- How Hard Is Cheap Knife Steel? Hardness Testing Spyderco Tenacious 8cr13mov. I was definitely surprised by the results. Results are on the rockwell scale or HRC. Look for lots more testing in future videos.
About⬇️
Hi, Im Alex, im a knife maker and UA-camr, based out of southern Pennsylvania and my youtube channel is Outdoors55. This channel started as an outdoor backpacking channel, but quickly grew into a knife/ knife making channel. Everything I do on my channel is family friendly. I primarily focus on knife / knife making videos but occasionally throw in something different. Thank you for watching!😀

Edit: This is not a new idea on my end. Lots of people have been testing production knife hardness for ages. I believe in continued testing. For the same reason you wouldn’t dyno a 2012 corvette once and call it good. The 2022 corvette needs to be tested as-well. The more data points the better!

Cheap Amazon knives that boast some good steel could be interesting to just see how they compare to vetted brands... But owning a bunch of cheap knives really isn't worth adding to the collection
Good idea for a series, spyderco seki zdp-189 please, as I have that one, I'm predicting it coming in at about 62/63, I very much doubt they have any going out at the 64 or higher that spyderco has claimed but never know.
Other requests, official SAK's, leathermans, and gerbers etc, should bring in some views and interest.
The Z-Hunter. Who knows what steel..if it is steel.
@@stevenrobertson6656 LOL !

Spyderco hrc and heat treatment in the past 2 years seems to have gotten really good compared to the older stuff
Glad to hear that👍 Interestingly though, this knife is from 2010. 🙂
I'm with Jared, some Spyderco models have always been good, those being tool steels. The stainless has had some dips and the 20CV and 204P from them has always been soft.
@@Outpost_76 I’ve never understood how m390, 204 and 20CV are analogues yet the acceptable HRC for 20CV and 204p is lower.
@@stevenlachance8576 that's just it, acceptable hrc for 20CV and 204P is the same as M390. The problem is almost all can't seem to get 20CV or 204P to a decent hardness in production blades. I'm not positive why and a great example would be the first run Dlt 20CV Manix coming close to 61 in the hardest I've seen tested yet the M390 Manix regularly hit 61.5 to 62.5. Same company less than a year apart. If ypu add in the PM2 runs the difference in 20CV and M390 gets huge, as much as 4.5 points of hardness between some examples.
First I ever tested was the Khukuri, can't say I've been disappointed with Seki city. Results may very for other people.
Another reason why this is THE best knife channel on YT 😁👍
No shilling for manufacturers, no ads for crappy video-games, no BS, just good wholesome observations based on Alex's first-hand experience...
Keep-up the great work buddy, and we'll keep watching 😊
The tenacious and resilience are two of my favorite “cheap” knives. Spyderco’s 8cr13mov sharpens up like a light saber.
Agreed. Easy to sharpen, and holds a working edge for plenty long enough for me.
I'm curious what any Civivi knife would test. I got one of their Elementum button locks, and I'm pretty happy with it for the price.
I’ll be releasing that video soon..
They actually have good heat treats
Watch @The Hardness Channel's video he actually posted it ^
Buck’s US 420 HC vs Buck’s Chinese 420 HC . Want to see if the Bos heat treat makes a difference. Buck Pursuit and the Buck Selkirk would be good models to compare .
I have a buck on the say right now but that idea definitely peaks my interest 👍
I did a video on this a couple years ago and it's a big difference in wear resistance and hardness.
Also, the old U.S. Schrade 7-OT (in both the high carbon and the stainless versions) vs. the new Chinese Schrade 7OT stainless blade.
That hardness tester is legit!
Awesome to see someone finally do this kinda vid series & format! I've never seen anyone test Spyderco's S35VN, so if that's in the realm of possibility I'd much appreciate it!👍👍👍
I have dozens of knives, from low and high end production folders to custom hand made fixed blades. The one knife that is ALWAYS with me though is the Victorinox Classic SD. This is the smallest and least expensive of the line with a blade, file, scissors, toothpick and teasers. It is small, but can keep a scalpel sharp edge fairly easily. My other knives rotate based on where I am going, what I’m wearing or my mood. This little red wonder is always consistent though. And yes, I usually have two knives on me at any given time. I’m under no illusion that someone could skin a boar with the Victorinox. I’d be interested in seeing that tested. Bonus is that it’s cheap!
I'm with you on that one. Mine is the Victorinox Signature. It's so nice to have a hidden pen at all times. I believe UA-cam propagates knife arrogance towards small blades that don't withstand being beaten to death.
There is a comment on youtube from a hunter skinning with the smallest victorinox blade once. Personally I carry and dislike that blade but like the Swiss Lite package
Breaking: “Victorinox issues M390 knife blade in their iconic little knife and sells 50,000 knives in a day”
It will never happen because they are stubborn Swiss, but one can dream.
(:
SO GLAD you started this series!
Excellent!!! That's why I'm so satisfied with my Cara Cara 2!!! . Eight years of daily use at work sites and still going strong. Thanks a lot.
Never seen before on UA-cam!!!! Cheers!!!
