Amazing video as usual! I have to admit, I like how it sounds a lot better with the 6L6 tubes. More bass and low end growl, thicker mids, and I always use a boost with my recto and this amp to my ears(based off various videos) sounds even better than a Recto. Got my Maxon St9 pro+ a month ago. It really pushed my Mesa Stiletto into new territory. Was using a TS10 which still sounds great and used to have an OD808 which also was good but the ST9 really turns it into a more saturated metal tone. Love it.
The EL34 is clipping earlier, which makes makes it sound more saturated and a little sludgier at those gain levels. They are a little more scooped too. I feel like the 6L6s are tighter, so now I'm confused why they went with EL34.
Interesting! I like the high end and more scooped sound of the 6L6, but much prefer the tighter low end and directness of the EL34. I wonder if it's easier to pull back the mids and boost the highs in an EL34 setup, or easier to just tame the low end on the 6L6? Hmmm
Ola, this was a great comparison! The differences you/we hear is to a great deal caused by this: 6L6 got less transconductance or "gain" compared to EL34. It changes how the poweramp, including the Phase Inverter, responds. The PI is hit with the same signal level whether you use 6L6 or EL34, but 6L6 will yield less output power. This also decrease the Negative FeedBack signal that is fed back from the output transformer to the PI, since it's proportional to output power. Less NFB will make for slightly loose bass and not as "tight" sound. The Presence circuit will also change it's behaviour a bit.
I really listened closely with my best set of headphones and I could hear a very subtle difference. There wasn't a change in the EQ in any way but there the 6l6's were a bit less compressed than the el34's. I kind of liked the subtle flavor of the 6l6's as I prefer a little bit more of that higher-headroom openness going on there but again it's still a very subtle increase in headroom.
I hear little to no difference, though I have played with both sets of tubes (6L6's on 3 different Mesas, EL-34s on a Marshall JVM) and to me it was more about the string attack and how the tone "felt" while playing. The 6L6s were more open and clearer, and the EL-34s were more compressed and longer sustaining. Neither was really better than the other, it's just a matter of taste. Though I would believe if you went with 6L6's and used the Tube Screamer (or similar boost) it should arguably make it more compressed like EL-34s. Through Bose headphones... EL34's are missing a frequency that the 6L6's are producing (somewhere in the mid range)...so the 6L6 sound a bit fuller...but, in a live band setting most likely will not be noticed. Now being 100 vs 50 watt.... I do know there maybe a drop in volume from 6L6'S ON THE 50.
Help me like this amp, I've played 4 of them, owned both of them at a time and just don't get it, they are SO thin, almost no bass, and the gain is kind of barely enough to get into metal territory, it's more a hard-rock amp, but then it records well, again, because it lacks so much low end. But in a room, every other amp I own shits all over this thing, made the Badlander seem like it was defective. The Badlander needs the bass and gain to go to 12 to get me there, but as is, it's just "meh", especially for leads where there isn't a ton of gain to get nice sustain. It's crazy, it's the thinnest and lowest gain Mesa I've literally ever played, but since YT videos don't really convey much under 200hz, it again, records well, but in person, it just has no punch at all.

You're exactly correct. It's weird how we use terms like "rubbery" and "cold" and "woodsy" to describe sounds, but that really is exactly what it sounds like. It has a rubbery texture to the sound somehow. The 6l6 for me is a clear winner, it's got a more aggressive, smoother, cleaner and crisper sound somehow. The EL34 is like this "bendy", or rubbery/tubby type sound to it.
Maybe it's just me, Ola's mic'd sounds have sounded like asshole since like 2018 or so. He tries too hard to make a "room" sound which just sounds like a muffled farting mess. Would sound better with a single SM57. His using dark mics imo gives a god awful sound.

El34's with the boost for the win! Sounds like old school Suffocation but with better guitar production ;)
I hear a difference even in my rev G. I play more power section and less pre amp tho. Stop playing at bedroom levels and crank df out of em. If it’s too loud you’re too old... or maybe you should just go to the lumber yard and build yourself an iso booth. You know; police and stuff.
Fantastic reviews as always, the Badlander sounds tasty. Really appreciate the multi-faceted approach you take with your videos, different mics, cabs, IRs, etc. Appreciate the effort. Also, I'm amazed just how good the Solar guitar line is becoming day-by-day. Seriously considering ordering one before the holidays. I have question!!! What's with the names though? Why are they names inspired by serial numbers? Apologies if you've answered this before.
EL 34? What is this, a spanish channel? EL treinta cuatro. I think I like the square nose guy with big eyelashes best. I just can't figure out what it's staring at. 6L6
What is the point of Buying any amplifier and add a tube screamer wtf?! It is supposed to sound fucking awesome out of the box
i dont like the EL34...pretty boomy
I love you Ola! I don’t say that to all the youtubers. Lol or guys in general actually 🤣🤣🤣
You say that, because you have been drinking the whole day :D :P
@@ThyFinalPain Bwahahahaha he just cracks me up. I mean it in an inspirational type of way. You inspire me also!
@@Rooster7six :D Thanks! I like watching his clips too. And obviously Rob Barret also :)
The BOSS knobs are a real let down. Amp sounds nice.. But BITT FUGLY!
It's just a Rectifier with less options... What is new? Any change in the circuit??
6L6 makes it sound more Recto IMO. Reminds me of a Tremoverb. But the additional Cab Clone is a huge plus.
EL34s sound more “rubbery”
You're exactly correct. It's weird how we use terms like "rubbery" and "cold" and "woodsy" to describe sounds, but that really is exactly what it sounds like. It has a rubbery texture to the sound somehow. The 6l6 for me is a clear winner, it's got a more aggressive, smoother, cleaner and crisper sound somehow. The EL34 is like this "bendy", or rubbery/tubby type sound to it.
@@JoshChristiane EL34's compress more due to them being less efficient
@@cosmokramer4703 Yeah, they have less headroom for cleans too, right? I'm no tube expert. Cool stuff though.
@@JoshChristiane yeah they won't be as clean because they compress
Sounds pretty good with the IR.
The videos before sounds nasal ish.
I think its the mic Ola use
Maybe it's just me, Ola's mic'd sounds have sounded like asshole since like 2018 or so. He tries too hard to make a "room" sound which just sounds like a muffled farting mess. Would sound better with a single SM57. His using dark mics imo gives a god awful sound.
Tone was better without the boost. Probably need less drive and mid enhance on the pedal and less gain on the amp!
I would love that candy apple red with a evertune be awesome 👌 👏 👍 🎸 love em all tho
Can we get an HM2 in front? Just to see what happens...🤔 lmfao
6l6 sounded warmer and nicer. yeah nicer metal yeah right :)
