I am amazed at how Joe has grown into his own over the past several years. And after seeing this demo, I see that he is not letting the fact that he in one of the best on the planet go to his head.. Joe, you are the man!!
This Guy is such a decent person. Most players don't like to let their tone secrets out. You can tell he is in it purely for HIS love of music and tone. I don't particularly gravitate to his style of playing, but have nothing but admiration for his abilities and especially his humble attitude. You know he is grateful despite his success, rare in an artist of his standing. Rock on Joe!
We think the sad fact is that Joe would sound like Joe on just about any rig unfortunately! Though getting his high end gear would certainly put you in the same ballpark, the rest is a long old journey though :)
One of the bigger things I think that people don't talk as much about is the speakers he uses. Those EV's are going to be worlds different than the typical Celestions you'll find in many setups. Much less aggressive and colored in many ways, some of the "purity" you're hearing could be from those.
quite heavy, 010 or 011.. but he does a wrap-around at the bridge..to reduce the angle, it also helps for less breaks. Also he has nylon bridge saddles for the G-B-E strings, to warmen the tone.
Absolutely love JB. Can't wait to see him with Black Country Communion. He can make his guitar sound like just about anyone he wants, but when he speaks, he's a dead ringer for Fozzy Bear!! He is, in my humble opinion just about the best player around at the moment and would put him on stage withanyone. Check out JB at the Royal Albert Hall. K
Every time I see a Joe Bonamassa video the purity of the tone just blows me away. Can you actually get anywhere near that without the exact same amp setup he uses? The Van Weelden and Category 5 are only available 'on application' so god knows how much they cost -the Two Rock is about three grand so I would guess you're looking at fifteen grands worth of Amp at least. Just a smidgen beyond my budget :)
To keep his favourite settings in place at all times. When you're on a darkish stage and, by accident, you step on one off the pots of a pedal, it's very hard to find the right setting again while playing. That's the thought behind the tape.
@kiaranjay ive seen him live and to be honest i think he just tends to bring out the EJ licks when he is noodling around by himself. I think that probably around the time that this video was taken he had probably been watching an EJ licks DVD or something, but in a live situation he has a very distinct playing style that is unique in its own right.
@kiaranjay dude just cuz hes doing pentatonic runs.. he has a different thing then ej... much different.. yes more bluesy.. but the way he attacks is so different
You will never sound like Joe Bonamassa because you don't play like Joe Bonamassa. Don't be discouraged by that, because you should discover your own signature sound. After all, if you want to make it in music, sounding exactly like some famous guitar player isn't going to get you anywhere :)
@guitarthroat Well said, I couldn't agree with you more! I love it how everyone thinks if they have play a Hendrix guitar through a Van Halen amp, using a Zak Wilde or Slash wah wah for example, they're gonna sound just like them! lol It's all bollocks! All they're saying is I spent thousands of pounds more to sound just like me! lol
I am not envious to Joe, hes a great Guitar player and like him very much ! But I dont know if you believe in God , karma etc or not, I just think that every musician --specially guitarists, should be lucky enough to make living with music if they truly love playing so much....You just cannot go for a job and make great music at the sam time !
I know too many guitar players that always have everything maxed out??? the secret is to play with those volume and tone knobs on your guitar!! maybe have some oil in paper tone caps installed? whatever makes you happy :) a guitar can be like a car, just cruise with it man, you don't need to go full throttle all the time :)
poor Joe how many of these rig run downs do they expect you to do in 1 year same gear you are a good sport ---hey Joe were you goin with that gold top in your hand
@cstfakeaccount We have a minor oddity here, in that both orient and orientate come from the same French verb, orienter, but were introduced at different times, the shorter one in the eighteenth century and the longer in the middle of the nineteenth. There’s been a quiet war going on between the two of them ever since. I tend to use oriented and orientated pretty indiscriminately myself, choosing the shorter one when it seems to fit the flow of the sentence. Get a life no-one cares. Except me.
And there is people on youtube that say his Epiphone edition is better than the Gibson! QUESTION!! so why does he use the Gibson?? DUH, because of the headstock? give me a break. ANSWER: The Gibson is the better guitar unless your deaf
I think like most great guitarists and especially great blues players,Joe's tone comes from his hands, fingers.I love his sound!

