Emerald. And funny enough, Sonic agreed with him, which surprised Knuckles. Even in Sonic Riders and Zero Gravity, he was the first to call out Eggman. And when Sonic said he didn’t think Eggman was lying, Knuckles believed him.
I don’t like his portrayal in Generations and Lost World, mainly because of that reason. His hatred for Sonic feels unjustified, even though they’ve grown passed that. If they were teasing each other, than I wouldn’t mind it, but I just think Knuckles would be more laidback with him. Knuckles sees Sonic as a friendly rival, but it feels like being the rival is the only thing he cares about.
With that said, I’m not saying Knuckles doesn’t have to be guarding the Master Emerald all Willy Nilly. It’s an important part of his character, and I need a good enough reason why he left it alone. I just wish Knuckles isn’t treated as just a gullible joke.

I'm really happy they acknowledged it, but I wasn't a big fan of the ending. It's just another example of a character who is meant to be taken seriously, treated as a joke. And Rouge unfortunately was also treated that way.

I'm still surprised to this day that Sonic Unleashed doesn't have Knuckles. Why? Eggman flipping drained the chaos emeralds & awakened the Gaias. The Gaia temples uses the Chaos Emeralds to put the planet back together.
Should the Master Emerald at least sense all that stuff? Are the Echidna tribe and the Gaia stuff even connected in some fashion? Why is Amy in that game when she did NOTHING to the story?
Am I the only one thinking this while Sonic Team continues shoving wisps and bad writing to our poor faces?...

    • @DaELFGokulio

Reboot Archie actually used that premise when they where doing their Unleashed adaptation, having Knuckles be the first one that Chip met & taking him to meet with Sonic.
The execution was a bit messy, but when it worked, it worked well.

    • @Squishito
      @Squishito 2 роки тому +4

Yeah Unleashed felt like a sort of reboot to me because of how much they left out. You go on a world adventure yet see zero familiar locations from previous games, the art style was super different, and they left out the whole cast. Like there is no way Knuckles would ignore the earth exploding, he would find Sonic and sort it out right away. Where is GUN? Wouldn't they send Shadow to save the world, or wouldn't he do it on his own accord? What about Rouge and Omega? Were these guys just napping or something? But for some reason Tails and Amy are just hanging out in random countries around the world for some reason, even though Amy adds nothing to the plot and Tails gets shafted and replaced with Chip as being Sonic's buddy anyway. And what's the deal with the Gaias? Who built the temples? It's never gone into. It doesn't appear to link in any way to the echidnas. They don't connect it to any established lore but it feels like it's too big a deal for it to just come out of no where. The game made Eggman a slapstick joke too, just want to mention. I don't know, Unleashed has always bothered me and personally it just doesn't feel like a Sonic story. But at least it actually has the Chaos Emeralds in it, unlike the majority of newer games which have erased literally all the lore and history completely.

