- Illumination's The Grinch (2018) is easily the WORST rendition of the character I have ever seen. Here's a 20 minute video explaining why.
By the way, Merry Christmas everyone! Hope the holidays are treating you well as the end of the decade quickly approaches. It's crazy to think that 2020 is right around the corner.

My biggest problem with this version is that the Grinch is way too nice and isn't all that mean. Say whatever you want about the Jim Carrey version, but at least that film knew that the Grinch has to be his most "Grinchiest" just so his kindness at the end was well earned.
Plus the live action Grinch movie was one big hilarious shit post. It was bad but it was still funny. Illumination's Grinch is so bland and flat and it misses the point of the Grinch so badly that it's genuinely ridiculous. Like how do you mess up a cruel, evil, disgusting monster and instead make him a dweeby, wannabe bad guy?
When the Grinch knocked the jar off the shelf, I half expected to hear "Huh, despicable me" afterwards.
_"Maybe Christmas he thought, doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more."_

It’s you
If only Illumination made that point clear in the film instead of having a modern twist on the classics.
The fact they ended on the screaming goat made me glad I didn't see it at the theaters. Not gonna lie, but that ending seemed to make this movie a whole lot worse then how the reception says.
I suppose the 2D Special is a prime example in which a 10 minute book doesn't need to be padded out to a 90 minute film. Basically, in sum, it's to the point.
So they ended on screaming Goat like Ralph forced it in WiR 2? Jesus, this makes me even more glad that Spiderverse won the Oscar.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but the Jim Carrey version is better. At least I can LAUGH at the awful choices that movie made.

We all can, especially those who genuinely enjoy it, like myself. :p
I can enjoy the Jim Carrey one even with that ugly abomination of a baby.

The WORST Grinch?!
I have to say yes. The problem with Illuminations Grinch is that it feels like any other animated movie you have seen everyhwere you go.
I actualy bought the DVD for the original animated movie and watching that 44 minute movie of the classic Dr. Seuss story is satasfying. I actualy do even like Jim Carrey's Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Granted the Whoville looks colorless and dead and the Who's themselves look kind of freakish, but Jim Carrey as The Grinch always stole the spotlight and that movie still understood the classic story and had some heart and passion put into it. Hell, Illumination's Grinch just walks around Whoville like nothing happens, but in the Jim Carrey version The Grinch had to disguise himself to actualy walk around the city, so that people don't freak out and cause a comotion that he is in the city. Even mentioning his name made the Who's panic in the Jim Carrey version of the film. The Illumination Grinch just feels like it's just doesn't care at all. The only thing I can say positive about the movie is how creative they went with Grinch stealing Christmas.
I like the book, the 60s special AND the 2000 movie. The 2018 film was just a waste of money.
I think another aspect that people forget is that the grinch disliked the whos gathering around afterwards and singing as “the thing he hates worst of all”. Yet the singing is EXACTLY the same thing that makes him realize what Christmas is to the point he actually brings everything back. In a way the singing is embracing the togetherness and love, and it could be argued that the grinch sees this as the most hypocritical act, after wallowing in the presents and food.
He was actually anticipating the whos to be CRYING. He changes because even through he thoroughly removed everything that he thought they had to celebrate over, they were still celebrating. So In a way he realizes it’s not hypocritical, it’s genuine.
Actually one thing I found bizarre with the live action take is that the grinch almost gives up rescuing the sled of gifts saying “well, they’re just presents” until he notices Cindy Lou is on the sled.
I mean, in the cartoon version, Max is still on the sled, and even if the grinch treats his dog like a slave, I don’t think he’d let Max fall over the edge along with the sled, even if he DIDNT get redeemed. The sled was tipping over cause in his shock he let go of Max and the sled was going over as a result.
(Also Max was a slave who barely liked the grinch, and did what he wanted cause of course, he’s a loyal dog who has no real say in anything. He wasn’t Gromit helping Wallace get ready for the day)
It also should be noted that in the Halloween special, Max actually LEAVES the Grinch. Don't know if that counts as continuity but it should be noted that even by that time, he realized that Max would have had enough of the Grinch's shit and left him on his own accord.
