8:20 - "Essentially I guess I believe that any piece of gear -- as long as it's functional -- the main thing is to figure out how to make THAT sound good, whatever it is." Jesus Christ it is so refreshing to hear someone say that, especially a guy as good as Krantz.
Best Rig Rundown of all time. So funny and thoughtful. Not only has he figured out that gear is primarily a mental game, he actually makes good decisions based on that finding. Inspiring.
Wayne is hilarious! I love the dry, sarcastic NY wit. I'm sure he is misunderstood on a daily basis. I love his modesty too. What a great player. Best of all, after watching this I suddenly feel a little better about my live rig. :D
I was just thinking his wry humour is totally unstoppable. Talking about himself and Landau and his amps killed me. And commenting that "just make whatever it is sound good", well, free lesson with Krantz ...
My ultimate guitar hero. I love how he's gone back to a Strat, a stock Fender amp, and an unboarded chain of pedals. It seems too that his demeanor has lightened up somewhat. It's good too see. I remember watching his instructional videos where he comes off with a strong sarcastic tone. But hey, it's all about the music and this man totally brings it like no other guitarist can. Consummate musician, WK is.
Wayne is a monster, creative musician. I was so lucky to have been turned on to his work way back in early 2000s by a great drummer and friend, Christopher Allis. Thanks ,Chris!
Guys who are real serious about gear would tell you it's all about the music too. As a guy who plays with people with huge rigs, I was just refreshed by a different approach.
Just was turned on to Wayne Krantz & I have to admit he's got the greatest personality for a guitar guy, so laid back and real how can you not like the man. He's a awesome player ta boot...
A key part of Wayne's approach is to be himself so the music just falls out of him, so he knows himself better than most, and we get something exceptional.
It was about time Rig Rundown started to include non-rock musicians as well. I think you guys already did one episode w/ John Scofield and Avi Bortnik. But it would be nice if you guys could do a Pat Metheny episode. He uses arguably the most amazing gear for a 'Jazz guy'.
Thanks for a really down to earth, coupla guys talking about guitars, gear, giggin'. The same stuff you talk about hangin in a bar, airport terminal, subway platform, etc. Felt like I was hangin with em.
Great stuff! Everything about this was very real and relevant. Krantz's setup is interesting without being over the top and too boutique. And he speaks as a player operating in the real world, not cosseted by a team of techs and a major tour budget.
You can tell Krantz is the real deal by how he talks about the gear. The reverence isn't really there, he's basically just assessing the tools and how well they do the job of translating his musical thoughts. Also you can tell by his playing and compositions! haha
The Vertex scandal was that Mason from Vertex took the affordable BBE Ben Wah and rebadged as a Vertex Wah with expensive NOS parts (not true) and sold it at 3X the price.
Please ask guitarist to PLAY, let us hear the pedals!!!! Its like going to a wine tasting and holding the glass, looking, smelling, talking about the great wine, but NEVER TASTING the wine!!!! the best ones you have done are like Nels Cline (wilco) you get to HEAR them!! Peace and I do love rig rundowns, thanks.
I mean...krantz is one of those guys whose essential sound never changes. Like holdsworth. If you've heard him you know what sound will come from the gear but I also agree haha
@@sonsauvage I was at one of his shows and his Marshall went out, he had to use the fender amp that the opening act guitarist had. I was amazed, just like you said, his tone sounded the same. Didn't matter what he was playing through.
Love WK. Used to see him play at 55 Bar in NYC back in the day. Just noticed he still plays there! Check him out if you're ever in the big Apple. Fantastic tiny venue.
*It's always the relatively low-tech guitar rigs that I seem to love the most. Too much gear = too much fear.* I'm enjoying the smallest lowest-tech guitar rig that I've used for decades and it's been a huge mojo boost. Tell the truth: How much crap do you musicians carry around?
a 67 supro galaxy or a 68 fender dual showman, a relatively simple home made pedalboard and two guitars: a gibson sg and an old fernandes strat as a backup for me and the rhythm guitarist in the band (only for gigs).
Is he daisy chaining from the Devilles input to the Marshals input? or he has a direct out from the Fender?! i wondering, it seems the 2nd input is doing the job!
The issue he didn't want to talk about was Vertex buying other pedals and turning them into his own. He offered an apology and should be given another chance; Mason knows a lot.
A good guitar a decent amp and distortion pedal is all I use. I'm just a home guitarist but I don't use any modulation or anything like that. clean ,crunch, distortion that's it.
Wayne, you should check out the analogman sunface nkt. I’m kind of in a similar boat. A lot of the players I love use fuzz...Gilmour, Hendrix, Billy Corgan, etc...but I’ve just never been able to make it work for my playing. The analogman nkt is the first fuzz that’s made me say “whoa...I could actually use this”
I have thee Identical Amp!!! Very Nice!! Sounds even better with some Peavey Tubes (6L6GC & ECC83 S') Which are commonly found in the Triple XXX series stack Amp's!! If you are into Jazz, Blues & Metal mixture!!! Thanks 4 Sharing Bud!! DEv

He is just too humble. He is a legend and a monster player. Someone should remind him of that.
