The Ringers - 2/6/14 - Jimmy Herring, Wayne Krantz, Michael Landau - BB Kings NYC

  • The Ringers play Worried Life Blues. Brilliant guitar work by all three. Etienne M'bappe on bass and Gary Novak on drums. Krantz takes a solo, then Landau, who absolutely kills, then Herring. During Herrings part, they bring the jam to nearly a complete silence as Jimmy taps his frets - there is nothing wrong with the volume at that point so dont go crazy wondering where the sound of his guitar went- it comes back,,,..click 1080

I'm an incredible Jimmy Herring fan, but Wayne Krantz was so subtle yet complex and tasty. And Michael Landau's solo and outro is the greatest guitar playing I've ever heard. Truly genius. What note choices. Incredible bends. WICKED vibrato. This is another level of playing.

Wayne Krantz's whole approach is just otherworldly! From his phrasing to his use of modes is just incredible and it's what make him truly unique!!
Michael Landau is just beyond next level! I was watching his right hand and the dude's use of the pickup selector switch was just crazy cool! It's like he didn't stay on any one tone for more than like 30 seconds or something. And his phrasing is just mind-blowing 4 sure! he's definitely my current favorite Electric guitarist by far!
And then you've got Jimmy Herring... Geez where does it end?! It was just a hellified jam!🎸✌️💯🙏🎼👑🔊

I noticed your comment was from 7 years ago! First of all I agree with everything you said and more! Three players at the top of their game and three players that are so unique and different from one another. My man is Michael Landau but I have to say that Wayne Krantz gets a bad rap for not falling into the blues cliche category. His use of scales and modes is just incredible and his phrasing is I don't know man it's so next level it's ridiculous. And then you got Jimmy Herring who tears it up on all levels and hands back to you and you're thinking what the hell did he just do! One of my favorite videos of all time and I probably watch it at least once a month if not once a week! It can't get any better than this.

I know my brain lurches sideways and bangs into things a lot, but I couldn't help but think this song - _particularly_ Mr. Landau's solo - wouldn't have sounded this way if there hadn't been a demi-god named "Jeff Beck" granting the universe permission to allow noises like that to happen. And I LOVED the way Herring snuck in, even to the extent of goading the inevitable Freebird Yahoo transplant into shouting... "Roy" (?) at 8:25. I guess he thought it sounded wise. (Buchanan DID have a volume knob on his guitar - fer sure!)
Further - weirder - I'd heard Landau's name, but not his playing till I bought his "Organic Instrumentals." And I immediately thought of that, "it sounds like outtakes from a Julien Kasper album." But just because I've know Julien since forever and got his CD's first, I'm sure they have no reason to "steal" each other's style. But - lurch, bang, Julien is now an asst. professor at Berklee where he is _known_ as the "Hendrix & Beck guy." No matter what-all else, a world in which you can get college credit for learning Jimi Hendix & Jeff Beck musicality is better than a world without.

    • @littlequacka

Great guitars players are 10 a penny these days, but truly great guitar players warm our hearts as well as blow our minds. Sure all of these guys are fabulous including your mention of Prof Kasper. However I think you'll find most people would agree that Mike is in a class of his own, regardless of what other talent is around. Beck and Hendrix influenced a lot of players from all generations, so that goes without saying really.

Gol_ D. Kralii *lol* Krantz solo fail ? This guy is making it a point for decades to deconstruct the old patterns. If he wanted, he could blow these others out of the water in his half sleep by repeating the old habits, but he is actually inventing new music on the spot while avoiding those patterns. This guy has a place in the future, along with guys like Allan Holdsworth, while those others never play anything else than "heard it all before".

What u call tosh playing is silly- go check out hundreds of his other videos including the jazz ministry at the baked potato or the Michael landau group live at the baked potato , karizma live , dog cheese or anything else and u will hear what a all around talent he is . +Josh Kearney In the most recent Premier Guitar magazine (Oct '15, maybe Nov?), there's an interview with John MacLaughlin. The interviewer mentioned that Mr Herring included one of MacLaughlin's songs (Hope) on his last album. MacL went on to say that Jimmy's lead break was amazing; that he should have done a lead break akin to Jimmy's (MacL didn't play a lead, choosing to stay with the intricate melody throughout), and that not only was Jimmy an amazing player(John's quote - "I don't know any players like Jimmy") , he was one of the nicest human beings John's ever met! Considering those statements were coming from one of the finest players of his generation, and by most measures a fairly spiritual person as well, I'd say that is about as good as it gets, praise-wise... 8>)

During Jimmy's solo, even my CAT (who was sleeping) put her head up and looked at my laptop, seemingly in awe.

I can't even imagine getting up there and playing the fourth solo after those three just smoked it. Damn......

I'm a huge Herring fan but recently discovered Landau. Krantz I've heard, great player but, seems more of a New York splatter the canvas type. Absolutely love this blues tune and want to learn it. Great players all, amazing how they can feel their way through it so sweetly. I'm from the south and watched Herring start with ARU and Jazz is Dead ........I love his tone, harmonic invention.....readneck jazz monster! Really diggin' Landau too!!

Shame BB King's had to close. It just wan't run right. I went one night and there was one bartender for the whole place - probably 250 people. Also the food was super expensive for the quality. $18 mediocre hamburger.
