    If your dishes are coming out dirty and you made sure that you added a rinse agent. See this one's got a rinse agent, and using the correct kind of soap. You're running your hot water first. Check the air gap to make sure that's clear-- which I've already done-- and the disposal drain line.
    And then you want to check inside the sump. So what I'm going to do is vacuum it out. But you want to be careful in there because odds are that someone breaks a glass and there's glass down there. And you can' t really see it. And that's most often the cause of this not draining properly.
    Clean this out back here. Let's do those two screws down here. And it's normal that it keeps the water in there. It keeps water in there to keep the seals wet, prevent them from drying out and cracking. So you'll see a bit of water in the bottom. And downside here is a second cover. I'll pull this out. And, again, be careful if you stick your fingers in there because a lot of times it's broken glass down in there.
    It has a little metal piece that spins. And this one seems to have some debris that's stuck to it. I'm trying to pull that off now. And that acts so it spins sort of like a garbage disposal to grind stuff up. But it's got some pieces of plastic or something down around it. So that can be part of the cause.
    Pull all that stuff off of there. I still feel quite a bit more here. Fortunately there's no glass down here. And I'm spinning the little piece of metal. It's like a little metal hook that spins around to grind up smaller food particles.
    You want to brush off most of the bigger food particles. Get rid of all this debris here. But it will grind up a tiny bit. I'll get my wet dry vac in. Here comes the noise.
    We'll actually be able to see the little metal part I was telling you about. I'll have to peek down in there better myself. There's this darn piece of plastic that's wrapped itself around this part here. Not the easiest spot to get into here. It's all clear there. Now we need to test it out, make sure the thing is cycling properly here.
    And I think I will wait to put the screws back in. Test this out here. More things for you to run your dishwasher. It's a good idea to let the hot water run for a little bit. And that way the water heats up and when you start your dishwasher it'll be filling with hot water. It does have it's own heater. But it's still a little bit better to start with hot water.
    Letting it fill up there. Getting hot now. And we'll listen to the fill cycle. We're gonna advance it a little bit. There it is. That's the fill cycle. Once we finish this fill cycle we will push it ahead to the drain cycle. Now it's gone through the fill cycle. And we'll make sure everything's-- oh yeah-- it's spraying good. The water's pretty scummy.
    Now we're ready to advance it to the drain cycle. And we want to make sure there's no water spurting out of that air gap. And make sure everything's going into our disposal. It all seems proper. This is going to work just fine.

    This video saved me a ton of money, time and pain! GE Nautilus Dishwasher was not sounding right, decided to take a look and discovered water was leaking out and onto the floor. Opened it up and saw a pool of water sitting in the bottom. Checked the instructions which were useless and almost panicked....until I decided to check UA-cam and found this site. A quick trip to HD to pickup a wet dry vac, THIS VIDEO, my 6-n-1 screwdriver, patience and 20 mins of time had everything right again.....(piece of plastic got wrapped around the food grinder blade in the sump causing the non draining of the dishwasher)....Shout to Kung Fu Maintenance!

    After watching this I decided to open my dishwasher and to my horror I found caked, slimy, disgusting looking matter inside of the filter. It looked as if it had never been cleaned. As a renter who moved in 2 months prior I feel furious. Just knowing I have ran my dishes in there and have eaten off of them makes me sick!
    Please open your dishwasher and check, it's worth it!!!!

    Some spray arms are held on by a large plastic nut that is untwisted at the base to remove. Others have a nut at the top center of the spray arm that can be removed so the assembly can be taken apart. If you are showing low flow sometimes running a empty load with a cup of white vinegar added to the water can help to break up calcium and mineral deposits that build up and lessen spray pressure.

    This saved me some money. Liquid plumber didn't work. Sure enough i had glass and metallic particles stopping motor blades from turning. This keeps the washer from running and draining. You have to get all the way in and look with a flash light. The vacuum helped too because you need to clear all of the water out to see.
    Thanks

    Very helpful! Does this dishwasher have a ‘filter’ that needs to be removed and cleaned?

  • @KungFuMaintenance
    @KungFuMaintenance  11 років тому

    Yes that can happen I have another vid "How To Make Your Dishwasher Work Better" which may help. I would check air gap and drain than try running an empty cycle with a cup of white vinegar poured into the bottom of the dishwasher to clear out any calcium and mineral deposits. Also make sure you have a rinse aid added in rinse aid dispenser. Lastly position Items in dishwasher so all items get good spray. One way to check if there is a spray issue might be to run a load with top rack items only.

