Thanks for the awesome video Sho! With new people finding out about Analogue products on the daily, this will surely help some of those newbies out. I wish these videos existed when I started buying Analogue products. My fave Genesis games growing up were Sonic 2, Aladdin, and NBA JAM. So many hours playing NBA JAM
You're very welcome brother! I wished content existed when I also got mine back then, but I didn't have the equipment to try my hand at producing any of it. Now I do and I feel like I want to be of use to people where I can! 😀 ALSO I LOVED NBA JAM! Also Sonic 2. Amazing games. I'm pretty sure my one friend would never leave my house due to Sonic 2, haha. And Streets of Rage 3!
What a comprehensive video! I recently got my MegaSG. Grew up with a Genesis and couldn't find my old system in the basement. So of course I did the only logical thing and bought an SG, built a MiSTer and have a Pocket on the way. I do have one question regarding RomCarts for the Genesis. Terra or Ever? Is the only difference in the handling of the CD Audio for Genesis games? From what I can tell, both do it the same, but I know you mentioned the EverDrive could have looping issues. Has that been resolved in updates for the EverDrive? Appreciate your detailed and thorough content!
Hahah! Thank you! I also grew up with a Genesis, so I know how ya feel on that! Still one of my top fav consoles alongside the Super Nintendo! And you went all in on FPGA stuff like I did years ago! 😂 Hope you're enjoying them! Terra's MegaSD or the Mega EverDrive Pro... well, I will say both have their uses, so it's very hard to pick just one! I'd say if I had to choose I'd go with MED, simply because it can do more than the MegaSD over all. The MED DID have looping issues, but Krikzz ended up supporting the MD+ format, so that became redundant. And something that you can do with the MED is watch .mp4 videos (and even movies!) -- something you cannot with the MegaSD. Thanks again for yoru comment and support! 😎
Is it safe to flash the jailbreak firmware on a brand new SG? I should be getting mine tomorrow or Friday and this is definitely the first thing I will be doing. Thanks for the great video!
You're welcome! And yes, it's completely safe to flash the jailbreak on a brand new SG! You can also downgrade or flash OEM firmware in the same manner too. It's completely unbrickable! Enjoy it when you get it my man! I have for almost 3 years. 😎
@@TalentfourDisruption Niiiice! I have a Pocket and that device is also awesome too! Eventually it'll be unlocked! And I'll be there to cover it too! 👀👀
thanks for the clear tutorial.i had to jailbreak mine as i use an everdrive and load catridge just resets the game loaded into ram making it impossible to change games without getting up and manually power cycling
You're very welcome my man! That actually sounds like a very interesting bus conflict between your EverDrive and the Mega SD. Do you have the Mega EverDrive Pro by chance?
@@RetroSho hi thats for the reply. i use a clone everdrive with no onboard fpga. the everdrive does the exact same thing on real harware.not really an issue as i just use the jailbreak and load from an sd.much easier and quicker
@@roasty80 Ahh yeah! Clone EverDrives kinda fall off on the Mega SG since the device itself wasn't tested to work with those due to variable components. Kinda unfortunate 😅
Unfortunately, I just got my Mega SG from Analogue yesterday, and it's not recognizing my SD card. I have it formatted to FAT32 and did everything as the video described. When it comes to the step to update to the custom firmware, I put the SD card in, turn on my Mega SG, and it just comes up normally, without attempting to upgrade the firmware. Any ideas?
Looks like Analogue may have locked out that part of the firmware on the newer consoles produced in 2023. Could be intentional, could not be. There’s nothing that can be done unless a new firmware comes around. No one else has successfully cracked any of their hardware. Sorry about that.😞
Heya! Jailbreaking isn't *NEEDED* per say, but it will provide some functionality to you that you won't be able to get with flash carts -- mainly the ability to play ColecoVision games. You would need to to have not only the Genesis flash cart, but also the Game Gear one to has the same amount of game coverage as the JB. Then again, you cannot save states with the JB -- this is something something you can do with flash carts. It's just an opportunity to be able to get a bit more out of your console, without having to pay for flash carts, should one be interested. 😎
Anyone know how to save a game after you've done the jailbreak? The message that comes up telling you how to save makes no sense to me, all it does it tell me to press down and start to return to the menu, it doesn't say how to actually make a save state.
