Stevie Wonder is one of those artists notorious for their vault of unreleased material. His "All I Do" form the 1981 Master Blaster LP, was a massive hit. Few knew at the time that it was originally written by him in 1966 (with Clarence Paul and Morris Brodnax) and recorded by both Tammi Terrell until it was posthumously included on the compilation A Cellarful of Motown! in the UK in 2002, 32 years after her death. Brenda Holloway also recorded a version that was released on her Motown Anthology set in 2005. Michael Jackson, Eddie Levert and Walter Williams of the O'Jays, and Betty Wright provided backing vocals for the song on Wonder's album. (adapted from Wikipedia)

The song was written for Tammi by young Stevie. He later recorded the song in a tribute to honor Tami after her passing! I honestly love both tracks but understanding the backstory really gives so much meaning to both! Rest in Paradise sister Tammi!
👑🖤🙏🏾🕊️
Neither one is better they're just different. Both legends !
DJ ME so very eloquently said in very few words.
yes sir... right
James Cleveland
But one sounds better to your ear! That's what he wants to know! So one if them did it better!
Stevie is just a better legend
My man Stevie takes this round, but Tammi’s version is soulful and warm in a different way. I had no idea that her version existed. Shame on me.
Stevie wrote the song for Tammi to record when she was alive.
Neither did I. I loved both versions.
Hers is beautiful but Stevie sound difderent, they're different
He was very young when he wrote it. He said he had TAMMI in mind
I agree with you and you are not alone. I had no idea she did this song. I like Stevie’s better.
Tammie struck a cord for me, hers sounds timeless along with her voice.
im with you... Tammie did her thing
Stevie
I love Stevie but. Her voice was sooo beautiful and timeless like you said.🌹
True indeed
@@ronaldgore7892 Tammi's voice is so hauntingly beautiful! Stevie wrote it for her and also the Gorgeous Ms. Brenda Holloway! Motown was so full of Talented Queens....ua-cam.com/video/FgLHcJOZzwI/v-deo.html It's interesting that he didn't record it for himself until 25 years later.
No real contest. Stevie’ s recording of his own song is epic with MJ on backing vocals. Tammy’s version is quintessentially reflective of the Motown sound of the 1960’s. Very special in its own right. 👋🏾👍🏾🙏🏿
I saw Stevie perform live in Cleveland in 1980 and Eddie Levert came on stage and did background vocals for All I Do.
I agree
Great answer
I didn't know Michael Jackson did his background on this...
I thought I heard some MJ
Tammi's version sounds seductive and kind of embraces you and is like a loving caress but Stevie's version grabs your emotions and conveyed the feeling that without her there would be no one else that his world would end if they could not be together. I can't imagine what Tammi would have become if she had survived and continued her mentorship under Marvin.
Nice anology
Thought I heard all her hits , but I never heard this . I love her voice and her version is beautiful but I can’t say which one is better , that would be uncivilized!
Valentino Icon FACTS!
^^^
Tammy's version of this song was unleashed until Motown released a 3 or 4 CD set of unreleased Motown material...
Yessss!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣niiiiiiiice
I'm giving Grammy Nominations to both of these performances. Love Tammi and Stevie!
I love Stevie's version. I tell you, Tammi's version takes me back to a time when life really was simplistic... Pure nostalgia😍
Simplistic! Well put.
When your birth certificate was a rock 🤣 old timers 😘
@@mob9359 😂😂😂😂😂💃💃
@@mob9359 Mr. or Mrs. Mo B, I'll take being an "Old Timer." of those being from the Baby-Boomer generation born in the years between (1946-1964), No problem. We are the generation that produced and heard "Original and Real Music." from real musicians. This presentation from the ReelBlack production team proves we, who was around in 1966 heard original music to the point the GR8 Stevie Wonder, another Baby-Boomer went back into the Motown archives and got permission to remake this classic. This record for Tammi Terrell was an album track that some, but not all DeeJay's have played on the radio back then. Original music, Mo B! Original. I love what presentations this ReelBlack team is doing and hope they take it up a notch or three. yes, they have that much music to re-evaluate, and present to us viewers who enjoy their work. Peace, Mo B.
Ms. Lockhart, I'm with you, Stevie's version trumps Tammi's version.