Thank you for your work and research! This is definitely one of the best channels I’ve seen on youtube. Thanks ❤
Welcome back, I'm glad to see you making videos again!
Alex, this will be a good series. I would like to see similar steels from major makers tested. I would be nice to shoot a primer video for people who aren’t familiar with how the testing is performed. I used to heat treat steels for aircraft repairs, but other folks may not understand the process.
I thought about that and maybe i will. I think most people who are buying knives now know what hrc is. If I get a bunch of questions about it than i probably will.👍
@@OUTDOORS55 maybe not the principle, but the protocol for testing and the way the machine works would be nice!
Thanks a lot for your work
I have a VERY general understanding of heat treating but would like to know more about it.
Looking forward to this series. Glad you will be posting more frequent.
This series are great please continue doing them and test all the knifes you have. That would be great 👍
Appreciate the effort 👊
good to see you back!! It’ll be interesting to see the testing on knives made by you with common steels, which are the ones used by most of us hobby knife makers. Keep up the good work my friend! 👍🏼
Awesome! Looking forward to this series!
Glad to see you're back at it! I'm glad you seem to have a lot of your audience too!
Love that the videos will be short and sweet! Great data points!
Thank you for these tests
Glad to see more videos to come!
I'll be keeping an eye on these. Good stuff.
Thanks for doing this. I’ll be looking for future tests.
Dude, I'm glad u upload so much atm =)
Love your vids =)
Yes, the test I hoped to see on a channel one day. Happened to look up hardness testing on pocket knives and found you. Definitely subbed
I’ll be looking forward to lots of hardness testing. Thanks👍🏻
I like this as a concept! 👍
Just realized you are making videos again. Glad you are back.
Great idea for a video series. I’m anxious to see the next one.
Hi bro!! Welcome sight to see you again here. Looks like a great series you’ve started.
I'm hooked. Love the concept, this is information a new knife maker, like myself, will find useful an entire 20+ year career.
Wow this open a new line of possibilities for your videos, not just for knives, but for test pieces aswell, like 1095 water quenched, 1095 oil quenched, and so on. looking forward for this new series.
It would be interesting to see how the old traditional knifes like the old slipjoints in 420 Stainless Steel compare.
Awesome idea!
Good presentation. Fair test. Good information.
I like these hardness testers. We had one about three times that size in our machine shop at work.
They don't lie!
Thanks Alex !!
I know (or used to) the head QC guy at Spyderco here in Colorado. Good dude. Knows his stuff.
This is a brilliant idea for content 💡
Now this is an interesting series. I would love to see the results of Spyderco's K390 steel.
I tested my delica in k390 and was hitting 64-64.5hrc.
Quite an interesting video, sir. I know little about steel composition and what not, and this still intriguing.
great idea!
Keep it coming! Excited to see more of this! I would love to see any of Benchmade’s S30v or 20CV
I would also like basically any other Spyderco Steels, k390, REX45, s30V, 20CV, S90V, M4 etc.
Great series, can't wait to see them all.
ALL THE KNIVES IN THE LAND!
Kidding, whatever you've got is fine with me, I'm curious about treatments from one manufacturer to another.
Great stuff
Oh this is gonna be a very informative series. I’d like to see all of benchmade’s premium blade steels tested and then we cross reference that info with other brands blade steels. Heck man you can do so many different things with this data
this will be a very interesting set of videos!!!!!!🖒🖒🖒
Well done!
Great video idea, I think it would be interesting to see differences for same steel, say S30V or S35VN, from different brands. (Buck, Cold Steel, Benchmade, Spyderco, etc...) looking forward to seeing the rest of the series. 👍
Really good video, my man. I will be looking forward to scrutinising your playlist with much interest. Thank you for your time and effort. ❤️✌️🖖👋🇬🇧
Definitely looking forward to these tests! I'd also love a new video on the house remodel. I'm sure you've done LOTS of work since that video you posted.
Yes, LOTS of work lol! Ill do a tour once I am In and settled🙂
I would like to see any cheaper knife with 8cr13mov and compare there is a lot of difference or not.
In my country (Czech republic) tenacious costs about 60$ and cheaper 8cr13mov can be around 30$
Tease!!!!!!!! But glad to see you back on youtube guy!
Thankyou for posting kind sir, just thankyou.
That harbor freight Rambo knife!
Just the series we need. Thanks for investing in the channel and bringing us the information we want lol. Especially after the Hinderer and Transparent Knives debacle! If you could test Hinderer and Transparent that would be great.
THANK YOU
I love this!!! Yasser
Dude, cool idea for your channel
Nedfoss gentleman's folder is the best bang in the sub $30 range! Do that one, yes!
3 videos in 3 weeks?? I've enjoyed them all.
I'd love to see tests on "SUPER" steels. s30, xhp, s90, s110, maxamet, and the like.
Man I wish I had a hardness tester, I made a knife in 10v and I wish I knew what the hardness was. Atleast I know it cuts well! 😂
They are expensive and HEAVY, and take up a lot of room...Seeing the numbers are interesting though. I may be open to knives being sent in for test in the future once i get through with moving.🙂
@@OUTDOORS55 I hope so !!
