Why the Sigma fp was ahead of its time
Thank you for the video. I downloaded the raw files from news shooter website where they compare venice raw with canon raw. I couldn't see that noise even 1000% zoomed in. Did you use the raw lt? I'm thinking there may have been a reason why raw lt was not available in C500 from the beggining. Anyway, I believe you underexposed the scene where you say it has the correct exposure. Otherwise I cannot explain how you managed to destroy the image in such a manner. I would like to have access to the raw files.
Well now I’m happy that I got Sony A7S3! I’ve been working on a set with C70, C80 cameras and really like them especially the ND and how the menu is. But I’m comparing my hybrid to cinema cameras and there’s the FX6 or Burano in Sony lineup
I do like the out of camera skin tones though
Don’t get me wrong dynamic range is not everything, and neither is low light performance. But for me it tops skin tone performance always, since I’m often in situations where I can’t take time to expose correctly or take 2 hours to set up lights or need to record in bad lighting where skin tones would never look right… And it’s just cheaper lenses and camera lol
I feel like its just the draw back of having a stacked sesnor.
Hi Jake, I am trying to buy a camera for my wife that i could use as a C camera to my fx3 and ZvE1, could you tell me what is the equivalent to the apsc FX30 but non cinema line ( just like the a7s3 is to the FX3) Thanks
Kind of hard to buy an APSC that cost the same amount if not more than a full frame. The entire point of an APSC in my opinion is to get good quality and experience with a camera and lenses without the cost that comes with full frame but that kind of goes out the door with the a6700. The body alone is 1200 minimum. I see the full frame a7IV and a lens go for 1300 on ebay...
Anyone have thoughts on the Pyxis? Been using the pocket 4k for years and I want to upgrade this year. I'm on the fence because I really prefer the low light capabilities of the Sony FX6 over Blackmagic. My only fear is the FX6 has been out longer and will become obsolete a lot faster. For such an investment, I'd want to have it for some time and not worry about falling behind in quality!
very good segment. Thanks!
Nice!
Two cameras on my wish list this year is an A7siii and RED Raven 4.5k
Fantastic
My eyes are bleeding for a blackmagic Ursa g2. I’ll pull the trigger eventually. Thanks for the video!
Canon lying to consumers about their products.......gasp.
Shot a short on the Varicam LT back when it was a $20k camera, it was a dream to shoot on, felt like a mini ARRI. The image quality was a bit too clean but had plenty of wiggle room.
i would love to see such a deep dive on the dynamic range of the Sigma FP, as it also have a quite specific repartition, great breakdown as always !
Sony A7s beats this to pulp.
And then, there is the terrible FPN on the C80: ua-cam.com/video/97LAjneEi-4/v-deo.html
I recently went to Turkey to buy an empreinte multi pochette. They showed me a pack of kislux and it looked exactly like this. The texture was no different, the color and appearance was the same, I think I will enjoy buying here in the future.
I have one collecting dust on the shelf. Maybe I need to update the firmware and take it back to the field!
slap a topaz ai on it and you got 60fps and 4k - life is good
Is this a Gone in Sixty Seconds reference? I hope so... just hope you never lost this Eleanor off the Long Beach Pier.
Watched a couple of videos on this camera now, and I'm definitely sold. I've been looking for something where I know I won't have to upgrade for a long long time, and this camera seems so great for film making, definitely going to save up for this one. And for what I've seen in other videos as well, the kit lens is actually really good. Awesome video!
Incredible
No Z CAM?
I don't think you should be so hard on yourself. Just recently I was watching a daytime talk show and this woman and her cousin inherited her grandmother's bag closet. She said her grandmother had four bag closets. One for each season and they were all replica bags purchased from kislux .
I got a great deal for the S5ii during black friday and with a christmas bonus i got it with 3 lenses (the 50, 85 and 20-80) for 1600 euros :D
Great Video!
please do a review of some cheap good vintage lenses. And a follow up with the rest of your set
you should test 6 stops underexposure of c400 in different native isos, like 800, 3200, and 12800, the shadow gets cleaner when you lift them if you shot in higher native isos
got my r8 used basically at the same price of an R.... what do you think guys.
