I grew up in a very “diet” orientated family. DR.MIKE actually helped me put a perspective on “actual” healthy lifestyles and how one should eat to maintain healthy eating habits !
the part at 9:00 where dr Mike freaks out about how his patients comes in with insomnia and depression literarily brought me to tears because it is exactly what I'm going through. I hate all these "diy" advices soo much, it helps no one
it's seriously so true, it only hurts. I've had insomnia since I was like 5 (due to nightmares at that time) and it was always something that people had all these tricks for falling asleep easy, but I could never fall asleep and it was absolutely crushing
Lack of sleep a lead to severe depression. Something you can't just "get over". Turned out, I had sleep apnea, which didn't help. I recently started using 2mg of Melatonin which seems to help me fall asleep and feel sleepy.
The misinformation is also infuriating in other conditions. Like telling me my mom with terminal breast cancer should really try soursop juice or baking soda. Like anything like that is remotely going to make a difference at that point, if it ever would have.
What upsets me the most is when people actually take the so-called "advice" and think that it's a cure all. And like Dr.Mike said, when people find out it doesn't work, especially patients who have been suffering because of their condition, it makes them feel even worse about themselves. So the "advice" isn't always harmless. I wish the internet could ban these types of videos.
something annoying for me is when people say to just drink tap water, because where i live the tap water is DISGOSTING, you cant see them but its filled with germs
The food you eat directly impacts how you feel and show up in the world. Even if it doesn't lead to disease, if the food you eat isn't healthy and nutritious, you won't feel your best👍
"bro why do you eat fries before your burger?" the actual answer is: fries only taste worse the colder they get, so you eat the fries first cause your burger's gonna taste fine a little bit colder and it's gonna cool down a bit slower anyway
I always keep them in the bag but close off the bag so the steam doesn’t escape and the fries stay warm. Seems to work but mostly on freshly made fries
The fact that manuka honey is antibacterial shows that we doctors use "natural" medicines too - although many of the medicines we use are derived or inspired by natural sources!
but they only use them if they have been proven to work. honey has very little water in it, so it when put on a wound it helps draw the water out, killing the bacteria. its also quite acidic as well and some types can also make form hydrogen peroxide, when diluted apparently
You should have Matt Stonie on to talk about how competitive eaters actually eat normally. I’ve always wondered how people competitively eat in a “healthy” manner, and if it involves working out, a specific diet, something else, or even just a combination of any of those.
A few pro eaters that I follow seem to have a healthy lifestyle outside of their extreme hobby/profession. Furious Pete, BeardMeatsFood, and Leah Shutkever all have very clean diets and exercise/workout regularly. When it comes time to do the challenge or competition (Pete doesn't compete anymore, and doesn't really do these challenges anymore either) they fast and restrict their diets leading up to it. The pro eaters that I follow don't have regular bad eating habits and that helps them stay relatively healthy. Obviously can't speak for all of them though.
At this point I feel like we need a 5 hour long compilation of Dr. Mike absolutely losing his mind over misinformation. Edit: Holy $hit, this blew up like crazy! 😳
I’m really thankful that you addressed how dangerous it is to make random promises. I have a nightmare disorder, and people always assume I just need to take melatonin or get more sunlight, as if I haven’t tried everything, including every random hack on the internet.
@Yashika Kolli "Nightmare disorder is referred to by doctors as a parasomnia - a type of sleep disorder that involves undesirable experiences that occur while you're falling asleep, during sleep or when you're waking up."
I had something similar where I would have nightmares everyday but after 2 years it got better and now instead of only having 1 or 2 decent dreams a year I now get about 90-100 every year I still get more nightmares than good but it's improving so I'm happy. I think what caused it was my dad passing away because it would always be about my dad
Your response to the magnesium “life hack”….THANK YOU, Dr. Mike. I cried hearing a doctor have their patients back in regards to their health and life struggles. I personally have struggled with insomnia for years now and nothing helped until I seeked our medical treatment. THANK YOU, DR. MIKE
@eioshen boboi Lots of people positively benefit from taking magnesium. I've read many testimonies as well as experienced it myself just with small applications of transdermal magnesium, which is significantly more bioavailable than pills. However,I acknowledge that not everyone responds the same and would never make any false promises. I believe this would apply to any doctor, though... Be it a naturopath or conventional doctor.
@@HoHhoch Was just having a discussion about this with someone.. Not even doctors get it right 100% of the time. From what I understand they’re not very well versed when it comes to nutrition. The example i gave the other person was that of the infamous food pyramid. Point is, due diligence is important whether receiving information from people’s experiences or even a doctor.

