The US tested the wrong people for coronavirus

As the rate of new coronavirus cases in the US slows down, many states and cities there are encouraging businesses to open again, easing the lockdowns that have been in place since March. But public health experts warn that in many of those places, opening up is premature.
The reason is that throughout the US, as well as in many other countries, we still don’t really know how many people have the virus, or where they are. That’s dangerous because it means infected people who don’t feel sick are probably mingling with the rest of the population, which could enable further outbreaks. And the only way to really prevent that is by proactively testing people for covid-19 until the people who have it have been tracked down and isolated.
The US started testing its population for covid-19 very slowly, but it’s since ramped testing up, and by early May was performing over 200,000 tests a day. Unfortunately, there’s no magic number of tests that is “enough” to contain an outbreak. The important thing is to test the right people - and to evaluate whether that’s happening, public health officials recommend looking at a different number: The percentage of tests coming back positive. It’s called the test positivity rate.

My sister caught it, and they refused to test her until she was so sick that she checked into the ER. A week later state officials were bragging how they had more tests available than patients to test. That sums this whole thing up.
Wow that’s incredible, I hope your sister is feeling better now.
Its simple if they had treated her at the earlier stage she would have healed and they won't have a chance to add a death statistic to their narrative.
🥺🙏 i hope your sister get better
I work in a hospital. Now i'm no doctor nor nurse, but I like to pay attention and have discussions with these front line workers. When it started, it seemed they had no idea how to cure the virus, and that all they can do is treat the symptoms. So before they learned more about the virus, if someone is feeling okay, there is no benefit to having a positive test result in terms of treatment. Once patients had symptoms, they can then test to at least figure out if they need to treat the virus, or find another underlying cause. I think that was the motive behind their actions.
Nevertheless, I'm sorry about your sister. The circumstances were and are very unfortunate. I really hope she is recovering well!

Raw Master, Newsweek article said Fauci (whatever) funded a lab in Wuhan to enhance a bat coronavirus to jump to humans. They say it isn't manmade. AND YOU BELIEVE THEM????? smh
Raw Master False. In the 2018-2019 flu season, flu killed around 34,200 people in the US according to the CDC. The CDC estimates that covid 19 has killed more than double that. Keep in mind that the flu had a whole year to reach 34,200 people, whereas covid 19 only just started ramping up earlier this year, around March, in the US. So you decide which one is more deadly: 34,200 deaths in the US over the course of a year, or around 73,639 deaths in the US over the course of 3 months.
Maybe when a vaccine comes out, the number of deaths will be about the same, but that will take time.
To me this sounds like it is a luxury to be tested..
People are better off not being tested. It's a setup.

Yup, funny how many celebrities have been getting the test but ordinary people? Not so much.
It is. The only reason I got tested was because my mom is friends with my primary doctor and was able to get her to approve testing even though I didn’t REALLY need it. Can’t imagine how difficult it is who doesn’t have connections
The virus is inside of the test.
Everyone should qualify for a test, no matter who they are. Denying people for testing completely diminishes the point of testing people in the first place.
I agree. There's been a massive spread of the virus where my father works, because half of the people (who had no symptoms) were denied testing.
the ''point'' is to keep the numbers as low as possible - thereby creating a false impression..it's all about appearance: how things LOOK, as opposed to how they really are........
In theory, yes, but that's not possible if you don't have enough tests, which was the case early on. If you don't have enough tests then you need to use them most effectively. Unfortunately, it seems that that wasn't really done either. In the case of the guy who had significant COVID-like symptoms, assuming he has it is sound from the perspective that if he is isolated then he can't infect anyone anyway. Where it's not so sound is that, if he has something else, that's not going to be detected or treated.

that's not how it works, my job only allowed me to work from home once the politicians said the state is closed. so imagine all the people forced to go back into work once politicians give my boss and bosses across the us the excuse to.

Besides Random Testing and Contact Tracing I see a third option: Test possible spreaders (business travellers, waiters, nurses etc.) on a regular basis.
Monday2203 So you’re saying those who are most likely to be outside with the general public? That’s not a bad thought to be honest with you.
Brian OSullivan Being outside is not the point and not important for spreading. The daily number of people you interact with and the distance you "bridge" via travel are more important. You should test those, who are likely to carry the virus from one family or community to another.
Monday2203 I could see that though. Whether you know you have it or not, those who travel on a fairly regular basis should be a high focus for Antibody testing.
I like this. Retail workers get tested, for sure! Too, too many people on us.

