NOTE: A few days ago Krikzz announced a name change of the GBA flash cart. Future sales of the flash cart will just be called "EverDrive GBA Mini". This was to avoid confusion on it being called the X5/Mini, since there are no other versions of the cart (like X3 or X7). For all intents and purposes it is the very same cart as the original X5 and the 2020 X5 Mini.
I need your help. So I’m running the Everdrive GBA Mini with Goomba on my GameCube’s GBA Player hardware with the GameBoy Interface through the SD2SP2 on HDMI. My question is, how do I adjust settings for GBA games such as turning off the backlighting, 480p or 240p (whichever is better), and what else can I change. After being exposed to it in the couple of years, I can say with confidence it's the very best handheld library I've ever seen! I HAD NO IDEA ADVANCE WARS WAS SO AMAZING. Or the Sonic Advance series. I did play Tactics Advance and A2 via emulation however. 🤣 You're very welcome on the video! It was designed mainly with beginners in mind, as flash carts can sometimes be intimidating (even if you see other videos on them). In this case, the handheld EverDrive carts are all fairly simple to set up, if you avoid some of the more advanced stuff you find online. Then eventually one can build up to one of the more complicated flash carts that has a lot more going on! Will hopefully guide people every step on the way on as many of these devices as possible! 👀

Actually you reminded me that I need to finish a video on that cart so thanks for that! 😂 🔥 As for the NGP emulator, well… there isn’t enough resources on the GBA hardware to replicate the NGP in its entirety. Very informative video! I HAVE THE ANSWER FOR YOU!!! This came up in another video in the comments so it pays to read them. When you are using emulated games on the everdrive x5 mini and you save in the game MAKE SURE you press L and R to bring up the emulator menu for a sec and it flashes an hourglass indicating that youve saved. Honestly the Omega Flash for 80 bucks would have been a better deal cuz i hear over there that it just works way better. But so to recap AFTER YOU SAVE IN THE GAME PRESS L AND R TO BRING UP THE EMULATOR MENU AND YOUR SAVE WILL BE SAVED.
hey! i know this is an old video but could you go into more detail about save file transferring? SPecifically getting a save file from the internet? I'm not quite understanding. Thanks for the help!!
Sorry for the slow response! Save file transferring is kinda distant and not as often used. It's really just converting a save file to a format that can be usable by the flash cart! There aren't many places where you can find these save files unfortunately. GameFAQs is a good place to start -- otherwise you'd be using a search browser to look for them, then using a site like "Save File Converter" to convert the file as needed. Hope this helps!!
Love the honesty along with the pros and cons. Didn't know GB and GBC was emulation. I would like to see a gb/gbc flash cart on a GBA. I want to know will it work natively with out emulation and if you can change GB color pallet my holding the arrow keys on boot like with a real GBA. Also If gb/gbc can stretch will screen. As always great video.
You're very welcome! To be honest, I've never really liked the idea of how a few other UA-camrs claim that the emulation is "perfect" on these flash carts. It never has been! Partially because the GBA hardware can't handle it at all and the screen resolutions don't match that of the NES and SMS consoles completely. Concessions had to be made to get them to work. Much better to tell people exactly what they are getting and let them come to their own conclusions on if they would like to purchase it or not. If you want to see how a GB/C EverDrive looks, I could always send you a picture on Twitter. However, it will be in a small window within the viewable screen of the GBA. This cannot be stretched at all -- It runs in a 1:1 pixel mode, which means the guys at Nintendo basically took the original viewing space from the DMG/CGB Game Boy and superimposed that screen size onto the GBA. It's actually a perfect recreation of how the GB/C looked -- we've only gotten older and more appreciate larger and larger viewing spaces (younger people were born into devices that already had huge viewing sizes) that are upscaled a bit. As for the GB/C flash carts, they all run via FPGA hardware, so it's much closer to original hardware than the emulated counterparts you see here in this video. You can change the color palette, but you have to do it IMMEDIATELY AFTER selecting your GB/C games within the flash cart (and not on initial flash cart boot). Do note that FPGA recreations are STILL emulation in the truest sense. It's just another approach that is much closer to the metal, since it seeks to recreate the original functionality. This is of course very dependent on who the dev is. Thankfully almost everyone in the entire FPGA arena are all masters of their craft and very passionate about getting it right. Glad you enjoyed it brother! And I can't wait to watch your EverCade podcast later today. 😎

So! There is no "X7" (or X3) version of the GBA cart. The X7 you're referring to is the GB/GBC flash cart! Only the X5 and X5 Mini exists for the GBA, and Krikzz hasn't yet said if he's gonna do an X7 or an updated version as of yet.