Heya. So the RAM message is only to preserve the save data onto the SD card. It CANNOT do save states. You select yes so the save data you save gets moved to the SD card for preservation. When you restart that specific game you’ll see those save files from your previous play session. Sorry this wasn’t clear in the video. 😅
@@RetroSho Oh don't worry about it, I must have got confused beforehand thinking the jailbreak would add save states but I guess not. Anyways thanks for this tutorial, did it yesterday and it all went smoothly. I actually got the Mega SG yesterday too! I got lucky here in Japan and found one selling brand new online for about $260. The second I saw that listing I bought it instantly because it's pretty hard to come across them these days, especially in a country where they aren't manufactured in.
@@EccoMixes Oh man congrats on the Mega SG then!! It’s actually sold out everywhere now so next to impossible to get here in the states now too! I personally believe it’s a very solid purchase over all. Jail breaking it basically makes it a good devices just shy of the flash carts that can do Mega CD
@@RetroSho Yeah, I think last year there were restocks for the Mega SG but I completely missed that so I'm glad I was finally able to get one now. I've wanted once since the original release in 2019 so it feels good to finally own one. From my short time with it i'm really impressed, the accuracy and sound quality is blowing me away, not to mention the practically lag-free experience. Seriously playing with these gorgeous 8bitdo Mega Drive controllers I don't think i've ever played such a smooth lag-free experience before, especially playing wirelessly and connected to a HD screen. I really need to grab myself a Super NT now after experiencing Analogue, although I feel that's going to be extra difficult than it was getting the Mega SG here. Considering how much more popular and loved the Super Nintendo is in Japan compared to the Mega Drive, i'm not going to see frequent online listings for it, that's for sure.
@@EccoMixes Oh yeah I remember those restocks last year. They dried up as soon as pandemic stuff got worse. The sound is amazing! It really gets close to the original Genesis/Mega Drive sound, while having options to make it a cleaner sound or more muddy. And the controllers are easily the best that 8BitDo has ever constructed so far! I wish you the best of luck with procuring a Super NT! It's definitely worth the purchase as much as the Mega SG, though the JB feature set is slightly less robust. I use mine almost every single week. 😎
I lost my volume after jailbreak and adding ROMS.. anyone have any idea what to do about this? Note the physical carts and ROMS run fine, just no audio anymore for either
hello Sho thanks for the video I would like to know if you have a link where I can download all the game library that you add to the SNES folder in the Super Nt, and the game library that you add Mega Sg, I have searched for those games library I like your videos and I can't find anything, I hope you can help me.
I recently started playing Light Crusader, but my progress was not being saved. Has this happened to anyone else? I tried Sonic3 and everything saves without a problem.
It's possible it could be an issue with the ROM. What I would recommend is use a CRC32 checker, notate the CRC value, then find another ROM with a different value and check that one against it. If not this, then it's possible it's an issue with the firmware.
I cant seem to get the save game feature to work, dont have a select button on my controller just start. Also dont have any autosaves I am confused am I missing something I followed video step by step please help!
Oh man! That's actually a MISTAKE! It's supposed to be DOWN & START! Then you press the START button again and navigate the menu as in the video! Thanks for catching this, and my apologies! Go ahead and follow the directions checking off the boxes. Then lemme know!

You don't "Get a MiSTer" you build it. The preassembled ones go for as much as $600-800. To assemble your own it's 2.5x the price of the megaSG and parts are hard to come by. Some people just prefer purchasing something already assembled, affordable, and flashing the firmware and being off to the races.
