I really thought I was going to play horizon 4 at 60 FPS but the motion blur is so well done at 30 FPS and the frame rate is so consistent that I prefer the 4K mode with the extra visual flourishes. Gears of war 4 on the other hand was so much better at 60 fps. I can’t wait for next gen when we’ll finally (hopefully) not have to choose one or the other on consoles.
Ultrawide 120 or 144 fps 3440x1440 is the absolute sweetest spot and most immersive I think. As long as you have 3 or 4 grand to drop on a rig and alienware, lg or Samsung monitor that is of course
I find it difficult to play forza horizon 4 at 30fps. Tried it on my brothers Xbox one. Too much input delay. Sometimes I’m late on my turn in causing me to lose the race. If you race with A class or higher(assuming you’re not wall riding or engine upgrades only) in unbeatable difficulty+ no assists, you need 60+ FPS
30fps or 60fps, just ensure that's the primary focus. But really, "performance first" pretty much sums it up. Bollocks to resolution, take what you can get an be happy with it.
Been saying it since the release of these mid-gen consoles. 1080p 60fps over 4k 30fps every time. Sure 4k looks nice but basically everything else feels and looks better at 60fps. Gameplay at 60fps is just 100x more enjoyable, and since we play games not watch them 60fps only makes sense.
from my point of view, 60 fps really only matters in FPS games. I have RDR 2 for my xbox one x, play it on my 85 inch 4k tv, it looks fucking gorgeous and the game obviously runs in 30 fps but I would not trade that beauty for 60 fps.
It should be an option, I just cant play 60fps it just looks horrid to me. Plus the low res on a 4k tv its VERY blurry. I had to return it as I just couldnt play it
Rage 2 has better mechanics in my opinion especially playing them back to back because rage 1 is on game pass now. The special abilities and lighting fast gameplay is hypnotic to me at least very similar to doom.
@John Doe No one is saying 4K is bs. We're just all saying that we would much rather use these older ( "junk" lmao) consoles at 1080p60fps than 4k30(barely)fps. I own a 1080p/60hz monitor, 1440p/144hz, and a 4k panel. Guess which I use for my Xbox X?
I’d pick framerate / graphical fidelity over resolution any day. I have a 55” 4K TV & and Xbox X and I don’t see any difference between that and my OG PS4 as I sit 2.5 meters away from the TV. 4K only truly matters if you’re up close to your TV/monitor which is why it’s so important for PC gamers.
@All my heroes are villains I run 1440p. It's literally a pain in my ass to change out to a 4K monitor just to watch a Bluray. If I could go back in time I'd unbuy my 4K display and only buy the 1440p. But I wanted the "true experience" all these fucking commenters made to be some magical thing. It's not and it's at 30fps on the consoles MAX.
This game is a perfect candidate for next gen to see it really shine. Anyways PC has their backs with 4K 60+. But I get that they made the right decisions to deliver
"Rather heavy on the GPU" is an understatement, my machine sounds like it's preparing for takeoff as soon as the game starts. It's a good looking game, but it's not *that* good looking which makes me think something isn't quite right.
You can take the cover off of the top tier of the Pro and clean the fan easy. Opening the bottom tier of the Pro you can get to the Heatsink to clean it but you have to take out the Motherboard to get to it which is the problem. The dirty Heatsink is the main reason why your Pro is performing the way it is with the loud noise. Hope that helps.
@@bonesbrigader What are the risks for cleaning up the inside of the system? My Pro is 4 months old so I don't think it's time for clean up yet, but, it's inevitable for dust build up. Is there a filter I can use to prevent it from getting clogged?
@@jessomadcity2815 I don't know of any filter you could use but i do know keeping your system off the ground (Why anyone would do that in the first place os beyond me) and keeping the area around your system free of dust helps. Also investing in a $30 black and decker dust buster for electeonics to suck out the dust from the intakes instead of blowing it inward. Or any other mini vacuum you can get your hands on. The latest PS4 pro's were made to be quieter so if you keep ir dust free on a daily basis you should be ok. If you simply dust the area around your systen often you should be fine.
As far as the risks of opening your system you won't null and void the warranty by opening the top tier to clean the fan but opening the bottom to get to your heatsink will void the warranty. There are plenty of walkthrough videos you can find when providing maintenance.