A piece of a love story: Mom singing Tammi Terrell version.. Dad singing Stevie Wonder version to Mom confessing their love. Both are a hit still.
Man, you're Killin' me. This the Bomb. Stevie never wrote anything but great music. He is a gift to this world. I'm an old Detroit Boy, and I'll love him till I die! I met both of them once, No, I'm not trying to associate myself their greatness, just that they were and are fantastic human beings. I love Tammi, but no one can cut Stevie. Thank you Reelblack, much love. Peace!
1 GREAT song!
2 GREAT versions!
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Can't judge because they both are good to me.
yeah..i cant be a monogamist when it comes to this type of shit
Ppl like Stevie because they have never heard Tammie’s until this video. They’re both great.
True, I am one of those people...
Tammie Terrells voice and Era stiil raines.
Stevie brought a new swing.
Both are works of art of the highest quality
Tammi for me, the 60's Motown sound sends shivers down my spine
I didn't know that Tammy originally did this song. I must admit that Stevie's version was the best.
Sherri Smith fun fact as a teenager stevie wrote the song for her
Never one to question the greatest of these two iconic voices. So to simply say they both sung it classically to their eras...GOD BLESS YOU MRS TERRELL REST IN HEAVEN.
Who knew?! I love 'em both! Bless Tammi's heart.
Didn't know Michael Jackson sang back up on this song RIP MJ
Damn can’t we say they both nailed it? Stop the division!
Thanks you
Legends in their own rights🔥💗🔥
@Marsha Scott tell it!
Thank you, let’s stop this Verzuz trend. I think it pigeonholes and belittles black artist.
Preach on
They are both awesome and inspirational in their take on the song!! Glad, I get the chance to enjoy both!!!😀
Thank you for digging up this hidden treasure!!! I never knew Tammi Terrell did this first.
Me neither
Apparently Stevie wrote the song so technically he did it first.
Stevie wrote it as a teenager, Tammi recorded it, but Motown never released it. Stevie came back and put a whole new flare to it as a grown man
Wow, never knew Tammy sang this.
Stevie wrote the song for her in 1966 at the age of 16. What a Genius!
Tammi got that Funk Brothers sound, but Stevie got Michael Jackson as a backup singer. It depends on the mood I'm in, I call it a draw.
hustleman85 Michael Jackson and the OJays
Woooow, i didn't know that!😃😃
I was thinking the same thing.....it depends on the mood that I am in.
hustleman85 Oooh wee. MJ and O’Jays on background vocals? Now, that’s a fun fact. Pure geniuses.
olskool71 Did not know all of them were singing back up
I love how humble everyone is in the comments saying that both versions are tied
That's exactly what I came here, to say, lol. But for me it's not polite, it's just honest. They're both my fav.artist. I still have my Stevie's, 'Hotter than July' 8track, bought back in late '70s, so you know he was going to be my pick, as best, but then I heard Tammi Terrell crystal clear beautiful voice, and I thought I can't even flip a coin on these two. They're just equally good.
@@c.calliecoleman1531 Hotter than July came out in the '80's. If you have the album you can check for yourself. I know your comment is a year old, but it baffled me when you said you had the album, but got the decade it came out wrong.
They Both Stand On Their own Both Classical And Beautiful..I Love them Both..
The production on the Stevie version is top flight and his vocal phrasing is what takes it to that next level. I'd never heard of her version before hearing it here. Since hearing Stevie's version for all these years I thought that I wouldn't like her version but I was wrong. I love Stevie's because of the different vocal inflections that give the song heart felt feelings. He sang it like he had just written thinking about some woman he was in love with.
these might as well be 2 different songs. In my view both songs stand on their own, because TT version is VERY Motown classical while Stevie made it his own. Even if Stevie had done this in the 60s it would've sounded different than "his original version". I said all that but I like BOTH.
Unsung donnie hathaway
Well said. two different songs. they both sound great
Stevie wrote the song!!!! She just “covered” it!!!
I agree with you 100%.
Stevie won tammi won great is great
Love Stevie’s hands down! Great disco club vibe. With MJ as backup you can’t go wrong. Tammi’s is more of a traditional “Supremes” vibe. It’s good too. 2 different musical styles from Motown.
Stevie wrote the song for her in '66. Micheal Jackson, Eddie Levert and Tammy are singing background on Stevie's version. Stevie was so ahead of his time!
