Nostalgia Reliving: Smackdown Just Bringing It to the next generation

- A look back at the first Smackdown game for the Playstation 2 and the kickstart of a new generation.
We'll go through all the different modes in the game and a few anecdotes of how I experienced them back in the day.
Let me know what you think in the comments below and thanks for stopping by!
His THE LAST RIDE is really powerful.
10/10 haha
"Caution, caution, Attention" needs to be brought bacc.
Haha no thanks, I'm barely sane enough now😅
@@VanHellingtonStudios lmao
I can still hear Michael Cole saying, "The Laaaaaast Riiiiide!!!"
Never forget
CAUTION!!!! Still quote Taz saying "this match... is great.." to this day. This game will forever be a part of my life.
Mine too, brother🤟🏻
U my new fav channel keep it up playa
Thanks man👊🏻
This game had the best commentary imo. You would be laughing while playing. Just perfect.
Haha so true, they always surprised me with something new and stupid😅
“OH!”
Oh my god oh my god , Kane … will win tonight , it will be a slobberknocker 😂😂
"He really is a nice person."
It was terrible lol
Brought back so many memories
Happy it did🙌🏻
I love these types of videos, Excellent!
Glad you like them dude🤟🏻
I love this overview. I played these games for countless hours everyday because they are that enjoyable nowadays I buy a wwe game and get bored after a few matches smh. The commentary was funny here but so spot on “they won’t” 🤣
Bro you’re really entertaining and really funny. I hope you keep making more videos like these and yes, just do all the wrestling games. I’m actually really interested in you playing Smackdown 2 for PS1 so that’s my request/suggestion.
Thanks, that means a lot! And I will do as many as possible! And ofcourse, SD2 is high on my to-do list 😉
I absolutely LOVED Just Bring It! I played the hell out of that game! The gameplay was easy to understand and it allowed anyone to pick up and play. The backstage areas were insane though, they were so HUGE, especially the parking lot, I loved the bigger backstage areas, it made the game feel a little realistic, without be too realistic, and the game was generally fun. Found it funny how this was Jerry Lynn’s first and only WWE game appearance. I loved the CAW’s I would create myself and use Justin Credible as my nick name, mainly because it had Justin, and secondly because my Dad would call me that from time to time. Although, I’m generally surprised the table animation (where you set up the table and you put the wrestler on their simultaneously) wasn’t added to the other games. Oh, and the commentary is seriously one of the best, or it could be the worst, if your doing Story and you laugh too much and you end up losing. Overall, this is a fun game, I would definitely recommend this game to anyone.
Your review is a lot shorter than mine haha Agree on the table animation! not realistic enough I guess?
Sheeeesh. Smackdown 2 was my last wrestling game until 2K14. Huge nostalgia hit here. These games were corny but so fun, and unlike todays games- they actually had a soul.
Couldn't agree more👌🏻
Needing to use up almost half a memory card was a heavy cost that thankfully the later games would dramatically cut while still adding more customization options. And yet, there were some things Just Bring It did better and Yuke's, for whatever reason, never brought to later games like the 8-player matches and in crowd brawls you mentioned.
One funny detail I remember was, if you played any match with all superstars controlled by players and just left them idling, Taz would eventually start taunting *YOU* for not playing the game!
Taz: Come on! Kitty, kitty!
Cole: Show some respect. Don't say that!
Probably the only example commentary being smart. I still laugh at "The Undertaker...was great last night!"
Yeah Taz I bet he was
Oh man, completely forgot about that haha good find!
summer holidays, my brother and I, playing this for hours and hours, day after day, this was our most played game growing up. Tornado tag team was always a favourite of ours for sure. 10/10. Even losing my brother to cancer years later, the memories of this game, playing with him will remain with me forever.
Great video keep up the good work.
Thanks, I'll do my best👍
23:06 Feeling the same thing there SHUT UPPPPPPP!!
Damn it🤣
SmackDown 2 had the greatest season mode of all time.
Personally, I liked No Mercy's on N64 better but glad you enjoyed it.
The rare thing in this day and age is someone having an opinion and others respecting it. I respect yours.
That's not how you say raw 2
@@i_used_adblock_to_watch_this smackdown shut your mouth
I have to go Smackdown SYM for greatest ever
“KANE! Is the most dangerous man in the World Wrestling Federation.”
I also loved the fact that you pointed out that the animations to most of the moves used in this game, yuke/wwe would keep using those same animations in mostly all wrestling games that would come after… I’m talking like to atleast wwe 13! 😂😂 it’s little things like that real ones peep😂. I always peeped that and ALWAYS loved the fact that they never changed those move animations
You liked that? I thought it was extremely lazy on yukes part.
@@i_used_adblock_to_watch_this yes man, I loved the fact that they never removed the same ole moves and changed even the simple animations for quite awhile! They were done so perfect imo animation wise. They look just like the actual wrestler that did them doing them! 🔥 with the times those early games came out and how video gaming was back then! Everything hard hitting and dramatic which specifically fit for those graphics especially back then! But the fact they still kept the moves in wresting yuke games for years I never complained about it and loved it! 😂🤷♂️ For example the original Rhyno gore! The Taraji buzzsaw kick! Every RVD move man just etc etc..! I’d use those movesets and stuff for CAWS! Of course this all in my opinion though some people might feel like as years go by and new games come, and gaming gets upgrading and new graphics and stuff like that that they should update animations which they would eventually do come like wwe 2k15. (i believe that was legit the first wrestling game they started to update new animations and stuff to look more modern! Could’ve started at 13 or 2k14 or some like that I might be wrong but I believ it was 15) I know this cause I played that one and probably the last wrestling game I ever purchased… I remember this because I started to see the change in the animations of moves in the game and how slow and modern they were looking. like moves like triple hs pedigree where the opponent literally bounced up off the mat after the move! or a Swanton bomb they were more modernized and weren’t looking like they were on just bring it and I was like nah I’m out 2k taking over now…✌🏿😂
@@i_used_adblock_to_watch_this I think I’m just old fashioned and classical.
This one has the sd2 gameplay but still started to have more of a sim feel to it. The commentary was the best part. It was so bad that it was epic and memorable after 22 years. The graphics still were a huge upgrade from sd2.
Was barely an upgrade
No way! I always played my first match in every wrestling game I got from smackdown just bring it onward, as Kane. I can't believe you did the same thing! I still remember my first match. Kane versus Ivory in a TLC match on smackdown. This game brings back a lot of memories!
Thank you this is a great memory 😢
Glad you enjoyed it! Atleast I hope you did😊
You have a kind of off beat sense of humor and I’m here for it haha
Haha enjoy the ride, or something😜
Great videos buddy. Super nostalgic!
Thanks dude🤟🏻
@VanHellington Studios another great video Good job! 👍
man your videos are amazing, really you take us back to those beautiful days of Smakdown games keep doing this stuff