German here, our testing protocols weren't perfect, either. For a long time, you could only get a test if you had been in one of the Covid hotspots yourself, or had come into contact with someone who had been there and showed symptoms. If you had Covid symptoms that weren't bad enough to go to hospital, but couldn't prove that you had contact with someone who had been tested positive, you couldn't get a test. I know a number of people who had that problem. One friend could only get a test through his company, which does those tests - and he tested positive.
Once we've got enough antibody tests out there, I'm expecting to hear from a lot more people who suspected they had Covid, but couldn't get a test. And now get the confirmation that their suspicion was correct.

I think it’s because California isn’t too densely populated. It’s a big state as well. New York is a small state with a high population, therefore they have more cases

Rosé’s half eaten candle I agree
Do not be fooled, many think 10 % is good, but with a larger population the spread can be faster if you let the guard down, so if 10 % is a limit for what is seen as "Okay", you shall try to aim for 5 % before seeing is as somewhat safe.

yes do, Australia's was near identical to America's, but they put country & lives first in this case
Did you look at the numbers? S. Korea has performed 800,000 tests to date. The apparent solution is to test more than that every day in the US which is a huge undertaking. Using the early May numbers the US would test more than all of A. Korea's tests in under 4 days. The US is a vastly larger country than Korea and requires a very different response.

Australia started out making the same mistakes as the US, they just got lucky. They also couldn't test people with symptoms cause they didn't have enough tests, so only health care workers, people who recently came from china and close contacts could be tested. People with symptoms were free to continue shopping and infecting others. Don't get me started on the ruby princess debarkle. While they were checking people coming in from China I was watching the outbreak in Italy. People drove on public transport to self quarantine. Later they got better at quarantine in hotels instead of self quarantine and driving people to the hotel. New Zealand did better than us. Having said all that, they did improve, many states and people in the US continue to underestimate this virus and do the wrong thing.
The states shutting down the borders really helped slow down the virus too

My boyfriend got sick with a respiratory illness in March and had a fever but because he didn’t have pneumonia he was told not to show up the hospital unless that developed and at the time my state was only testing hospitalized people. We live together and we’re positive that he had it and I was exposed. We did our best to not have any contact between the two of us at that time and I contacted my job to let them know my suspicions that I could be an asymptomatic carrier and they told me without a positive test I still had to come into work. I work in food service and while I did my best to be extra cautious about handwashing and sanitation I still feel guilty over the possibility that I could have passed it on.
I'd like to say that in Sydney, Australia the government was testing randomly. However, it was not the case. I got high fever in mid-March, and I couldn't get myself tested. I had private health insurance and tried to call my local clinic with no luck answering the phone. When I called Auburn public hospital and told them about my case, they told me to just self-isolate. Apparently, they had instructions to test only who had most of the corona symptoms. In my opinion, what had the virus to be controlled in Australia is the cooperation of the people with restrictions. No one has gone to the streets the day the government announced the restrictions.

5:57 that's what Hong Kong has been doing since day 1.. at first it sounded overwhelming and strike me as a little awkward as the patients were asked where they had been and whom they had contact with... even the hotel front desk staff who served the patient before he got confirmed had to be isolated and tested. After reading these comments and many of the other ones around the US regarding this subject it's pretty obvious why we are still floundering on the pandemic.
I hate calling it a pandemic. Yes, it is by definition. But, so is influenza and no one calls the flu a pandemic even though the WHO says the flu kills as many as 650,000 people worldwide per year.

@Xzavier Torrejon the only way the government could have responded "correctly and efficiently" would have been to lock down all international travel from the the day it left china and to have made it illigal for everyone to leave thier house for 14 days after the first person in america tested positive. otherwise there would still be people doing whatever they want and it would continue to spread regardless of the amount of tests and precautions taken

Where I live, you're only allowed to get a test if you get sick and a doctor decides you need one. Everyone else is banned from getting one because there aren't enough supplies and labs to test large numbers of people. And even then, the tests aren't always reliable. So it's kind of a waste of time. By the time people find out if they have it, they're already getting over it. And that's only if your test came back with an accurate result.
Literally every developing country is going through this. India, Brazil, Russia, Mexico, Thailand, Philippines, South Africa. All of them. They are only testing symptomatic patients.

Here in Italy I think this was the main task we did wrong. People get tested just if they're hospitalized or if you get access to private clinics. My mother got hospitalized with Covid symptoms and eventually tested positive; me and my father got the same but milder symptoms and had direct contact with her and we NEVER got tested, even if I almost begged them to have one.
This video perfectly explains why testing is much more important than any other prevention measure and restrictions we now have in every country.
