In interviews, Dylan Llewellyn - the actor who plays James - has said that he has actually struggled with some of the Irish accents on set early in the show, which added to James' confusion throughout the series.

I think that's the point. He is cute or at least above average but they can't see that through their hatred of the English. I find it fascinating as an English person of the same age at the time. I had the same hair style as Michelle but not her confidence!

I agree we always had fish and chips on Friday I didn't know it was because mum was a very religious person and never let us eat meat on any Friday not just good Friday most people in England love the chippie they definitely do in my city Liverpool sorry mum I eat meat on Friday apart from good Friday 👍

The premise of these young innocent girls/guy living in and amongst a active civil (potential) war breaks up the laughter with a deep dark somber mood that thankfully, only elevates the humor, like a sling shot... Well at the end when the father gently puts his hand on the son-in-law while they are all stopped horrified around the tragedy unfolding on their TV.

I’m Australian and understood everything 100%. I like Derry Girls, Misfits, Father Ted, and Trainspotting mainly because Irish and Scottish cultural references are everywhere in Australia so it’s not foreign to me.
Terrific show. American grew up in US and Scot, Irish decent. My son Irish Scot and English decent. I remember hearing about this time in the news and through the music that was coming out of Ireland. I love the humor in conjunction with the fright and seriousness of that time. Best show in a long time.
I was schooled in Cork in the seventies, where we'd get the occasional guy with an English accent, whose family returned in a rare bit of reverse migration. But I don't recall any of them getting a hard time over it. Perhaps Cork was too far from the conflict in the Six Counties for English accents to be a big deal.
James needed to stand up to Michelle more. I know she did end up loving having him as a cousin, but if he clapped back more and wasnt such melt, it would have felt more like banter and less like bullying.
I think it was to add to the fact that he was the most rational of the group, further highlighting exactly how dysfunctional they are. Reminds me of Jerry in parks and recreation
This show should have way more episodes than it has. :( I stopped watching it when I only got 1 episode left because I didn't want it to end, and the last season will take way too long to premiere. I need more Derry Girls.

@@bengilhooly3616 There's still ties to it today such as consequences lingering and also tension etc, I don't particularly agree with the British Governments way of handling things in Northern Ireland even still, so it's not all in the past, but you're right, most of it is.