Finally something to be impressed by, good stuff Avalanche. Really nice to see a open world game cater to 60fps still have so many technical features, although blurry I think it's a pretty good achievement
It's very annoying that the viewmodel/weapon FOV does not change by changing the base FOV, because it's extremely low, especially on an ultrawide monitor.
Some devs lock the weapon fov so we couldn't see clipping. Duke Nukem Forever is a good example, if you use the max fov you see cuts in the weapon where nothing is draw, a real mess. But there is always modders who make weapon fov mods for most games.
Why I love PC. I can adjust settings and upgrade hardware to get 60fps+ (do have 144hz 1440p monitor with freesync) or turn off certain effects (motion blur im talking about you) and other settings I don't like to get the look I want and experience. Console I am limited to the options of the developers and limits of the hardware.
@@dk06ctr Actually you're right! The option to have either 1080p/60fps or 4K/30 or maybe 1080p/30&improved visuals or something like that would be even better!! But most of the Devs stick to only 1 choice (4K/30fps) which sucks. If it's only one choice then i would prefer 60fps aaaaaaaaaaall the way!!!
Performance should be always preferred over eye-candy, beautiful graphics. Thanks ID Software and avalanche studio for having such high understanding of video games.
Because I want 4K, I have switch from the Xbox One X version to the PC version for Rage 2 ! I would prefer that there is an OPTION in the X version of Rage 2 to allow me to CHOOSE either 4K 30fps or 2K 60fps (graphic mode or performance mode) ! All games should includ a choice like this, it is not to the the developpers to impose their choice, but to the final consumer/customer to have the choice in the Options Menu. We have not the same ideas/whises and they must be equally traited... There is no good or bad, a simple question of what is important for YOU.... ;-)
Absolutely love the framerate on the Pro (and Xbox One X). Game would still be very fun at 30fps, but the 60fps really magnifies the awesomeness of the great gameplay! :) Really enjoying it right now. Even with 10 or more enemies on screen, explosions and objects flying around with the great feeling physics, it still stays super fluid for most of the time. Good stuff.
Hey Digital Foundry. Can you check the grapical downgrade in Red Dead Redemption 2? In 1.00 patch the lighting by Valentine General Store looks better than in 1.09 patch. And im not sure the Ambient Occlusion and textures are back in the original quality, like in the 1.00 patch.
IF the 60fps is fairly stable like it is on Pro and X than I will choose 1080p over 4k30 any day of the week for sure. Glad they went that route for the enhanced consoles. Most developers would've kept it locked 30fps both ways just because its easier but props for these guys making the good effort.
I agree here with John at the end. I don’t understand why most Avalanche Studio games don’t have HDR. Just Cause 3 and Rage 2 have such vibrant color pallets that could look even better if HDR was supported. I really hope these two games in particular get an HDR Patch some day
I really enjoyed the first rage, but it seems that this one isn't going for the same rpg feeling that had interactive unique npc in cool towns, cities and multiple mini games. Also loved the waifus from Rage 1.
Been playing it on PC,as I did with the 1st Rage( i5 9400f,RTX 2080 XC ULTRA,2x16Gb,Intel 660p nvme,BenQ PD3200Q 1440P ) its a blast, and very good looking on my older IPS screen at 1440p,but wish the texture res was even higher, and yes the lighting is very good looking.I loved the original, but this is much better.
I am aswell but I do find especially in this game it's very soft n rather blurry unless right on top of objects.. n I think if pro can do 1080p 60fps surely xbox X can do a slightly higher res as is fair bit more powerful.
@Sheldon Cooper81 - It was a graphical masterpiece. It was the first time in my life I had ever played an open world game at 60fps. Rage 1 felt so next gen at the time. I never thought an XBOX360 game could look so beautiful. And one of the main reasons for this is because Rage 1 was running at 60FPS.
Selim Nazar on a technical level it wasn’t.....it was open world and ran at 60fps on PS3 and 360.....a frame rate that isn’t even that common on these enhanced consoles
Rage 1 on my pc in 4k ultra at 60fps looks better to me,I just prefer the look of the characters and the details and sky look better also. This looks more Ubisoft like it’s hard to explain and it’s the way I see it,can’t believe it’s so many years since the last one!