@@RetroSho Right. As I understand it the X5 runs GB and GBC games via software emulation, whereas the X7 is FPGA (or similar). I had read people had issues with saves for the GBC Pokemon games on the X5 (as well as graphical issues in Crystal) and I was curious if there was any merit to those statements. I was also curious if the X7 scales GB/GBC games 'correctly' to the full size of the Analogue screen whereas it seems emulated GB/GBC games on the X5 have a large amount of black space around them.
@@chrisb1236 This is correct - the X5 runs the GB/GBC games in a software emulator known as Goomba. The X7 is run of it's FPGA. I can confirm that there are saving issues with the Pokemon Red/Blue, but not sure how wide spread that particular issue is. For whatever reason it does not push a save file for those games to the emusave folder at all. In this case, you could always use the emulator's save state. Actually it might be a good idea to report the issue to Krikzz to see what can be done on his end. As for the borders GB and GBC is run in a 1:1 pixel mode and that cannot be resized at all. As it appears on the Analogue Pocket screen, it would take up perhaps 60-70% of the full screen size. You get a bit more mileage if you are running it in docked mode. If you are going to be mainly a GB/GBC gamer, you may want to instead grab a GB X7 cart. It'll be the better deal for you, though you won't be able to play GBA games. I have both carts and definitely prefer to play my GB/C games on the X7. 😎
Great video man. Do you know how to save changes in the game menu on gb emulation, like putting the sgb borders off ? I always have to do it manually every time I launch the game
Hello! And thank you! It doesn't look like Dwedit included the saving of permanent features to Goomba Color at all. You'll have to change the setting each time unfortunately. I have found a link to someone who asked him the very same question years ago. He did provide a workaround, but it's one that requires building a new file for it yourself: www.dwedit.org/dwedit_board/viewtopic.php?id=683
I have a question. I'm trying to edit a pokemon save on pkhex, but as you said in the video, the cart will always overwrite the saves and store them in the saves folder. Is there any way to get around this?
For some reason games that uses eeprom such as super street fighter 2 turbo revival wont save at all. Any idea on a fix for it. I play my everdrive on my original DS.
Oh man, that's a shame! This is something that needs to be reported to Krikzz, as it's an issue with the firmware itself for EEPROM-save games. Seems like it's a very similar issue to the EEPROM-save to the Analogue Pocket. One work around would be to patch the EEPROM game into an SRAM save type using a tool such as GBATA: flashcartdb.com/index.php/How_to_Patch_GBA_Games_with_GBATA You could then change the save type in the ED menu to save as SRAM and give it another go. Hope this helps!
Hi I followed this guide and for the most part it is great. The only thing I am confused on is games that save. For example I booted up pokemon firered and it starts fine. I go to save the game I turn the system off and my save is no longer there. I tried changing the save type to off but then the game never boots past the GBA bios screen. How do I load my save game or when I turn off the system?
Heya! You're welcome! (And thank you!!) So Pokemon FireRed should be a .FLA (FLASH128) file for it's save type. Leave this setting on this since the Pokemon games can be fickle with the save type as you are well aware. You also will want to make sure you have a clean FireRed ROM. If you can, search the net for the ROM that has a CRC value that is 84EE4776 (also known as Rev 1, but make sure it has this correct CRC value). I've tested this version of the ROM to successfully save with my cart. If it does not work, that will mean there is an issue with your cart and saving of FLASH128 games. Please message back and let me know!
So on my gba mini I’ve been playing Astro boy and I’ll save the game then play it again later but as of recently my games just won’t save everytime I come back I have to start from the very beginning any idea what it might be?