And as for the singing, that is one of the few things I disliked about the live action remake and that was putting the Whos' better mentality squarely on Cindy-Lou. I mean, part of me understands WHY they did it since even with her small role in the cartoon, she's always been central figure of the story. I just didn't like that in the live action film, they made her the only 'smart' one when the book and the original special showed that all of them got together and she more or less stood in as the actual vessel for the Grinch to come into contact with to see that himself. The first run DVD of the live action movie had a cut scene where they DID film the Who's crying over their lost presents and it was awful, because it defeated both the points of the book and the cartoon; the Grinch is 'defeated' because the Whos' don't let him defeat them if that makes any sense. He is waiting in anticipation to hear them cry but the original cut of the movie he got exactly what he wanted and in the end it didn't matter if Cindy did eventually get them to sing; he still won.
So it makes sense why they cut that scene down but it still bothered me that the movie had the Whos commercialized anyway only to have Cindy's DAD of all people be the one to give the final say in everything when it kinda feels like even he didn't earn that moment? I mean, for the most part Cindy's family are just side-joke characters with her being the only central Who aside from the Mayor and that other lady so....why the dad even after it felt like the entire movie there was no real connection between them aside from him sort of relaying, and not very well, what the Grinch was.
I mean, I still like the live action version because of Carrey but aside from that, the rest of the movie is incredibly BLOATED. But it's still better than this!
@@SuperCosmicMutantSquidI don't know if Grinch Night is a continuation, I always imagined it was an alternate universe deal.
Basically they turned him into Gru.
Something that made me predict that it will happen was when he destroyed the snowman of a boy something like when gru popped the ballon of a boy
This Grinch is way too soft and he isn't menacing I've seen Squidward angrier.
I found this movie to be insanely boring, like, really really boring. Dear god and there doing a mario movie.
i hear nintendo will have control over it so it might not be that bad
I haven’t watched Illumination’s most recent films because I’m afraid of supporting a company that makes films as cheap and safe as possible.
Never has the phrase “Trying to appease everyone appeases no one” been more true than with this co.
The only good thing from illumination was Despicable me.
Yup
This movie will be a forgotten mess in 20 years
I just watched the live action grinch in my class today
Hey I made that thumbnail ♡ nice job babe, this came out great!
I don't understand the whole orphan backstory at all, cause its not even written coherently. It implies that hes the one last grinch to exist in who-ville, and nobody wanted him bc i guess grinches are gross to adopt but if all the children had been adopted but him where was the headmaster/mistress or caretaker at the orphanage to notice that a child didnt get adopted? hes literally neglected without proper reason bc they never mention a caretaker and orphanage's arent run by children alone. If the whole town is so close knit as the movie implies, why did nobody care to say "hey one child is left!" Maybe this was to emulate the live action's story of him being different, but at least the live action version had some explanation for him being different to the whos and not even the old ladies adopting him had no clue where this green baby came from.
Also what I really dislike about the start of the movie is how they try to play off him being grumpy and depressed as "relatable" humor as if to say "hahaha look hes depressed and hes eating large amounts of food!"
100% in agreement, I have the exact same issues with his backstory.
100% in agreement, I have the exact same issues with his backstory.
The film was beyond bland and boring, it was a water down version of what made the Grinch and the Who's unique. Say what you will about the live action film (which I personally actually enjoyed tbh for all it's padding) but at least that film stayed true to theme and characters of the book and animated special.
I’m really liking these animated movie reviews you’ve been making!
Thank you!
You’re welcome! Are more a possibility?
@@vincent1935 Absolutely, I want to do more in the future for sure!
I rather watch the live action version
I hate the fact the grinch (2018) has this bright green unlike the 1966 and live action version
So this grinch is basically the opposite of "r/niceguy"
IMO, the only thing at least good in this movie is it’s visual, I really do love how atmospheric it feels at times. It ain’t no chuck jones, but it does look nice of how Christmas-like it looks! Also, Tyler the Creator’s Christmas album. But yeah, it’s pretty dull and underwhelming for the most part.
