I didn't realise people hated the Jim Carrey Grinch film so much...
It's probably pretty mixed. A lot of deep love and a lot of deep hate
@@WhyWeWatch1 agreed! im on the deep love side. such a strange movie.
I remember disliking it because:
1. It didn’t look very decent
2. I felt it was boring, especially in the backstory of the Grinch.
I can't say it's boring. Ron Howard and Jim Carrey are just too amped up
I love it.
I must admit that the jim carrey grinch is a huge guilty pleasure for me, I just love how strange and unnatural it is
I would say what i liked about the jim carrey one they knew what they wanted and told a moral about the true meaning of Christmas plus you got to know everyone in the grinch and they gave the grinch a better backstory than a enforced one that the 2018 one did
I also love Jim Carrey's Grinch.

my virtual school class says the Jim Carrey version is “scary” and that the 2018 version is better. Marlee needs to be saved.
its not scary its just pretty ugly
Nostalgically ugly. I like it.
The facial expressions were absolutely horrible. I just couldn't stand it! Maybe in a objective view the Grinch 2018 was inaccurate but I enjoyed it. It was a very good family Christmas movie that I genuinely have a connection with. The ending of the Grinch 2000 had no emotion. I felt nothing. Even as a little kid at that time, I didn't enjoy it. Nostalgia is probably the only reason you guys liked that movie. Usually, people always hate new things just for the sake of the fact that its new.
@@yasminnegash3968 I actually liked it significantly less when I was younger, so I don't think it's a nostalgia thing (for all of us.) For me it has to do with just how.. how much crackhead energy is in that show. And the visuals, ugly as they were, kind of felt fitting for a movie about an ugly angry guy in a crackhead christmas town. The movie is just so wild and weird and so perfectly awful and fitting for the perfectly awful character that is the Grinch. And I don't think they meant for it to be this way. I think they meant for it to be a quality movie, not a movie that's so trash it fits the story. But it doesn't really matter the intent, because no matter what, the wild, ugly, cheesy, chaotic mess that is that movie, is quite enjoyable to me. The story I don't really like.. but that applies to all the Grinch movies. It's really just the characters, the setting, and the visuals that do it for me.
@@yasminnegash3968 People hated the 2000s Grinch movie because it was new back then. I actually like the 2000s Grinch because of the special effects, the story, and the charm of the characters but did you know that Jim Carrey had a hard time trying to act while wearing the Grinch make-up? You know the make-up artist had more effort to make it more ugly as it can because that's pretty much the whole point of the Grinch's character.
I feel like the only illumination movie that is above average was Despicable Me, I actually liked that movie lol
yeah sadly that was the only movie they tried to tell a genuinely interesting story. it’s sad that they proved themselves capable to make an actual good film, but realized they could make way more money by not caring. such a shame.

Best regards, your viewers
I don’t understand why they hired Benedict Cumberbatch, and yet have him do a lame American accent. It wasn’t even an endearing American accent, he sounded so standard. Benedict is a great actor yet anybody could replace him here with that performance. What a waste of talent.
Update: okay so I was informed that the decision for the Grinch to have an American accent was Benedict’s idea, not the studio. I still think it was an odd choice by Benedict, but the studio did not mandate him to change his accent. There are other things to critique the studio on regarding their goal for the movie, the decision regarding the voice of the Grinch was NOT one of theirs.
Movies that know they’re not good always hire celebrities to voice act instead of getting actually talent or making a good movie.
Monroe I get that but Cumberbatch’s voice is so distinct and British, yet the people at illumination asked him to do a lame standard American accent. I wasn’t expecting Smaug levels of voice performing, but it doesn’t sound like him at all. Usually that’s a sign of a good voice actor to hide their actual voice, but here it feels like an actor not allowed to do his thing but more so executives telling what to do and what will sell.
STAR POWER
It sounded like he was trying really hard to keep the accent up instead of just act. I’d rather he Grinch just be British if it meant a better performance.
What's weirder is that this was Strange's idea, not the studio.