This is gonna be really wordy and autistic as hell, but I just wanted to mention that in SA2, Knuckles _does_ in fact mention Angel Island, and it does actually appear in the game.
He mentions that Rouge steals it from there in his first recap. Also, the random desert they are in is a part of Angel Island itself. It's basically just Sandopolis from Sonic 3, it's got pyramids, it's got ghosts, it's got an Eggman base in a pyramid with a big stone robot literally called the Egg Golem in it. It's all there, it's obviously a direct reference. The desert location along with Wild Canyon and Dry Lagoon are also the only places in the game with echidna imagery, and in Wild Canyons level theme the lyrics talk about how Knuckles has to "protect this place" and that he has to "do it for my(his) race". These locations are also the only locations on the map that aren't based on a real location near San Francisco, the games settings real life inspiration. There is also a real life island called Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay, right next to the area where City Escape is supposed to take place, this is actually the island that inspired Sonic Team to call the Floating Island Angel Island in the first place. This further implicates that the island should be in the vicinity. On the level select map, you can even see these rocky spike like shapes drawn on the bottom of the desert area, like the earth spikes on the bottom of Angel Island, making it look like it's floating in the ocean. This is the only part that is drawn with this detail. It's pretty crystal clear that it's Angel Island if you ask me.
As a side note, the effect the Master Emerald had on the island not being mentioned might be intentional. You _could_ easily just say that because Rouge stole it off screen, the island already sank off screen as well. But there is some lore in the Japan only Sonic Adventure Navigation Guide that tells us that the island never actually rose into the sky again after Sonic Adventure (Apparently. The translation is hard to find, it isn't on Sonic Retro, I would have to read it myself to confirm, I've only been told by someone else who has read it). Basically, it says that when it crashed for the second time in the Super Sonic Story, it basically never rises again. This is apparently explained as a result of Chaos not being in the emerald anymore. Sealing Chaos away from the world was the purpose of the island floating, so if he's gone, it has no reason to float, thus returning to the earth pretty much forever. This means that The Master Emerald doesn't have an effect on Knuckles island anymore as it no longer floats, thus why he doesn't bother mentioning it and only mentions it's role in the neutralization of the Chaos Emeralds. It being grounded could also explain why Rouge was even able to so easily steal it, she just walked there. The problem with this though, is that in some very few future games this is contradicted with the island being shown floating again. Sonic Advance 2 has it floating on it's world map, but it could take place before SA1, we don't know. And then Sonic Chronicles has it floating, which is pretty damning for this (however Sonic Chronicles is no longer canon soooo...) But, a lot of stuff in SA2 is later dropped and retconned in later games, including the _hole in the moon_ (goddamnit Iizuka) and the connection between Sonic and Shadow, all of that was immediately dropped for the Black Arms shit in Shadow 05. It's likely they originally intended it to never float again, to show some continuity in the games and to change the status quo so Knuckles could more easily join the heroes in later adventures. It does make sense, Sonic Battle even seems to reflect this in some way. The place where Knuckles lives on the Sonic Battle map clearly looks like it's on Angel Island, and you can just walk there on foot from Emerald Town. Sonic Battle also breaks continuity with later games in having Shadow appear with all of his memories from SA2, which no other game really does. Sonic Battle seemed to be running on the Adventure games direct canon, while later games seem to drop it or the very least not care. Anyway, this is all just possibilities, but I like to headcanon that it just was already in the ocean at the start of SA2, allowing Rouge easier access to the island and allowing Eggman to make his base there easier.

I'm happy to report from the future that the second movie fixed him. They made two brilliant changes: They gave him pre-existing motivation to hate Sonic, and they made it so he was looking for the Master Emerald instead of already protecting it. The former makes it so no one can possibly think Knuckles is dumb for allying with Robotnik, and it also solves the logistical issue of where exactly Knuckles came from. The latter keeps him from being tied down to a single location and object for the future. They don't need to come up with reasons for him to not be guarding it because it's not his _job_ here. At least, it's not only _his_ job.

I had a headcanon, mostly taken from the fleetway comics version, that after the events of the death egg, master emerald had been returned and the chaos emeralds were in full power, The Island is protected by a invisible barrier of sorts.
they could probably use that excuse to have Knuckles be able to explore around the world without worrying too much about the ME beign stolen.

While being the Guardian of the Master Emerald is one of the most basic parts of Knuckles as a character, i can understand why they went away from it
Knuckles being it's Guardian and staying on watch 24/7 escencially roots him on Angel Island, which forces the writers to either:
    A) Find a reasonable excuse for Knuckles to get out of Angel Island
    B) Have the Master Emerald be a part of the plot
These two conditions can make writing new stories with Knuckles on them a pain in the ass, and if you make Eggman steal the Master Emerald for the 34837th time you just make Knuckles look extremely incompetent
The Master Emerald just becomes a liability on the long run, and you cant4have every story revolving around the same McGuffin without it becoming repetitive
Then again, they should've had come up with a long-term solution to this problem, doing something as simple as having Chaos guarding the Emerald would suffice

    • @jhuh24
      @jhuh24 2 роки тому

There are a couple of more things they could've done too. Like in a few game where Knuckles was present, (like in colors) just have the team heroes set up base operations on Angle Island so that if something happens to Sonic, Knuckles can step in. On top of that if a bad decided to try to kidnap Tails or Amy, Knuckles would make that extremely difficult to do.
Outside of that Knuckles would totally move away from his duty to save one of his friends or save the world (It would have to be an emergency though) He may also leave if the Master Emerald showed a vison of something that he needs to stop. Or if it warns him that there is something going wrong with the chaos force.