At best this was a decent flick , while I wouldn't say it's my favorite suess adaptation , I'd still pick Horton hears a who or the Jim Carrey version of the Grinch ,but for illumination attempt to revitalize of this story it was pretty alright.😁👌
Tyler the creator is the rapper for this and I have no fucking clue why he's here.
He's got talent and I can't deny that, but this is nowhere near his best work.
Only goddamn reason to watch this is to hear Benedict's voice. But then again, I can also watch him as my favorite superhero in Dr. Strange and have the added bonus of NOT wanting to gouge my brains out. If anything I go into a hypothetic trance cause he's got quite a hot actor. So...while I'm happy Benedict got enjoyment outta this, I'd rather wait for Dr. Strange 2 thank you very much.
If you want a good CGI Suess flick I suggest Horton Hears a Who! from Blue Sky. Besides the addition of a few extra characters it’s really faithful to the book, plus we get to see an expanded look at Whoville, which is a plus.
Illumination adapt the new ppg. The ultimate weapon
Jimmy Carry’s grinches hat looks like one of those hats navy sailors have to show what ship they served in. Is the Grinch a Veteran and did The Who’s and the Grinches have a war. Just having fun but dang imagine.
Also you said you don’t want to make a video of “Teen Titans Go is the worst” because most people made those videos, but you made a video of “why the Grinch is the worst” even though everyone else made that video
How do I watch the original adaptation that’s 2D?
This movie did manage to accomplish something. Thanks to it, the live action version is only the second-worst adaptation of The Grinch.
I'd still rather watch the Chuck Jones version, though.
Epic video
Let's be honest: this movie is more about cindy who, and just have a grinch there
Thats not the real grinch doesn't eat trash.
Micheal bay may not be an incredibly stiry driven director but his movies are a technical masterclass
6:12 *Hmmm...I wonder why?*
Yay! I'm early
Damn, that's trash.
Despite the song and design 2019 ginch was a new take on the original the more reliable personality instead of an angry dog abusing monster his a more reliable loner who just Needed to be talk to people consider how long he was total isolation for years
The 2018 grinch is better
Not better than the 1966 version but I feel like it’s a tie between the 2000 live action film and the 2018 illumination film.
I love the (2018) Grinch, it more better then the Jim Carry version.
No its very disappointing! >:(
Live action grinch movie gets extra points for having the voice of zim say the classic line “this is not pudding”
I haven't watched the video yet, but no matter what you say I do have to admit that this version of The Grinch got me to sympathize with him- I even cried a bit at when he let the reindeer?cow? go with her family. I won't pretend that it's a masterpiece, & I don't recall everything, but for an Illumination Film they have done worst films.
OG: A Timeless Classic
Live Action: It’s strange, it’s bizarre, and has lots of cruel humor. My kind of guilty pleasure
CGI: It’s just boring, dull, and bland. What a wasteful cast for Benedict Cumberbatch.
I agree that I rather take Jim Carrey Version than Benedict Cumberbatch Version anyday because at least it has something to be entertain. The only good thing about Illumination’s take is the animation is pretty to look at but that’s about it.
That sums up the majority of Illumination's movies. They look pretty but that's about it.
@@stephenwells6434 all of illuminations work we call gunches
I love your pfp
I’m really nervous what Illumination is gonna have for a Mario Movie. I’m a huge Nintendo fan and next to Pokemon, Mario is my favorite video game franchise for how fun, creative, and imaginative their games are. I’m not asking for a Mario movie to be in the same quality as say like Pixar or Studio Ghibli, I just want it to be fun and entertaining instead of being so bland and boring.
@@firemaster9293 I know, we just got videogame movies out of the garbage hole it was sinking from.
Considering this is the same company that slaps their movies' characters onto any kind of merchandise they can think of, I'm not surprised that Illumination's Grinch barely touches the commercialization and materialism of Christmas. If they criticized that stuff, then people will be dissuaded from buying their Grinch-themed Christmas merchandise.