    If you google the make and model of your particular dishwasher you should be a able to dig up a diagram that shows how the assembly comes apart and is held together. Some are held on by a large plastic nut that is untwisted at the base to remove. Others have a nut at the top center of the spray arm that can be removed so the assembly can be taken apart. Each model has it's own particular variation. Sometimes running a cup of white vinegar through an empty cycle can help improve spray pressure.

    I use an all in one screwdriver. It has two different sized nut drivers on either side plus screwdriver pull outs with small and large philips and flat head. Each brand of dishwasher uses different connectors but most use a 1/4th inch nut the smaller size nut driver on my screwdriver or a 5/16 ths the larger size. You can see it on my KungFuMaintenance website "Choose Your Weapons" page on the right side. Anything purchased through me website I earn a small commission.

    What you can do is run an empty load with a cup of white vinegar poured into the bottom about once or twice a month. I show it and a bit more dishwasher tips in me vid "How To Make Your Dishwasher Work Better ". In my kitchen I have four four foot T8 fluorescent 4100k bulbs recessed in the ceiling behind two traditional acrylic diffusers. You can actually see them in me vid "How To Trim Down Kitchen Light Lens Covers" I like the 4100k color spectrum for fluorescent lighting.

    I just did this while my husband laid on the sofa watching a movie < __<
    It was the most disgusting thing I've ever seen in my life and to think I just 'washed' the dishes. If you have this dishwasher, clean it NOW!!! You can't use a regular screw driver, you have to use the type that's in the video. I even removed that back screen and cleaned it, too. GROSS!! It took about 45 minutes in all. Thanks for this very helpful video.

    This does help. I know that dishwashers have food filters to clean and was looking for where the filter was in the Potscrubber in our rental. Doesn't seem to be one - just this sump area you describe here. GOOD POINT TO REMIND PEOPLE TO BE CAUTIOUS OF GLASS! I recall a broken glass in the tub when we moved in.What is the cylinder in the front left corner?I agree with another comment about the filming. You got TOO close and it disoriented what you were doing, but overall, this video gave me good directions. Thank you.

    BloodOfYeshua: I just went through that tonight. The basket or grid is connected to the back of the the bottom water spout thing (Sorry, I don't know all the language..) In the front of the spout, if you look down and under, there is a tiny screw in the front. Remove that. Then, pull up on the back. The basket has a hole in it where the rotary water thing attatches to it at the base. Pissed me right off and made this take twice as long. I also removed the spinning thing, in the back there is a wedge that you need to grip and pull while lifting up the spinning part.. made seeing things much easier. At any rate, thank you thank you for this video. Other than this little bit I have added, the bottom of my GE dishwasher is very similar. It was absolutely disgusting, but is working like a charm now. The underside of my basket was totally just the most disgusting thing I have ever seen. I had broken mug and a lolli-pop stick down inside.. plus all kinds of food that couldn't get chopped up because of the clog up.

  • @k84953
    @k84953 9 років тому

    i pulled the cover off, stuck my fingers down the hole..and it was just a continuous curved tube. there is another hole under the cover that's covered by a circular mesh plastic cover, but I can't get it off for the life of me. I tried prying it off with a screwdriver but I only end up breaking the mesh (which is VERY hard plastic by the way). I tried jamming my screwdriver in there just to see what's inside and i felt like a metal ball thingy. not sure if I am supposed to go in there. I have an Whirlpool TUD4700SU1 if that helps.
    at this point I dont know what to do so I just closed everything back, threw in some vinegar and running a cycle.

    Hi, I have a similar model and the dishes in my upper rack seldom get clean, and there are food particles that dry and redeposit on a lot of the dishes when the entire program is finished. I'm wondering, inside the lower spray arm is a little circular device that you can pull up with your finger, does that thing extend all the way up on its own during the wash cycle? maybe mine is broken and that's why my upper rack dishes aren't getting clean? Please let me know if that can happen & what 2 do

    Thank you for the validation,I'm doing this crap right I think. Here I am 10 years after this video was posted in my 1940s home doing the exact thing to an identical extremely outdated dishwasher...I was raised with my 5 sisters and I being the dishwasher, scrubber, rinser,me the dryer, then another one of us as the put dishes away'er, then of course the eldest observing and pretending they did something important. So when it comes to a dishwasher,I'm probably the worst at rinsing my dishes off prior to the dishwasher,what's the point if Im washing the dang dishes before putting them in a dishwasher!?!.....well I'm learning that lesson the hard way now at 38years old,lol....yeah, this is almost the grossness equivalent to when my bathroom sink was clogged and I had to open up the trap under there to clean out...Naaasty,i hope this fixes it though cus I can't afford a new dish washer and I don't have enough kids who are old enough to be the dishwasher,lol.

