The fight against coronavirus is global. But the guidelines on whether you should wear a face mask as part of that fight are often completely different from place to place. That means that, for a lot of people, whether you wear a face mask when you leave the house is basically up to you.
Here’s where almost every expert agrees: If you have Covid-19, and you leave the house, you should wear a mask. Masks help keep sick people from spreading their germs. Most of the uncertainty around mask use is related to a totally separate question: Whether masks can protect healthy people from getting Covid-19.
The truth is that no mask can actually guarantee that you won’t get sick; experts say one of the most dangerous assumptions about face masks is that they basically make you invincible. Masks have to be used correctly to offer any protection at all, and they’re most effective if used alongside other preventative measures like hand-washing and social distancing.
But experts also say that the question of whether healthy people should wear masks is a lot easier to answer when you consider one of Covid-19’s most dangerous characteristics: Because of the disease’s long incubation period, and the high occurrence of infected people who never feel symptoms at all, it’s almost impossible to be completely sure that you don’t already have it. And that means the safest course of action is ultimately for everyone to behave like a sick person; in other words, to wear a mask.

Is there an increased risk of severe illness and death from masks that cause an exponential viral load in the lungs specifically because they "keep the virus in" as you have suggested? You showed an N95 with a valve, but doesn't the valve allow virus to spread unfiltered if the wearer has COVID? Isn't your failure to provide adequate instructions on mask use a promotion of a defective product with attendant liabilities for the harm inflicted from improper use?

Why did you (Vox) spend so long saying people don't need to wear masks, and take so long to start publicising the actual truth with this video. Were you trying to help the spread in an ill judged attempt to promote herd immunity? Why did you go agaisnt medical advice and tell your readers that they don't need to wear masks?

As an international student from Asia living in Canada, I am so shocked when people would ask me y we wear face masks so often, n there's not a straight answer. We wear them when we r sick, so other won't get sick, we wear them when were not feeling ourselves n want to hide behind a mask, we wear them to shield from the air pollution etc, there's simply no harm in wearing them. we have been educated since young that wearing a mask is beneficial, while people in the West r freaking out over wearing a mask.

The internet makes it possible for anyone to be a star, and expert on just about anything and the potential to reach a massive audeoince. Our communication technology is wonderful and its making the once impossible possible but it also has a dark side. It enable countless numbers of people access to a potentially unlimited audience without any vetting or worse to be denied access to any audience by gatekeepers with a political agenda (FB, Twitter, Google).

What l want to know I s why are politicians interfering with what doctors can and can't prescribe. If the option is death why cant can't patients and doctors decide what treatments they are happy to try.
If 99.7 percent of us will survive this unscathed doesn't it makes sense to allow us to make the choice of exposure and developing immunity naturally. All those 3 treatments available can also be used as prevention too.
Vaccines ARE NOT cures! If they were none of the people who have the flu Vax would get the flu. Flu cases and flu deaths increase every year as does the amount of people having the vaccine. However miraculously there have been no cases of flu since they started obsessing with COVID swabs, it seems influenza cases may have been relabelled???

Back to January, my mom called me from China, and asked me to wear mask. I told her that the Canada government officials told the public to not wear a mask. Well, she was absolutely right.

Not that I would do this normally, but In their defensive, hospitals in Canada are in need of surgical masks and other medical supplies. If the public can practice safe social distancing practices, then keeping all the most of the supplies to prevent the spreads makes sense. That’s just my opinion.

It's the home-made masks that are less effective. The PPE that doctors and nurses normally wear are specially designed to be much more effective. The problem is that there's a shortage. So we wear home-made masks because if they're made well enough, they're a lot better than nothing.

they partially explained this in the video - masks are more crucial for doctors because of the number of people they will be coming into contact with. Regular people are far less likely to be coming into close contact with people if they maintain social distancing measures. Given that the general population are likely to use masks incorrectly, those two statements can exist together.

