    Fantastic video.
I relate so much to your camera journey. Started with the Canon T6 I got for Christmas, 6-8 months later I bought my first camera with my own money, the Fuji Xpro3.
I absolutely loved that camera and made the best images I’ve taken with the Xpro3. But about 2 years later , I wanted a video camera.
I saw Bo Burnhams “Inside” on Netflix and learned it was shot with the Limix S1H. I had watched videos about this camera when it released and remembered people saying great things about it. So I bought it.
I went an entire year without using the S1H , it just kind of sat in my bag. But now I’m excited about filming/creating again and I still have my awesome S1H. I have so much to learn but I’m ready. I’m helping film my friends second ever film with the S1h and my other camera…
I recently sold my Xpro3 to a friend , as I was feeling uninspired in my photography and wanted a change. I bought the Eos R3 and RF 70-200 2.8
Both cameras are way more than I need , but I’ve forced my self into a place where my gear is more than good enough, I just have to work on improving my own skills with them.
I agree with not being worried about switching systems or trying new cameras, but at the same time your tools are for creating , and that should be the main focus

I shot tons of short and feature films with my friends back in the 90s with Hi8 tape. All analog. Editing with VHS recorders and analog sound mixers. The last thing on my mind was image quality. I developed as a filmmaker more than I could imagine because I was focused on actual filmmaking instead of specs. You kids these days waste too much time on the camera instead of the story. You have no idea how lucky you are with all the tech you have available and you sometimes get lost in it. Focus on story and reaching an audience. These days more than ever cameras are redundant. Almost any camera is more than capable of shooting decently. Best of luck and nice video btw.

Honestly today, as long as the dynamic range is fine, you have a flat-ish profile and a decent 10 bit code (4:2:0 or 4:2:2) you’re fine. A GH5 is $600-$1000 used, and while it may or may not come with VLOG, you have Cinelike D. Investing in that, and either a 12-35 f2.8 or going for a Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 with a speedbooster (and take the lenses to a different camera system) is fine. In fact even just the 25mm f1.7 is fine. Use whatever is left on good lights.

I've tried the magic bullet camera hack so I have have those controls, and it made the camera really annoyingly slow. I love using the Canon C70 its one of my favourite cameras to use and I'm definitely buying one for my business. I love how the image looks, feels and rigs up. Am I a consumer or... hit a bit hard because I'm in the middle of an update from my old Canon 5D mark iii and Blackmagic Cinema pocket camera with speed booster and a lot of add-ons from SmallRig among others. Before all that I came from Sony. But I am not a cameraman as a starting point, but a motion graphics designer who also films and takes photos or makes stop motion recordings plus VFX. Should I now sell all my EF glass and switch platforms to a Sony FX6 with an internal ND filter and great sound outputs, but which cannot take photos? Or a Panasonic Lumix S1H?... I was in doubt for a long time..
I ended up with a Canon EOS R5C hybrid, - I've used it almost every day since I got it, but in the update I feel like you're entering a gold rush. because you also know what you need to make it work for what you want to do and you feel like more of a consumer and not someone who goes out and films. It's not the brand that sells for me, but how it fits into my work flow - I'm not going out to do a documentary or a wedding (although that can easily be done with this Canon camera) It has to meet my needs and then some. I'll have to go out and film now - thanks for the upload. 🥳😊

