Joe is so mellow and humble, and those points of his character adds to his greatness. I have never seen in any of his videos the slightest display of snobbis arrogance that turns people off. He is a really easy going gentle type dude it appears. It still just blows me away to hear him talk, and then to hear him sing. If you never heard of him before and talked with him, you would never guess that he has the blues voice within him like he does. He can sing the blues as well as play it. GREAT
@jayjaygibbs if he's in the key of "G" then the mode will be the "G" Aeolian mode also known as the natural harmonic minor scale. Played as a pentatonic instead of diatonic, its basic the exact same shape as the minor pentatonic box 1. The difference is that its a major sound as opposed to the minor sound and the position of the root notes are different - so most licks played there will end on a different position to position to those played on the blues/minor scale box 1.
SO.. basically what he was trying to teach guys was to use pentatonic sequences of four...and get really really good at it...and when he really shreds the pents he uses sequences of sixes sometimes at mind blowing speeds. An example is the lick he plays at 0:11, he plays the sequence horizontal though. Check it out its a great thing to add to your playing and you will hear him use it ALL the time. By the way if you cant figure it out slow the video down to 1/4 speed and observe =]
+Juan Enrique Ortiz Pentatonic scales don't have modes. Modes are when you have actual tonality change of a scale in a certain key. for example the solo of Breath by Pink Floyd is in E minor but the Chord progressions are in the Dorian mode.
Amazing, neither the picking or the fingering is the same from slow to fast... there is the point why so few people are able to learn this stuff in lightningspeed.... :)
@tonictaster just keep practicing when i use to learn scale runs like these i would practice them real slow and then over time build it up, trust me youll be able to play this run like joe in a couple of weeks depnding on how much you practice
Hey, if you can play it up to Joe's speed using only alternate picking, then all the power to you, but that's not how Joe plays it. If you try it the way I described, it will be easier and make more sense once you get ripping fast with it. Before casting a shadow of doubt on the technique, you should at least try it first.
He sure knows how to handle any electric guitar, and he seems to have a very delicate sense for sound. Joe Bonamassa is going for the top thats for sure :) Would be nice to have that riff tabbed out though .. anyone ?
Thank you for posting the Joe Bonamassa Guitar Lessons ! So is Guitar Edge Magazine the same corporation as Hal Leonard Publishing and GuitarInstructorcom ?
I'm a big fan of Joe, but I must say this is the first video he tries to give a slow lesson:P Normally he gives a lesson that's just too fast to follow. Great vid man, thanx for the post!
I have uploaded a transcription of the lick Joe plays for this, interestingly he plays it different each time, and the time he plays it slowly is the most different. Some times he starts with an upstroke, sometimes with a downstroke, and he occasionally plays two notes on adjacent strings with upstrokes or downstrokes, a version of economy picking, although when you slow it down it looks more like individual pick strokes than a sweep! See the transcription I have done at: www.dropbox.com/s/g452m20snhniq7c/Joe%20Bonamassa%20Firebird%20lesson.gpx?dl=0
We both know that good technique is all about min movement, and the repetition of down and upstrokes in the way he plays this lick dont aid either the sound or the ease of playing. Now don't get me wrong, Joe is clearly the master here while I am the student, I am just trying to understand why he is doing it, and why he is not alternating. Can you see that alternate picking on this lick would be the obvious choice? I guess I must be missing something are you there Joe?
Not quite. What he's doing is 5 note descending licks that end on a downstroke and then he just rakes with another downstroke to a higher string for the start of the new 5 note group. He doesn't do any economy picking using upstrokes. Consecutive downstrokes on the same string would be too laborious and borders on impossible at those high speeds. This is a classic Eric Johnson run which EJ uses the exact same technique for.
i do have an open mind. I'm acknowledging that others may like firebirds but i'm just saying i don't. There's a difference between having an open mind and not being able to say what you think without being shot down. Also, i like the tone of firebirds (i think they sound fantastic); my opinion is not "shitty" just because i don't like the look of them.
For me, it looked like he's strictly using alternate picking on those runs, even when he's playing slow. I mean, watch eric johnsons right hand at those licks, it looks just more like economy picking than this.
Cause they would rather stick with the mainstream guitars and not go any further because they have no sense of adventure and crap taste, but Les Paul's are still the best.
sure, I can see what he is doing, but it doesn't make any sence to me - I play it all alternate and it feels fine - I wonder why he employes the economy picking when it doesn't aid minimum movement
I know its your opinion but it's a shitty one. Firebirds are not ugly their awesome you need to have more of an open mind about guitars and stuff. Pretty much everyone just has a Stratocaster, Les Paul and mabey a Sg as a favourite. It's all ways the same, don't get me wrong though their great guitars too but Firebirds are also awesome. I just don't understand how many people don't like Firebirds.
This is a testament to you, not him. Kudos. He added nothing more than one time played slow. What about his description demonstrated a knack for teaching?
"This is actually pretty simple. Let me demonstrate." *melts your face off*

Joe is the best blues guitarist playing today!
So intelligent and humble. 🔥🦁☮️
great guy great guitar all round great vid
thanks Joe for the vid.
genius! i love him!!!