4:21 This is actually not true, it’s explained why it’s in the desert rather than on Angel Island. It’s explained that Rouge sold it off of Angel Island and Knuckles caught chase with her in the desert. This is in the prologue when you boot up the level after already playing it and not beating it in the story. I don’t know whether or not it’s in the English dub, but it is at least in the Japanese script. I don’t blame you for looking over this information.

I agree that Knuckles has a lot of untapped potential. He was perhaps more deserving of a spin-off game than Shadow (Knuckles’ Chaotix doesn’t count, I mean a 3D spin-off). And maybe depending on where it would fit in the timeline of games, a Knuckles spin-off could explain what happened to Angel Island and the Master Emerald and why Knuckles doesn’t have to guard them anymore in the recent games. Knuckles’ corner of the Sonic universe is one that I find really interesting because of his namesake clan from SA1, and I think there’s a lot of story potential with that as well. I even did a video about Tikal on my channel a few weeks ago, and bringing her back could also help flesh out Knuckles more by going into how disconnected he is with his ancestral culture. Since we now know Knuckles will be in the movie sequel coming out next spring, hopefully he’ll make a good impression on new audiences and finally lose that “meathead” reputation from the Boom era.
Great video. I gotta watch more of these.

I don't really think Knuckles in IDW is a good depiction of him, he's still overly stubborn and angry, and shirks his responsibilities to the greater world to protect the Master Emerald. Yes, it's his duty, but that duty pales in comparison to protecting people. Knuckles may be the Guardian of the Master Emerald, but above all, he's a hero.
Personally, I think Ken Penders wrote him best, and fixed a lot of the issues he has today by simply giving him his own cast and villains. A big problem with Sonic is how everyone is crammed together when really they should all have their own things to do, (this is actually an issue I have with IDW,) since, the world most likely has other threats to deal with and Sonic can't do it all. It makes sense to give everyone their own duties to handle while Sonic handles the Robotnik stuff.
Knuckles should have his own series, since he has enough going for him to be a main character. Hopefully one day SEGA can reach out to Ken and negotiate a deal to bring his lore into game form.

If anything, shirking his duty to protect the Master Emerald would also be shirking his duty to protect people. This duty is also part of what makes Knuckles a foil to Sonic. Sonic is as free as the wind, while Knuckles is bound by duty. This clash of ideals is part of why they get on each others' nerves all the time.
I also think giving him a big cast of supporting characters would defeat part of the purpose for his character. His life as a guardian has made him very isolated and very lonely, and he's also the last of his kind... so Ken Penders giving Knuckles a big cast of Echidna friends undermines the entire premise of his character.
Though I'm all for introducing some unique villains for individual heroes, as well as characters getting their own side stories that aren't necessarily tied to Sonic or Eggman. :P

@@someotherstranger Knuckles' duty is to protect the Master Emerald, yes, but there's no reason he can't do that AND protect the world. He could base the Resistance on Angel Island, or he could just have a base built around it and have the Resistance guard it while he does other things. It shows a greater resolve to fulfill his duty when balancing it with his greater duty of protecting the world, and would be a neat dynamic to see. You're also confusing what makes the two's rivalry, it isn't so much their duties but their clashing personalities, and really Knuckles has grown enough to where being Sonic's rival shouldn't be his defining trait anyway.
His purpose isn't to be a lonely hermit, it's to be a stoic badass who can go toe-to-toe with the main character. The whole "sole survivor" thing has also gotten old, and Ken showed Knuckles can work with NOT being the last of his kind, in fact he benefits from it, since it gives him a rich background and his own little corner of the world to have adventures in. You also don't HAVE to make the supporting cast Echidnas, you can do what Ken did and have the Choatix be his team, lord knows they don't do much of anything these days.
For that last part, no, I'm not just talking about side stories, Knuckles should have his own spin-off series that's just as relevant as the main series. Shadow and Silver should too, and it'd be a lot better to split the cast up a bit so every game doesn't feel like it's forcing characters in just to say they're doing something with them or to pander.
Bottom line, you're wrong, and I'd suggest you broaden your horizons, since you seem to be thinking about this in a very skewed way.