Sorry for all the comments. You just started here recently and you deserve all the love and support. I'm here to stay man.
That don’t you start killed me 😂😭 wrestling games will never be this fun ever again at this point you have to do shut your mouth, even if you never played it.. 🔥

He randomly popped up with Smackdown 1 and that video got me to sub. Dude is entertaining and enjoyable to watch.
Please do! It's so much fun
@@VanHellingtonStudios Will do! P.s. I loved hearing your Dutch perspective on growing up a wrestling fan in the Attitude era. I always wondered if it was as crazy in the EU as it was in the US.
@@HALBY400 just a fraction of the craziness, but the few fans were passionate. How couldn't you be🤷🏻♂️
Although the commentary isn’t the best, I do like when they call out regular moves, backbreaker, elbow drop, reverse chin lock, scoot slam, choke, etc.
This is really compelling, high quality content - well done!
I appreciate that man, thanks🤟🏻
I'm very excited to play this game once I finally get a new TV this game has so much variety.
Have fun!
I love how you went through multiple characters for story mode! Lots of other reviews just pick Jeff Hardy and calls it a day. Learned some new things today. Thanks!
Glad to hear that, made it worth the effort ☺
You did a really good job on this video. Thanks for sharing.
Appreciate that dude
This…. WWE Smackdown just Bring it… retrospective… is great
Heeeeeyyyyy! Rudy de Leon... is the best... commenter... I've ever had
Was definitely futuristic at the time, i seen someone playing it at a gameshop and it blew my little mind. Eventually played the demo at my cousins who didnt give a shit about wrestling or gaming which was shit because we couldnt take the demo home....Time passed and got the actual game and the entrances were finally near full length, had to look up how to unlock wrestlers unfortunately but all in all awesome step up to next gen awesome game. Be cool if you played through smackdown 2 in 2023 for the first time and done a review.
Smackdown 2 is definitely coming this year😉 can't wait to finally experience it for the first time!🤟🏻
Lol forgot about that lane undertaker entrance!! Classic!!!
Man I remember being like 7 in 2002 and renting this at a blockbuster lol I went and got my dad to buy it for me that weekend this game got me into wrestling like really into it I had older raw games like raw is war or whatever for ps1 and I had wcw backstage assault but yeah this game was it it was the one for me I was obsessed after just bring it
Still remember playing this at Sears and being blown away by everything. This game made me want to trade in my n64
Oof, bad choice.
I legit have to tell you, I found you through your first Smackdown review and subbed. You're fantastic and extremely entertaining. I actually hated this game on release but your retrospective has made me wanna revisit it. Keep up the fantastic work with this amazing channel.
Aw thanks! I really appreciate that!
@@VanHellingtonStudios you inspire me to work on my content with my channel. Question, I made a UA-cam short on Dying Light 2, it's a minute long video. Can you let me know if you'd find my personality engaging for videos? Sorry random question but I need an honest opinion. It's titled "Fix this In Dying Light 2 Techland."
@@AquaDemyse Sure, why wouldn't it be? As long as you're passionate and somewhat knowledgable, people will appreciate that. Personally, I try and have videofootage of the things I'm talking about. But then again, I never do shorts so I have no idea what to do with those haha.
But your voice is fine, too. You should make Todd Howard parodies, you kinda resemble him haha Could be a nice little niche, especially with Starfield coming out soon :P