This particular cart does not run Game Boy and Game Boy color games natively. What you think is native is actually emulation but tied to the same UI. I do believe it doesn’t run them natively because there isn’t enough LEs (or space) on the FPGA to do so.
@@pirate_cove_man Yes, it'll run GB and GBC natively then since it would be directly from the GB flashcart and onto the GBA's hardware. However, you would still be limited to the smaller GB viewing screen, because the designers at Nintendo limited that space so that it was 1:1 as an original Game Boy. It's a hardware limitation in this sense for GB games on the GBA. The best way to play GB and GBC with hardware would be playing it on original Game Boy (or Pocket, or GB Color) that has been modded, or on something like the Analogue Pocket. In these cases, they allow for the viewing space to be extended so the image can be a bit larger.
@@RetroSho I'd prefer to have everything on one console, so I'll use a GBC flashcart for that. One more question. Does the GBA flashcart in this video support motion for shit like Yoshi Topsy Turvy?
@@pirate_cove_man You could definitely do that for GBC games! And everything GB as well. Unfortunately NONE of the GB flash carts (or GBA) have accelerometers within them, so you can’t play those games that have motion like Topsy Turvy or the Wario Ware stuff. It sucks. 😩
I would say try a different SD card if you can. Place a single ROM file onto the root of a formatted SD card -- what you want to see is if the cart is working correctly with just one element to look at. If it does in fact work, it might mean that you went well over the max limit for files. You also will want to make sure you test this in a fully charged console, so you know proper electricity is being provided. If it doesn't work (with multiple SD cards), you will want to contact the retailer you purchased it from and get a replacement or a refund. There seems to have been a bad batch of Minis that were sold a few years ago. Hope this helps!
I've got the original X5, the one that's a translucent purple colour (kinda like the Xploder GB cheat cart). I wasn't 100% sure if it supported NES, so it's cool to know it does. I've played Master System & Game Gear on it and that works well. It's actually more responsive than on the GameCube's GB Player, which has some input delay.
Heya brother! It definitely does, but with some small issues! A good deal of the games at least run to some extent. Master System and Game Gear run pretty well indeed! I've actually never played on the GameCube GB Player before! Couldn't be bothered to pay for that one disc that shot up in value. 🤔
@@RetroSho Yeah I was lucky I bought the GB Player back in 2008 before the retro boom. I actually can't think of many NES games I'd want on my flash cart that haven't been remade.
I recently received my gba mini everdrive and I popped it in the console and it says sd card not found? I thought I can just plug and play the cartridge? Can someone help?
Wassup Kush! That sounds like an issue with the EverDrive PCB. Have you tried a different SD card? You want to make sure you're using something that's branded, like Samsung or SanDisk. If you're testing another card and it red screens still, you'll want to have it returned or swapped for a new one.
@@RetroSho yes sandisk straight from bestbuy so i knw its not fake. Tried 2 diff. Whats suppose to happen when you try to turn it on with no sd card inserted ?? Cause i still get red screen
@@OGkush69x Oh man yeah, sounds like the board itself has failed. What you're supposed to see is a gray screen that says "SD card not found" if you have no card inserted. What you could also do is clean the contacts or try another Game Boy Advance, but it really sounds like the board has failed. I would get a return as quickly as you can, my man!
The ROMs don't need to be seperated, but they do need to be in folders. If you have them in .zip files they won't be seen. Make sure they are all extracted.

He did provide a workaround, but it's one that requires building a new file for it yourself:

@@CrazybatouJvC Welcome my man! I enjoy the flash cart! It’s a neat device! 🙏🏿
Hello! Quick question. If playing this on a GBA, is there a button combination to go back to the main menu to select another game?
Heya! Unfortunately there’s no way to reset to the main menu on this flash cart. You’ll need to reset by powering the console off then back on. 😩
One work around would be to patch the EEPROM game into an SRAM save type using a tool such as GBATA: flashcartdb.com/index.php/How_to_Patch_GBA_Games_with_GBATA
You could then change the save type in the ED menu to save as SRAM and give it another go. Hope this helps!
Hell ya nice tut
Thanks my man!
I followed you step by step, GBA games run great but when I try to play GBC games it says error 46 can not find emulators.