Why didn't you compare highlights with Sony, Sony is notorious for upside down DR, everything is in shadows while highlights and highlight rolloff is always the worst. Also, we all know C70 and DGO is still the king, expecially paired with the speedbooster and EF lenses.
I love testing old and new cinema cameras and got this recently. I quite like it and agree with most of your findings. One thing I don’t agree with is the quality of 1080p. It’s very obviously line skipped and has really bad aliasing issues. Not as much moire as the bmpcc og but still an uphill struggle if you have any straight lines in your shot. The 4K is also line skipped but maybe there is something else at play as it’s not bad at all.
Curious about the rationale behind not listing the BM production 4k while it's the cheapest and best 4k you could get.
SOULARD on your sweater means DRUNKEN. Regarding the video, as a 6K Pro owner, I can only recommend it :) But if you're looking for a second hand camera, I'd say RED cameras for sure considering how cheap they are today compared to their original value
The original S5 does not have "Open gate" recording.
Thanks, one note RED is now owned by NIKON and the future of RED is uncertain. Some claim Nikon will keep the RED line and support. Others claim that Nikon is building a new camera using RED technology... That is why I would not go for RED at this time.
If I recall correctly you used the xh2s mainly with fuji first party lenses. If so that might explain the "digital" look you're talking about. The sharpness of the sensor paired with vintage lenses makes it pop and look much more organic. I've found that Fuji's sharpness is not digital looking. Its not processed, there's no softening of skin that the previous cameras had, there's no smearing, theres no temporal noise reduction because you can turn it off, unlike the FX3 and FX30 which honestly look far more digital mainly because of that. Unless you shoot raw in the FX3 and FX30 you cannot turn off the temporal noise reduction which really ruins the image and has ghosting. Not so much in base ISO but definitely significant in second native ISO. You set the fuji to 12800 and it will not have this issue, meaning a less processed image. It will definitely not look as good in terms of stills but in terms of motion picture id much rather have that noisy mess that has no temporal noise reduction that introduces ghotsing over the alternative.
Very interesting! That alexa classic🔥
Bought one for 599 just for low light stills. Looking forward to using it for low light street photography
This is a really super helpful video and thanks for putting together. It does make we wonder though - with all the cameras listed here, you really can't go wrong with any of them and that in turn makes me think that these have more in common (the sensor really I am thinking) than not (ergonomics - which are of course, incredibly important too). There are other similar videos to yours where a chap goes and films the same scene with Arri, Sony and whatnots, and then sits in front of the footage and sometimes guesses that the Sony footage is the Arri. It's an interesting time and yes, the second hand market particular for stuff like good quality EF glass is insane.
I bought an FS7 when I left an agency and went freelance, insane camera and still used in industry and you can get it so cheap. It's amazing! Built in NDs! Incredible image quality and build quality are the best
what about the alexa xt and sxt
it's all fine, there's no bad product, just bad pricing. And I think canon just has bad pricing. I'd love to pick up a canon camera if it wasn't for a sony FX6 or blackmagic option being much cheaper and better in some ways.
