Gotta love Joe, humble guy, always looks up to people he could play circles around, and of course, his mastery of the guitar is something else. You can't dislike this guy.

Fantastic touch, Joe has it all in the fingers. His vibrato, pick attack, dampening, accents all mimic that human voice quality that the guitar naturally doesn't give. Saw him live last year & he really tears that Les Paul a new hole every night, this generations Clapton for sure.
Joe is far from arrogant. Hes anything but that. He does know his guitars and his way around the fretboard. Hes just a confidant picker. Very nice guy had the chance to meet him in April
He's a little arrogant. But no more so than anyone else who has *mastered* something. Honestly, doing something is one thing; being really good at something is another thing; but I contend that if you spend the several hours per day for *decades* on end that's required to literally MASTER something, you've earned a small amount of arrogance when discussing that thing.

Let me play his guitar while he adjusted the bridge on mine to show me something we were talking about... That was 20-30 minutes after I met him- didn't know me from Adam and wouldn't likely even recognize me if I met him again. I had access before a show because a family member worked for a sponsor. I had brought my home made Strat for him to sign, and he just acted like we were old friends. Definitely NOT arrogant.
Arrogance and confidence are two different things. Confident? Absolutely! He knows he's good. How could he not? He's got millions of fans and is highly respected by some of the greatest all time guitarists as a peer. But he's as humble as can be about it and loves to talk about guitars and music. God bless him, he's a genuinely good fellow.

This is why guys like Joe, EVH, Hendrix, Clapton, EJ, SRV and a lot of other classic rock guys are so great, because they know the guitar so well and can get all kinds of great sounds out of it with minimal effects. They understand phrasing and timing so well and naturally, that those guitars actually talk and sing when they play. Doesn't matter whether it's blistering fast leads or slow solos, just sounds great because it's all from the heart out the fingertips. Groans that words cannot express. The average person listening is moved when they play and inspired! Joe is legendary!

In my humble opinion had Joe been out in the 60's 70's or 80's, he definitely would have compared to any one of them at the time. Just because he's younger and wasn't around at the time doesn't mean he can't be compared to them. Actually guitar players of today have an advantage because they can learn from the earlier greats due to advances in learning resources. More out there today to learn from than just using your ears while putting the needle back on an old record, or pressing rewind and play over and over again. Granted the early guys had to figure all that without any help, so they get extra props for that. Joe remains an ambassador for guitar going into the future. He is thoroughly dedicated to it, and has the chops to prove it.
@@aguitarrman5867 He wouldn't have been known. He's not a good songwriter. Songwriting was and is the gateway to get people to hear your guitar playing. It's why people know Jack White but not anyone from Dream theater. Dream theater guitar nerds are way better technically but no one gives a shit bc technical prowess alone isn't fun to listen to.

He took lessons from Danny Gatton among others. He's had some lessons from the best. Now he's one of the best.
Just one time i put one of his songs in slow mo just to see, and the vibrato he does with the fingers is unique. One of the best blues players in my opinion
The older JB and I both get, the more his playing grows on me! Nice to see and hear him explaining all of the tricks most of us have forgotten about - plugging straight in to an amp, and working those things called knobs and switches. He is getting better with age. Thanks Joe!
I can never understand why people get such satisfaction in tearing someone down. Success doesn't happen by accident, it's often a combination of skill, technique, determination and luck, with one of those sometimes being factored in more but not always. This can be said for any career. If I'm getting something of value from this video, it's great, if not not s lot of lost time either.
Knowing the right person or people can be beneficial. Who hasn't gotten a job thru knowing someone?
But having Danny Gatton as your "mentor" at age 13 might be considered a slight advantage to some.

Absolutely mind blowing how it sounds really cool and yet he makes it look so easy. JB is clearly a wickedly good guitarist and by all accounts a lovely guy.
I'm from St. Louis which is one of the main places where blues really took off originally and everyone plays these type of solos around here. I'm a metal player myself, but I feel like adding some blues sound into a metal solo could be really cool so why not learn. Thanks for the video!