I already finished watching the Chuck Jones version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas and it's surprisingly a classic.
I legit binge the 60's cartoon, its the only one ill ever like.
The live action one really scares me so its a no for me-
MY MAIN CRITICISM:
In the 2018 adaptation of the Grinch, the Whos all accept the Grinch when he enters the town and they don't seem to mind him or throw glances. This is a problem to me because in the next scene- the grinch is standing on the mountain looking all sad just like in the 2000 Jim Carrey adaptation- it doesn't feel earned because the Grinch wasn't presented as misunderstood and it made me angry at the grinch more than the Whos. Because it seemed that he was being sad for no reason- because the Whos weren't dismissive or negative towards him at all. This, for me, made the Grinch's character feel unlikable. Anyone else see what I'm saying?
Yeah, you're totally right.
Yeah at least in the Jim Carrey Grinch, He wore a mask and blanket to hide himself from the whos but in the 2018 one, he was fine walking around with just a scarf and the whos were fine
I guess I could argue that the grinch's lonely emotions from his childhood got the better of him to the point where he sees them as selfish when in reality they are not.
I actually like this Grinch the least out of all the adaptations. Yes, it has its strong points like the animation, but the story, in my opinion is boring and uncreative. The characters are boring too. I like the Live action one the most. Not only is it hilarious and super quotable, but I think the way they express the theme is unique. Yes, the Who's think the Grinch is a monster through most of the movie, but they LEARN to be accepting and open. Just like the Grinch does. Both parties learn something. Just like life, no one is perfect and everyone can learn something new. And I love how Cindy, in the live action, is the one to carry this message forward. By simply showing faith in who the Grinch could be if the town accepted him.
I could go on and on but im going to stop here lol
Wait wait. There are people who DONT like the live action one???? Jim Carrey is a national treasure.

I may or may not have argued an extremely similar point in my English class over how the gronch as a character is much better than the fat jolly red Christmas man because the green goblin goober has much more depth and relatability than people give him credit for, especially compared to the soulless, impossibly perfect happy rojo elf-enslaver.

Yeah that was a bad take. I wasn’t expecting an over the top performance or anything but the Grinch just sounds like a guy. There’s nothing particularly interesting about his voice to set him apart form the rest of the cast. I think it’s important to give animated protagonists voices that stand out. Neither did I, Because the main issue of the other Grinchs is "Why do he hate christmas?" because in the original and the ilumination version it is not answered, but instead forcing you to assume that a very racist way. I know that grinch is creepy, but the point of that film is to show the "dark side of christmas"; I still prefer the animated design because i'm a fan of intense colours, but i can appreciate what they were going for.
@@N12015 Well in the 2018 one, All the whos don't seem to hate the grinch or don't treat him like a monster and you want to know why he hates christmas but for the wrong reasons. In the original, they don't show you why yes but you want to know why the Grinch hates the whos so much he will steal christmas from them but then realizes that christmas isn't about the presents but spending time with your love ones, while the Jim Carrey one does show you why he hated the whos, you start to feel sorry for him for being bullied for being different. Why should we feel sorry for the 2018 grinch when he is basically loved by the whos and we really have no other details to why he wants to steal christmas then he was an orphan.
How odd it is to see you here old friend.

I was watching the Jim Carrey version on Christmas eve after a while of not seeing it. It's actually bonkers how much effort was put into costuming. Cindy Lou had crazier hair in a live action than in the 2018 animated film with made up physics. I just seriously appreciate it.
Also, I understand the critique on the bland color palette of the movie, but I like it. It's like looking through the lens of the Grinch himself and seeing christmas as a bleak awful thing.
Hot Take?: I was absolutely on board with Benedict Cumberbatch as the Grinch. It makes perfect sense! His real voice is soooooo much like the original animation's Grinch. It's spot on.
And yet, they make him pitch his voice much higher and it becomes whiny. If they wanted that voice, they could have cast someone else. You had THE PERFECT GRINCH VOICE and they squandered it by making Cumberbatch do a different voice.
every my weird school book is adapted from you
I remember I saw this movie once when I was babysitting my niece and nephew and I gotta be real, it was ok. I didnt hate it as much as i thought it would. The visuals in particular are really nice to look at and honestly remind me of a small town I used to live in that went all out for Christmas and had parades and kinds of events. Which was kinda nostalgic. The movie itself is meh but I kinda liked how it reminded me of being a little kid again in a way
I preferred the Live action one. They gave him more backstory a reason for how he is that is relatable in a way.
He is ostredised by the town and they react realistically to his difference in appearance (to start of with) its sadly similar to our own society.
But mostly you see it's not just because the grinches heart is "2 sizes too small" he is emotionally blocked off and bitter for a reason. And we sympathise with him.
This animated movie just made me miss the live action. I felt like everything was too wholesome and they were no reasoning for anything. I also preferred the living conditions in the addition, much funnier ahaha.
That's just my opinion though I guess it depends on if you prefer wholesome or depressingly relatable movies that you laugh at so you dont cry heheh.

