First off, I love your videos and your workmanship, I wish you were near Duluth, MN!
I have a very small commercial building that only has 11.5' x 15.5' interior with 9' tall walls. I only want the walls sprayed with 2" of closed cell. The walls are all 12" thick cinder blocks and I have metal 2x4 studs 2' on center that are 1" away from the block. I have gotten 5 bids and none of them will get back to me after giving a bid. They all said "We have a minimum charge of $2000." I'm thinking that's a bit high but I finally said "O.K., go ahead, I just want to get it done and I'll pay cash." to the last bidder. And now they too will not get back to me. It must be too small of a job is my guess. My building has extremely easy access right off the main highway, plenty of parking and power. I don't get it.
I'm now thinking about just buying two 650 froth paks and doing it myself. I would very much like your input/thoughts on my situation.
Keep up the great work and videos. Thanks in advance! :)

That's tough. I do all size of jobs big and small. The smaller ones can be good money makers because you are in and out fast with few issues.
      DYI foam can be dangerous.
Be patient and persistent and you'll find someone to do it. Squeaky wheels get the grease...

It is a structural void form floor - uses cardboard void forms. So we asked for the builder to install OSB to stiffen the walking surface.

I went low, hired some Mexicans that retrofitted a used Sara Lee truck with spray foam barrels. Paid a THIRD to a FOURTH of the price of the “good” contractors quotes and am very happy. Granted, I knew the installation would be less professional and I did have to do a bit of my own cleanup, but it was in a crawl space and I literally saved more than $5k. Half the “good” contractors wouldn’t even take the job.

Hey Mike. I was hoping you could help me out. I have a new all metal pole building. 30x50x12. It has a 6" eave on it that is open. I had a company spray closed cell spray foam 2" on all the walls and ceiling. Problem is they left a 4" gap at the eave. They said they have had problems with the metal on the eves buckling when spray foamed. I suggested putting some batt in there or cardboard etc to cover the opening then completing the 2" of spray foam to make the sealed envelope. They only want to use batt insulation in the eves. Now this is just a home work shop, but I'd like your opinion on this please. Located in upper MI and it will be heated all the time.

    • @SprayJones

I know this isn't the correct video to ask this question, but I've watched hours of your videos and haven't found an answer to my question. If wanting to spray foam in a steel building that already has the roll out (white plastic backed) insulation installed what prep needs to be done to prepare for foam?
Is there a product that needs to be applied over the plastic backed insulation or does it just need to be removed?

    • @SprayJones

Would spray foam be a good option for a panelized wall system. Where the panels (say 8ft x 8 ft 2 x 6's at 24" o.c. ), were constructed and sprayed in a warehouse. Then assembled on site. What are your thoughts?

    • @autoandhomediy5974
      @autoandhomediy5974 10 місяців тому +1

I think that is an excellent option for those types of homes. In any type of house, spray foam is the best of the best option.
It also adds structural integrity to the building locks everythjng together.
It still would not will not help at the connection point of each wall section. Unless the foam is able to be sprayed over the connection points. Im talking about closed cell foam.
Open cell foam would not help with rigidity.
Ive been spraying spray foam for 10 years. Mostly closed. A few open. Wisconsin.
In my eyes, closed cell foam is the best insualtion option you can choose.

@@autoandhomediy5974 thank you for your perspective. I want to have the r value without having to frame out the walls 12 inches. I was considering Zip R sheathing or equal... a continuous insulation on the exterior would help the thermal bridging. But my price point is starting to speed to.. too expensive for the average person. That's my target audience. Reduce electricity and heating/cooling for the life of the home saves families the most. And a solar array that pays the family or net metering. We should be building all houses with these considerations at this point.

I paid $18k for a 1200sq/ft A-frame cabin closed cell foam. . Exterior walls and roof deck, non-vented. 3" roof deck and "2 in walls. It's new construction and everything is open. According to pricing I've seen online that would be considered very high-end pricing. What do you think? I love your videos, thanks so much for all your expertise.

I have to ask, is this as insane of a price as it sounds like to me? Because I feel like I should literally be doing it myself for that price.

An established Maryland company proposed spraying my attic (~2800 sqft. only the underside of roof, no removal of fiber) with 3" closed-cell for $31,299. I am getting another estimate from another company, but I find the first companies proposal to be absurdly disrespectful. Is there any justification for this price in a suburb of Washington DC?

I rented an insulation vacuum and did the blown-in removal and disposal myself, saving $4995 (extremely hard work). I masked up and checked the coverage during the 3 days to be sure.

  • @turboflush

I got three quotes and they were massively different. I figured the top just didnt want to bother with my buisness.
I have checked companies recent work before. Should have with this.
My worry is that they send me to a fake customer. Or some other way of fooling me. Idk.
All good points. Space angle. How much prep. Anything that adds time or uncomfortable. Doing a open wall is allot different than doing a low pitched attic retrofit.

So how much is a fair wage for a spray foam installer, and what do you look for years of experience, attitude, knowledge, mechanical knowledge, spray foam patter etc? In the process of two people one with 8 years experience but very slow , lazy but dependable and another 2 years and very harworker and knowledge all.

As far as wage... that is between you and them. Want to lose them easy? Want to see them advance? Are you generous? What does it cost to train them for 2 years? What mistakes can the poor ones make that'll cost you? What is a good installer worth to keep?
I have said for 17 years we are very specialized, but in a narrow field.

This justification for non-transparent and inequitable pricing is disgusting… the more they can say “it depends on complexity”, the higher the price they can get away with charging. I see right through you! Maybe you should consider charging by the hour then to make pricing more fair to all types of clients.