@LSGoCards7 he's not using any modes actually. when he says "mode", really mean position.
Joe's social skills are overwhelming.
Your hands are beautifully dexterous, just to watch is enthralling. You say simple...but
Did he say 'Jesus how fast was that' @1:39 !?? :O

I love how Joe calls different shapes of the same scale different "modes"
+Alex Padilla lol! but he is right...
+Juan Enrique Ortiz Pentatonic scales don't have modes. Modes are when you have actual tonality change of a scale in a certain key. for example the solo of Breath by Pink Floyd is in E minor but the Chord progressions are in the Dorian mode.
Thank you! I stand corrected!
Joe will still run circle around technical geeks. Learn all the theory of music and keep on sucking.
frostedhead He copped most of his shit off EJ bro.
THE BEST
Amazing, neither the picking or the fingering is the same from slow to fast... there is the point why so few people are able to learn this stuff in lightningspeed.... :)
1:38 He is like: "Dude, i'm impressed with myself, i just run out of words!"
@tonictaster just keep practicing when i use to learn scale runs like these i would practice them real slow and then over time build it up, trust me youll be able to play this run like joe in a couple of weeks depnding on how much you practice
no doubt
It's a mix of economy and alternate picking. If you watch his pick hand when he plays it slow, you'll figure it out.

"He is a great player" - bit of an understatement? haha
0:09 1:21 1:50
0:44 1:25. 3:25. 3:33
agree with that comment 100%
Thank you for posting the Joe Bonamassa Guitar Lessons !

the boss
For sure, but I play it all alternate and it's all good - I can emphasise notes at will, as he is within this lick.
Any thoughts about his picking pattern on the lick he teaches? I
I have uploaded a transcription of the lick Joe plays for this, interestingly he plays it different each time, and the time he plays it slowly is the most different. Jonathan Soye I also noticed, at least the second time he plays it, he does a pull off on the high e string, which drastically changes the picking.
Jonathan Soye I think this natural when you play it slow, many times the fast mechanics starts when you actually play fast.
Alvin Samson yep probably he don't realise what he is doing at fast speed .
oh cool man whens the last time you talked to him?
This took me an hour too figure out lol =D I'm not new to guitar playing I just have never learned the names of the things i play
the licks he plays when he slows down is different than the lick at top speed, slow down the top speed lick and u will see
Hey I love the white suits :)
thats why he said you can add in the outher notes...
What mode is Joe using here?
By definition, It does aid in minimizing movement, which is why it's called ECONOMY picking.
Joe talks more about Clapton when on an interview than he does of himself
Seems like every time he goes to get a diet coke he gets a guitar haha
on watching it again I can see that it's not even economy picking, it's a number of downstrokes on the same string
where is the rest of joe?
i would never use economy picking the way the markets are going.
@curlywannabe it's an epi

Well you should like the look of them.
Is he economy picking that lick?
Any tab?
can someone please tab this? plzzz
All I can hear is Eric Johnson...
1. Draw two large circles. 2. Draw the rest of the fucking owl.
0:17
IF joe bonamassa tells you that he is going to show you a simple lick, prepare for a crazy impossible pentatonic shred
In Joes next lesson he teaches us how to draw an owl:
bonamassa is god
CanOfPeas very god?
There is only one God: David Gilmour!
He is getting his tone trough that epi amp lol
@dmbodeen Besides Derek Trucks... ;)
No i don't. I like Les Pauls, SGs, Stratocasters etc. I've just never liked Firebirds. Your opinion is just as valid as mine.
2:05 So here is your main G`s
It looks like he alternate picks that one lick when played fast. When we slow it down he economy picks it.. odd.
The muttered part right before was "I know people are going 'jesus! how fast was that?!'", after that he stuttered "I", as in the pronoun. :)
@dmbodeen no no no....best GUITARIST playing today, you just got to take away the blues part..although he is that too XD
He looks like Jason Segal
wait what just happened
I dread to think what he buys when he gets a beer
For me, it looked like he's strictly using alternate picking on those runs, even when he's playing slow.
I mean, watch eric johnsons right hand at those licks, it looks just more like economy picking than this.
I get the feeling that maybe he's actually a Pepsi guy...
LOL.. he is a cool dude.
You don't want to play exactly like him though, take some and add it to your style! or alot..
I don't know if its just me but it seems like that guitar has got a lot of fret buzz.
OK! I THINK i need a diet Coke! and btw i need a firebird too!
@sportsportsport but does anyone care?
Try watching the video at 2x the speed. Click the little cog button at the bottom right. It's hilarious - Joe sounds like such a nerd!
I know, even lindsay hates them but why?
Cause they would rather stick with the mainstream guitars and not go any further because they have no sense of adventure and crap taste, but Les Paul's are still the best.
Not So Easy To Catch ! Joe Plays Very Fast...
Oh well, your loss.
John Mayer is good but joe is true.
sure, I can see what he is doing, but it doesn't make any sence to me - I play it all alternate and it feels fine - I wonder why he employes the economy picking when it doesn't aid minimum movement

fair play joe, loosing so much weight!
You dont need to speak when you can play like that
brilliant guitarist/man ugly guitar!
Great player. Horrible teacher.
This is a testament to you, not him. Kudos. He added nothing more than one time played slow. What about his description demonstrated a knack for teaching?
Congratulations. Sounds like you don't need a teacher.
He has admitted as much.
worste intro/outro "song"
Fucking awesome guitar, you have a shit taste in classic guitars mate.
Another lick that rips off eric johnson. cynical I know.. but truth.
I certainly don't. I'm sick of caring about his copy cat career.