One of the coolest rig rundowns of all time.
this is my favorite rig rundown so far. Im a big gear nerd but its great to see someone like this.
I feel like someone needs to give Wayne a hug.
Best Rig Rundown of all time. So funny and thoughtful. Not only has he figured out that gear is primarily a mental game, he actually makes good decisions based on that finding. Inspiring.
One of PG's greatest rundowns. What a legend, such tones, such creativity.
Wayne is hilarious! I love the dry, sarcastic NY wit. I'm sure he is misunderstood on a daily basis. I love his modesty too. What a great player. Best of all, after watching this I suddenly feel a little better about my live rig. :D
Phil Sackett the Woody Allen of guitar burners?
Phil Sackett Thought exactly the same
......and everyone generally thinks woody allen is a pretentious douchebag with a penchant for kiddie porn.
I was just thinking his wry humour is totally unstoppable. Talking about himself and Landau and his amps killed me. And commenting that "just make whatever it is sound good", well, free lesson with Krantz

What a genuine bloke. A real music guy. nice one
Really funny guy, almost self deprecating, and he is one of the best guitarists out there. Really admire his funky, clever playing.
Wayne is hysterical, "rig Rundown? I don't even have a rig".
something about this dude i really like... he's down to earth and honest about things
dude, Wayne is the coolest. so chill.
I saw this guy at Berklee college and let’s just say the show was one to remember lmao
Wayne is a monster, creative musician. I was so lucky to have been turned on to his work way back in early 2000s by a great drummer and friend, Christopher Allis. Thanks ,Chris!
I have never seen a guitarist give less of a fuck.
"Do you carry a backup?"
"No"
"Do you ever break strings?"
"Yeah sometimes"
"That is very brave"
"Eh it's whatever"
"I got a bag of pedals"
Guys, I didn't mean this in a negative manner. He's a very relaxed, matter of fact man. That's all.
OK, you meant he's very nonchalant about gear...true..it's all about the music.
Guys who are real serious about gear would tell you it's all about the music too. As a guy who plays with people with huge rigs, I was just refreshed by a different approach.
Preach bro. It's not the gear it's what is being played.
This guy has taught me about being more basic, more zen and just play!! I had never heard of this guy until tonight
Just was turned on to Wayne Krantz & I have to admit he's got the greatest personality for a guitar guy, so laid back and real how can you not like the man. He's a awesome player ta boot...
So refreshing to see this working musician who tours with one guitar and just regular pedals. And he's obviously not a super ego guy.
A key part of Wayne's approach is to be himself so the music just falls out of him, so he knows himself better than most, and we get something exceptional.
I love this guy's attitude.
The most honest, and down to earth, RG that I've ever seen
i like his simplistic approach to gear. Whatever you have make it work for you...
He is so great! and it IS really nice to hear someone in his league say he's plugs and plays!
I can't say how I much I love Wayne man! What a badass guitarist and funny too!
Aaaaaaaaa finally! Monster player, wonderful person, perfect tone.
Might be my favourite rig rundown ever.
The man is naive, funny, but ultimately VERY wise and and just a true player.
Naive? I don’t think that’s the word you want
17:04 The Jimmy Herring reverb story is classic.
Jimmy does like his reverb!
Krantz is so funny in interviews like this, always makes it seem like he hates his job of being one of the sickest guitarists in the world
@Donald Krew i have no idea what you are talking about but good for you
Thanks for a really down to earth, coupla guys talking about guitars, gear, giggin'.
Wayne keeps it real & is revolutionary in his own way.
Still an all-time favorite player ;)
Couple of great guys...nice to watch
I just discovered Wayne and I love his attitude toward the gear and more importantly toward music. Thanks for another great episode.
This was an experience- awesome. "Is this your amp?" - "it's my drivers, first time I'm using it is tonight"
Mono for the win! Wayne is too damn good. Amazing rig rundown! Thank You John and Premier Guitar!
Awesome RigRundown !!!!!!!!!!!
A pleasure to watch ;-)
Really awesome rig rundown. Wayne Krantz totally rocks! Thanks guys!
Good interview, revealing how musicians sometimes think - excellent.
You can tell Krantz is the real deal by how he talks about the gear. The reverence isn't really there, he's basically just assessing the tools and how well they do the job of translating his musical thoughts. Also you can tell by his playing and compositions! haha
THIS WAS A GREAT RIG RUNDOWN! This is really a refreshing look at touring pros using gear like the rest of us.
finally some casual honesty about the imperfect ear.@1:45 or so
God love Wayne Krantz, the Woody Allen of guitar. We love you Wayne!🎸😀
The Vertex scandal was that Mason from Vertex took the affordable BBE Ben Wah and rebadged as a Vertex Wah with expensive NOS parts (not true) and sold it at 3X the price.