Anthony Walker Tammy is NOT on Hotter Than July...
@@qbertykey6223 I stand corrected is it Betty Wright?
Anthony Walker No chicks. Mike J, Eddie L, Charlie Wilson...
Stevie Wonder - Hotter Than July, All I Do, lyrics. ... Michael Jackson, Betty Wright, Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, Jamil Raheem - Background Vocals ...
Anthony Walker Tammi can’t possibly be on here, because she had longed passed a away some 10-15 years ago, I think 68, 69. RiP Tammy. Loved here voice and all those great duets she did with Marvin Gaye, RiPMarvin.
After subsequent listens, I change my mind, Tammi wins hands down! Stevie's version is great but love Tammi's warm, cozy, effortless vocals. They really put me in a mood! Such a vintage sound and classic Motown arrangement.
Stevie got this one bro!
Both
Facts
I love her voice so pretty
@@TESSAPOOKIE1 yesss
Stevie Wonder is captivating! Takes me back to the years of listening to his LPs. Musical genius.
I love both and further proof of Stevie's genius. And I think it's wonderful how songs can be transformed to suit the era and the singer.
I'm a lover of soulful love songs... Tammi Terrell suits me just fine. RIP Beautiful❤
Stevland Morris.. No doubt!!! But cute though Tammi
Stevie is legendary, Tammi took it to the Motown era there is no comparing the two, they entail their styles, Stevie is soul, Tammi has a groove two different vibes both timeless
I'm sorry, but I love both! This is my first hearing the Tammi Terrell version. The Stevie Wonder version will always have a place in my heart. Both of them are great in their own way!!!
Same for me
Me too
Me 3.
Can’t be compared. Two entirely different artist with their own style to grace us during the era of their time. love them both❤️❤️❤️🎶🎶❤️❤️💋❤️❤️🎶🎶❤️❤️❤️
In her defense, Stevie had the benefit of hearing the original and building upon it.
I agree 💯
In Stevie's defense he wrote the song. Stevie got this one without breaking a sweat!!!!! 😉😉😉
Patrick Smith Thanks for mentioning that Stevie wrote the song. Many people didn’t know that.
Yep, he heard it in his head and gave it to Tammi.
MrRebuttal I realize that but that doesn’t change the fact that he was able to gauge the reaction to her version before he dropped his.
Tammi's version simply beautiful
And Yet Stevie I wouldn't want to live without it
Why Choose both are beautiful♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
LORD KNOWS I 💖 TAMMI...but *THIS song is ONE of MY all TIME favorites! By ONE of MY all TIME favorite ARTIST, SIR STEVIE WONDER*.💞💖💞
I see Tammi's ( RIP, Goddess) version opening a movie with Spike Lee directing. I want to sit with a tall glass of wine and play her entire album and especially this song. Her version is so beautifully upscale and sounds like art. It's just Divine, as She was and a bit haunting because she literally floats over the song. She might have recorded the song when she wasn't feeling the greatest but her vocals are Truly Heavenly and Genius as she was. After hearing her sing You truly wanted to know everything about her. She was in her earlier 20's and possessed this "It Factor". Now Stevie's version is Epic but strictly for every World Disco until "The End Of Time". Stevie knows how to attack Your soul and then leaves You with nothing but to dance. Stevie's catalog contains some of "The Sexiest Dance Ballads Ever!!!"....It's an Even Tie for Me.
Man this apples 🍎 to oranges 🍊 Stevie by far
But...they're both fruit.
Damn SHE went thru HELL in her SHORT LIFE,But she was GORGEOUS AND THE VOICE 2ND to NONE...RIP
I really liked em both. Had never heard the Tammi Terrell version before. I'm more used to Stevie's version. I would give him a slight nod, only because I'm more familiar with his version
I love both Tammi gone but not forgotten 😇❤❤❤
Tammi Terrell was putting her Lovely Heart and soul in it ❤🌹😔
As others have said, no need to compare. Truly 2 different sounds and songs. Two extremely talented vocalists!!
Impossible.
It’s like trying to figure out which one of my children I love best.
I feel bro on that one;-)
Ha
Hahaha everyparent has a favorite hu lol
😅
Youe oldest !!!!!
Tammie version mesmerized me. 🔥
I agree, she made me want to cry.