Jim Carrey's Grinch is better Don't Change My Mind
Yeah but we all know that the original cartoon is far superior than any of them.
Speaking of detail, you're right. They made him too clean. Look at his home. It looks AMAZING. That's not the type of set up you'd get from someone who is essentially a hermit who hates the world and puts assumptions on others before realizing that he was way off base. (points to the first special and the book!) That's why the Carry version worked so well in design and costume. They more or less HYPED the illustrations and animation of both the book and the Jones' special to make it look REAL but at the same time it gave off a cartoony feel to it which is what I love, when you can mix both reality and fantasy together. Granted, the Carry pad still looked awesome but that was BECAUSE Of how messy it was, not how PERFECT it was.
In the new version, everything is so damn sorted and clean. It looks like a HIPSTER CAVE and I'm not even joking. I mean, hell! Look at Max's little set up! It's like a perfect little bunk and the Grinch even gave him a padded mattress and a curtain to keep him warm!
THE GRINCH TREATED HIS DOG LIKE SHIT....WHICH I am not supporting by the by but again...DETAILS. We're supposed to SEE that everything around the Grinch is as messy and as nasty as he is. But they missed that point and...yeah.
The only thing more horrifying than the live-action Grinch baby is the Funko Pop version of the 2018 Grinch baby.
Seriously though, I hate the fact that this film is practically made up of _nothing_ . Yeah, adapting the original version to a full length feature film (again) is going to involve some padding, but I would be fine with it so long as it had some sort of substance or added bits of interesting story-telling. To me, the live-action version did this well when they added those extra interactions between the Grinch and Cindy Lou, two individuals who were sick of the commercialism of Christmas for different reasons. Here, we just have more "safe" jokes and sub-plots that don't really add anything. It's a shame that those take priority over showing a plausible motivation for the main antagonist.
Well, at the very least they weren't running promotions with cars and plastering ads on disposable popcorn buckets for a movie who's main message dealt with environmentalism. And at least this wasn't as bad as the live-action Cat in the Hat...though that's not really an impressive accomplishment.
Original animation: utterly beautiful art
Live action movie: pretty decent if you consider it more like a parody
Illumination: fuck you
This Grinch looks so dull compared to old Grinch. Not to come off as a cranky old man who hates everything new, but at least old grinch looked mean, creepy, and generally unpleasant and unkind. This one, looks very very boring, like some bootleg plush you’d find in a carnival game. Also, I’d hate to see what Illumination has in store for yet another Minion movie and the Mario movie. Like we needed another one of those. Worked so well the last time didn’t it?
Man, when they make a version of the Grinch that makes the Nostalgia Critic appreciate the Jim Carrey version a lot more (despite that he’s not a fan of that version), you know they messed up.
The moment I knew that Illumination is working on the movie, I knew they’re going to mess this one up. From the trailers and a lot of scenes, Illumination really just made this movie as Despicable Me lite than the Grinch. Good thing Warner Bros. is now going to be in charge of the upcoming Dr. Seuss movies (given their track record of great movies like Happy Feet and the LEGO Movie) and if any indication of how good the Green Eggs and Ham Show (made by WB and Netflix), it looks like Dr. Seuss’ movies are in the right direction.
My biggest issue with this movie is just how dull this thing was when I watched it and I only did so when there was literally nothing else at the time to watch.
The live action Grinch was at the very least funny. It had a personality attached to it.
the live action film was funny AND used the additions to its story to attempt to further strengthen its message by showing the who's really were self-absorbed ninnies who needed the lesson as much as the Grinch did, and that the Grinch did indeed have sparks of good in him that had been broken down by his bitterness and hatred
@@sarafontanini7051 It's still three hours too long and the greyness is a little offputting, but at the very least IT'S BETTER THAN THIS.