      +Bobbie Mackay They are all slightly different. Some are reverse threaded. Some have release tabs that need to be pushed in to remove.

    I am taking the inside of my dishwasher apart and scrubbing it out there are roaches living in there, my dad never used it once he did not know. It really grosses me out as well as removing the different parts. Well any way i came to a drain of sorts that has a small propeller, but it only has 1 arm the other is broken off. Is this an essential part? If so how do you get to it? and about how much do they run:)?

      TAMARA MILKE These are usually one arm. It is a sort of disposal assistance blade. Not very strong wire. Won't endure much hence the heavy screens before it. Aids in break down of materials that get past the screens. Not easily replaced. Not completely vital. If it breaks. Perhaps more cost effective (labor plus parts plus success ratio effectiveness of replacement) to manually unclog as needed or replace dishwasher if needed.

      No it was a black thin gasket I never found out where it went but I have the dishwasher working in perfect order now.

    I have that same model dishwasher and every three months I get mold under that cover that you took off. it smells like a wet dog. I take it apart and soak it in bleach water. Have you run into that? Any ideas how to prevent it?
    Also... what kind of overhead lighting do you have in your kitchen? It looks like you live in Heaven :)

    My metal piece came off that was supposed to help drain my dishwasher 😒 where does it go?

  • @lightningfurystrike13
    @lightningfurystrike13 8 років тому

    My little metal arm was off and just laying in the reservoir when I went to clean it. It feels like a piece of gum or something knocked it loose. How do i put it back on?

    • @KungFuMaintenance
      @KungFuMaintenance  8 років тому

      +lightningfury To be honest I wouldn't worry about it to much. I would just rinse the dishes a tiny better before loading the machine and perhaps clean the sump once every couple years (and or run an empty load of white vinegar or dishwasher magic every 6 months or so) . That little metal arm just stirs things up a bit but really doesn't do enough to warrant going through the trouble to replace it. In my opinion.

    • @eeandersen
      @eeandersen 6 років тому

      That little metal arm is supposed to cut food up so it can go to out to drain. If it is loose, it is not cutting and food will accumulate in the sump. My cutter was broken and needed to be replaced. There is a very inexpensive kit with a new cutter and various seals that can be replaced at the same time.

    What are the odds that this video would be of my exact dishwasher. However I cannot remove the filter. There a piece of plastic tube stopping me from removing it.

      +Susan Galuski its a socket wrench. Also you can clean the bell housing, which in this video he did not.

    The dishwasher won't start with the door open but sure it is a bit safer to unplug it. You are working around electricity and water.

    Is the water that washes the dishes heated in the water heater in my basement or is it heated by the elements inside the dishwasher?

    • @KungFuMaintenance
      @KungFuMaintenance  8 років тому

      ~ On most dishwashers it is heated in both!

    • @newsreach
      @newsreach 8 років тому

      Thanks. I was asking because I recently turned down the temperature on the water heater in the basement and noticed that the dishes are not getting as clean. I just wondered if the two actions were connected or just a coincidence.

    • @KungFuMaintenance
      @KungFuMaintenance  8 років тому +1

      I see ~..~ it probably does have some effect. Best practice is to start dishwasher immediately after rinsing dishes with hot water. This way the initial fill cycle starts off with hot water and dishwasher is better insured to reach good temperature. Many dishwashers heater coil only heat up by time allowed for heater coil to be on and not temperature controlled.
      To put this another way timer runs according to allotted time whether water reaches specific temperature or not.
      Hope this helps!!! Thanks for watching! :D

      I see that you used the six in one screwdriver but which of the 6 pieces are you using to open that. I am here because my dishwasher didn't drain all the water and I tried to take off that piece with a screw driver and it didn't work so I'm wondering what tip I need to use

    • @eeandersen
      @eeandersen 6 років тому

      This is a new reply to an old question, but a 6-in-1 screwdriver is a nut driver when there is no tool in the holder, only the hex opening.

    Why is this the dishwasher in nearly every cleaning video?... also I don't want to use mine now, it's the same type as this, but even dirtier. Q_Q
    BTW is there always standing water in there?

    • @KungFuMaintenance
      @KungFuMaintenance  8 років тому

      +Shaggy2286 Yes very common dishwasher. A bit of water left behind is needed to keep the seals wet so they don't dry out and crack. If you don't want to touch anything in there a bit of white vinegar added to an empty load can help clean things out. Dishwasher Magic is also an effective over the counter (under the counter, LoL) treatment. (I don't work for them. I just like the product.)
