@@braidedchainI would have left a separate comment, but Scott's encapsulated most of what I was going to say. I am 43, and so I grew up hearing this on the radio. Over the years, I've thought of it from time to time, seemingly out of nowhere. And while I especially love the keyboard in the original, this is actually the best version I've ever heard. There's not one wasted word or note in the whole song, and hearing it "unplugged" accentuates that. All the best.

I'm not saying anything new here. He knows how great the song is hell, he wrote it.
Story telling in lyrics is a lost art.
    Thank you for yours.
Storytelling in the likes of old country music, bluegrass, rhythm and blues and jazz.
From , Peter, Paul and Mary, John Denver, Jim Croche,
Dolly Parton, Porter Wagner, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Buddy Holly, Carly Simon, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Mac Davis, paul Simon, James Taylor. Merle Haggard , Jerry Reed, Huey Lewis, George Jones, Marty Robbins , Tom T Hall , Red Solvine, Hank Williams, the list goes on and on. Such beautiful songs these people had. Thank you for sharing your talents to the world. There's a reason they're called Legends. I cons will stand the test of time.
Who knows, they lost the talent when they decided to get clean and sober and left the drugs alone.
Like George Jones said in a song,
    Who's gonna fill their shoes?

@@chipgaasche4933 Chip ... I respectfully disagree. The numerous bands, singles & duos that perform 'Brandy' ... at least in these parts ... get a great response every time. Why? It's what we call an 'anthem' song-- like 'Don't Stop Believing', 'Sweet Caroline', Living on a Prayer, etc. Music-loving concertgoers scream out Brandy's joyous chorus in unison at the appropriate time! Other than a Beatles tribute ... not sure I've heard 'Obla' on anyone's set list-- with all due respect to the Beatles. This longtime musician is thinking of adding 'Brandy' to our playlist soon. It really paints a picture that never fails earning a smile. Hope we can do it justice!

When this song came out, I was living in Guam with my parents (I was a Navy brat). Since the island had only one radio station, I did not listen to the radio therefore I never heard the song. It was not until I came back to the states that I first heard it. Even then, it was not on the radio, it was on a KTel Record commercial. This was one of the songs featured in the advertisement. I had just gotten a cassette/radio combo stereo where I could record the radio on a cassette player. I found an AM station and would lay awake at night waiting for Brandy to come on so I could record it. I finally, got it. It had a DJ talking over the intro but that was fine. Eventually, I saved up and bought the KTel album just for the song.

This song always makes me think of my older brother Howie. The first time I heard this song was with him and he taught me the lyrics he used to watch me a lot when I was little and we listened to lots of great music like this. Howard became a Merchant Marine and sailed all over the world many times and had hundreds of sailor stories. They would all begin with “So there I was”. He loved the sea, it was part of him, he carried it around inside of him. My brother, my hero, my best friend was 2nd Engineer on El Faro which sank in Hurricane Joaquin with all hands on board near the Bahamas on her way to San Juan PR from Jacksonville. These songs mean so much to us it keeps the memories alive. Thank you it really does mean a lot.

Oh, my goodness, this is beyond wonderful to watch/hear! I have loved this song since I was a young girl in the 70s, and now my youngest child (15) has it on her play list and loves it as well. Thank you for all the joy (and sometimes comfort in bad moments) that this song has brought me through the years!

This song came out when I was 12 years old. I understood the "impossible love" theme of the song, but the adventurous sailor part really struck a chord in me. Since then, I have visited more than 40 countries and lived in 5 of them for a good part of my adult life. I am 60 now and have become that sailor. Still overseas and planning my next big adventure.

Hope you never treated a girl so badly. 😉. As I've said before, he could have married Brandy. If he returned home then good for them. If not she would have been an honorable widow with a seafarer's pension. Sans that, she probably ended up a fat, bitter, lonely spinster crying over that braided chain and wondering how she could have been so stupid. [Love you, Mr. Lurie - shame on your sailor for likely taking the best years of Brandy's life in that harbor town which was likely a venue where everyone but Brandy knew she was being played. Honest man my eye, Captain - more like Ricky's Traveling Man!!!]

i'm 53 and live in mexico where i sailed 11 years ago...i have reconstructed two wooden sailboats and become the sailor of my childhood dreams.
i remember this song when it was new...always remained one of my favorite songs all my life.
not sure what part this song played, but i still react to this song like it's home to me.
recently heard big head todd's new cover...it's terrific! i've listened to it half a dozen times already.

@@barbaramack2897 the beautiful heartbreaking nature of the tune is the irreconcilable love of the sailor and brandy. he CAN'T return...she KNOWS it...they love each other anyway.