So on my gba mini I’ve been playing Astro boy and I’ll save the game then play it again later but as of recently my games just won’t save everytime I come back I have to start from the very beginning any idea what it might be?
Is it just the Astro Boy? It might be an issue with the save type. Do you have it on EEPROM saves?
I got a everdrive gba x5 for $30 Had a question can i use my phone or do i have to do the work on pc
Yo! If you have a phone that can easily access both an SD card as well as use .zip files you can use that too. Will just be a bit slower
Hi man. Thank you for the video i have a question. Do you have any link to download all gba games like you have on your video?
Can't provide download links of that nature on UA-cam.
Hey so everytime I try to download PocketNES, it always gets flagged as a virus and the download doesn't finish, is that normal?
your voice sounds like you could be a villain in an anime
Hah! Appreciate that! 😂
@@RetroSho haha yeee! hey i bought a sandisk micro SD from the link in your description.. does it work with GB X7 as well?
@@xCorzo650x Sure does! You won’t need much more than 32GB to get everything possible for the GB as well 😎
Your videos are good, bro. Got a sub from me.
Word! Thank you so much! Much appreciated Quinn!! 😎
Can I emulate atari lynx and neogeo pocket color games on this?
You cannot emulate Atari Lynx at all on this device. Emulating NEOGEO Pocket is pretty poor on this as well. Verrrry slow emulation 👀
@@RetroSho are you saying I cannot because that's what you believe, or is it only a belief limited by limiting beliefs that you say I cannot?
Why does this thing use emulation for GB and GBC? The GBA already runs those natively, so what's the point in an emulator?
This particular cart does not run Game Boy and Game Boy color games natively. What you think is native is actually emulation but tied to the same UI.
I do believe it doesn’t run them natively because there isn’t enough LEs (or space) on the FPGA to do so.
@@RetroSho okay then? If I were to use a GBC flashcart and run it on a GBA, would it run GB and GBC natively?
It sucks. 😩
Инструкция и прошивка подходит как для Everdrive GBA X5 Mini так и просто для Everdrive GBA X5 ?
Yes!
i did everything correct but the games aren't popping up what do i do
I would say try a different SD card if you can.
Thank you but the stuff I downloaded from your video is it games or a file to put the games in
@@Matthew08 No games are included. The files you got from the video will allow you to play GB, GG, and NES games via emulator
@@RetroSho thank you
I've got the original X5, the one that's a translucent purple colour (kinda like the Xploder GB cheat cart).
@@Iceferno There can be a few! Mainly a good deal of the home brew games! That is, if you can find them 😂

If you have a K-card revo? tnx
I don't have one of those, but I could take a look at it!
I recently received my gba mini everdrive and I popped it in the console and it says sd card not found? I thought I can just plug and play the cartridge? Can someone help?
Did ya format the card? It will work best if formatted as FAT32. If not this the card may not be good and may have to be returned.
When I run goomba on the everdrive it says there is no roms found and to build a compilation rom or use a pogoshell. What does that mean?
can you play SNES with this?
You cannot. There is an SNES emulator that exists, but it’s functionality is very poor and that project was abandoned more than 10 years ago. 😩
does this work using mac?
I don't think there is a way for updating on the Mac.
Where can I get save files?
Save files can be obtained from GameFAQs as well as a few Google searches. 🤔
Can somebody tell me the name of the game at second 15
If you mean at 0:15 the name of the game is "Pocky & Rocky with Becky".
@@RetroSho thank you very much it looks very interesting kind of Zelda games :D
@@Leo-vi7tt Haha welcome! It looks like a Zelda type of game yeah? It’s more of a shooter though 😛
Did all this and got a red screen
I would get a return as quickly as you can, my man!
none of the gb or gbc games register for me. when i boot up the gc or gbc emu it says no roms found. do they need to be seperated? gba works fine
The ROMs don't need to be seperated, but they do need to be in folders. If you have them in .zip files they won't be seen. Make sure they are all extracted.
@@RetroSho thanks, i was being an idiot. instead of just running the game i was running goomba itself and it couldnt find the roms. lol. works fine now.
