Man, i can't believe how long i wrote off Recs. Without a boost, they're not fun at all... but nearly ANY boost in front, and its one of the greatest tones of all time!
Felt the same. My first tube amp was a basic three channel Triple Rectifier. Wasn’t metal enough for me. Now I know how to boost with a OD pedal, the Dual Rectifier Multi Watt I currently own is my main amp.
I agree but not really. Let me explain. We associate the midrange on the rev d with being scooped but i dont think it is. Its just different. In a good way for me.
the "best" rectifier is the good old underrated roadster for me, still very affordable here in germany and a lot more options and features..loaded with el34, killer! cheers 🎸🎸
Thank you for the shoutout to the Beijing square foil getter 12AX7a. Not enough is mentioned about this and its importance in factory voicing of amps. I discovered this because my bone stock Mark IIC+ and 92 5150 had these tubes and was shocked how it woke up my 2000 3 Channel Triple and my Tremoverb head. I have over 50 NOS Beijing 12AX7A and 6N4-J now I've been hoarding. While my experiments over the years trying to find a good Sylvania STR 415 replacement, Im with the Tung Sol 7581A as my clear-cut choice. Grreat stuff, man. I just can't get away from the Tremoverb with this setup.
It definitely sounds to me like the MultiWatt could benefit from a bump UP in the Presence to get more evened up with the Rev D. Cool vid, Fluff- thanks for sharing.
I love the high gain saturation of the mesa rectifiers. It just adds a special something, especially if you’re using multiple amps with different tones. The rectifier was my first love, and I still have my two channel tri rec. Just straight up awesome amps. Thanks for the comparison, Fluff!
I've tried a bunch of rectifiers and with a little tweaking, they all sound pretty much the same; except the rectifier solo, that one sounds like crap. I totally agree with Fluf though, when he says the rectifier can do anything you want. It truely is an all terrain vehicle.
Thx fluff for this awesome comparison and for your precious work on the rectifier website… it would be nice to see (and hear) a Badlander Vs RevD video… both with same tubes obviously!
I like how the multiwatt sounds more raw and balanced, the 2-channel sounds more eighties, but I don't like its treble. The orange channel of multiwatt is definitely something new, it sounds good but it is very different
I own a few Rev F's, Rev G's, the road king V1, the recording recto preamp and some multi-watts and love them all. I use mostly the chinese tubes in them with some with JJ's and they all can sound pretty close to one another. Cool video comparison. \m/
Been watching your videos for a while but I just now had the realization to check out Dragged Under. So glad I did. One of my favorite bands I’ve come across in a while
I love Rectifiers also. I currently own a 4 channel Dual rectifier roadster and a multiwatt that was made in Jan of 2022. Mesa is just one of the best imo, I really want to get an older Mark IV now and a JP2C. Cool comparison, I need to get me an older Rev E Dual Rectifier
Hey Fluff , since you're somewhat of a Dual Rec expert (I'd say) ... what if you did a video where you try to make a Boss Katana head sound as close as possible to a Dual Rec. Since in the software there's 2 different Dual Rec models? 🤔
I’ve got a 2001 single rectifier which I love. I found that JJ 6l6’s sound better for me. Takes some time to dial in a decent tone but overall worth it.
I have one of those black face 2ch Fs around here somewhere. Never recorded with it, but just playing in the room I kind of liked the way the orange channel gain sounded with the Mid all the way up, the Treble all the way down (9 o'clock max) and Presence up to bring bite back. Anybody else do that?
Going back to your OG-OGeee "Dual Rectifier High Gain Shootout!" I feel like the loathed 3-channel solo head sounds closer to the 2 channel than the Multi-Watt.
Whats your opinion on STL Tones Josh Middleton Duel Rec plug in? I think its the most insane, accurate capture of any plugin. Its actually not a capture, they rebuilt the circuits component by component which is a first of its kind I believe....things sounds amazing.
I did a trade with a guy. Got a Mesa Dual Rectifier Multi Watt in the trade. Played with it 2 times. Far too many knobs and switches to be useful. Included it in a trade in deal today for a brand new Friedman BE 100 Deluxe and Freidman 4x12 cab.
