Finishing the phrase and breathing great tip. I have seen Joe Bonamassa 3 times at Red Rocks, CO. Best concerts I have been to (meet and greet this year with ES-355 on order) Saw BB King several times, while his style was great because of the timing/breathing and coming back just perfectly. While I try to emulate several legends like Joe, I cant rip up and down the frets like Joe, I can practice timing and breathing my phrases etc. Thanks Joe, see you in August 19 God willing as it will be my 70th birthday.
I hear 100 great players at once listening to this master. What a job this guy has done with his craft. Most cats his age have gone a whole different route in music which makes me respect him that much more keeping alive a genre that may be fading way replaced by tatoos, rage and just plain ugly.
Joe likes the mid range, so a general setting would be to put the treble and bass about 5, and the middle about 7 or 8. Although a lot of the sound will depend on what guitar and amp you have. What gear do you have? It will help to know :)
Ok Joe ....who are you and what music is there that I must know and don't know it's you! You have a really great sound. So where might I find your bateau all, Joe? Thanks Marc
i love les pauls and no its not because they're expensive and many own them. but i simply find them the most versatile and warm guitar and to me has the best tone. and bonamassa's les paul gold top (signature series) is probably my favourite, but for some reason im finding the tone on that les paul really 'unclear'. perhaps its the amp?
even if you only do the pentatonic, it has 5 positions that are take you all the way on the fretboard. So, with only those 5 positions, you can play all over the board.
@soaring138 That's an ol' Roy Buchanan trick. He'd cut holes in his speakers with razor blades and point his amp away from the crowd so he could crank it as loud as possible (more tube tone :D). Roy also used his tone and volume knob CONSTANTLY (seriously, I don't think anyone used it more, ever). I'm sure Joe is a big Roy fan, Jeff Beck is for sure! Check out Roy's "Hey Joe" at Austin City Limits. Similarly, go out and buy a copy of Joe Bonamassa Live At Albert Hall. Amazing.
That's like saying Stevie Ray Vaughan spent a little to much time learning Albert King licks or that Eric Clapton spent a little to much time learning B.B. and Freddie King Licks. Joe and Eric J. are both very good, I am glad that he had a good player to influence him.
@PilotDoofy totally depends on the style. His tone is perfect for the band, beyond perfect. Why do you think the "brown" sound is such a legendary term?
@nathanmcdable the drive on the deville is really terrible for chords, but if u'r playing single note leads, it has its own charm. not that great, but useful for the stuff we listen here.
i was wondering if ne1 could tell me how he sets up his amps ? im just starting guitar and im not very good at figuring out the lows and highs ina sound be great if some1 could help me out thanx
I know all the positions for the pentatonic scale and can use them fairly well.. but i want to add some more flavour to my playing.. i've fallen into a rut with the pentatonic/blues
Because it's all about cutting corners. If manufacturers can get away with using lesser quality parts and charge more money, they do it. So, now instead of high quality capacitors in a $2,000 guitar, we get little ceramic things.
ok, this probably isn't the right place to ask this.. but what/how is he playing.. theres gotta be some framework (scales) to build your lead over, but he is literally all over that fretboard..
I get what everyone is saying. I didn't listen to him for awhile because of the note diareahh. the one knock from most people is that he overplays. I think I'd like listening to him more if he backed off some of those fast runs. I like watching the dialogue though about tone and amps and stuff.
point to ponder..what if your pots are shit and don't work well except in one spot? tone and volume pots suck for the most part anymore. that's why alot of people get frustrated and don't want to use them like joe does.
Well, he has to sound like SOMETHING now, doesn't he ? He does not SING like Bert and Ernie. *sigh* . . . ' . . wuhl, I think'e oughta sound like Elvis . . ' pffffff-ttt.
compare Jmi's career of 4 years to that of Joe's and look at what you have... you didn't think that comment out. Joe is great, but saying he play's better than Jimi is ignorant. it's not about the fast Pentatonic run.
Better than Jimi? He wouldn’t even say that about himself. Not even close. I can’t name one Joe Bonamassa song but I can name almost all of Hendrix’s. Hendrix was a much funkier, more powerful and infinitely creative player in ways Joe could never be. Hendrix has just about 4 yrs to do that he did. Joes been around for decades. Take joes best 4 years and it’s even a conversation. I love joe don’t get wrong. But Jimi was an innovator. Joe could never play machine gun like Jimi did. Joe is faster and plays a lot of styles of years of practice. Jimi Hendrix was a creative genius and a force of nature we haven’t seen before or since and never will see again.
+Guitar Man My musical ear works just fine. Whilst he has buckets of technical ability, his playing lacks soul, emotion and passion. There is a difference. Next !!!
