- How effective are your face masks? Months into the coronavirus pandemic there are still no standards or regulations for consumer masks. So we asked the University of Toronto to test more than 20 different masks. We reveal which are the most effective at keeping you safe from COVID-19, and which masks you should avoid.

Why arent companies required to make masks that will actually be effective in keeping us safe.
Because it's all a scam and masks actually make matters worse long term. N99 or nothing which no one is wearing.
I think a lot of the manufacturers are outside of Canada, like China and that becomes hard to regulate.
There are surgical mask standards, BFE, PFE, VFE, they have to be 95% or better for the mask to be effective. In North America, the surgical mask must comply with standards ASTM Level 1 to be effective to filter off the virus......google it
@@jialiblob it hard to regulate if you just ban all incoming products. Let’s keep supporting the rich and the ruthless.
It would be legally dangerous for them to make any medical claims, so they all explicitly make no medical claims. Usually they make claims that there's no medical value. That's why most are labelled as a "fashion mask."
There's no market reward for making a better mask.
Got to admit, since wearing mask, I didn’t even get any common cough or flu .
I contracted three cases of strep throat before my 17th birthday. Covid aside, I'm all in for mask culture, esp, fall/winter.
agreed
@Dunnit Again you may not want them, but they have become an essential ppe. Now if you don’t want to wear one then don’t, but if you contract COVID-19 then you have no room to complain about contracting the virus.
@Dunnit Again lol or I could stay here and wear my mask, your freedom to not wear one is my freedom to wear one.
@Dunnit Again try getting covid and spread it towards children and old people, then be indirectly responsible for deaths of dozens vulnerable people

I've been in the medical field for over 22 years. I was diagnosed with TB. I was shocked. I did what the doctor told me to do, I took some medication & a Chest X-ray earlier on during my career. I worked tirelessly to help our patients combat the H1N1 influenza virus pandemic. So here comes the COVID-19 pandemic. In my opinion concerning these types of viruses, I treat them as their in the same family. I trust only N95 😷

I would have liked to have seen all the masks lined up with a rating.
They only meant confuse you , not inform you. It's a tv SHOW.
There are literally hundreds (maybe thousands) of masks, and they only tested a few loosely representative samples of the various types available. The purpose was not to rate this tiny random sample of masks, but to give general guidelines that are applicable in evaluating all other masks you might come across. This evaluation is something wee need to do ourselves.
If you click the link after "read more" in the video description, it takes you to the article where they group them into top performers, good performers, worst, etc. It doesn't go into as much detail as I'd like but does offer a bit more than the video.
@@gigalbytegal Yes! Thank you!
I actually did read an article that ranked some masks from best to worst. Basically, N95 masks were the best, and right below that were the typical blue and white surgical masks that most people are wearing now, and then it ranked a few different types of cloth masks. Surprisingly, some of the cloth masks were actually worse than not wearing a mask at all, as it would simply cause the respiratory particles to be smaller rather than blocking them.
If you look closely at alot of the packaging on masks, they will often say "does not protect against COVID"

With masks being so popular right now I think it is important that everyone understand the general WSPS standard for mask use: Masks (even n95s) are the least effective way to control aerosol hazards in this case the coronavirus. Social distancing or "elimination" of the threat is still the most effective way of controlling environmental aerosol hazards and everyone should be focusing on that. Try and conduct business or events outdoors and isolate your contacts as best as you can. If you are a business owner that would mean trying to focus on curbside pick up rather than in store visits.

It would have been nice had they shared how effective they were, like the gator was 5%, where as the blue surgical was 40%.
@mr fantastic because they vary wildly as low as 10 and potentially as high has 40%. But even 40% is not going to help a whole lot. That is why 2 and or 3 together were recommended early part of the year. I for one am looking for natural immunity, especially with all the new info coming out about how much better that is.

I don’t understand why everything in the news talks about new studies and as though we are just learning about filtration and PPE. I was a construction inspector From 1987 until the late 1990s and had to be certified in asbestos along with several other areas regarding contaminates, PPE, filtration, etc. at times, working with OSHA inspectors. We are already well-versed and have had all the knowledge we need and have so for a very, very long time. The only variable that we really needed to know was what size the virus was and we learned that almost from the get go.This is so disturbing for several reasons. I started making masks as soon as I could get my hands on all of the materials necessary I knew exactly what they needed to be made out of to equal in and N95. I still don’t understand why it was always put out there that masks are to protect everyone else. They absolutely protect yourself, as well. There was no question that we all should’ve been wearing masks immediately when this came out. Again… All very disturbing.