I'll admit every brand makes perfectly adequate cameras. Then it comes down to preference and what you need.
For a long time I've felt like a general rule is the most true to what you see with your own eyes images come mostly out of Canon and Nikon cameras. Photo and video. Most other brands generally aren't as sharp and have some degree of color shift. Often that can be compensated for with lots and color grading but not always. Let's face it most people don't use that image straight out of the camera anyway. It's always altered and degraded to make it less true to life and more "cinematic".
Sony while it's picture may not be as wysiwyg, they tend to pack more features in their cameras at similar price points. More recently I've been leaning more towards Sony myself for that reason.
I've been a big Canon fan going back to the film days for photos. When the t3i came out it was literally the best bang for your buck prosumer camera for both photos and videos. I was hooked.
Canon made me really angry as they moved to the mirrorless realm. The problem was glass. I had all these EF and EFS lenses and they brought out M-mount then R-mount. There is no reason they couldn't put EF mount natively on mirrorless cameras. Sure there are adapters and speedboosters but the traditionally add more distortion to the image. They still haven't brought out enough R-mount lenses to match my existing lenses and M-mount has been abandoned. I really feel like anyone that bought M series cameras really got screwed over.
I figured if I'm replacing glass anyway I might as well look at other brands. I almost went down the Panasonic route with the GH5 then Sony released the A series. The A7siii has just been a great jack of all trades camera. The FX30 and the ZV-E1 are in that same realm. Sure you can probably find other cameras that handle individual functions and features better but few cameras have them all as well and at similar price points. Between the 3 cameras there are subtle differences so once again it comes down to individual preferences.
None the less I have a hard time telling anyone you have to have X brand or model of camera now days. You can get the job done with most any of them.

    • @jakehayden998
      @jakehayden998  Рік тому +1

Yeah I agree about the canon lenses. I have a classic EOS R and the most annoying this about it is the current lens selection. The R lens catalogue is growing, but Canon not allowing 3rd parties (like Sigma) to make lenses is really frustrating for me. I miss having access to Sony’s lens selection

  • @invisibleadversary

My journey closely mirrors yours, involving transitions between various camera models. The FX3 is a wise choice though. If only it incorporated internal ND filters the way the bulkier FX6 does, it would be as close to a perfect camera as there ever was. It packs so much into a small little box but you're of course right that the emphasis should be on what you shoot. I hear a lot of camera influencers who own RED Komodo Xs admitting that the RED Komodo X is an impractical choice and not at all functional in the way that an FX6 is but that it inspires them to go out and shoot which is a good thing. Even if that inspiration is grounded in a childhood dream of owning a RED, it doesn't matter because its getting them out and shooting more even if the large majority of consumers can't even tell the difference. I suppose you can call this brand loyalty but if a piece of a gear has that ability to inspire action and creativity then it is worth it but it doesn't mean that everyone has to think this way either. However you get to the point of creation seems worth it.

I’m waiting to see what Sony or Blackmagic release next. If the next iteration of the FX3 adds 6k and internal NDs for under $6000 then that might be it for me for a long time. @invisibleadversary Рік тому +2

@@jakehayden998 Totally. It's so close to "perfection" but I guess throwing internal NDs into the FX3 would totally destroy the market viability of the FX6 and I also hear that internal NDs would compromise IBIS which the FX3 does have and the FX6 doesn't. It would really makes sense to have both cameras but obviously that's a lot of money.

@@invisibleadversary that's it... you can't have internal NDs and IBIS, at least not yet, and certainly not in a body that small... bc lol yes ofc, if the next iteration had 6k and internal NDs then what would they do re the FX6 successor to make it a viable contender? so i'd imagine if they _could_ implement both in a small body they just wouldn't bring it out til the market demanded it. and they're selling cameras like crazy rn (my A cam's the FX3), so it just isn't plausible imo
the fact that they're AUTO NDs, too... ugh, a dream come true.. total set-and-forget shooting, can focus on composition/etc... i'd think about getting one, even, if it weren't so far along in it's life cycle (at least, i hope it is.)

8.25 The opposite is true... we actually act like all the other brands matter, thats why we are constantly searching for the 'right' camera... as indicated in your journey from Canon T2i. haha.

ive found out that, listening to others opinions on cameras are kinda, dumb. i followed the trend from pretty early on, i got an a6600 and im on an s5iix and ngl, both suck compared to my favourite camera ive had, blackmagic 6k pro. Now im going back to blackmagic, probably keeping my s5iix as a b cam and photo camera, but i miss blackmagics menus, ease of use, internal raw

Hmm... I think it all comes down to the checkboxes that make one want to shoot. Fill the checkboxes, and then don't seek more. Seeking more is just G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)

Buy Canon if you hate money and hate new technology.
Buy Sony if you want quality / newest tech fairly priced for your money, which will be outdated in ~2 years as they release the next version.