The codine conversation unlocked a memory. I had a skin reaction to something (basically just very itchy), and they prescribed me a NARCOTIC. It just knocked me out. Like, "can't complain about itching if you're not conscious." I still don't understand why that was their solution.
I'm guessing what you were prescribed was an antihistamine. Histamine is naturally produced in the body and has two very different functions at the same time: it promotes itchiness in the skin and wakefulness in the brain. Antihistamines are drugs that antagonise the effects of histamine. So when you take an antihistamine to dampen down histamine function in the skin, some of this antihistamine ends up in the brain and has the unintended effect of causing drowsiness
It's pretty charming how this guy knows so much and comes in well prepared with medical facts and has well produced videos, but still has occasional bouts with bilingualism. More power Dr. Mike. Also, it's crazy how easily alcohol can diffuse. I was online drinking once with friends and probably because I got so wasted, I didn't seal the bottle of rhum properly. It was cheap local Tanduay rhum. Two weeks later when we were about to go drinking again I found that my rhum had reduced, tasted differently, and no longer had a kick to it.

"When kids say they dont like water" if a human being has some sort of negative reaction towards the liquid the human needs to drink to survive then thats kind of not a reason to add whipped cream and olive oil in it
If: 1) Your water is fairly clean or filtered and 2) kids still don't want to drink it then 3) think about adding a little fruit juice, or sugar-free drink mix (like Crystal Light), or making tea with it. - I have met some adults who hate the taste of water, and adding something to flavor it has improved their hydration.
This sounds a lot like this weird "waterTok" trend that's been going around. People are basically turning their water into syrup/liquid candy. Yes, some of the recipes are sugar free but I can't help but wonder at what point we stop calling the stuff "water".

"Panther" is not a separate species. It is simply the genus name where these animals below are placed: Lions, tigers, jaguars, leopards, and snow leopards. Calling any of these "panthers" would technically be correct according to their genus name, which is panthera. Cougars, cheetahs, lynx, domestic cat, etc. belong in the genus felindae; therefore, calling a cougar a panther is not correct.
Canadians refer to that type of "kitty" as a mountain cat. That's our term for the cats where "we've moved too close to their territory so they're taking it back".
Very close, but not quite: Cats (Felidae) are separated into two subfamilies: Pantherinae and Felinae. The Pantherinae ("big cats") consist of the genera Neofelis (clouded leopards) and Panthera (the five true big cat species as you mentioned). All other cats are Felinae ("small cats"). But there's several genera within Felinae, for example: Felis (domestic cats and wild cats), Acinonyx (cheetah), Lynx (lynxes), Puma (cougar), Leopardus (ocelot, margay).
oh also when people say "panther" they are referring to melanistic (black) leopards or jaguars, but typically jaguars because the trait is recessive in leopards but dominant in jaguars

I love how simple Dr. Mike makes health info! It's really not that complicated, there's just no shortcuts. Also, as a biologist, I will hopefully help you feel better about your cat ID. Panther, cougar, puma, mountain lion, they are all correct!! They all refer to the same species. It's the big cat with the largest demographic range covering most of North, Central, AND South America so it's not surprising it has so many names :)
I google the difference between panther and cougar then ctrl+c ctrl+v Difference Between Cougar and Panther Cougar is always a defined and identified particular species, while a panther could be any of the big cats. Cougar does not have a larynx and hyoid structures to produce horrifying roars, but panthers could produce roars. Cougar is a new world species, while panther is both a new world and old world species.
You are correct! The common name panther comes from the genus name Panthera, which belongs to the true big cats which can roar, like Panthera leo and Panthera tigris (lions and tigers). Confusion comes from common names just being how people describe what they are talking about. Most common names come from when we grouped animals based on their looks (morphology) rather than genetics/ancestry. Cougars do look pretty similar to lions, so it makes sense they ended up with a similar common name. Genetically, they are different enough that we gave them a different genus name, Puma. This is why we have the system for scientifically naming creatures, so we can discuss with accuracy, even across many languages. I love how many people are curious or interested! Hope this helps.