From years of listening to, seeing in concert, reading about and watching Bonamassa... He has remained amazingly humble and down to earth throughout his entire career, even though the dude has A LOT to be proud of/ to boast about with a career absolutely filled with astounding achievements not to mention being recognized early on as being in amount the greatest guitarists.

he is one of the most humble guitar players. he isn't full of himself he just comes off that way.
All the haters need to understand he was a child guitar player who admittedly learned by listening to records--I don't think he can read music but I could be wrong. He's the quintessential "ear" player who just so happens to have an immense arsenal of memorized licks/solos/rhythm bits he's learned over the past zilion years he's been playing. So criticizing him for not being a good teacher is like criticizing LeBron for not being a great coach.

Who cares about the haters. They are just frustrated nobodies in their Mom's basement. Anyone who has carved out a career for themselves playing the guitar has my respect whether I like their playing or not.
I guess a zillion years of playing is plenty of time to iron out the kinks.
He may or may not know how to read sheet music (which doesn't matter to 99% of guitarists and certainly has no bearing on teaching ability), but from the way he talks, I certainly don't think he's the quintessential "ear" player. He talks a ton about notes, flats, sharps, modes, scales, etc... I definitely get the impression that he's got a real solid grasp on music theory-- something the vast majority of "ear" players know little or nothing about.
Danny Gatton one of the world's awesome best unknown guitar player who was Joe Bonamassa teacher and good friend I believe so Joe was taught bye an incredible guitar player and he was a very quick learner a whiz kid you at the age of 9 past his father who is also a guitar player in a band

For all that knock him. His clarity is excellent. You rarely hear him play a bum note.

Matthew Bradley I personally don't like his stuff much. But he's a great player. You can find videos on here of interviews that he plays in. They show how articulate he is.
***** I agree. I don't think he's a great songwriter and even though he's great at what he does, he doesn't seem to be able to venture outside of that genre. People that say he's bad are kidding themselves though. Just watch some of his interview/lesson videos. He's such a competent player.

a lot of this stuff i have had to learn on my own over years of playing and random stumbling upon, plus just hard work and practice. some stuff you find online, or melodic blues lines with those 2 notes harmonies are really fun to explore. these videos are really fun to watch even if he doesn't have that burst. the burst would make just much more enthralling. thanks for sharing the licks. stuff to brush up on, with a couple new things. but i find confidence in knowing that i discovered many of these things on my own. i use them in different ways than joe does and thats why music is important. a musician learns personality with an instrument. to speak as many call it. some make the instrument speak. that is why you can tell a truly special instrument from a regular one, and that is why you can tell who some one is no matter what they are playing.

I don't play the guitar, I can't even read music but this guy seems to make me want pick up a guitar and learn to play it. Unfortunately, I have neither the talent or patience to learn but I am more than satisfied to hear this chap play all bloody day! Everyday!
Guitar is fun. I'm a terrible guitarist but even I can make it sound glorious at times. And like you, I find Joe to be a tremendous source of encouragement.
When i play the first bending lick i prefer to bend the B down instead of up, sounds the same. Very cool sounding harmony bend, love it.
i really like his style - i learn so many little things watching him. He's so far beyond my level so even though i fall short i still pick up cool things i wouldn't get just hammering out the basic blues boxes.

Hammers and pulls? Joe is so good he doesn't need them. Check out his right hand...he's picking 99% of the notes. Really amazing considering his speed and fluidity.
agree.....accentuates evry note clearer. there is a time and place for hammers and pulls though but with his style of musicality , picked notes really do sound appropriate and punchy....
His speed relies on his picking technique which is a lot like Eric Johnson or Eric Gales. Check out Troy Grady and pickslanting. If you choose notes for the left hand based on the right hand approach( 2 or 3 notes per string) then the long flowing runs become very natural feeling and they all flow together using the ‘block’ approach to the fretboard. Good eye noticing that right hand.
Yeah, that's what's always fascinated me about him as well. When he does those runs, he picks almost every single note. I have to hammer and pull because I become more and more inaccurate as I try to build speed. Lol! He blows my mind with his capabilities. It's nice see someone else noticing that on here.