Something about the atmosphere and lighting in this game looked so beautiful.
I know, right? It's hard to put a finger on it. There's something esthetically pleasing about the whole thing.
ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS CONTINUE BUILDING ON THESES CONCEPTS! The amount of freedom is unmatched.

I appreciate the appreciation👊🏻
It's true! Triple H always had the best hair in every game lmao!
I still play the game to this day. The last of the Attitude era. And i bought a special memory card to unlock everything
Haha me too! I had to buy one, since it took almost halve of the memoryspace
@@VanHellingtonStudioslol yeah it's pretty much all I have on that memory card
It was one of the last 'WWF' games I believe. I think WrestleMania X8 on the GameCube in 2002 was the very last.

This was there in SmackDown 2 also. You really need to play it otherwise you will keep making mistakes like it. But overall great video. 👍👍👍👍
Oh sh*d really? Well it's still new to me dammit! But thanks for telling me😊
Bad days when the intro of the game is better than the game itself 😂
Well, with an intro like that, how could it be😅
The royal rumble and liver jack match are criminally underrated in this game. Fast paced and great with friends
Liver jack?

I loved when a game could be a game. When seeing sweat on AI wasn't the goal and gameplay was the focus.
And they absolutely nailed the gameplay👌🏻
Smackdown VS Raw 2005 - 2007 was the craziest if it was in my top 10 of wrestling games it would be number 7
Not a bad spot at all
Eddie part made me laugh
Happy you noticed 😁
Like the simple shit on how clean the graphics and setup was of the menu of this fn game . That whole purple aesthetic! Take us backkkkk! Coming home from school to try to play wrestling games like Just Bring it with a bunch of friends….. Nothing like it….. I love the attires in this game of my favorite wrestler and tag team of all time Jeff and Matt Hardy and Lita. MY first time watching as a kid watching that Undertaker and Kane double entrance I was fucking tripping out! TRIPPING out BRO!!!.. It was and is still so 🔥🔥🔥🔥 no pun
“Attention attention caution caution”
I know, right? That sh*t will never get old!
Really well done video man.
I almost forgot how out of date the game felt when it came out. WWE had been using the new Smackdown set with the fist & the new presentation/font for 3 months already.
Smackdown irl was entering ruthless aggression, while this game still had attitude era vibes.
Yeah I think remaking everything for the new gen took its toll on the developmentscheduling
Smackdown 2 was my first in this franchise (I eventually got the first game later), I played SD2 every day for the entire year, then this came out...but I didn't get a PS2 until my 16th Birthday in 2002 and this was the game I got with it. Super hyped to play it...but...I just didn't care for it. I loved the bump in graphics, full entrances and all that, but something always felt off about it. I eventually went back to SD2, and literally played that until Shut Your Mouth came out. SYM was the real change I was looking for...that and by then I had played SD2 for 2 years straight, I was in need of a new game lol.
The storymode in JBI was severely lacking in terms of longevity, for sure. SYM more than fixed that
SMACKDOWN HERES COME THE PAIN WAS THE BEST
Many would agree with you👍🏻
Something cool and funny, if you play as Stone Cold in season mode, you can get a goofy cutscene with him and Kurt Angle wearing cowboy hats, if you make bad choices, you can end up in a 3 on 1 handicap match tho. Also, if you have a tables match and a wrestler interferes on your behalf and he slams your opponent through the table, he ends up in the winning cutscene with you. Lol
Haha wow, I never knew that! The Stone Cold one might be a fun upload. I'll look into it, thanks!
I subbed cause you told me to elbow drop it. So I did!
Ooooooooohhh yeeeeaaaahhhhh
Still got all the smackdown games
Keep em close, keep em safe
That kindergarten cop reference lol
How could I not🤷🏻♂️
I really enjoyed the Story season mode I still used to this day are from that game
I was thinking about like Smackdown to just bring it was alright but it needs a lot more yeah almost video you saw and the images of characters yeah they weren't using that
How you don't have more subs is beyond me.
Haha I just started 3 months ago, I'm baffled and humbled by the subs I've already got. Appreciate it man👊🏻
The modern games lack something that these old games had. It's hard to pinpoint.
Fun and arcadey vibe, do whatever you want. Thats missing nowadays. As is music during matches, miss that too
Caut-caut-cauton... Attention-tention-tention
