That’s so beautiful! My hi school sweetheart was a brandy kind of girl. She has beautiful auburn hair. I heard this song today on 70s on 7 Sirius XM and as music does it’s like a time machine that allows one to look back in time. Brandy the song is timeless. Even my kids enjoy hearing it.

👩🏽‍🎤I grew up very poor in Glennville, Georgia. There were few fine things my mother was able to share with her seven children in the 1970s other than her belief in God, cooking, shelter, clean clothes, and music. Looking Glass's hit, "Brandy" was one of Mama's favorite songs, and when it played on our household radio, the volume had to be raised; Mama insisted on it. Tapping her feet and patting out the beat on her knee was her way of getting into the song. Now, I have that sweet memory each time I hear the song. Thank you for sharing this music with lead vocals by the original singer. What a blessing for my old heart. Thank you, Elliot Lurie. 🙏❤❤❤👏👏🙌🙌😊

A few times Brandy came on when I was on top of the hill looking at the water over the trees. I remember feeling pure excitement hearing any note of the song, especially the doo doo doo doo doo doo dit dit! To me it meant summer, sand, root beer, freedom and fun at the beach!

"Brandy" was a hit when I was 13 years-old. It's one of all-time great pop songs because #1, it's a truly great story. Yes, incredible background vocals, horns, overdubs, and superb instrumentation, but at its heart, the song captured the world's imagination because of the narrative.
It has everything that a great film has: three acts, a theme, a protagonist, antagonist, mystery, conflict, and finally resolution, albeit without a happy ending. I would argue that the fact that the song has a bittersweet ending elevates the song even more.
The song was written by lead guitarist and co-lead singer of Looking Glass, Elliot Lurie (now a senior citizen), but Elliot still has the pipes! I love this acapella treatment!

Man, this is one of the coolest strip-down tracks I’ve ever heard. It would’ve been a hit acapella! One of my favorite things about the Looking Glass story is that the band held out to sing (& play) on the record, as well as to push for their ideas on the arrangements and instrumentation- not an easy thing to do in ‘71 or ‘72 for a new band on the NY scene without a track record. The backups are just unreal and the lead vocals unique and so COOL that this one song lives on and spans the generations. A great legacy. This is one of those great songs that simply had to be recorded.

This is purely observational after being around the music biz for many years...height seems to have more to do with a singers range. My theory is if the singer is taller, then the vocal cords are longer and thus able to sing lower pitches. Case in point, Peter Steele of Type O Negative (RIP) was 6' 8" and had an amazing lower range. Check out their version of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl". On the other end of the spectrum, Ronnie James Dio(RIP) (Dio, Rainbow, Black Sabbath) was 5' 4"", Brian Johnson (AC/DC) is 5' 5", and Bruce Dickenson (Iron Maiden) is 5' 5". All of those singers have/had an amazing high range. Of course, there are exceptions...Rob Halford (Judas Priest) is 5' 11" and in the day could sing to the stratosphere.
Again, just an observation/theory of mine. The camera angle on the singer covering the bass vocal would tend to suggest he is a rather tall gentleman.

    • @KOttoTV
      @KOttoTV 3 роки тому

The singing voice does not have to replicate the speaking voice. Voice dynamics are based on many factors. But the one factor that is in the control of the singer is the ability to support the voice one is given by musical training, physical health, mostly breathing techniques.

Several years down the road and sailor boy comes bopping into town w/ flowers and the lot, trying to woo my sister, again. I was fortunate to be there when she told him to get over himself, as he stood there, slack-jawed, not believing what she was telling him, thinking she was his and finding her married and expecting her first child. My only comment was a quiet, "You be well, now." The look on that putz's face weas absolutely priceless. My sister just celebrated her and her husband's 20th Anniversary.

Thank you for sharing your sister's story! The romance of "Brandy" is a lone sailor's dream . . . but that's all it is . . . meant for a song, not for life. The magic of the story is her potential devotion for a better man . . . who is every man listening to the song, hoping to win her affection from an absent lover. The fact that your sister pined after her dream sailor for TEN YEARS is a testimony to the power of imagined love. And that, in my humble opinion . . . is why this ballad has such deep popularity. We all want that beautiful devotion . . .

Somehow, with one song, he created an actual "legacy". Even more impressive he shares it here, magnificently, with others who truly respected its' value. Bravo!!

Remembering listening to this song in high school, then in '78 I joined the navy at 17 and when the bar was open on the ship, this song got played a lot, and I mean a lot. Now having been retired for about 25 years, this brings me back to a time when life was easy and the world was a much better place. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I love this version! You know when someone writes a masterpiece, it lasts forever. I hear the song and I am immediately a young teenager with a big crush. You haven't lost a note. Not to mention your eyes are still so sexy. I can say that, I'm a grown up now☺
Sincerely, Carly. By the way, I'm back here listening because they're using Brandy on a UA-cam video.

You and me both, friend. just turned 60...and i choked up, listening. What a wonderful job they did, and takes us 'right back' to our longing for 'decades past'...and the amazing, 'roaring 70's, we grew up in! Cheers!

I'm in, I was in 6th grade and watched my big boy neighbors get drafted, my good friend Ron had a heart transplant 4 years ago due to Agent Orange, he's my Sailor, we send this song back and forth constantly, and he's the reason I wear silver....

Goddamn. I was about 8 when this song was on the radio, my parents got me a portable record player with STEREO! speakers built in... like we all had in oh..1973
It was like a small plastic suitcase, self contained and portable.. it WASN'T a " Close n Play " ( look it up Kids..) lol,...but like 2 steps above Ha!
And this Looking Glass 45 single was one of the 1st records I ever bought along with i think a Jackson 5 ( Probably Ben) , KC and the Sunshine Band- (Im Your Boogie Man) , Abba (Dancing Queen), & Average White Band 45's (" Pick Up the Pieces" ) i remember clearly thinking of this song while riding my bike and all the images in my head of sailors and bars and ships and docks and one beautiful girl...
AND of course,... there was this cute as heck little girl named Brandy Dallas,....you never forget your 1st crush,, she never knew it but i was mad about her & played the living hell outta this song dreaming about her & today 48+ years later if i hear it, I still think of her,... Everytime
TO: Ms. Brandy (originally) Dallas, from Oxnard Ca. wherever you are, I pray you are well and happy and safe and this 10-11 yr old kid from our childhood neighborhood still remembers you ;-).
Bravo Elliot your voice hasn't lost a step. !! I am constantly amazed how many of the music legends from my youth who are still around and able, sound so awesome still today in their 70's & up easily.
    Thank you.

Yeah, my voice is a bass and hearing what he was doing would be nice. For what it's worth, he's mostly in the left audio channel, that helps some. Very nice job.