Thanks for the coverage! I miss the times when we had something fancy like - a choice: Performance/Resolution on the mid-gen consoles. I even heard that some developers were able to implement dynamic resolution or something odd called HDR. But hey we have some nice and super agressive TAA without a sharpening filter. Yay!
I think i might pick this up. But i just can't stop thinking about a doom-esque type Rage 2 developed primarily by ID and assisted by avalanche. Similar to the first one with no open world but seamless levels all with perfect lighting. Would also allow for 1440p / 60 on the strong consoles and 900p/60 fps on base consoles. I remind you Doom in 2016 achieved this. I've heard that the open world is bland, so a sprawling linear game would suit me fine, especially as the vehicular combat looks subpar compared to say, Mad Max 2015.
No it couldn’t. It’s a 2010 laptop jaguar cpu. They would have to downgrade the graphical fidelity heavily if they wanted to shoot for 1400p 60fps. It’s an open world game. Remember that.
1000x yes. If it's an FPS, I would much rather prefer framerate. I would almost even rather play at 720p at 120fps. The biggest thing being input lag. I can't even play Overwatch on my Laptops 60hz panel anymore. Aiming just feels bad compared to how it feels on my 120hz monitor.
As always it is a user preference thing and I am most likely the exception here, but going from the beautiful IQ of Days Gone at 30fps 'faux k' rez on my 55 inch hdr screen to Rage 2's 1080p SDR 'somewhat 60fps' temporal blurryness was not a welcome comparison to my eyes! Although it is obviously extra effort for the dev, as the end user I would always prefer to be given the option to choose resolution over framerate in the settings. Shadow of the colossus was a premium example of how effective being given this option on a console can be.
@@nighttimestalker 1080 would look blury on a 1440p display since it doesnt divide equally. 1080p is still more or less enough for me although I won't turn my nose up at 4K either. As for 60fps. I do prefer it over 30 but I don't see it as the be all and end all that some people do. So depending on the game I would probably on average pick 60fps over 4K 6 or 7 out of 10 times.
@@PicksterTG I play on a 43in 4k tv 1080p is very soft. But I'll take the blurry 1080p over something like dragon age Inquisition.. it has little to no AA on Console and it's a shimmering nightmare on X lol
@@raiden_pb I still dip into ladt gen games. It doesn't take me long to adjust to the lower resolution that tends to sit at 720p. Would probably be annoying if it was right on top of a 60+ inch TV... on a switch screen 720p is plenty enough for me. As always, more is better but I'm ok with what ever level I can adjust to and it not continue to overwhelm the experience.
Sure it is always best to have couple of options in the game it should be standard. Saying that i am on 60fps side of thinking especially considering type of the game this one is
great detail video, but would be interesting to see, how much of a people would notice all these nuances (temporal AA, tearing, minor fps drop, or 60vs30 fps), without actually looking up such detailed videos, and articles about it, and complain about it
That combo is more powerful than the "enhanced" consoles. So you being able to hit that target is a given, you're probably playing at higher settings than them as well.
@@bradhaines3142 No, the X has something akin to a RX480/580 which is comparable to a 1060. Don't just look at TFLOP numbers as AMD's chips perform worse than Nvidia.
Brad Haines hahah 1070 hahahah it’s about the same as an amd 480/580. Teraflops do not calculate the same from amd to nvidia. The 1070 is way way more powerful. The ps5 is only now targeting vega56 performance and that’s around the same as a 1070.
The 1060 is not a bad card and I5s are still more than adequate. However, the X and your rig comparison is difficult. For 4k your rig might perform worse for 1080p probably better.
Rage two is absolutely gorgeous, the foliage looks bonkers and how it shifts in 60fps with the light going down in desert scene makes the game look so good on 1080p and 4k, but what matters is 1080p 60fps or 8k 60fps 4k the black sheep.
Well if there is older gamer than 14 years old (I am 28 years old), back in the day I preffered higher resolution and higher graphics over the performance... We tuned games just to able to play it, most of them worked on 15 fps 1024x768, while 1280x1024 was TOP NOTCH ON CRT screens!!! Years after years, dual core processors became mainstream, same as dx 10 and dx 11 gpu's, with 1080p screen, and now there is not a such a big difference between 1080p and 2k and 4k like back in the day between 640x480, 800x600 1024x768 and 1280x1024, most common monitor size is 21.5-24 inch (and for tv is 30-42, but viewing distance is longer than for pc gaming), so it is highly preffered performance (60 or more fps at 1080p) over than resolution (4k 30 or even less fps)... Most improtant is graphics and textures inside the game engine though... When graphics textures are crap (even at highest settings), even 8k resolution is useless... 4k resolution will become relevant since we will have 4k 60fps high ultra gaming gpu for 200$ (like we have rx 580 for 1080p) cheers.