@@NipplesOfDestiny I sincerely apologize for my late reply. YES... ultimately you’re looking to find an N 95 level mask. You truly can make one that is pretty close to it. The seal and fit of any mask is hugely important and your friend is correct.... but that is only part of having the protection you need in a mask. Also, I have used 3M products for many years and many different applications. Everything they make is high-quality and we’ll trusted. I always used their products quite frequently when I used to paint cars, as well! When I first started making masks right after the virus began, it was extremely difficult to find materials and 3M double stick surgical grade tape was one of the items that took me forever to get hold of as everyone was scrambling for these materials. It is not necessary to use double stick tape, but it absolutely makes a difference. It needs to be tested on a persons skin, because it can be irritating. You can certainly wear a mask without using the double-sided tape as a seal, but it just makes the fit that much more important. I’m referring more so to homemade masks. You can make a homemade mask and get very close to an N95 level which is ultimately what you’re looking for with this particular virus and it’s size. There are a few different filters that you can use in between two pieces of cotton in order to make this mask. Polypropylene is one of them. You can also use HEPA filters that you can find made for certain vacuum cleaners. Some filters aren’t washable and need to be put into a pocket, then removed/ replaced when washing the mask. There are several options and variables when making your own mask… But it truly is not as complicated as it sounds. Again, I apologize for my late reply.❤️
@Tom Wolfer There is not a biological or chemical relevance with the virus as far as filtration. Fortunately, it is simply having a filtration system small enough to catch the virus so as not to inhale it.
@@marynancy1187 I’ve seen several counterfeit, absolute crap respirators being sold as N95s....Disgusting and unconscionable.
@Tom Wolfer I wouldn’t put any of this out there unless I was certain about what I was saying. Obviously… Too important. However… You could probably help me out with football! I played almost every sport and the one time I tried to play football, I got my nose broken and I still don’t understand the game… but I never had much interest in it and didn’t pay that much attention, in the first place! It does leave you out of conversations at times!🤣❤️

Are you being sarcastic? This clip is from the TV show Marketplace, which is why it's in the title.
marketplace is a tv show.
@@nelle5339 TV show or UA-cam video. Doesn't matter. It's a program telling you to buy something but not telling you anything you need to know to buy it. Those are the mask that I wear for work and it’s cool how it works
Any Brand suggestions for this kind??
I think I will use the ones the Strippers wear! They deal with many moist environments!
On the valve masks, you can close the vents. It's nice to open them when your not in close proximity of others but still want a mask on.
This is helpful. In my experience, getting a tight and then consistent fit below my glasses is really challenging. What no one seems to address, is how difficult/comfortable it is to inhale when using a mask. If the breathability is terrible, chances are it won't be used properly.
I don’t know when you did your testing, but I have the one with the vent on the side and I find it protects better than other one I had before because it has 3 layers creating a pocket for a PM 2.5 filter which entirely covers the vent. If that isn’t safe, I don’t know what is. I wear a mask, to protect others, but mostly to protect myself.
I have been wearing the same type masks! I prefer them to others. And I also wear mine to protect myself!
@prs2410 I wouldn’t be wearing it if the valve wasn’t covered. I, in fact, had bought one but returned because, even though it had a disk that went in the valve area, I did not feel protected because the disk moved. As for the one I have now, the filter goes completely over and beyond the valve.
Yeah a 100% cotton mask with a filter pocket for the PM 2.5 filter is the best and most comfortable option.
Thank you CBC for bringing this up and providing awareness about the quality and the standards that products manufacturers offer.
The best mask is not going to the mall and touching everything. Then going out on the street to talk to unmasked people about it.

Outdoor Survival Canada, 3 layer masks with 3m filter material. As a taxi driver that has tested all these masks and more, this is the best mask with the best fit I have found so far. They also come in 3 sizes.
One major flaw I see in the testing is they didn't test which ones are better for the wearer. The testing seem to be done on aerosol emission rather then aerosol inhalation.
The best masks, N95, are spec designed to block particles as small as .3 microns. SARS CoV2 virus particles are .1 microns. Curious how you didn't mention that... bogus. A chain link fence won't stop mosquitoes from entering your yard either.