Noooooooooooooooooooooo
Just Bring it was the last wrestling game I purchased for like a decade. It just wasn't the same as the last 2
06:20 To this day they use a line for ALL titles so far!
If you do a match in which there is a count out, outside of the ring fighting. As the ref counts 5 the cpu starts to go back into the ring or tries to whip you back into the ring and follows up. They never act normal above the 5 count. From SD1 to WWE2K22. :)
Copied code I guess haha. or AI is very difficult to program. In 2K's case I doubt they even tried haha
@VanHellingtonStudios The AI was coded in SD1, and both that and 2 had a quickstep mechanic. If you tried to grapple the AI while it was in "get in ring" mode, it would quickstep to dodge you.
They removed quicksteps in this game but didn't make the AI reverse you instead.
@@KopperNeoman didn't know that!
I remember trying to beat Mr mcmahon on season mode in he'll in cell match at wrestlemania it was so hard
Don't cross the boss!
We never got full wrestlemania big stage on any off wwe games for closing was 2k14
Caution ⚠️..............Attention ⚠️
Make it stop!
Before I subbed, UA-cam said "Caution" multiple times lol jk.
Hahaha
I didn’t realize there was so many SmackDown games 0:25
All the way up to 2014, then 2K took over
It’s pretty sad that the opening video package looks better than the 2k series of games… Jesus I’ve NEVER seen those demos (0:45) wow.
For me i think Htcp is the goat (which was only missing ingame commentary)...then followed by sym then smackdown vs raw 2004/5 then just bring it. Errr i do think this game is nice it was at (my opinion) released at the best era of wwe/wwf during the invasion arc. Umm the only thing i wish was this game to have the smackdown 2 season mode in it..then this would have been the best out of the first three games- sd1, sd2 and this. I love the older games because i want a video game n not a simulation...i think these first wrestling games until smackdown vs raw 2004 which had ingame commentary + background music during matches made these games exciting to play. Unlike todays wwe games i honestly can fall asleep while playing cuz simulation sometimes make games boring.
I'm happy you liked it too! Many usually dismiss this one. I think it holds up pretty well mechanically, and the roster was great! Visually and audibly not really, but I still love it.
People knock on this game now. But when this first came out, it was the best wrestling game on the market! Miles above Raw on Xbox.
Raw2 was pretty good though, different, but good
@@VanHellingtonStudios Raw 2 had so much going for it but the gameplay. It always felt like you were wrestling on the moon.
@@VideoGameXDomain I know exactly what you mean! You get used to it though, and it does offer a lot
In Smackdown 2 you could also throw opponents out of the ring, and the story mode was even better. The game would take you through every month of the year, each month having its own list of matches and rivalries, culminating in a ppv that was unique to each month. You had Royal Rumble in January, WrestleMania in March, SummerSlam in, uhh, august? (can't remember) Painus in Uranus in November or whatever, and so on and so forth... AND! In story mode you could actually SPECTATE BOTS FIGHTING EACH OTHER.
Seriously man, before you go any further with Smackdown games, or wrestling games in general, you HAVE to play Smackdown 2. Do not leave this blank spot in your wrestling games nostalgia marathon.
I have it planned for a future video for a new series!
@@VanHellingtonStudios Hell yeah! I can already smell what you are cooking.
I hope you will enjoy the game! Btw, your channel is absolutely amazing
@@TonyMcCrea appreciate it dude👊🏻
It's my favourite wrestling game ever after i played it on the start of 2010's. You have 2 finishers, more suplexes, better graphics, same freedom as Know Your Role, better animations.
Only what sucks is Story Mode, i don't get it why it's so short, PS1 Smackdowns had much better Season mode. I own this game now, but when game loads Triple H, the console always freeze, it's also won't let me play Story Mode because his model loaded in the intro.
Oof, that's a shame, and a weird glitch too
11:27 do you know when opponent is Max damaged or damaged enough is because the body is spread bald eagle style instead of just laying flat that’s how are used it all back in the days I’m an old head😅
That's very true, however minor moves did cause them to lay of the mat normally, so it was hard to see when a sub would be succesful. I did love that after enough damage they got laid out the way they did. Was a cool touch
@@VanHellingtonStudios thank you for all your work and content