I would like the Rev D for recording metal rhythm guitars, but the multi watt could probably sit in a mix better, especially live. They both have enough of a differential eq tone stack to serve a purpose 😁
Please do a comparison with a stock modern made multi watt Dual Rec and a Mark VII… I’ve always wondered if a Mark can do the dual Rec sound convincingly. I’m between buying one of those models. Love the flexibility of the Mark but want that dual rec growl on tap too.
Love my Rev F w different boosts and speaker combos. Can make it really pissed off sounding!! The Multiwatt gets me close but definitely missing that angry older Mesa growl.
You know what would be funzies...., that Triple Rev F!!!!! Please make a video please!!!!! That thing must be insaaaaane!!!!! I've heard that when they're cranked you can hear the lamentation of the women!!!
@@Starch1b2c3d4a the sizzle is useless in a full mix, i low pass filter out everything above 8k anyways, cause the sizzle clashes with hi hats and cymbals.
While I prefer the overall core sound of the Rev D, looks like the multiwatt has way more flexibility and you could potentially match it to be exactly like the Rev D. I do like flexibility and variety so I'm going for the multi watt.
The multi watt seems to be more fitted and tighter on that Red Channel whereas the Rev D seems to have a smashing warmer and brighter tones for m ore kind of Marshall flavour"ish" tones
rev D on the orange channel was amazing and worth every cent of its price. BUT it would be cool to hear both of the orange channels tracked together. difference in mids would make a huge tone.
I would like to see your take on a early roadking vs an old recto. Since you can blend EL34s and 6L6s in the roadking, maybe you can match it either more ? :)
Arguably, I feel the mids in the Multi-Watt may be more useable both in a live band situation and in a recording. Still sounds brutal, but less “buried”…
Hey Fluff, I have a multi watt recto from 2015 that I bought locally. I love this amp but I would love to know how to mod the effects loop to a true series loop. Can you help with this. I am running a fortin Zuul in the loop and I still hear signal bleed. Please help!
Does anyone know if the multi watts have a clean effects loop with no tone suck even at low volumes? I played a roadster that is serial and still has some tone fx loop issues.
It would be sweet to compare an old school Dual Racktifier rev g with the 2 channel recs. There is a difference according to my friend Mike Hasty from Walls of Jericho. He said when he visited the Mesa factory he was told it has lot to do with a more compact design cause it has shorter signal paths. He taught me to have presence on 0 and just use the treble so it cuts out fizz they’re known for.
Hey Brother is it true the modern multiwatt is voiced like an F ? Im in Cali wanting to compare my 2 channel non multiwatt dual rect to one of these C and F versions
Sitting here doing this the multi might sound better. More marshall thwack to it. But throw them dudes in a mix and some slower chord work especially with palm muting and the rev ds midrange will give that walking in fresh snow crunch to the mix.
I have to admit Fluff, I was a two channel hater forever. When the three channels came out, I had a Triple Rec 3 channel. All of my buddies had dual/triple 2 channels (not sure of rev version). I "needed" a third channel, so I went with it and all of my buddies were poor examples of two channels for a healthy comparison like this. Hearing one tuned up with good tubes/etc, its clear that I was way wrong on the dirty channel, and the older Revs ripped compared to my three channel. I didn't have a multi watt version though.
Really dig the Multi-Watt. I currently have no Mesa amps after having a mark V and a 3 channel triple rectifier. Now I’m completely torn between a mark series and a rectifier any advice is greatly appreciated!
I'm lucky enough to both V90w and the triple. depends what sound you want. if you want full heavy rythem go triple if you want awesome lead and tight single note rythem go mark v
Would anyone have some advice for me how to set up my 150watt triple recto like Fluff just showed? Talking red channel / Modern or Vintage etc….knob settings etc

Yeah, unboosted I'd rather listen to my ex-wife. Boosted it's a pretty awesome 5150iii LOL
It would be really interesting to hear from a Mesa engineer about what they were aiming for with each revision.
The early rev's were pretty much a literal clone of the Soldano SLO100
Would love to see a comparison with the Badlander and the Multi-watt.
The rev d just sounds more scooped on the mids. Gotta say I like the multi watt.
Agreed. Even when he dropped the mids on the multi, they still cut through. Multi on orange is substantially darker.