@@risso2309 Well for starters, I'm not saying he can't ever leave the Master Emerald behind to go on adventures. He's done that plenty of times before in the games, especially when Eggman's threatening the world with some crazy scheme. My main issue was that, from my perspective, you were underselling how important Knuckles' duty was to his character and to the Sonic story as a whole. Him protecting the Master Emerald _is_ protecting the world, so it makes sense that he'd give it higher priority. Now, does IDW overdo it? Idk, I haven't been keeping up with them so much.
Tbh, Knuckles shouldn't have been the leader of the Resistance in the first place. He's got terrible people skills, has usually preferred working on his own, and while he would indeed _team up_ with the Resistance during such a time, he sure as hell wouldn't be the leader.
If you notice, I said that Knuckles' duty is _part_ of what makes him a foil to Sonic. Or in other words, a _part_ of their clashing personalities. I didn't say it was the source.
And while I agree that Knuckles isn't solely a rival to Sonic, it's still an important part of his character and overall makes their dynamics and team-ups more interesting.
I agree that Knuckles isn't supposed to be just a "lonely hermit" or else his character wouldn't be able to do much. But the fact that he _is_ a bit of a lonely hermit is still an important part of his character.
And as for the lone survivor aspect of his character "getting old"... how? Do you just want more Echidna characters or something?
And seeing as you're going back to Ken, you know that Ken's Knuckles and the canon Knuckles are two completely different characters right? They share some common aspects, but ultimately Ken just wrote Knuckles however the heck he wanted (and I can't blame him too much considering SEGA of America ignored half the canon anyway, so it's not like he had the complete story to work with). Whatever Ken did "worked" because the Knuckles he wrote wasn't canon Knuckles. If you try to do the same thing with the canon Knuckles, it wouldn't work out.
And as for Knuckles not being the last of his kind benefiting him... I'd disagree. Knuckles as a character is strongly tied to the past, which fits his profession as a treasure hunter. His entire background is closely tied to some of the most important lore in the Sonic canon, which I think enriches it enough. And as for having a little corner of the world to have adventures in, it's called Angel Island. It's filled with countless ruins of the ancient civilization (or civilizations) that once inhabited it, and Knuckles, being a treasure hunter, could explore these ruins and discover more about the mysterious past of the Sonic world. Do the games and comics do this? Not quite, but the potential is already there. They don't really need to introduce more Echidnas to make awesome stories for Knuckles. Knuckles could literally just do some treasure hunting (whether it be on Angel Island or elsewhere) and they could do a ton of cool stories from that idea alone. Introducing more Echidnas isn't necessarily better or beneficial for Knuckles' character.
I'm not against Knuckles teaming up and interacting with others, though I'm not so sure about the idea of having him being the _leader_ of a _full-time_ team like what Ken did with him and the Chaotix.
But in terms of spin-off games... I would definitely like to see certain characters get a spin-off game now and then. Like maybe a detective game where you play the Chaotix? Or a game starring Silver and Blaze against Eggman Nega? Something like those would be cool.
Skewed? All I'm doing is taking what was established for Knuckles in the games' canon (from the Classic era to the Adventure era mostly) and wanting him to remain consistent with that portrayal. I guess you can call that "skewed," but it's purposeful. I'm purposely using that particular portrayal of his character as the standard, because that's the one I like the most and believe to be the best for the franchise.
As far as I can tell, what you're wanting is for Knuckles to be more like how Ken wrote him... but the issue with that is that nothing Ken did with Knuckles would fit into the games at all unless it was changed almost beyond recognition (and then what would even be the point?). Heck, most of Archie Sonic Pre-Super Genesis Wave wouldn't fit into the games. And if you want Knuckles to be written that way in spite of all that, then your perspective on what's best for Knuckles isn't much less "skewed" than my own. :P
I'll admit, Sonic Chronicles did a pretty good job of adapting some Archie-inspired material, but they _changed the material to fit the games_, not the other way around. They had to remain consistent with "Knuckles is the last Echidna" thing while making sure the Nocturnus Clan tied neatly into the already-established lore of Sonic's world. The Nocturnus Clan introduced the possibility of more Echidnas without upsetting the established lore too much, while also making it an interesting conflict for Knuckles.
(It's also worthy to note that while Sonic Chronicles fits in _pretty good_, it isn't perfect. It introduces its own problems and inconsistencies, but I digress).
But that isn't the same as straight-up implementing Kenders' Knuckles lore into the series. Most of his stuff wouldn't really work unless it was changed so heavily that it was barely recognizable. Even though the Nocturnus Clan is pretty obviously inspired from Kenders' work, inspiration is as far as it goes. It's different enough to be its own idea by a long shot, which is also why I disagree with Kenders' attempt at a lawsuit over the Nocturnus Clan. If Ken Penders' characters are original enough to legally belong to him, then the Nocturnus Clan is original enough to legally belong to SEGA.