My Mum had a theory, for my older sister she sanitised EVERYTHING when she was a baby. By the time I was born, well let's just say it was clean but not hospital grade sanitised lol. My sister had a bunch of skin conditions and allergies, I had nothing, and she believes it was because for me everything wasn't sterile so my body was able to build immunities.
Hello Ailias, I develop eczema and my mom cleaned everything hospital grade due to the risk of asthma. I did not developed asthma but my immune system is weakened. Doctors recommend clean environment for the children allowing the interaction with different potential allergic molecules (kids that grow up with pets are less likely to develop fur allergies). However, in the case of diseases like eczema, everything should be sterile because we lack defenses. So, it actually depends on the baby's health condition.
My parents didn’t do this and I had eczema pretty much from day one. Seems to be more a hereditary thing in my family. Didn’t get allergies till I was 21. Sometimes it just happens
You can look into hygiene theory, its very interesting. I also did a paper in school about food allergies and the time they were introduced into the kids diets. For some allergens, such as peanuts, the earlier you give it to your child, the less risk of allergy to peanuts. Its super interesting because parents have become really worried about peanut allergies so they often times wait to introduce those foods but we actually have seen rates of allergies increase. We want to protect our kids from everything but the reality is that is likely doing more harm.
Love this!! Especially when you talked about insomnia. I thought I had it, but I just took things and did things from what I read on the internet, from searching all over the place. None of them harmed me, but nothing worked. I finally talked to my doctor about it, and she prescribed me some medication to take when needed. It works great, but I only take it if I go to bed early enough. I have a problem getting to sleep. Once I'm asleep, I'm good. I stay up at night overthinking about everything, so that gives me anxiety and depression. I'm glad I have a doctor that cares, and I'm glad you care!! Thanks for giving us accurate information as always, and debunking these crazy videos!
Damn, I wish more doctors had this level of respect for patients. Dr. Mike gets defensive over lies about better sleep. I gained 13kg within 3 months due to meds, I was always slim before that. My gynaecologist told me to do exercise and not reward myself with an apple afterwards. I changed to a different gynaecologist. Respect is so important. Oh, and another doctor told me that my knee pain was because of those 13kg. Turns out I have arthritis.
Thank you for the clarification about pH. People need to hear that - especially ones in various "deacidification cults"! (It's a big thing in Europe, don't know in US - maybe wouldn't be a bad idea if you made a whole video on this topic (or have you already?))
And regarding eating raw meat: it's not only bacteria, it's also various parasites and toxins. Do you want trichine or fly larvae to eat their way to your brain and live there? (I know that with normal inspection done on the meat that is less possible, but it is still).
This video is the first time I've ever heard about people being concerned about the pH of their water. There are several reasons why you might want to filter your tap water, to make it safer to drink, (especially in certain countries,) but the pH thing feels pretty silly.
Also thank you for the alkaline water rant. Once had a coworker tell me I could cure acid reflux by drinking water with lemon juice in it, because it would make my body alkaline. The fact that we were at WORK and the boss was right there (and a big fan of pseudo-woo himself) was the only reason she didn't get schooled.
I've heard that about pickle juice but I don't think I ever bought it. I love lemon water but only because it tastes good. I got even more into it when I was pregnant because it helped with nausea for some reason and asked for a bunch of lemon slices in my water at a restaurant. The waitress (who was also pregnant) nodded understandingly and brought me a whole plate of them LOL.

