  • How does flying gliders in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 (MSFS 2020) compare to the real world? Having flown gliders in real life, I've always wanted to compare the experience offered by MSFS2020 to real flying. This video shows my perspective as a real glider pilot.

    HUGE thank you for this comparison review! This community project was made by impatient enthusiasts without any support by MSFS developers, so we faced hundreds of barriers here and there. Fact that it was chosen tells us we reached some success.

    You'll be pleased to know that in November this year, Gliders will be officially supported by MSFS in its 40th Anniverssary. You will get some highly detailed gliders, with a competely new flight model that has been closely developed with glider manufacturers and real world pilots alike. Really looking forward to it. As things stand, and at the making (uploading of this video) gliders were not supported, and were added by a 3rd party developer. They still did a pretty good job.
    EDIT: And Ijust read the pinned comment 😊

      but most importantly, the weather system will be updated to be fully support things like thermals which are already in the sim, but really require specific weather presets to generate proper thermals (and fingers crossed they implement the new atmosphere CFD, so that rising air will also cause sinking air)

    Landing with speed brake deployed is pretty standard practice in a most fighter jets as it enables the engine to be spooled up, which is where they are more responsive, while also flying slow enough to land

    I got to learn to fly in ASK-21s at West Malling when I was in the ATC in the '80s - it is an experience I would recommend anyone interested in flying. We would be winched into the air (often rather abruptly!) and immediately head towards Maidstone a short distance away and then up to the top of Blue Bell Hill not much more than 1nm away from Rochester Airport (EGTO). Once there we used the thermals coming off the huge car park of GEC-Avionics (now BAE SYSTEMS) and a few of us would spiral higher and higher, our gliders nearly pivoting on their wingtips and we would then proceed to other parts of Kent.
    Who would have thought that less than ten years later I would be employed by GEC-Avionics where I wrote the software for HUDs (C-17, F-5, F-16, Eurofighter) and the fly-by-wire for 777. As for West Malling, well they bulldozed the base of Hurrican No. 32 Squadron in WWII and now it's a housing estate with a handful of roads named after our saviours of the sky during the Battle Of Britain.
    I still try and get my gliding hours in as often as possible, albeit in MSFS (in the DG-808, Gotfriends Discus and the AS33, all free from flightsim.to) and X-Plane in VR - but I'll never forget the thrill and excitement that gliding gave me all those years ago.

    • @TheOneTrueSpLiT
      @TheOneTrueSpLiT 2 роки тому

      @@FlyByMax I just did a nice Alpine flight in VR in the DG-808, it was the first time I've done what I would consider a "proper glider flight" in MSFS of any worthwhile duration. It was watching this video that gave me the inspiration and the necessary "kick-up-the-arse" to get some proper glider flights under my belt and into my virtual log book.
      I'd not tried the 808 with Kinetic Assistant before and didn't know about the "Soaring" weather profiles it provides, so I used the "Alps Summer" profile for this inaugural flight.
      I got DEM data for the Swiss, German, Austrian and Italian Alps by "Troglodytus" available via flightsim.to as separate downloads for each area as well as the MSFS 2020 Google Map Replacement app also from there.
      I flew a scenic 110nm route overflying a number of castles and landmarks. Starting at LSZS I headed northeast towards Scuol, east to Nauders, then south over lake Reschensee and down to Hof am Schloss then east to Merano and finally to LIPB at Bolzano.
      It really was a very enjoyable flight in many ways and I could have gone on for much longer.
      I've uploaded the flight plan I used in Littlenavmap to my Google Drive if you are interested, link is below and the file is "VFR Samedan (LSZS) to Bolzano (LIPB)"
      drive.google.com/drive/folders/171RX5y6EpqC_iEz3BjS0s0PiskcQo2Sa?usp=sharing
      So thanks for the inspiration to get back into gliding for the first time in over 35 years - albeit simulated and in VR - I just need to slide the window back, get a fan pointed into my face and I'd swear I wouldn't know the difference! 😉

      I too flew at West Malling with the ATC but in the 70's in Slingsby Cadet TX Mark 3's. No chance of thermal hunting with them; the best we could achieve on a good day was to do 270 degree turns instead of 90's in the circuit and perhaps throw in a 360 on the downwind leg for good measure. After two check flights with the CFI, who had flown Mustang fighters during World War II, I did three solos and acquired my A & B certificates.