@@someotherstranger I'll summarize how protecting the Master Emerald ISN'T necessarily protecting the world, ahem, it being protected wouldn't mean much when everyone else is DEAD. Also, I fail to see how him being the Guardian (in the games,) contributes to the story when there isn't much of an overarching story to Sonic at all outside the Adventure games. I'm also not saying being the Guardian isn't important to his character, but that isn't ALL there is to him, his personality is what matters most.
As for Knuckles leading the Resistance, he's been interacting with people for a good while now, odds are he would've picked up enough people skills to lead, and even then, you don't necessarily need great social skills to lead, just enough to not treat your men like garbage and keep their trust.
An error on my part, apologies, though what I said still stands.
Eh, kinda, but him being a rival to Sonic hasn't really factored into them teaming up before. When you do it too regularly they become less of a rival and more a grumpy teammate.
No...not really, and even then keeping him that way makes his character stagnant, he needs to be less lonely in order to grow.
What I meant was, the whole lone survivor thing hasn't really contributed to his character much outside of Adventure, and since then we haven't gotten much. What else CAN you do outside of have him brood about it?
As characters, their personalities are the same, so they're basically the same character, the personality is the most important thing TO a character, you fail to realize that. Ken made it work because he understood who Knuckles was and worked that into the story he wanted to tell with him. If you did the same thing with Knuckles now it COULD work, granted you'd have to change the context a bit, but it COULD work, the only reason you say it absolutely won't is because you fail to grasp who Knuckles is as a character.
Angel Island HAS no ruins other than the ones the Echidnas made, Knuckles has lived there all his life, you think he wouldn't have found those already? Angel Island isn't that big either, as we see in 3 and Adventure, so no, the idea it would have "countless ruins" is ludicrous. Also, you can still do the "tied to the past" thing by having more Echidnas, there's also the fact being tied to the past and using that to find things unrelated to you is pointless. Also, "most important lore to the Sonic canon" it hasn't effected anything outside of the Adventure games, and even then there's little tied directly to Knuckles outside of the Knuckles Tribe, which we also know little about. You're overselling the game lore here. I'd also like to note Angel Island is mostly empty wilderness, you can't do much there unless Dr. Robotnik or some other villain comes to take it over, so no, you can't really do much on JUST Angel Island unless you fill it with more people besides Knuckles.
You're missing the point Knuckles should have his own supporting cast to better flesh out him as a character and to provide a more interesting dynamic for him to work off than just Sonic.
No, I mean a full-blown different side-series, you're idea for a spin-off seems to just want them to remain small side characters when really they deserve more.
This. This is what I mean by skewed. You're holding the games to a gold standard when really they aren't, as someone who loves to write and is working on their own book, I can say the game canon is the most shallow, simple, and most underdeveloped I've ever seen. I love Sonic, but what the series needs is a hard reboot with a newly flesh out universe. I don't want Archie's lore to be crammed into the game canon, I want it adapted fully and for it to be the main series. I want characters to have backstories, I want to know the history of the world, basically I want Sonic to be given the same treatment most other franchises get. Yes, I want Sonic to be like how Ken wrote him, because that was how an actual WRITER handles things, not how the Sonic series does most of the time.
As for the Nocturnus, they're Dark Legion ripoffs, that's the whole reason Ken owns them, fundamentally they're the same, just with a different appearance. You seem to have a very poor grasp on what makes things the same, too.

Personally I think Adventure ruined Knuckles right out of the gate and he's just been at that level or worse ever since. He was cool, confident and intelligent enough to lay traps and use Robotnik's machines. Adventure rolls around and he becomes an utter moron with no charisma. He becomes clumsy, gullible, single-minded. He's boiled down to stupidity and bad hip-hop in Adventure. That's not anything like what he was in Sonic & Knuckles.