If you wear a valve mask and put a bandana over the top doubled up that works very well at reducing the flow of what comes out, the valve allows you to breath out, the bandana slows your breath so you get the best of both worlds, if you use a Hepa outer layer that stops anything getting in.
I do this and wash the bandana after use, the Hepa protects you, the bandana protects others the valves help you breath easy, so long as you don't breath directly on the Hepa and only use it as an outer layer it's all good.

Thank you CBC Marketplace. The information is actually good and valuable. This is my first time to leave a positive comment on CBC. And while I was watching, I was thinking what's up with Kamala Harries hosting a Canadian tv program. Maybe I watched too much of American politics.
I work with the public and come in contact with hundreds of people a day, and I have seen literally every type of mask. The truth is that _maybe_ half of the people I see are wearing their masks correctly. The cloth masks referred to as "contour masks" are almost never covering both the person's nose and chin adequately because everyone's face is a different size and shape. But it seems like retail stores predominantly sell these 'one size' contour masks and it is incredibly frustrating. Companies profiting off of mask sales should have a responsibility to ensure that their product meets government guidelines and doesn't constitute a risk to the public. I think the average person does want to wear a mask that works but at the end of the day is going to buy whatever is easy to find. However, try telling a stranger that their mask doesn't fit them (it's like Russian roulette).

ppl wore masks way before then solely for that reason; black surgical masks were all the rage around here in asia esp in 2014-2018. i've also used masks since 2015 since my immune system is known to be weaker and i could catch some sicknesses that other might not normally got, wearing a mask just helps protect people around me
How convenient for bank robbers, though. Just a thought.
@@rosehip5101 it's 2021 and u still believe there's no Covid. sure buddy, not like friends of mine have lost their sense of taste and not like a friend's relative died from it. sure buddy, sure.
@@s_d_1200 nothing unusual about people losing their sense of taste when they get cold and flu like symptoms. It always has been like that. we know that the doctors have been calling lots of deaths covid but it is not evidence that there is such a thing. you might aswell cite a flat earther said so as evidence the earth is flat.
@@s_d_1200 just ignore him...you will get infected by his/her illness
Idiocy
I wear a KN95 mask underneath a fabric mask to keep the KN95 clean and to make it last longer. I quarantine masks for a couple of days after each use. Is that simple. I have a little asthma so the masks actually make me breathe slower and better.
Usually, KN95 or other medical masks are for single use. The longer time you using the same mask, the less effective it will be. The quarantine dose nothing except air dry your saliva. So please change your masks as often as you can.
@@chinanhuang4870They normally have a number of hours you can use them for before disposal. I wouldn't throw one out after only using it for 10min.
Is this a joke? You wear two masks, quarantine them, and claim they help you breathe better?
I reuse the blue disposable ones to save $. Sometimes when they get wet I just put paper towels in them. Kinda harder to breathe but I don’t talk much.
Thank you unit know I did not understand why optics are foggy
I think all the surgical masks have this problem. I sew at home 2 layers cotton and one layer of polyester. No fog and nicely fitted.
Please do one on copper masks.
How about a mask made of rubber? That would really keep everything out, and keep anything from getting in.
(For those still asleep, this is what you call sarcasm!)
F it, ill just put a bag over my head (with no holes)....

Nah,
I'm just going to wrap my head in saran wrap. That will do the trick, it's much cheaper than rubber. 🤪
@@NickanM oh i remember that, there was a diy mask that required saran wrap
lol
Thank you
When they were testing the mask with the purge valve, They never commented on PM 2.5 filter was there no filter in the mask or was there? this seems to be an incomplete test on valve masks.
not that great of a test, so basic ,
Valve masks only protect in one direction
@@granmabern5283 My mask has a complete filter inside, air has to go though the filter in or out, The valve allows the heated air to escape a little faster, But the air is still filtered, one of these masks without the filter it would not be any good, I guess if I saw another person with a valve mask I would be wondering if they have a filter inside their mask !
I think you missed a point - hydrophobic properties
I really like this reporter's stories! Keep going!