+David Zobel No. My view is based on a valid observation and is my opinion. Before you respond with venom and bile, I will not be slammed for expressing my views, simply because they differ to the mainstream or yours and as seems to be the latest craze these days. Sick off it. Next !!!
+CountryHouseGent I wouldn't say no feeling, you can't claim to understand how another "feels" what they're playing. Although I do find his playing very boring and predictable, too much scale running in 4's or 5's.
Joe is cool because it seems like anyone he talks to is a friend.
I wish...tehehe. love Joe can't help it.

With his chops I bet Joe could release a killer thrash album. I'd like to hear that lol!
the more and more i listen to this guy I hear a darker version of Eric Jonson. Now that's just my opinion. Love them both :)
Joe Bonamassa is so interesting man, love listening to him talk about anything... Slash also has that quality. Two great inspirers and role models...
Joe is So inspiring to me!
this guy is REALLY great..
Joe, love all that you are about -- always have and always will. You got it right, timing is everything
I hear 100 great players at once listening to this master. What a job this guy has done with his craft. Most cats his age have gone a whole different route in music which makes me respect him that much more keeping alive a genre that may be fading way replaced by tatoos, rage and just plain ugly.
ilove love love his waistcoat !!! its beautiful !!
oh yeah he has so many guitars in his collection! friiging amazing.
"sometimes I think I have undiagnosed ADD- Maybe I could win a contest for holding my breath underwater!" Great tone, Great guy.
"Or could could do that BB King thing" *shreds*
+David Molyneux Yeah lol true, but I think he was referring to the tone. :)
YOU ARE REAL AND A GOOD GUITARPLAYER MISTER JOE BONAMASSA YOU ALLWAY.S AMAZING ME THANK YOU FOR THE BEST GUITAR MUSIC
Great Tone' s. .. ☺😊😉/👍👌👋
This guy......Stunning.
this has been my main guitar for a month and a half, lol my main guitar ive played my whole life lol
Joe likes the mid range, so a general setting would be to put the treble and bass about 5, and the middle about 7 or 8. Although a lot of the sound will depend on what guitar and amp you have. What gear do you have? It will help to know :)
That's why the LP is the best configured instrument for tonal variety
i like all the little slide ups he does
I play a Gibson es 339 on a deville with a tube screamer and it sounds awesome. The deville is a great amp!
He's the new Gary Moore , to my ear, took the Clapton , Page, Beck, thing up a level.
I like his playing with Rock Candy Funk Party the most.
Joe's so fluent. Every note is 'there'. He's different to most players.
Killer hidden Jeff Beck phrases in there! very cool the Paint job is sublime as well...
Ok Joe ....who are you and what music is there that I must know and don't know it's you! You have a really great sound. So where might I find your bateau all, Joe? Thanks Marc
Haha, google ? Never heard of Joe Bonamassa ? New to the guitar world ?
fingers of steel bending like that on 12s! What a player!
i love les pauls and no its not because they're expensive and many own them. but i simply find them the most versatile and warm guitar and to me has the best tone. and bonamassa's les paul gold top (signature series) is probably my favourite, but for some reason im finding the tone on that les paul really 'unclear'. perhaps its the amp?
even if you only do the pentatonic, it has 5 positions that are take you all the way on the fretboard. So, with only those 5 positions, you can play all over the board.
and then when you add the blue notes and mix in some modes like Dorian..its limitless.
he is so good
I just like the independent tone an vol for each PUP, its much better than a strat for me...
@soaring138 That's an ol' Roy Buchanan trick. He'd cut holes in his speakers with razor blades and point his amp away from the crowd so he could crank it as loud as possible (more tube tone :D). I WANT THAT GUITAR.....

kpaul5990 i keep all tone at 5, no idea what joe does
the key is to connect the positions horizontally
Skrew the Ad! Turns me to another vid immediately
@TheGrantCave eric is actually a big influence for joe like he said in the past...i like of thinking joe's style as a bluesier eric johnson
@Maxweckl right
Wow that looks simple
@RuecianG Alexi laiho guitar?
I know all the positions for the pentatonic scale and can use them fairly well.. but i want to add some more flavour to my playing.. i've fallen into a rut with the pentatonic/blues
PIck up the sound from the backside ??? Cool !!
i haven't heard him do that gliss/clapton thing before as much as he does in this vid...hmmm, my jury is out! love him though.
He really is a cool cat.
No he's not he's actually kinda douche in the industry..
+crailtap2002 I don't know the guy personally, I was really just referring to his playing.