0:55 at least PIXAR has talented animators who work constantly with incredible stories with great animation however unlike Illumination has cutesy characters that rely on pop culture references and pop tunes that felt dated pretty quickly so yeah Illumination is like Michael Bay just replace explosions with those GOD DAM Annoying Minions
This is why I am worried about the Super Mario movie that Illumination somehow got a hold off to make. Somehow someway they convinced Nintendo to make a Mario movie despite the Live action movie made Nintendo steer clear from video game movies.
Oh come on,detective Pikachu and sonic are saving the video game movie genre and Mario is going to ruin it. Why Nintendo why?
Tbf detective pikachu was good but not the best. It still uses many tropes modern adaptations use. Game adaptations just suck in general. Probably because the franchise is getting more effort out into it than the movie.
The only caviar I can offer you is this. Nintendo has a tight leash on Illumination's production of the film. Meaning they can't pull their usual shit without the big N's permission.
I literally just finished watching this movie, how can you read my mind?
Uh... lucky guess?
The original is fun and memorable. This one is bland and forgettable.
@Grumpy Mama
And it didn't need to be. I mean think about it, it's been nineteen years and whenever The Grinch comes up in discussion the merits and failings of the Ron Howard take make their way into said discussion...
You have nostalgic Millennials like me pointing out what it did right, while you have the detractors pointing out what it did wrong.
We could've had that with this version had any effort to make it unique yet familiar to the original story been made. But since Illumination played it safe, here we all unanimously saying how safe, bland, boring, and forgettable it was...
Looking back, this iteration should have been it's own thing with no connection to the Grinch whatsoever. And I agree with the general consensus, Illumination is safe and lukewarm with its projects to the point of forgettable.
the carrey grinch still had many qualities of the book character, including some memorable quotes, including the complaints about the 'noise, noise, NOISE!'. Illumination grinch I don't think even tries. The carrey grinch ALSO criticised the commericalisation of christmas, it wa sjust....LESS subtle about it.
On the brighter side of things at least we got Green Eggs And Ham on Netflix and who knows; will might get a better Grinch either way. But for now; Illumination truly needs to stay away from these Dr. Seuss books for alittle while before they touch the Star Belly Sneetches or Daisy Head Maisy as their next Cash Cows like they did to The Lorax but ALOT more worse with It's merchandise so consider himself lucky but not this new movie though, they totally caught him In his tracks.
Also I'm still mad that still had to replace that catchy yet slight decent song cover of The Grinch with another lazy rap cover, that truly made me wanna throw stale fruitcake on the moron who came up with that Idea for marketing purposes.
The new grinch song was so bad, I had to run round my house in anger to stop me from being angery, AND I HATE RUNNING!!! >:|
14:53 why the Hell would they include a screaming Goat that doesn't belong in the Grinch

Because internet meme funny. Just ask WiR 2 and everything that makes me want to punch a kitten in the face about that movie! 8D

Live Action Grinch was the first version of the Grinch I ever saw lol
Dammit Illumination, you found a way to make the Jim Carrey version look good.
You made the gunch you illumination monsters
Illumination:it's because I'm green isn't it?
I watched this film and 4 others when I was on a plane ride from the Philippines, and I gotta say that Illumination's version of the Grinch is just mediocre and forgettable
Tbh this version of the grinch seems more depressed than a grouch
I am so god damn proud of you for that opening.