Tammi's version is like one commenter said 60s style and it sounds unique in that regard and Stevie really made it his own with his style, but Tammi's version has what seems to be more focus on the words/lyrics and keeping them clear.
Stevie definitely made it his own... by writing it!
I LOVE both Tammi and Stevie, but I must say...TAMMI has my vote!
I LOVE YOU Tammi Terrell an legend in her own right... hand's down Stevie Wonder Got it!!
First time hearing Tammi's version and it is Excellent. I love both of them. Of course I own the vinyl album and CD of Stevie's Hotter than July, but Tammi is just as good in terms of quality and performance. Very good song enjoyed both versions.
My God! I didn't know the lovely and great, the original 'Lady T' originally recorded this wonderful song, I love it! BUT! I grew up listening to Stevie's version..... Gotta go with Stevie.
Stevie's left hand is slaying it. Best Bass fill ever. Damn
I actually I like tammi's version better, but this is a mega match up.....no best, just great vs great.
💯💯💯💯
Can never beat a ORIGINAL just add a few trinkets and hope nobody compares the attempt. Stevie tried it 😅 both were good
@@tammygreen8962 Stevie wrote it.
I really love both versions, but Stevies version is so much more infectious... once i hear it, its stuck in my head for the day! Tammi Terrell is sooo fab in her own right, but when i hear "All I Do" all i hear is Stevie Wonder. One of my most favorite songs from him too!
I chose Stevies version but it was great to hear Tammies version of the song. I never heard it before... Classic song!
Both are unique. But the composition is represented well in both artists style. I really like them both for different reasons.
Wow... I won't pick. Incredible by both.
I really like them both, for different reasons. One reminds me of when I was 9-10 yrs, and the other when I was 16-17 years. A big difference in music appreciation by then. Just a great composition, interpretated differently. 60's- 70's...
No contest. Stevie. I didn’t know there was another version. Nice hearing another legends version.
Harry Pool Yep Tammy did it 1st but Stevie made it his own(well he wrote it) and his version is what everyone knows!
Tammi Terrell....gone too soon! Her voice was magical! No way you can compare two great legends! Stevie took the song to another level and rightfully so....he wrote it, he owned it! They both win!
Tami's version is classic Motown style I never heard it before but I love it. Stevie's version is great like everything he does he is an extraordinary talent.
Ms. Terrell's version makes me think about family long gone. Stevie Wonder's version makes me want to hustle 💃🏾. I love them both❤
Tammi, produced first. Therefore, it's a classic. Although Stevie Wonder, put his spend on it... sounds good. 60's ves 79's.
Gaynell Udohnichols - Stevie wrote the song and let her “cover” it!!!!
Ain't nobody had told me! Tammie's version is sentimental and beautiful. I cant pick, each version touches the heart in its own way. Wow thank you so much, stay ReelBlack for me!
I raised listening to Stevie's version but I can't pick. I'd say energy wise it goes to stevie. Can't help but love how he puts so much emotion into his music
Tammi voice is so smooth effort less and I was born in 86. I love Tammies. Stevie does his thing but hers is more Genuine
Wow! I never heard Tammi's version before (so I considered myself schooled, for real). Both versions send me to thoughts in my mind. But I grew up listening to Stevie's version at BBQs, card parties and House parties.... Stevie wins this round but I am going to download Tammi's rendition for sure 💯😊👏... Thank you
Very different. Stevie always creates mini-soul symphonies. Tammi's ethereal voice makes this a pretty little pop symphony.
Although this is the first time that I have heard Tammy's version, my vote goes to her. Stevie's is great but Tammy put soul into her's while he put more vocal acrobatics in his. I just love the soul more.
Although I liked your comment and I do get what you're trying to say, Stevie did also have a lot of soul in his version. His was just more upbeat...and her's is more sultry or "seductive" or sexy, etc.
I agree Tammi came PURE and TRUE. Stevie wrote it specifically for her, even by his own admission, she was perfect for this song period
@@Ginanotfromitaly Yes ugh!!!😆 Both bring so much! . I say tie 😆😅. I just tapped out ✊🖐️💖. TEAM TAMMI AND STEVIE 😅
@@tammygreen8962 Yes! They're both really good! There can never be a third version, well, unless it was sung by Michael Jackson!!!! He's the only one who could pull off a third version of this beautiful song.