+dadude7 fuck you dude. I do actually and I may know more than you think
+crailtap2002 You've got fuck all ya banger. That's why you're on the internet slagging off Joe B. Tough guy behind a keyboard.
plz upload better quality
he sounds like bert and ernie from sesamie street..but is a awsome guitarist
hey look it's that guy you see every time you go into GC
Joe is such a nerd, but he's awesome :-)
only since the early 80's, its a head scratcher why they dont make them like they used to
yeah! check out my video about the pentatonic scale in all positions!
Micha Schellhaas oh man, you know the other 7 notes? Crazy
what string gauge does he use?
Because it's all about cutting corners. If manufacturers can get away with using lesser quality parts and charge more money, they do it. So, now instead of high quality capacitors in a $2,000 guitar, we get little ceramic things.
ok, this probably isn't the right place to ask this.. but what/how is he playing.. theres gotta be some framework (scales) to build your lead over, but he is literally all over that fretboard..
There was actually a guy named John Henry in the room?
@guitar789 eric johnson but bluesier. i like it!
I wonder what the story is behind the Gibson logo on his guitars, It's oddly placed.
Joe Bonamassa = best dressed guitarist
one thing jumps to mind watching his playing . . . no feeling.
I think his playing is awesome. So many influences evident but he blends them seemlessly to make a style all his own.
HE'S JUST DEMOING BRO RELAX.
Looooookin SHARP !!!!!
I get what everyone is saying. I didn't listen to him for awhile because of the note diareahh. the one knock from most people is that he overplays. I think I'd like listening to him more if he backed off some of those fast runs. I like watching the dialogue though about tone and amps and stuff.
That would be true, if there was no Fender stratocaster. This is coming from a lifetime LP player. ;)
@nathan2rock hahahahaha :DDDD i love to listen to his voice :DD
@nathan2rock Yeah, he does sound a bit funny. But I couldn't care less even if he looked like Bert (or Ernie). He's just plain awesome!
That is a rather big statement...
anyone got a tab for the first lick he played?
5:00 sounds like Far Beyond The Sun
Those slides get old after a while.
The one volume no tone knob control comes from the EVH generation of guitar players.
do the BB King thing and then starts to shred. LOL I don't think BB ever shredded or was even able too?
So what? That doesnt diminish Joe's abilities.
point to ponder..what if your pots are shit and don't work well except in one spot? tone and volume pots suck for the most part anymore. that's why alot of people get frustrated and don't want to use them like joe does.
so basically you had to slow yourself down because you're too good? I wish I had that problem
check out the video, I put some flavour to the scales ;-)
1 knob is all you need
tbh i couldn,t see any difference between the no breath and breath phrasing.
What exactly is the point of this video?
Cool ass guitar shit.
why does there have to be a point. Joe rips, that the point!
:S i thought somebody killed John Henry
it's funny that, Joe only has ONE lick he uses to play fast stuff.
@djangolad hit the volume button. then look at funny cat pictures for 30 seconds
A 'breather',,,,,, where was the breather???
he sounds a little like kermit the frog. or maybe its just my ears
It has has actually been proven that he is not.
boost the mids a little bit, and play your ass off!
11-52 Ernie balls
Tommy Emanuel is good at what he does but he cannot hold a candle to Joe's ability or tone knowledge!
They’re totally different types of players lol
it's not a contest. BOTH are virtuoso players
.11-.52 ernieball
@sngncwby Calm down guy.
Well, he has to sound like SOMETHING now, doesn't he ? He does not SING like Bert and Ernie. *sigh* . . . ' . . wuhl, I think'e oughta sound like Elvis . . ' pffffff-ttt.
looks like someone spent a little too much time learning E Johnson licks instead of developing his own style and voice. F;ame away
and yet, I bet you are still in your basement and Joe has toured the world over and over to sold out shows.
I won't deny the guy is a good player. But he over thinks everything and strangles the blues. It is sterile white boy blues.
Bojo Mojo How is this a race thing again ? ~.~
lord, shut up... I'll take BB King any day...
Bojo Mojo youre stupid
+Bojo Mojo When Eric Clapton will take the stage with you and give you props it makes people like you look the fool you must truly be.
I put Clapton in the same school as this guy. White boy blues. SRV, now there was a real bluesman...
But he sings like WIllie Dixon and plays better than Jimi

that sound is just the pits. sounded terrible.
let's hear your sound?
@@sixslinger9951 I have to apologise. I love Joe Bonnamasa and have no idea why this was posted! It sounded amazing.
@@fieldfullofthistles it all good. I didn't realize you posted this 10 years ago. Cheers.

Then your ears are fucked, chump.