@@OUTDOORS55 I'd send in s90v bugout and maxamet para 3 for a test
@@OUTDOORS55 I have a really beat up Rockstead that you could test.
Glad you're settled enough that you can make regular content, though I still enjoyed your longform road trip. That was some beautiful scenery.
Thanks! It was nice out there!
I work as a local butcher and it’s nice to see someone who understands it’s not all super expensive just the right know how and this guy knows how 😂👍☺️
Nice Machine!
Looking forward to the testing of the knives you made. Like the "accidenral" one from a file
I'd love to see alot more of this hrc testing on knives.
This is interesting! Thanks for doing it. I'd be interested in seeing the same steel tested, but from different companies, different years and different countries of manufacture. You get the idea.
Timber Rattler Outlaw bowie knife... It's enormous and glorious
Great video! I'm secretly hoping people will mail you their expensive custom/semi-custom knives to test their hardness.
Just an idea but vintage pocket knives from different countries would be pretty interesting I think.
it would be interesting to see the results of testing like 10 different examples of the same knives
I’d like to see some cheap kitchen knifes done.
Also compare hardness files to an accurate hrc tester. Never seen this properly done
Well, THIS was a good video series idea.
The Civivi suggestions would be an interesting one. The one I had in mind (and yes, I did just buy one of these) is the Benchmade Freek. Or any CPM - M4 knife, really. I'm just impressed by the edge retention and ease of sharpening for M4; seems to strike a good balance.
Great!
👍👍👍 good news
Ok, subscribed!!
Wil see how this Resilience turns out.
Thanks for the support 🙂
Hey here’s an idea. After you’ve run the gamut of knives, maybe do some random hardness tests of different things. ie: circular saw blades, sawzall, stuff a lot of beginners try to use to make knives.
Already in the works😉
@@OUTDOORS55 you stay on point !! Very good!
Thanks again for sharing your vids.
Your Endura ZDP189 has my interest.
Id like to see some crkt knives tested, specifically id like to see the pilar. I used to carry one for edc but it always seemed to wear quickly. Thanks for the awesome content!
YES! Love this video please do some Benchmade m390
I'd love to see a hardness test on any LionSteel Sleipner.
Cool vid. Could you add a video about how this hardness tester works in your playlist ? I think it would be interesting to know a little bit more precisely what these numbers means and how they're obtainded.
Any Hinderer!!!
Sorry, to soon??? 🤣😜
GREAT idea, this will be a cool series.
Id rather not buy one, but if I find someone who has one ill test it. I have a good lawyer🙂
He’s finally back
Nice job!
It would be really cool to see Spyderco's S90V, S110V and ZDP-189. And a Bugout in S90V.
I would love to see any victorinox basic knife, they’re literally everywhere, I can’t imagine anyone who likes knives not owning one
I know there's over a million videos on the Gerber American 420HC but that can hold an edge ❤
Good video, easy on the music. :)
This is a great idea, nice investment Alex.
Apart from what you have seemingly already started, consistence; a comparison of same blade steel from same manufacturer, I'd like to see:
- Same steel, different manufacturers and price ranges. How's Benchmades S30V compared to Spydercos and Civivi?
- Super Steels
- "A to Z": From a scam knife like Huusk to budgets like Mora stainless, and Carbon to expensive Super steel and Ceramic.
Keep up the good work! Great to have you "back"!
Just finished 3 lawns to be greeted by this video, glad I got notifications on! Could you try testing a a kershaw blur tanto? ~$80 This has been my everyday carry for 5 years and my dad's everyday carry for like 12years. His knife is significantly shorter from losing the tip and sharpening lol. Thankyou in advance if you do.!
Not really a specific knife but I'd like to see victorinox knives, and I wonder if the steel is consistent with the blade and the other tools .
I’d like to see a charothers delta 3v knife or a tops 1095 differential heat treated blade
If you're up for it, I would be interested to see a Hinderer test with the current controversy and drama around their hardness levels.
Id have to find someone who would be willing to send one in that hasn’t been tested yet..Im not sure id purchase one, just not my style. I dont know enough about the situation to comment either way.🙂
I absolutely love your idea about HRC testing. KA-BAR Dozier-AUS 8 steel is something that I hope you will want to test. And also, if possible, a Mora fixed blade with 12C27 stainless steel.
This is going to be a great series, good job man.
p.s. How is the house going?
How about a cheapy-cheap knife like a Smith & Wesson for less than $10.
I would love to see some kind of dollar store or even worse (if it even exists) knife in that kind of test to see if it is a real mild, unhardened steel. The worse knife the better in that case. Keep up the good work!
The Dollar Tree does sell a $1.25 SAK style knife. It's so bad, the best thing I could do is watch it get ran over in the street. The test may just press a hole through the blade.
@@tikofthetoka5650 This is precisely what I would like to see, what would really happen, but very good point:) It would be interesting if the HRC tester would bend the blade or something like that!
The Mora Garberg in Stainless vs Carbon. A lot of discussion about the toughness of 14C28N vs 1095 floats around and one of the key components is what HRC they're hardened to. I've seen people claim 14C28N is 5 times tougher than 1095, a claim I find ridiculous