@@VanHellingtonStudios Damn, my PS2 refused to play the disc :'( I tried Shut Your Mouth instead and that game had a bizarre glitch where all of the wrestlers were invisible and only their shadows could be seen. It looked pretty freaky haha!

You really can't compare graphics of this game to those others as each Smackdown game has about less than a year of development while those other games has 2+ years.
True, but a year later SYM came out and looked incredible. New hardware is always a challenge
I think this is the only game where you could reverse a reversal (if you don't count being able to reverse a reversed punch). As Ive been playing this recently as I basically started with SYM but I did play this years ago before I had a PS2 in a store with my dad, who beat me lol. But even though im playing it many years later, its still a really decent game.
SYM lets you reverse the same reversals. It also upgraded the Finisher Nosell mechanic from SD2 and this into full-on finisher reversals. (Unlike HCTP onwards, it still costs a pip in SYM)
@@KopperNeoman Oh damn I never knew, but first time playing this I did it 😂😂😂 but some of the reverse animations ain't in SYM or I never saw them lol
I've never played Just Bring It, Shut Your Mouth, or Here Comes The Pain. I was perfectly happy playing Smackdown 2, No Mercy, and Raw 2. So I didn't have much interest in getting a PS2 until Smackdown vs. Raw 2008
2008 is arguably the worst one😅 loved raw2 btw, underrated for sure👌🏻

⚠️CAUTION!⚠️
AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH
Great video and a good overview of the game. The Trish Stratus jokes fall a little flat though, in 2023. It's fun to look back on what was normalised in different times but it's uncomfortable watching that stuff being perpetuated today. Anyway, know it's just a bit of humour but something to consider hopefully. Looking forward to the next one
I do try to look at it when it was released and how I experienced it. And I don't think I did anything that could be considered offensive or insensitive by showing my affection for someone over 20 years ago🤷🏻♂️ but I appreciate you telling me, I'll keep it in mind👍🏻
@@VanHellingtonStudios Thanks for your considerate reply man, glad it was taken in good faith. I can see now what you mean about trying to communicate your experience of the game at the time of original release and that's totally fair!
It's always difficult with this kind of historical stuff balancing respect for the contemporaneous experience and the modern critical eye, especially when things like racism or misogyny come into it. I love how it's handled on WrestlingBios, I'm sure you know his channel but might be worth looking at for that specifically if you're considering your approach going forward.
Whatever you do, glad you didn't just write me off or give a defensive/no response, so I know you'll do good, you've got a good heart I can see!
Thanks again for the fantastic video and best of look going forwards!
The problem isn't with the Trish jokes. Modern standards are the problem. It's a shame such a bad faith comment got such a good faith response. Crybullies should be regular bullied.
@JohnHillEU Thank you for your recommendation of WrestlingBios. I now know that they're gutless cowards who would have turned in Anne Frank. Goid day, woke.
I wonder if the hate for Michael Cole started from this game, I kid. But it does make you think. And how about the fact that taz commentated his own matches, a trend that would follow for a decade +. I still remember having JBL on commentary while beating the shit out of him.😂 only in video games.
Haha yeah should've put that in the video! If it's available in future games I'll be sure to put them in! And your first point: It might've started the dislike for Cole for me haha would explain it though
Slobber Knocker was in Smackdown 2 though. It wasn't new in this game.
Yeah somebody told me, it was new to me though, SD2 is the only one in the series that I've yet to play😅 but thanks for rectifying me👍🏻