Finally!!! I have been asked for this for so long.
Thanks
Wayne's got a great tone!...great person too!
Please ask guitarist to PLAY, let us hear the pedals!!!! agreed x10!
Agreed Kirk
Almost like a breath of fresh air in todays music scene.
Over priced pedals, knock off guitars, boutique amps and Wayne Krantz
but a boutique strat
Such a cool guy! and refreshingly honest.
Love WK. Used to see him play at 55 Bar in NYC back in the day. Just noticed he still plays there! Check him out if you're ever in the big Apple. Fantastic tiny venue.
Could be the best guitarist right now.
Such an interesting guitarist!
Would have liked have heard him play! Unusual.
*It's always the relatively low-tech guitar rigs that I seem to love the most. Too much gear = too much fear.*
I'm enjoying the smallest lowest-tech guitar rig that I've used for decades and it's been a huge mojo boost.
Tell the truth: How much crap do you musicians carry around?
Two twin reverb, no pedals
a 67 supro galaxy or a 68 fender dual showman, a relatively simple home made pedalboard and two guitars: a gibson sg and an old fernandes strat as a backup for me and the rhythm guitarist in the band (only for gigs).
Fender Vaporizer, Custom ESP LTD With Gibson 57 and Gibson P94 Pickups, Memory Man, TC Electronics Flanger.
I agree. Too many people are hung up on gear and not learning how to play.
Re-read what I wrote.
Great interviewer. Does a good job at staying positive and making the guests shine. Great series! :)
wow, I love this guy... very cool, the music is what matters...
Refreshing!
this is one of the best rig rundowns by far
I know what he means about guitars that sit in the corner, vs ones you just want to touch all the time
Great Interview!!
I think it's great they had Captain America do the intervew! Totally thrilled! :-)
Is it too much to ask to turn the rig on so we can HEAR!
Is he daisy chaining from the Devilles input to the Marshals input? or he has a direct out from the Fender?! i wondering, it seems the 2nd input is doing the job!
wish they had done Anthony Jackson's rig! he has a serious amp set up. he probably said no...
in the movie, the role of Wayne Krantz will be played by Fred Armisen
He is so cool!!
That guy's awesome.
I love how he is all about the music and not so much the gear.
It's funny how he makes JB look like a giant...
If anyone else is having a hard time finding a good fuzz box, ZVEX makes a good one.
The issue he didn't want to talk about was Vertex buying other pedals and turning them into his own. He offered an apology and should be given another chance; Mason knows a lot.
THIS IS AWESOME!
Wayne you shred dawg!
It's disturbing that the gear videos have more views than the actual guitar lesson.
A good guitar a decent amp and distortion pedal is all I use. I'm just a home guitarist but I don't use any modulation or anything like that. clean ,crunch, distortion that's it.
Nice interview. I think his string gauges are incorrect though. Unless he's recently changed he uses D'addario 10-46.
I wonder how much John benches.
135
Looks like hes gonna grab Wayne, bite his face, then throw him many yards away
very chill
Incredible player! Enjoyed that! I just wish he had played a bit too ... :)
Great stuff!
10:07 "Well theres no money in jazz and being in a band as an adult is not financially sustainable.....anyway, lets check out my pedals?"
Wayne, you should check out the analogman sunface nkt. I’m kind of in a similar boat. Inspiring individual in these gear crazy times(2019), I wonder if Wayne is still doing this setup?
I have thee Identical Amp!!!
Very Nice!!
Sounds even better with some Peavey Tubes (6L6GC & ECC83 S') Which are commonly found in the Triple XXX series stack Amp's!! If you are into Jazz, Blues & Metal mixture!!!
Thanks 4 Sharing Bud!!
DEv
Wayne's rig currently involves clean Fender Deluxes, and distortion from a pedal. No Marshalls, no tube gain.
He’s like a Smurf
"Man, I have to carry that stuff!" what I'm telling anyone who says I need more gear
Krantz = God
This guy is like he Woody Allen of guitar players, man...
Yes!!
21 minutes of wayne krantz and not a single freakin note! Talk about blue balls!
Jesus this belongs in a Christopher guest film.
I always wondered what Jeff from the Max did after Saved By The Bell ended.
Hilarious dude and great rigrundown
I had no idea John Cusack played guitar!
Proof positive that gear is not the answer; practice is.
So was he going preamp out of the deville into the poweramp of the jubilee?
no, daisy chaining 2nd deville input into the jubilee guitar input, basically like a y cable playing both amps at once
This guy sounds like me! Guitar, amp and pedals