kinda sounds like kermit at the beginning....love the guy btw

wow at 1:10 i could've sworn that he was going to play cliffs of dover but then he turned it into one of his amazing blues licks haha
Cat 5 + Fuzzface + LP = Badass.
Nice dude. Thanks.
Great Bluesman & he really knows how to get the most out of the equipment he has. Very humble player.
quite heavy, 010 or 011.. but he does a wrap-around at the bridge..to reduce the angle, it also helps for less breaks. Also he has nylon bridge saddles for the G-B-E strings, to warmen the tone.
I've just become aware of Joe in the last couple of years. He sure has changed his look. I've never heard him speak before or seen him without shades
@APortlyNinja it also stops him kicking the dials and changing the sound of the pedal when he presses them
His tone really reminds me of Eric Johnson.
such sick tone
we love Joe, what an great player and a likeable guy
This video is very old, and was already put on youtube, but now THIS video is in HD. So we can get a better look, great.
Which Amp Set up Sounds Better And Sweat'3r, The Euro Or 'Merican?

@JamesCornelisonMusic its just to keep the knobs from moving
He should change his name to Eric Bonamassa, because sounds like two Erics I know, Johnson and Clapton.
"Aah" and "You know" is the two signature words of Joe! Lol!
To keep his favourite settings in place at all times. When you're on a darkish stage and, by accident, you step on one off the pots of a pedal, it's very hard to find the right setting again while playing. That's the thought behind the tape.

"which I like"
Come to Calgary Alberta Canada Joe...............Please!

whats with the tape over his tube screamer settings?!?!
@GibsonGuitarist666 with an amp switcher?
@BIRDINTHEHOUZE I know, i really want to see his pedal settings though
Slow down the video to 1/4 speed if you want to learn how to play like him..new youtube feature!!

I can't imagine an artist knowing any more about his craft. I hope he has as much success in his love and personal life.
hes got good picking technique
Joe would sound like E.Johnson with a les paul on any rig.
which i like
@guitarthroat Well said, I couldn't agree with you more! Ironically, he sounded most like EJ when he played through the superlead. Sounds great, though!
@gibsonguitars22 LOL! I was just about to post exactly the same comment but I saw urs and thumbed it up! :)
The tape is over the knobs of the pedals is there purely to avoid settings being knocked by a lead being dragged over them or in transit etc.....
@kiaranjay YES, but his playing also sounds the same.
Really nice playing, Joe.
he said "Aah" 42 times lol
he could plug into a cardboard box and still sounds amazing

@kiaranjay yeah, but with a Les Paul! Lol!
When he plays those really fast licks, I cant tell if he's picking all the notes???
Great tour, but I tuned in to find out what PHASE SHIFTER he uses. Oh, well...
Bonamassa is God!!!
@JamesCornelisonMusic he's hot tape over every knob of every pedal, maybe he doesn't want his settings to be seen xD
1:10 cliffs of dover phahahahaha!
I know you can do a lot with unaffordable amps and settings. But every note he plays....................... Man how does he do that ?
:D!
poor Joe how many of these rig run downs do they expect you to do in 1 year same gear you are a good sport ---hey Joe were you goin with that gold top in your hand
@kiaranjay oriented. "orientated" is not a word.
He does sound like Kermit. Thanks
I swear this sounds so much like Eric Johnson, just a bit more blues orientated
only the phrasing sounds like johnson. his tone actually doesnt really sound like his. closer to clapton or kossoff.
Was habt ihr immer mit Eric Johnson. Joe Bonamassa ist Joe Bonamassa. Punkt.
jump to 3:50 and slow down to .25 time ahahah
Because he plays like the Three Kings and Gary Moore..
Joe sounds like Joe.
As people have said before..... ERIC JOHNSON!!!.... much...

why does he sound like kermit the frog
Fender Deluxe Reverb RI will get you VERY close. A nice EQ and compressor in front will take you the rest of the way.
Kermit the frog
kermit the frog...lol
I hate joe bonamassa because he makes me realise how rubbish i am on guitar
he does awesome things on the riffs and them he simply start talking normally, like it was it nothing what he just have done
@kiaranjay ye i fkin ripped off,, its such a shame,,
first seen:D
