    Oh man. This is gold.
    First, I like the pure no BS of the RevF. Dry, grinding and dynamic. Very tight but no djent kitty mid quacking. Just metal. All metal.
    The Roadking is more flexible but not as dry. I love how saturated vintage mode gets though. It has the recto DNA but not a copy of the RevF. Very cool.
    Glad you talk about gain structure and lows and how all that effects the end tone. I could go on and on about gain structure, how simply copying an EQ curve will not work when trying to make two different amps sound alike. It really requires a knowledge of the character of gain and how adding and removing freqs pre-gain changes the sound. It's great science for sure.
    I'd probably graba a RoadKing just because they're more available. In sim land I'm not the biggest recto fan. My ultimate goal when mixing is the sound, which means I avoid the Recto sims for some reason. But I love playing through them. Both sim and real life. There' something about the control of distortion when playing through a good recto sim. Strum gently and things are almost rock land. Try and gut the guitar via its strings and everything is beyond heavy. Can feel the thump of the amp in my chest which just eggs me on more to try and write something truly evil.
    More of this kinda thing please. It's instructional and super fun. All my guitar friends agree. :)
    Cheers!

    Roadking can also sound with 4 6l6 + 2el 34. So having 6 power tubes like a triple rectifier. This guarantees a devastating sound. I honestly like the sound of Roadking better, perhaps because I have recently had a multiwatt and my ears have not been used to hearing the same sound over and over for 20 years. I find the roadking sound to be fuller with more harmonics.

    • @BillyRiffinDaTube
      @BillyRiffinDaTube Місяць тому +1

      Agreed, after I fiddled with my road king when I owned one, it sounded better than any rectifier I ever owned by a mile. My second fav is the multiwatt, then the tremoverb and roadster.

    That "Well that was fast" gave me a good laugh. I think they both sound pretty cool. I find that in general, over time Mesa amps started getting voiced darker and darker. which I think is why so many people like the earlier Mesa's cause they just have a more ballsy tone.

    • @turunturun
      @turunturun Місяць тому

      Same here 😂 he was like “they sound TOTALLY different” then twists one knob and 3 seconds later is like “well that was fast”. Probably more accurate to say something like a Top Hat Emplexador and a Road King sound totally different but a Recto and ch 3 & 4 on a Road King are more or less the same amp apart from features and voice tweaking. Either way, killer video. Never owned a Rev F myself but my RKII gets me as far as I want to go down that path. Also, ridiculously sick playing. Stealing some of those drop D riffs for myself :)

    Great video! That's exactly the differences that I could make out between my Roadster and the old Rev F Triple (apart from the volume). Many people think the Roadster/Road King sound dull, but the sweetspots of treble/presence are just in a different spot, I usually run them at noon for the Rev F and at ~2 o'clock on the Roadster to get a similar sound.
    For me, the chunky/low-mid focussed/not overly tight sound of the Road- series will always be connected to the "Train of Thought" Album by Dream Theater. It has this extremely chunky, growling but not overly aggressive rhythm sound, combined with the low tunings that JP used there.

    As a rectifier lover that video was awesome! You've got them to sound pretty close. In a mix I think I wouldn't be able to hear the difference between them. But 25min is not enough... WE NEED MORE RECTIFIER! lol maybe if you get other revisions/versions like the mini recto, multiwatt etc in the studio you can shootout. Would love to get one myself but here in Brazil they cost as much as a car.

    When you had the road king in Vintage mode, it had an Orange Rockerverb kind of vibe.
    Not as nice sounding but still a useable. I'd be turning the gain down and use that sound for some classic rock riffs, definitely a thing for me.

    As someone who's a mesa fanboy I've found that a lot of people expect and try to use the amps knobs like they would any other amp which can cause them to sound like shit. it took me a solid 7 months to learn my own rectos sweet spot and about the same for my mark v. it has to all be done by ear(like you seem to!) and not by sight like so many demos have and ruined the sound. the EQ works like a eq band pedal does instead of a more traditional type. presence knob becomes the main controller and filter for the other knobs which adds even more tricky things to getting a good tone dialed up. love you vids as always!

  • @tobins6800
    @tobins6800 2 роки тому

    Nailed it. And thank you for the quick demo of the speaker difference. Even on my phone speaker's, can hear the harmonic difference between the 2.
    For me, one of the most brutal and evil tones I have ever heard was Destruction Release from Agony. How many bands in the last 35 years have been bold enough to get near that? Not many. Really goes to show what a little imagination and stepping away from convention can do.

    First thing that crossed my mind is that roadking might actually benefit from a v30 speaker. But both can sound fucking epic. But what every video on yt fails to show is the "feel" of the Amp. You know... Some make you bash the shit out of your guitar, others just want you to be precise otherwise all sort of crap is flying out of it....thats a big deal in my book. I can kind of work on tone but that "feel" thing I either like or I don't. I was surprised a couple times with some amps that sounded great but just didn't sit well with my style of playing. Or maby I am just a picky ass guitar player. Who the fuck knows😁

    I would have loved to see the RK with ALL of the tubes going - four 6L6s and two EL34s... THAT is a wicked sound. I know that it's not totally fair, on one hand, as the Rev F can't do that, but on the other it is fair to compare one amp vs. another heads up, each with their strengths and weaknesses.