I actually agree to an extend. The only financial advantage to buying canon I've found is that they lose value really fast, especially the ones that are super overpriced at launch (most of them). The only reason I am on a C200 right now is because I bought it used for less 50% of the original price

If you accepting it with Canon cameras, that you only get a camerabody with a certain amount of technology for that amount of money, the camera will cost you, than you will be fine with canon, because you will not have wrong expectations. Less money/cheaper camerabody = cripplehammer. You get , what you are willing to pay for. If you don´t want to pay for a certain level of technology, you don´t want that technology hard enough. You don´t get an ARRi for an apple, why should you get premium Canon technology for an apple?
If peoples can´t afford it, they doesn´t make enough money. The "better" camera will not change that. That peoples should better work on their skills, to be able to earn enough money. It´s simply like that.
A better camera will only make it easier, but she will not replace missing skills from the user.
If you can`t tell a story with a "cheap" camera, a better "picture quality" will not change that. The movie will just be trash with more pixels/dynamic range etc. .
And a huge portion are skills in audio and lighting. An ARRI or a RED will not switch on the lights for you. Also not a Sony, a Canon or any other camera brand.
Maybe it´s just me, but i get more and more the "impression", that (youtube) peoples seems only want to buy a camera with "low light capabilities", so they don´t have to buy and set up light equipment. Just the camera out of the bag, 2 hours "blockbuster" handheld done in one take (they don´t like a 30min recording limit) preferable in a dark colemine with just a candle as a lightsource (look, what my camera can do!), starring black cats as the main actors/actresses, back with the camera into the bag. No mentioning from tripods, sliders, jibs, light stands, light units, light shapers, computing power (workstation/laptop), software, etc. . They only talk, what the sensor and "raw" recording from their camera was able to do for them.
And after every 2 months, they will "justify" on youtube, why they switch between camerabrands again, and why the new/other camera XYZ will make them better cinematographers...fully ignoring, that even netflix movies, made with expensive cameras, with an obscene budget behind that movies, can be trash...
Oh, and my 2cents: the Canon C70 or the C300 MkIII (depending on the camerabody size, you want/need) would be a better choice as the C200. I wouldn´t buy a C200 now. You will sell that camera very soon again...there is a reason, why it is that cheap...

I would absolutely love a C70 and the C300 mk iii is dream camera of mine, but they are just way too expensive right now. I actually am very happy with my C200 and don’t plan on upgrading for a long time, I think it’s an awesome camera

@@jakehayden998 In my case, i did chose the Canon XF605 camcorder, to be able to do youtube videos. I wanted a all in one solution, because i know, that i would do really silly things, if i would "rig out" a camera with changeable lenses (C70). So it is some sort of an "restriction" and should be "enough" for the end products: 1080p MP4 videos.
It did end with the Canon XF605, two Angelbird 512GB V90 SDXC cards, one NANO-C98 battery with Power Tap + USB, one 5.5" Desview touch screen monitor + E6 batterydummy with Power Tap cable (all will be powered by the NANO-C98 battery), one Sennheiser wireless XLR lavalier microphone set, and a Panasonic XLR shotgun microphone with a "dead cat", some HDMI cables, and a Manfrotto remote control. LOL!
But you would cry night and day for months, if you would know the price for my new workstation (AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5995WX processor, 128GB Ram, 48GB NVIDIA RTX A6000 graphic card, 1TB SSD, 4x 4TB HD). Sometimes, evil voices will force me to do silly things, lol! And it has nothing to do with Bethesta`s "Starfield"...i swear!