the part at 9:00 where dr Mike freaks out about how his patients comes in with insomnia and depression literarily brought me to tears because it is exactly what I'm going through. I hate all these "diy" advices soo much, it helps no one
seriously all it gives you is false hope and thats just sad
it's seriously so true, it only hurts. I've had insomnia since I was like 5 (due to nightmares at that time) and it was always something that people had all these tricks for falling asleep easy, but I could never fall asleep and it was absolutely crushing
it doesnt always work, so i promise nothing but asmr helps at the very least on some days. some days nothing works and i just stay up all night
As a person who once suffered insomnia, it really does hurt. The world feels smaller, and you feel overwhelmed, and literally feel afraid to sleep.
You 2023
What upsets me the most is when people actually take the so-called "advice" and think that it's a cure all. And like Dr.Mike said, when people find out it doesn't work, especially patients who have been suffering because of their condition, it makes them feel even worse about themselves. So the "advice" isn't always harmless. I wish the internet could ban these types of videos.

The fact that manuka honey is antibacterial shows that we doctors use "natural" medicines too - although many of the medicines we use are derived or inspired by natural sources!

honey has very little water in it, so it when put on a wound it helps draw the water out, killing the bacteria.

"Panther" is not a separate species. It is simply the genus name where these animals below are placed:
Lions, tigers, jaguars, leopards, and snow leopards. Calling any of these "panthers" would technically be correct according to their genus name, which is panthera. Cougars, cheetahs, lynx, domestic cat, etc. belong in the genus felindae; therefore, calling a cougar a panther is not correct.
I jUsT cAlL tHeM aLl “KaTs”
Canadians refer to that type of "kitty" as a mountain cat. That's our term for the cats where "we've moved too close to their territory so they're taking it back".
Very close, but not quite:
Cats (Felidae) are separated into two subfamilies: Pantherinae and Felinae.
Cougars and pumas are the same thing tho, right?

Your insomnia rant made me feel validated, I've suffered depression and Insomnia since I was a kid (seriously, no joke). My insomnia is currently getting worse, I think I need to buy a new bed this time though, so I am going to as soon as I can. it really does have me in tears many days, it's literally caused a chain reaction that ultimately made my mental and physical health suffer A LOT! These a-holes making promises like that with no actual evidence to back up their claims, with no regards to those they are negatively affecting with their false claims, they have no idea what this feels like. Also, as a biologist, I will hopefully help you feel better about your cat ID. Panther, cougar, puma, mountain lion, they are all correct!! They all refer to the same species. What? 😳 they’re all the same?
@@anniemayfield4589 yea
I google the difference between panther and cougar then ctrl+c ctrl+v
Difference Between Cougar and Panther
Cougar is always a defined and identified particular species, while a panther could be any of the big cats.

Hello 👋 Ailias, how are you enjoying your wonderful weather this morning?
It’s actually something that is being researched right now and there is much evidence to support it!
Your “evaporated” moment is me every day while teaching! 🤣 Hand movements and all!
2:24 tbh nikocado played us like a fiddle
Damn, I wish more doctors had this level of respect for patients. Dr. Mike gets defensive over lies about better sleep. I had a doctor promise they would remove my medical device b/c I am an adult and can make those choices.. he lied.. then left the office after giving me a medication that increased depressive thoughts. *thumbs up*
I gained 13kg within 3 months due to meds, I was always slim before that.
In a way she was right. A small amount of lemon juice in warm water can be alkalize when digested
I've heard that about pickle juice but I don't think I ever bought it. I love lemon water but only because it tastes good. I got even more into it when I was pregnant because it helped with nausea for some reason and asked for a bunch of lemon slices in my water at a restaurant. The waitress (who was also pregnant) nodded understandingly and brought me a whole plate of them LOL.
human intelligence always blows my mind

I really appreciate the disdain for alkaline water. I use to work in a chiropractic office, and one thing he sold was giant glass jugs of alkaline water. And it was expensive. I couldn't understand WHY people would by this water, when they have much cheaper water at home.
My mom was convinced for a while that alkaline water was the only water that wouldn’t make her sick as she recently went into stage 4 kidney failure. Don’t know what happened to change her mind about that but now she’s completely changed her diet and on an all doctors are trying to kill me kick
I would never buy super fancy alkaline water that's supposed to cure EVERYTHING that ails you, but we DO buy bottled water. The pipes aren't great in our house, and the tap water is hard anyway. We don't drink it. I CAN'T drink it, it literally nauseates me.