I knew I'd live up to your expectations B)
Also the other ones the who's either were mean to the grinch and made him into an outcast or in the original you felt her was an actual outcast that truly hated the who's so you felt a sort of resentment towards them to bc he never had any socialization with them. In this one they were very welcoming and accepting which made no sense why he hated them. Like I get his childhood was lonely but it raises questions on how was that possible in the first place
i honestly didn't like the illumination version of the grinch. i mean him being an orphan is a fine idea yet in the live action one he was mistreated, bullied and during the happiest moment in most kids lives i.e christmas. was the worst memory for him, so his hatred for christmas made sense. in the illumination he was an orphan yet it was never explained why he was never adopted. everyone who sees him in whoville is polite to him, smiling inviting him to things. no one is rude or mean so him not being adopted made zero sense. plus with cindy wanting her mom to get a break would of had more weight if cindy realized she should be the one to help her mom. sorry but every scene cindy was in, she was leaving her mom to do other stuff, never realizing if she stayed and helped her mom cook breakfast or took care of her younger siblings. her mom wouldn't be so tired, i really didn't like this version of cindy lou. she was oblivious to a simple solution to her mom's problem. as for the climax my favorite is the live action, grinch is about to give up thinking it is just toys right, yet when he sees cindy lou ontop of the sled wanting to be with him on christmas so he wouldn't be alone. seeing her in danger it was one of my favorite scenes. so yeah the live action might be weird at times yet it holds the same value as the original material in my opinion. illumination sadly misses the mark heavily.
The ironic thing about"minion house"? Illuminate means hawing an idea,"seeing the light"yet:"the lights are not all on upstairs!" ;)
Illumination's animation is bland dull and between The Lorax and The Grinch they should STOP making Dr.Suess animated movies

Fun fact: There was actually a finish design that looked like his book, animated short, and live action counterparts but they switch to the design we have in the final version a year before the movie was released
Should we really ever trust Illumination Studios to make anything good?
Will you make the PPG Season 2 shorts review?
I watched this in theaters with my family. You don't understand how tempted I was to theater hop to a better movie.
same. it was so boring and hard to sit through
I lowkey like the Jim carry version for some strange reason, though I cringe at some parts.
I see they haven't learned Jack from the lorax. The exact same flaws are in both movies;
-visual decisions that undermine characters
-throwing out any subtle or thought provoking messages for simple minded stories we've seen so many times before
-shifting main characters personalities from any sort of interesting to one note that ultimately makes the character development feel undeserving or way less significant
-stupid pop culture references
-unnecessary sideplots that don't add anything interesting and again, push the simple af storytelling
-tell don't show
With the only saving grace being the animation, because we need to make this marketable. At least with the lorax though we got meme O'hare, even if he is a one note villian with the subtlety of air bottles.
Now I’m kinda glad I didn’t see this movie 😅 but really I was never really a grinch fan so I probably wouldn’t wanna see it anyway. Oh well hehe!!! 💙💖
Although I actually do like the secret life of pets franchise if I’m gonna be completely honest. I’ll admit it’s not AMAZING but I don’t think it’s as bad as other people think it is. 😅
Ok seriously though why does it seem like most pop songs recently are rapping and spewing THE N-WORD left and right??? Pft one day as I was walking into school a car was blasting music like that and the security guard at the door said “boi that ain’t my child” 🤣

In regards to the music, I think it In itself is fine and possibly really good, simply because of the artist that made it, Tyler the creator started as a super toxic offensive artist that made a 180 after falling into the persona and came out of it a better person. I feel he's most fitting for the grinch. His harsh voice is also really off putting and I think it makes for a nice "modern" spin on the song. ANYTHING outside of the music and its usage I completely agree with you.
Does anyone know why this new grinch has WHITE teeth?😅
Side note, but I hate how Illumination designs dogs. It just looks bad and uncomfortable. Otherwise, I had to watch this in theaters with my sisters, and I was so bored.
I don't like how they design their characters in general I think they can make their backgrounds look good but not characters though.

nah Shadow Streak. this is no longer The WORST Grinch. that honor goes to The Mean One. a terrible horror movie that turns The Grinch into a demon from hell or a serial killer murdering people, all because some guy out there that made this movie saw Pooh being misused for this and wanted to do the same for the Grinch
The Illumination Grinch is voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, the guy who played as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as Smaug in the Hobbit trilogy
also I hate dispicable me
Illumination when they made The Grinch: I couldn’t care less, this was about money!
I don't get this weird side story with random idiots and cindy lou catching santa but i hate when illumination makes this story worse when it's the OG but with the outdated jokes and dumb side story and a shiny teeth with the grinch not even evil.
The live action version was the first one I saw but I’d like to find the original animated one just to experience it🙂
