  • @danieljacobs6909
    @danieljacobs6909 3 місяці тому +1082

    Shane was playing so powerfully, so beyond his normal level, that NO ONE seemed to notice he had broken his stick during the song so he could get a spare. That whole improvised end solo, done with a broken stick in his right hand, in front of a full arena paying tribute to his father is next level. If you missed the stick break, it happened sometime around that last chorus, but if you pause at 5:14 you can see it's so bad the whole tip is gone. Unreal.

    • @ryangillin8431
      @ryangillin8431 2 місяці тому +91

      I heard a few gaps during the chasing toms parts like someone was handing him new sticks. At that intensity, he probably broke several. You could tell he didn't care. He was gonna go full throttle for that song if he broke 50 sticks

    • @danieljacobs6909
      @danieljacobs6909 2 місяці тому +28

      Hi Ryan, thanks for your response. I've watched footage of the performance from all sides and there is no roadie, no extra stick or sticks. Breaking a drum stick usually occurs with heavy playing and poor technique at most once a week when you're not on full tour, and if already worn in, you'd know to have spares present which he didn't. I saw him play the tune a few weeks before as well so I know his technique was stable. From what I could tell from the south and east views I checked, everyone was so into his solid playing and his posture/thrashing was so distracting that no one considered to check on him since there wasn't a glaring mistake. I'm a professional strings musician and only play marching snare, so I asked a drum teacher colleague to weigh in, and he suggested that because Shane plays so hard normally, he likely was comfortable enough to finish the tune without a fuss even with the fills at the end. Definitely something I couldn't/wouldn't play with a broken stick@@ryangillin8431

      @@Hornswoop Idk. Dave has always written the songs and we all know he can lay down the drums in the studio. He played the drums on the first 2 albums. Or they could use a touring drummer or special guest drummers for live shows. I could see drummers like Chad Smith, Travis Barker, etc etc filling in on the road. Like AIC did after Layne passed. I personally don't think AIC should've continued on. At least not under the name AIC but Foo Fighters is Dave's band and it always has been. I hope they hang it up but I could see them going on. Maybe even just recording, no touring. Idk we'll see. But I think i can say with some certainty that Taylor's son won't be replacing his father in FF.

      He was a bit quick at the start, which I’m sure was because of adrenaline. But I noticed on the turn around riff, before the first verse starts, that the boys slowed him down a bit. So it speaks to them overall as a band, to be able to communicate through their playing, what he needs to do. And it speaks to his maturity on the drums to realize it and adjust.

    • @EulbYvi

      @@MrAdamloring1985 this is something I didn't notice, but it speaks volumes if they can communicate as a band even though this is hard for all of them, but especially for him... And they are not a band. They didn't play this a million times over the years... So to be able to do that is even more amazing.