One point about the cascading lick segment I think he doesnt mention is always returning to the root and mostly start on the root (although not essential) this will really help things sound good

Agreed. Room acoustics makes a big difference in these instrument lesson/demo UA-cam videos. Difference between a well recorded video and one where we're hearing too much of the room (e.g. www.sax.co.uk instrument demos).
First time I noticed Joe was this video. Then I heard him sing blues-rock. Then I saw his music videos. AMAZING!! :)

I practice , practice , practice and it still seems so far away ! Playing since you were four makes a big difference!!! What a wonderful guitarist. And a super nice human being with much humility I might add !!! He sets a great example for all. It was a real honor to meet this great person and guitarist at one of his concerts!
What you practice and how you practice it is what matters.
Joe, you are the man. Great lesson. For beginners, a great start is to (on paper) map out the entire fret board with whatever key you want, and practice, practice and practice.

Actually was only a mistake in terms of not being what he apparently meant to do. The note he went to accidentally was entirely appropriate and not wrong in any way.
I had the same thing with ‘don’t let perfection be the enemy of the good’. It’s particularly relevant to me personally at the moment - karma’s way of reminding me not to overthink things and just get on with it!

First start with a nice Les Paul. then a large,open room with wood floors. No carpets,rugs,curtains and keep furniture and any knick knacks to the bare minimum. Finally a good tube amp. Congrats. That right there will get you 80% there. the rest is practice.

I have been a huge fan of JB for the past 11 years. Discovered him on Belly up for blues podcast. Seen him in concert 2ce. Have all of his DVDs, and the first one has a documentary about him. This guy was a child prodigy, opened up for BB King when he was just 8 years old. Can't believe that he doesn't have as much fame as he should.

Everyone says that he isn't teaching or explaining these riffs, but personally i think if you're at the point of playing in which you're ready to play these figures, then you would probably be proficient enough to follow along by watching his hands. At least that's what I did.
Also I want to add, I don't mean you should be able to look at him and instantly know what he's playing, but you can get an idea based on his hands, then figure it out exactly by ear
Wow don't break your arm patting yourself on the back ! You must be one of those Prodigy's . My great grandfather taught me how to play the blues when I was 5 years old . I think everyone needs or has been taught to play at some point . I saw an interview and Joe said his father taught him to play when he was very young and by the time he was 12 his father couldn't keep up . I'm 45 and I will never know everything and Joe will be the first to admit the same thing . I own a Les Paul that Joe sold at his garage sale many years ago ! Also Who Cut Your Hair Man ?

There's no patting on the back or prodigy stuff, or whatever. It's just using your eyes and ears. If you can play what Joe is playing skill wise, you can probably figure it out with your eyes and ears

One of the aspects you have to like about Joe's playing is his voicings are always very tasty. You can tell he thinks things out. This is a man who likes what he does!

I love this guy......great tips. I do, however, disagree with the tuning thing. Yes, A 440 has it's thing ....like he says - nice and bright. Pretty tone ....the notes pop ....yadda yadda yadda. BUT, If you haven't tried tuning down (the whole guitar) to Eb ....you MUST do it, if nothing else, just for fun. The guitar behaves differently and all those Hendrix/ SRV licks suddenly sound and vibe like they should.
A440 is the frequency those notes and tuneings are found. Eb standard is also A440 lol
joe diehl I totally agree with you. My SRV strat resonates more and comes alive in E flat than in E. So i leave it in E flat. And since I float my bridge, it easy on the springs and vibrato...
les pauls sound better in standard tuning. Strats sound better 1/2 step down. Eb

G major is the relative major of E minor, that may be the source of your confusion. Play some licks in G major (E minor) and G minor, see if that helps