      @@GrahamNicholson56 Unfortunately West Malling was bulldozed and a bloody great housing estate stuck over it, the only indication it was ever there are a handful of road names such as Hurrican, Spitfire, Meteor etc. Which ATC squadron was you in, I was 2158 Sevenoaks when I lived in Borough Green and have many great memories of gliding in the ASK-21s and exercises in Merryworth Woods. 😉

  • @ImpendingJoker
    @ImpendingJoker Рік тому

    Please keep in mind that MSFS has not yet had gliders added to it. Those are coming later this year along with helicopters, so in essence what you are flying is more of a scripted glider on rails than a glider that is actually responding to the atmosphere. Sure it goes up with updrafts but that is more because the coding in the glider tells it to rather than the wings reacting directly to the air. The current helicopters are the same way, they use an external program to force the helicopter to fly like it should rather than the simulator actually simulating the helicopter. So, this is a good glider in that it is one of the only ones out there but it's not actually "flying" in the simulated environment but having its flight dynamics injected into the simulator from outside.

The electric fences which are used to sub-divide meadows are virtually invisible, and the wire cut through the canopy like butter and literally chopped the head of the pilot off.

    Good to see MSFS cares about soaring. I love all that brilliant eye candy! But most important or me are clouds connected to a vertical airflow. As far as I know only (the ugly) Condor-2 offers thermals indicated by clouds.

    • @FlyByMax
      @FlyByMax  Рік тому +1

      I'd say condor is the best in terms of how it does updrafts, as well as aerodynamics (I believe it was developed by glider pilots). X-Plane is currently a little lacking in terms of thermals, but the flight model of its gliders is pretty good. MSFS looks the best and does an okay job with the physics, but I'd say the others are better. :)

    From flying gliders in FSX vs MSFS and seeing and confirming what others say online...the glider is not properly modeled in MSFS....it seems difficult to catch thermals and gain altitude in MSFS 2020 for some reason....and others have said the same thing. I'm curious to see a more in-depth video of someone comparing real life and MSFS and even FSX too ...I remember having a much easier time in FSX gliding.

    Why do glider pilots so often fly with parachutes? The risk of collision is equally as deadly in powered flight but its almost unheard of for a pilot to fly with a parachute unless they are doing military or aerobatic flight.

    • @StefanoBorini
      @StefanoBorini Рік тому +1

      Because we aggregate under thermals, and it gets crowded very quickly. We fly at low speed, high angle of bank, close to each other. Perfect conditions for spins or not seeing someone that is also in the thermal with you. We can be up to 20, 30 gliders in the same thermal during competitions, and likelihood of mid air collision is higher than powered "straight line" flying.

    Condor 2 is far better at modelling the flight dynamics and lift components, although I believe FS2020 is a great improvement on the somewhat tame FSX which I also have. I was a glider pilot from 1985 until 1997.

  • @iain8837

    I’ve tried it in all 3 sims you mention, and I stick to Condor 2. MSFS is just too much of a graphics priority sim without the base physics required. It’s also too stutters and jerky, microstutters are a real pain, they are obvious in your video here at all times. Good comparison though.

      No longer needed. Rules are harmonised in Europe by EASA. The only hard age limits are 14 for solo supervised flight as part of the training, and 16 for the full unrestricted license. You can start flight training in a two-seater with a trainer before 14 without special permission.
      However flight clubs and schools take a closer look at the maturity of a student before they allow starting at 13.