I like both versions from two OUTSTANDING LEGENDARY singers the ONE AND ONLY Tammi Terrell RIP 😢🙏👏
and Stevie Wonder👏👍
Wow! I never heard that Tammi Terrell version.
I'll give both versions a thumbs up.
But I always been a fan of Stevie Wonder's music. So he's my natural choice.
One of best female vocalist that done it. Yes she does strick a major cord for me. Thank you my beautiful sista.....
Love both versions but, her life was cut so short. She made such an impact in her time on earth, even pairing with Marvin Gaye. Even a musical genius like Marvin Gaye picked her because she had everything. Full of talent.
I have some strong memories attached to Stevie's version,, and I absolutely adore it! BUT, Tammi's version is precious. My vote could go either way depending on my mood.
Me too
Stevie All day
I Love both song's. Stevie sounds Wonderful it has that 80s kick to it. Love it. Love him as a songwriter and singer. Tammi My Girl, her version is Amazingly Beautiful and Haunting. It has that signature Motown 60s sound. Imagine if Tammi Terrell was alive and she recorded songs in the 80s. I can imagine her doing The Mary Jane Girls songs, like All Night Long, Candy Man, Boys. She would have killed it❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I honestly hadn't heard Tammi's version before ! It definitely has that old school Motown sound ! But Stevie's version is more upbeat & modern . I've got to give it to Stevie Wonder ! 👏🏾👏🏾
Didn't know this was a remake both are awesome
Never heard Tammi's version she sounds a lot like Diana Ross, sweet and cutebut Stevie being the genius he is Nailed it " hands down"
I love both versions. I didn't know that Tammy's version existed until a few weeks ago and I fell in love with it. Motown ❤️❤️❤️
Stevie is my man, but I love Tammi's version, gorgeous too!!
Today is the first time to hear Tammi, AMEN! BLESSINGS TO YOU!
It would have been tight if these two would have made a album together.
What the.......!!!?!?! Wow didn't know her version even existed! But I like them both!!! Nice laid back version & a strong, upbeat version.... thumbs up to both!!!
For the type of song, it had to be sung with the passion Stevie sang with. Its A passion driven composition.
Oh my goodness....I had no idea Ms. Tammi originally made this recording....I absolutely love her version and I didn’t think anyone could replace Stevie in any way in my mind and heart.....this is a tie for me and this is the first tie I’ve heard her version.
Stevie No Question
Both songs are so beautiful, I wish I could've been born in that era of music and God could've took me, before all the music we have now and my ears could've stayed blessed, damn
It's Never about who does it better. They each do it differently.
Both of them are great
TheBrownIsland That doesn’t mean people can’t compare.
@@Imsorryman compare yes
But be fair. You can't go head to head with more advantages and with someone on a shoestring budget 😆 I'm living in the projects, your living in a mansion 😅 how you going to compare that ain't Fair🤗 Stevie wrote it for her seriously. He felt she was perfect for the song.i just let that lay here and marinate. He only put it out because Motown didn't do it justice. It was a tribute to her. Everyone adored this woman. The industry knew that Gordy dogged his artists especially anyone threatening Ross and Tammi did so Rip QUEEN 👸 💯 They tried it 💔 they tried it again boo but I got you😔😥💖 💯
I agree they use it for click bait and to get people to argue some people like to cause strife.
@@tammygreen8962
I'm hearing a lot of more stuff about Barry Gordy that's not good sad. Tito's son asked him did he like the Jackson 5 better or the Jacksons...Tito said Jacksons cause the royalty checks were better.😂🤣 They say Tammi was murderd so if she was a threat to Diana... This is possibly true. Dam shame
Thanks Reelblack. I did not know that Ms. Terrell did a version of one of my favorite Stevie Wonder songs. I try to learn at least one new thing everyday and this was it for today.
I never heard Tammi’s version but Stevie got this one besides it’s one of my favorite Stevie song!!!
Surprisingly, love Tammi's version, never heard it until now, but Stevie's is a classic as well.
Tammi Terrell; I just prefer 50s-60s Rhythm & Blues/Soul...
Can't beat it!! Natural acustics
👍🏾; Especially when it’s put down by Motown’s Funk Brothers.
That's why I favor Tammi's version because of that Motown sound from the 60s
Excellent previously unknown info about the background singers