    • @tn15_
      @tn15_ 4 роки тому +19

Really more a mishap by not being clear about what they mean. At first they advised general public not to wear masks because masks were desperately needed by healthcare workers, and still are. Then they realized there is a social benefit to telling the public to wear cloth masks, even if they're hardly effective at physically filtering aerosols, because they act as a reminder to maintain distance and keep clean.

Hygiene standards over there was much better too, you won't find a single piece of garbage on the ground in Shibuya. I think people in the U.S. need to set their standards higher when it comes to overall hygiene.

Use of masks by healthcare workers (HCWs) and non-healthcare workers (Non-HCWs) can reduce the risk of respiratory virus infection by 80% (OR = 0.20, 95% CI = 0.11-0.37) and 47% (OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.36-0.79). The protective effect of wearing masks in Asia (OR = 0.31) appeared to be higher than that of Western countries (OR = 0.45). Masks had a protective effect against influenza viruses (OR = 0.55), SARS (OR = 0.26), and SARS-CoV-2 (OR = 0.04). In the subgroups based on different study designs, protective effects of wearing mask were significant in cluster randomized trials and observational studies.

The problem of affect in political terms is a contagious one: fear spreads among the public, leading to intensification of risk management - the classic example being 9/11 and the war on terrorism. Fear of infective risk spreading communicably becomes an ironic pun. Pandemics occurred in 1918, 1957, 1968, 2003 and 2009. The video incorrectly states that all experts agree that masks stop viruses from getting through. And it's common sense that the velocity of particles are slowed when confronted with a barier but this doesn't take into account any air flow that spreads the particles much further then their velocity takes them. Also, unless a mask is test fitted more air goes around the mask than through it. Again, common sense, the air will follow the path of least resistance so unfiltered air comes out through the sides of the mask. BTW, the masks with a vent in the front protect no one as unfiltered air is pushed through the vent to ease the exhalation pressure.

25% of covid patients don't show symptoms and in an ideal world, everyone would wear masks. However, back when covid patients were relatively rare, they would be concentrated at hospitals. Recommending that everyone wear facemasks would create more panick buying, which would deplete hospital PPE supplies and put whole communities at risk. Now that the pandemic is out of control and hospitals have secured better pipelines for getting PPE, news outlets are recommending everyone wear PPE.

What I find interesting is that before face masks were mandated, there were many health directors and personnel talking about the negative health effects, and potential unintended behavioral impacts of community-wide mask ordinances that might INCREASE one’s risk of infection, and they were stating this as their primary reason against issuing mandates. Then the mandates were issued and now nobody is talking about harms, potential consequences, or any other negative effects. And you have countless people believing there is absolutely no risk to prolonged use of face masks.
Unfortunately, there are many and a lot of ppl have been misinformed and believe that the mask either benefits you or does nothing. That’s simply not the case.

Vox - did you change the title again? I swear when I saw it earlier it was something like - why you need to wear masks - or am I imagining things?

Yes it's written in the description, the precious one was : Why you should wear a face mask to fight coronavirus?
They've been doing that a lot lately, and I think that's for youtube referencement

@Bob Smith. You show you ignorance. Science works by continuously evaluating and improving knowledge. And yes, this means they lay be wrong at first and then improve. If you want unchangeable "truth" go read your Bible. See how far that has brought us.

1uciano Lot of heroes out there today. What people think of as run of the mill jobs have turned into brave endeavors. And Firemen and Medics that potentially face extreme danger every single work shift of their career are now facing even more danger. Along with the police and military they are the true heroes of America! God bless them all and thank you for your service!

"Masks have to be used correctly to offer any protection at all". I have seen this being used against wearing masks. IMO the correct conclusion should be everyone needs to be TAUGHT to use mask correctly.

A few questions. How long can respiratory particles stay airborn? What happens when viral particles attach themselves to a warm moist mask on a persons face? Why isn't eye protection encouraged in the same way masks are?

Most importantly people should understand that masks are meant to protect others from you if you are sick and not to prevent you from getting sick.

They are not miracles, but they do help with controlling COVID.
Even if they didn't prevent you from getting ill, they would still prevent you from spreading those germs.