Sony FS7 all the way!! the prices are absolut a steal, you are stupid not to buy it - or sell it now if you own one. why you ask? like from 2011 - 2017 - almost every DP / production company owned and used this camera. it was THE camera. still 2024, if you working in TV / Documentary / Corporate / Video segmet, it is still absolute an camera you make good pictures and good money with. got all the cables, good form factor, its not heavy, you dont need to rig the shit out of it to get it usable, 4k, 60p, 10Bit 422 ---> YES! you want to shoot commercials, music videos, shortfilms? NO! thats where black magic good at. Im shooting 80-90% of my jobs for clients with my FS7s, sometimes they want another camera, like FX6/9 - then i have to rent it. i would say that if you know your craft, know how to exposure, set white balance and compose a picture, the FS7 will give you 85-90% image quality of the FX6/9 for 1/6th of the price. you have to think about if FullFrame, Autofocus and better low light image is a must for your work. there is a ton of FS7 footage out there, most of the official test shoots from the 2011 look like shit and very traditional TV-Camera style. there are documentaries online, that looks BRILLIANT, shot with this camera. i think also on vimeo there is a own "sony fs7" video channel where you finde tons of good stuff. in the wrong hands, this camera produces very very mediocre pictures, and a ton of mediocre people used this camera - be aware! if you want to buy one: dont save 200 bucks and buy from a rental house. buy from an owner & operator with hours below 600-800 hours. rental cameras go up to 1500 and above. Pro: - reliability: this think can take a serious beating, water / rain .... no problem. -form factor, weight, ergonomic form factor + hand grip - its just good! - cables + connections - price + equipment - you will never ever get such a cheap camera you can still make money with! like you earning money using this camera after 10 Jobs (= 1500 / 150day) vs FX6 (7000 / 250day = 28 days) Dynamic range: - thats what people forget about fs7: signal/noise ration 1 = 13 Stops, SN=0,5 12 Stops = it has better dynamic range than the new canon c400, also the FX3/6/9 is not that much better, it has less noise - rolling shutter is still ok (somewhat about 15ms i think?) - can shoot interlaced (if you want to work for TV here in europe, its still a must!) - apsc - sensor - you get all the good lightweight lenses / zooms for it! want full frame? buy an speedbooster, easy as that! - you buy 2 of theese (maybe 3 if you need one for spare parts) - go to the producer and say: hey, i have two of the most used cameras of the world for the interview they shot netflix documentaries, sundance winner .... you dont need to spend a second in color correction the two cams + i can give you a special price! you got the job! - FS7 Mark II sells for abour 1800-2000€. got the new ND Technique they use in FX6/9 - you will pay about 800€ more for this feature - i think its worth it (like i bought an second FS7 instead...) downsides: i beginn with the really biggest downside of this cam, beginners dont pay attention and hate this cam: Colors + noise in the dark areas! - cam is rated at ISO 2000 --> for Slog3 you need to rate it for 800 iso, it gets very noisy in the darks if you dont pay attention. if you want to shoot high iso, you can, but then you need to switch to Sony Gama Curves, no slog - more shitty colors - harder to fix it in post! if you need a cam to shoot at 3200 ISO, this is not your camera! - Sony colors: you have to shoot Slog3/Cinegama to get rid of the stupid sony colors. it was very complicated for TV-Cameraman Users back in 2012 to understand. nowadays everyone shoots log profile anyway. so 2 clicks later you got good colors in post. (FX3 / 6 = good colors out of camera) -APSC-Sensor (like if you cant make a good looking picture without FF sensor... i dont ask why...) - no AF at all. nada. if you cant focus manually, learn it! - 4k only in 60P, you dont get more in 4k. - viewfinder / loupe is just mediocre. also monitor is just mediocre but usable (not like panasonic EVA 1 monitor, which is not usable because even inside it is not bright enough) - after heavy use, this thinks break first on the fs7: mic holder, scroll wheel on left side, monitor is startin flickering, because the monitor connection is broken. thats common, if you dont thrust your internal monitor, you can mirror the menu to your external monitor, so if the internal fails, you dont have a brick camera.
Could I just say as someone who has been here since the beginning, it's been really amazing seeing your channel grow so large so fast. I think the secret is that you just make great content and know what you're talking about and deliver everything with immaculate vibes. Cheers to an even more successful 2025!
Happy New year Jake! Keep up the great work!!❤

I would like to know which old Black Magic cameras this sensor has.
That's a URSA Broadcast, it's a 6K Pro Sensor in a URSA body.
so what the fuck is it?
Random specific question: Can the Ursa Broadcast G2 dual record to both CFAST cards? Love the vids man✌🏼
I'm trying to identify the focus knob on the side of the camera in the gem photo. That's a rig.