  • @lloydorsino492
    @lloydorsino492 2 роки тому

    I am glad you made this video, I used to own the rev F in 1995. I played it with my Ibanez Destroyer w/ EMG pickups. Best sounding combination for high sustain for shredding leads. I didn't have to plug any overdrive pedals since the gain & sustain in that Rev F was already easy to shred fast licks on.Real liquidy feel under my fingers. I heard Reb Beach w/ Dokken in 97 live, same amp set up Ibanez Voyager guitar w/ EMGs. IT was WICKED SOUNDING, both rhythm and lead. I had to sell my 1995 Mesa Black Diamond face so I could buy the Road King 2 back in 2014. John Petrucci recorded with the Mesa Roadking 1 on the "Train of Thought" album and toured with it for a while. That is one of the reasons why I wanted a Road king 2 really bad.I regret selling the Rev F. I totally agree that the Rev F modern gain sounds more wicked than my Road King 2. I wanted the versatility of both progressive linkage, since I was always switching between El 34 & 6L6s. The Road King 2 doesn't seen too have the sustain like my old Rev F. I usually end up using a Tube screamer or Keely red dirt O.D. for the liquid sustain gain for the RK 2. Hopefully some day I'll buy that 2. channel Rev F version. I know Ola Englund is big fan of Mesa Rectifiers. Both Tremonti & Ola Englund mentioned their love/hate relationship with rectos as well. Thanks for the tone tips on this video, I'll do some tweaking on my Road King 2 soon!! Cheers!!

      To add to that, the name shown on those recto models (SOLO HEAD) rev version meant for the 80s shredders could be a reason why that amp was meant for the mid 80s guitar solo shredders to easily play legato. That is why even Allan Holdsworth and Neal Schon owned those versions too. There are pictures of them posing with those SOLO head model recto rev. versions.

    I'm probably a minority here in that I love the 2nd channel of the 3-channel Recto set to "vintage" with tube rectification and bold setting.
    Vintage allows you to dial in the midrange while the tube rectification provides a heavier feel. That's not to say that the earlier revisions don't sound great.

    The RK sounds darker but more versatile, more EQ range. Curious for a comparison between old 2ch rectos and new multi watt rectos or badlander

    On the roadking, which channel and mode were you using? Channel 3 and channel 4 are voiced differently and also eq differently. There's a good bit of info in the manual about the differences between the two. I own the roadking 2 and couldn't be happier with it. Incredibly versatile amp. All 4 channels are totally usable just depends on what your going for.

    I demoed a Road King (probably a 1, not a 2) in a Mesa Boogie store; and decided I liked the sound better with EL34's AND 6L6's active best. I think it'd be really helpful to compare the Road King in a mix with drums and bass (maybe even a vocalist that doesn't do the demon voice the whole time), with EL34's, 6L6's and especially with both active. Otherwise, it's hard to tell how well it cuts through. Great comparison, tho. Oddly enough, it seemed the Road King with 6L6's sounded most like the Dual Rec with EL34's!

    Also, for the Road King II, try moving the tone knob on the tube screamer all the way to the right, turn the gain on the amp down by one or two, and turn the gain on the tube screamer up to 9 or 10 o'clock. Normally, I put the tone at somewhere between 1 and 3 o'clock for a 6505 or 6534+ or Soldano, or whatever have you. For a JCM 900, for an Orange amp, or for anything that tends to be overly dark and loose on the bottom, I crank the tone knob, lower the gain on the amp, and then raise the gain slightly on the OD pedal. In my experience, this helps with amps that have a flubby low end, or sound too dark, especially if you like to retain the lower frequency information in the signal like the Road King II has, and not have to turn the bass all the way down.

      You have to be careful with the tone lob.

    Honestly the Roadking is easily the best rectifier. It sounds much better than any revision in my opinion. Owning just about every version, it takes a bit to dial in the road king when you're used to the reg dual recs as they are darker and have more midrange. But once you do it's incredible and they sound better through a roadking cab as well. The reason they never got popular is because they weigh a hundred dam pounds.

    I had a friend who owned a recording studio. He kept a Road King 2 as one of his House Amps. There were a lot of guys who came in with various Rectifiers, the Reborn, Rev-G, modern 3 channel ones etc, and we were always able to dial in the Road King 2 to sound close to identical within 99%. Obviously not 100%. But if I ever got another Recto, it would be a Road King 2. Cover all my bases.

    The presence knob is a power amp section thing, no preamp. Along with resonance, they function by adding negative feedback from the output transformer into the phase inverter. They alter the treble and bass response of the power amp, I suppose you could say. By adding presence, you're reducing the negative feedback in the power amp and 'fooling' the power amp into thinking there is too little treble in the output so the treble response increases. Negative feedback is to make the power amp operate more linear, reducing it by bleeding off high or low frequencies being injected back into the phase inverter alters this :)

    • @ventproc
      @ventproc 2 роки тому

      Dual recs in modern mode don't use NFB. The presence controll is actually different (RC filter hooked up to the wiper of the treble pot) and wired in the preamp for this mode. Vintage mode has NFB and a traditional presence controll.

    Now do the Mini. It's a cool little amp that I've read a lot of people are making use of in the studio. Also, I remain in the TS hater column. There are a lot of pedals that do the job better than the awful, nasal TS thing. This past couple of weeks I've been combining a pretty raw Mark tone (or slight boost with no EQ) with a Strymon Compadre in the Treble mode (no clipping) into a Recto for a nice balanced tone between the low thump of the Mark and the bite of the treble driven Recto.
