I’m a bit late here. A great option is the Ontario model 1. You can get them partially serrated with colorful scales. I carry one with orange scales to show it’s a utility used knife and I believe the steel was upgraded to D2 a few years ago. I have fairly large hands and it’s works great for me. Mileage may vary.
Spyderco manix2 in S30 or m4. LW is as rugged as the G10 in my experience. I would get two knives a full serrated for popping ties and a full plain for everything else.❤❤
Great to hear from someone who’s used these blades extensively! I have the bigger version and it’s held up great over the years. I recommend trying out a Manix 2. It feels great in hand, doesn’t look aggressive, and has a very strong lock that works similar to Benchmade’s
You’ve summed it up very well: relying on reviews, not being able to handle before buying, can only buy via mail order, and no easy option to return. That’s my dilemma as well. I’ve decided on the Spyderco Native 5 in LC200N; and now I have to wait for my local mail-order-only distributor to restock it. (I can’t even order from the US.)
Cold Steel Recon 1 CPM-S35VN Model: 27BS. I love Spyderco but if your looking for a knife that can handle your big hands and Swed power I'd go this route. It's not as agile as the Spyderco but its built to handle a lifetime of very hard use. The CPM-S35VN is also a sweet spot steel. This Model is not serrated and apparently their serrated models are not their strong point but their knives are as tough as it gets for the $$$.
The Spyderco ParaMillitary 2 (G10) is nice. They have partially serrated blade as an option. The Compression lock is reliable. Tons of aftermarket clips, scales etc
Hi from Italy, I usually buy from Lamnia, what do you think about Manix2? Made in USA, quite strong work knife. Price is high but not crazy. The Tenacious is now available in s35vn and frn scales.
I have held the manix 2 once, and it is a fantastic knife. But the really pointy tip makes me a little nervous, for what I use the knives for. FRN scales are not my preferred material, not sure why I don’t like it. I like my knives to be a little more heavy. I am considering the Benchmade Mini Adamas in cruwear, but I would have to put some different scales on it, it looks too military.
2 years late. I recently bought a Tenacious lightweight. Unfortunately prices have gone up. I paid 61€ for it and 53€ for a Sencut Sachse both ordered from knivesandtools instead of Lamnia. Surprisingly the Tenacious felt more comfortable than the supposedly better Sachse. Comfortable in hand but the hole is not ideal as I am used to thumpstuds and flipper tabs. Those 61€ still feel a little steep though.
Cold steel AD10. I have really small hands ao i got rid of mine but it was an absolute tank of a knife. Or get an AD15 if you want a "fun" lock that's still tough
Take the blade out and put it in oven at 300 degrees for 2 hours let cool completely then repeat. After blade is cool re instal and try sharpening. It should be much better. The reason for me suggesting this is that particular blade may have gotten a bad heat treat or was not properly anealed. Good luck
I would suggest the Spyderco Manix 2 G-10 Serrated C101GPS2. Cold steel its a great recommendation, but I prefer the locking mechanism and Spyderco serrations. Good luck with your next knife!
Thanks! The Manix 2 is definitely on my wishlist, so is the Shaman. But very costly here…that being said, I ended up ordering a benchmade bugout aluminum. Which is thinner. And with a more brittle steel. Oh well. Fickle is the heart and all that…
Try a paramilitary 2 it's just a really good knife similar features just really good action and comes in all sorts of steels and configurations and also a spyderco manix you won't be dissapointed
I'd consider getting a Benchmade Griptillian, Benchmade Presidio II or Benchmade Redoubt because they have long handles for your larger than average sized man hands. I just got a Benchmade Bugout this weekend (I am a female with medium sized hands) and yes it would be too small for you (I think its really small myself). Many US knives don't have combo serrated blades, they just aren't that popular. I think the Benchmade Adamas is very aggressive and tactical looking. I'd also consider getting the Tenacious Lightweight folder with the better steel with the new blue FRN handles, or the Manix2 as others have suggested. Another maybe, the CIVIVI Cogent Flipper Knife. For non-serrated, I loved my Cold Steel American Lawman but don't have a comb serrated blade. I'd avoid SOG knives, which get a lot of mixed reviews. I am waiting for my Benchmade 940 with the green handle to come in today and that gets stellar reviews but doesn't come in a combo blade.
Thanks for the tips! I think I need to move away from the combo blades. It is a habit from my diving days, and I think I can get used to living without it. I have the bugout in aluminium now, and I like it in the pocket. Whenever I need something bigger I guess I can use a fixed blade….but yeah. It is a different thing all together compared to my other knives
If you’re busting folders, a demko might not be the worst way to go. An ad20.5 is gonna be roughly similar in size with a hefty lock and better steel. Demko’s aesthetics are a bit “full on” for my tastes but my AD15 is essentially indestructible. I can image the 20.5 is similarly diesel…and it keeps you from having to buy something goofy like a cold steel American lawman. The heftiest spyderco that’s still practical is proooobably the Manix 2. I have a few of them (including a crucarta model) and they’re similar to the demko in the toughness department…probably even moreso than the shaman, which is my all-time favorite knife.
Yeah, thats the one called Osbourne, right? I’ve been eyeing that one. I also like the Mini Adamas, but it looks more than a little tactical. And I can’t walk in to a shop and handle them here, I have to shop online and hope for the best….
A few months to late. What did you get? If you want a strong capable knife 🔪 that you can beat on get an Ad20.5. The that in your phone and it should pop up. Very popular knife.
Thanks! Ended up carrying a fixed blade a lot more, and then I bought a Benchmade Bugout aluminum. Still haven’t fallen in love with it….it is very pretty, but…not sure.
That is an interesting tip. I haven’t had anyone mentioning Byrd knives at all, don’t even think I know anyone who owns one. But I am very interested in getting a made in the US knife, Byrds are from Asia, right?
@@andrimnerofsweden2615 They are Asian made, yes. If your going US made, maybe check out the para 2. Similar blade size, bigger handle, thicker blade stock. Cons, higher price and very rough G-10 (makes my tenacious handle feel like slick plastic by comparison).
@@danielschmidtke9213 thanks! Have ordered a benchmade bugout with aluminum scales. Bit different from what I originally had in kind, but fell for it. Probably need to get a rougher beater too. Maybe even another tenacious….
That’s a really hard one to answer. It is a LOT of knife for the money. It served me well for years. If you are not super in to knives, it will probably be the only one you need. But, if you are a bit interested in the earliest tool man created, it probably lacks a bit of premium feel. It depends on your budget. Would I buys this again? Absolutely. Would I prefer something a bit better? Yeah. Can I justify the extra cost of a more premium one? I will let you know…(but I do prefer not to buy chinese)
2 years too late! My spyderco tenacious 6 year of use just failed and I replaced it with the CRKT M21-04, and in my opinion its a much better and stronger knife.

Have a look at the Civivi knives in D2 steel. Don't know for serrations, but they fit a lot of what you want.

50 bucks knife 6 years of use , i will call it a win . I hope mine will serve me just as long :D