Opinions, my guy. Opinions.
honestly, what can you like about it apart from Jim Carrey?
I remember when I first saw this film, I found myself somewhat enjoying it yet at the same time I found it off putting but couldn’t put my finger on why.
Shortly after I decided to revisit the live action film to compare them. I want to point out when I first saw the live action film as a kid when it first hit VHS, I hated it, and never saw it again until my rewatch. As I saw the LA film, it hit me what I found wrong with the Illumination film. The Ron Howard film, despite a few questionable choices, you can tell a lot of ambition and passion was put into the film. The very elaborate detailed sets and costumes are proof of that. It was a genuine labor of love, like how the Chuck Jones cartoon was, and they did their best to try to come up with an expanded narrative that could fit a theatrical run time and it had heart, which is what is needed to make a Christmas story truly shine.
I have to agree with you, the Illumination version had some great things about it, but I feel what passion the animators did have in trying to make a good film, got lost somewhere along the way, and they got lazy and threw in whatever just to pad out the runtime. It’s like at some point during production someone said, “why are we putting all this effort into this movie? People are going to see it anyway cause it’s The Grinch. It will just print money like all of our other films.” Shame really.
So yeah, it’s kinda screwy illumination’s Grinch helped me find a newfound appreciation for the Ron Howard film. And the classic Chuck Jones cartoon will always be the definitive Grinch adaptation. I mean the man was actually friends with Dr.Seuss in real life, and wanted to do the books his friend wrote justice. The Illumination film I feel didn’t do enough to stand out from the shadow of the other adaptations.
Also, the Illumination Grinch just wasn’t Grinch-y enough. Just saying.
is he taking a break from videos?
My question for the movie is the scene when there was a sad looking orphanage but Whooville makes it seem like if theres nothing sad in there village
Soooo I had to come back to ask if we can get a “Do you remember Robots”
I actually really like the Jim Carrey Grinch. I remember growing up I always heard how it was terrible and a shame to Dr. Seuss but when I eventually watched it (at age 16 😎 because I don’t really watch movies often) I found myself strangely liking it. I thought a lot of the jokes landed, the characters were acted well, and I liked the message.
The message of the meaning of Christmas bejng misconstrued as giving material gifts instead of family and togetherness was well executed IMO. I liked how they actually kind of expanded on the Grinch’s backstory to explain why he hated Christmas and the woos, along with showing that the woos aren’t perfect one dimensional people who just love the grinch for no reason. I know a lot of the angles are kind of weird, the make up hasn’t aged the best, and that the movie is oddly grey (which even I noticed my first time watching), but I still really like the movie. I honestly think it’s a really good movie and I might even like it better than the original animated one.
The movie isn’t perfect I will admit that, but I think it does it’s job fairly well. Ywah it’s weird but it’s charming to me. Plus a lot of the jokes land which was surprising to me since I hardly ever laugh at jokes but I was like genuinely laughing out loud.

everybody when nick takes a break after almost a year of perfect on time uploads: *they had us in the first half*
did the live action grinch used to give anyone else nightmares when they were younger?????? just me???
you have not uploaded in a while are you taking a break?
Nick: "I invented nostalgia"
The word nostalgia comes from Greek and means, "pain from an old wound"
*Thanks a lot*
if i could adapt the grinch it would be about a priest who hates how commercialized x-mas is he goes out and steals all of the presents and goofs and gaffs ensue. i know its not the story of the grinch but its just a funny thought or a parody.
Am I the only one who LIKED the live action movie?
I was so scared of that movie as a kid lol
OMG me 2 for a little while now I am good.
You are one of my favorite youtubers and are a fantastic movie critic
Once you hear his voice, you can clearly hear he gave up on everything...
I actually like the live action...
