As a courtesy, your slide explaining phosphates has a typo in it. In addition, including the equivalent volume of water in liters might be helpful to our friends who use the metric system. It is: 11.35-30.28 Liters

After my recent rigmarole with my Samsung (It does not have a removable filter; I have to get in there with a screwdriver and take it apart to get gunk), I've decided dishwashers are so high maintenance (this video proves that) that I am tempted that when my machine finally dies, I will just go back to hand washing. By the time I rinse by hand I may as well finish washing. Appliances should make our lives easier, not be more complicated than the task it replaces.

Additional tips... some older dishwashers have no filter. They may have a built in disposal. My Whirlpool Imperial (2004 date) has a filter inside the door, which is apparently a vent filter that needs to be checked occasionally. If there is no water in the bottom of your dishwasher after it has finished washing, then your dishwasher is draining properly. Check the bottom of the dishwasher to make sure it's clear of old food and items that may have dropped into the bottom. Make sure the spray arms rotate freely. Very important, using the excellent Whirlpool Imperial (an older model from about 20 years ago) as an example, if you have a door that dispenses the dishwasher soap, check to see if that door is open when the entire cleaning cycle is finished. If it has not opened, and there is still soap inside that compartment, that means no soap is being dispensed on the second cycle of your wash. Generally you should have a compartment with no door, filled with soap for the first wash, and a compartment with a door and a latch that opens when the second cycle of wash begins. Both compartments need to be filled with soap before the first wash cycle begins. If you see that the door on the compartment has not opened, you can by pass that problem by doing the following. When the first cycle of your wash has finished, the machine will pump out the water and refill, then the second wash cycle begins. Shortly after that second cycle begins, you can open the door, refill the compartment with no door with soap, and close the door. Now you will have soap to do it's job in cleaning the second cycle of your wash. On the Whirlpool Imperial, approximately 20 minutes is the amount of time you have from the initial start to when the second wash cycle begins.
Either watch the clock or set a timer so you can add soap in 20 minutes. Sometimes that door may not open because you have loaded something against the soap compartment door. Other common cleaning problems are due to improper positioning of items in the washer. Load your dishes so water from the spray arms can spray on the surface of items you want washed.
I'm not a fan of the newer dishwashers, using less water, and having controls hidden at the top of the door so you have to open the door to see what the settings are. Whirlpool still offers models with face mounted controls, see whirlpool's website. The only problem I've had with the Whirlpool Imperial, manufactured 2004, was a temperature sensor. I removed the inner door panel and bypassed that sensor. The machine has worked fine for years without that sensor. I did have to clean the vent filter inside the door once. This machine sold at Brandsmart for 300 dollars, and has cleaned far better than the Kitchen Aid dishwasher I had previously, which cost over 500 dollars.

I quit using Whirlpool. I just finished placing my five year old Whirlpool dishwasher on the curb after 3+ repairs (both boards and water leaks). Repairs are high between year 2 and year 5. I am now using LG until Whirlpool (also sold under multiple names like kitchen-aide) fixes their reliability problems so that their dishwashers provide higher reliability between years 2 and 5. As with most newer appliances, the kitchen appliance industry is struggling with circuit board designs and are still learning how to make circuit boards that are water proof and last 10 years (durable goods requirement) without failures resulting from aging components like capacitors. Of course, the appliance industry redefined durable goods as 10 years of reliability on a few mechanical parts only. In reality, durable goods applies to the entire unit. Like cars, loss of market share will sooner or later result in an effort to remedy the reliability issues. First, they need to hire engineers that now how to specify the electronic components properly (i.e. military grade) source control specifications.

Rinse food of plates and never use rinse aid or heated drying.
When the fast 30 minute cycle is finished, i remove all pots, pans, cutlery basket and plastics leaving them out to dry overnight.
We have two full sets of plates etc so no panic to have it dry quickly for reuse.
Clean the filters once a month by dumping them in boiling water and bleach then give them a good scrub.

Opened it up and it was full of standing water! I bailed water out then took apart the glass trap, sprayer arm and that disk filter. More dirty water down there but am not going any further. Standing water removed, items appear back in their proper places. Wondering if I need to have drainage cleared out of pipes?

    • @BoulevardHome

Aside from using dishwasher detergent that is designed for hard water, doing regular cleanings with hard water cleaners (like the lemi shine), and regular maintenance of your filter, unfortunately, hard water just is harder on everything and you're going to find yourself replacing things more often. It may be worth considering installing a water-softening system if that's something that you have the ability to. I know not everyone has the luxury of installing softeners though.

Lemi Shine has dish washing tablets too and they are the only ones I can use.

Cascade platinum has rinse aid built in. The dishwasher has a compartment for rinse aid. So, is this redundant? Can I eliminate the rinse aid in the dishwasher? What about the cascade without rinse aid? Whirlpool representative recommended gel pods, although the instruction booklet doesn’t state that. I’ll try the lemi shine. My dishwasher was bought three months ago, and not cleaning, which is why I’m watching this video.

This is too new to not be cleaning. I'd guess the dishes are stacked in a way that interferes with the spray arms rotating.