I adored the first game, despite its flaws it just felt right. I also applaud the decision to put performance first and hope this is a sign of things to come. There’s nothing like a finely tuned piece of software!
That barren map and clunky laggy menu absolutely takes away any benefits of no loading screens and 60 fps.Why have 60 fps only in brief encounters, would of been better suited to increase resolutions and 30 fps to take in the open world.Leave 60 fps for corridor shooter's and online competitive Multiplayer
I really enjoy the 60fps and the option to turn motion blur on the PS4 pro. I dislike that, depth of feild effects, screen shaking, and screen splatter. Hope to see these basic settings in future console games. PS I do have a PC and I always turn off those particular settings if possible. Thanks for the in depth breakdown on the Apex engine, good information for any gamer to pick up on. Side note that xboxonex is very consistent with performance in most of these platform test, very impressive system.
60 FPS on the high end consoles is a better enhancement than resolution only. Going back and forth between the consoles here, the 30 FPS looks so sluggish in comparison. So much nicer with higher frame rate.
True but X and Pro versions are too similar. The devs didnt try to utilize the X additional power. And I dont mean the X could have done 4k 60 but if the Pro and the X are soo close then the devs probably could have done more
The most hardware intensive scenes I've seen so far are actually in some of the MBTV stages. I think it's because of the fact that the entire floor of many of them has water on it which means the GPU is having to deal with a huge amount of dynamic Screen Space Reflections almost constantly, as well as all of the different alpha effects In the scenes from lights and pyrotechnics.
@Raios Rogue - Of course they believe it, and so do I. Framerate/performance is much more important than graphics. Of course, ideally, one would want to play 4k at 60fps. But no console can do that at this point.
@@123doomdoom 2 years ago? 🤗 anyway yes, some games run in 4k at 60fps, maybe the PS5 pro will be able to run everything at that resolution and that speed lol
As a PRO and a One X owner i was disappointed to hear there was no 4k 30fps mode. But then i thought atleast we will have HDR. To hear it doesnt have HDR makes this a no sale from me. This lools like the perfect game for HDR. Seems mad not to have it. Shame.
@Sursurk There's actually quite a lot. Specifically, last generation was defined by UE3, but UE4 isn't nearly that important this generation. There's a dozen propietary engines written by a studio for themselves and used in one or two games this generation. Maybe it's because UE4 needs too much CPU time.
The Apex Engine is amazing though! At least, in terms of visuals. I don't think there are many games (if any) that look better than Hunter: Call of the Wild.
Honestly just in terms of general graphics atmosphere, I think the first Rage looks better, it just looks very...raw I guess. Sure the textures may be softer, but they have a strong personality to them, same with the baked lighting. Baked lighting isn't some bad thing just because it isn't advanced, I mean AC Unity has some of the best interior lighting...ever. , I wish Rage 2 was more like Rage 1 but ramped up a little, Rage 2 has an entirely different personality.
H_MAN42 it looks like that on all consoles but the main reason is that it’s an entire OPEN WORLD game that pushes for a 1080p 60 fps experience its taxing on the hardware
Yeah it's very demanding so it's just the way it's optimized, he says this several times in the video. Those are the sacrifices that have to be made. I play on regular Xbox, plays great, looks like an old 360 game imo.
But 60 Fps is the only way to go, 30 fps is awful and rage 2 is on higher resolution and settings very hardware hungry. The PC version is a big jump over the consoles settings and resolutions. Rage is a game that looks much better when the resolution is over 1080p. But needs for ultra and 1440p a 1080 and a 2080ti struggles in 4k to hold 60 fps. No wonder why the ther is pop in on the consoles and only 1080p for higher resolution the game needs a lot more powerful hardware.
Screw 30fps. I always go for performance mode over resolution on my Pro. Feels so much better playing a FPS in 60fps. They did a great job on the visuals for sure
Nicolai By Given its from the devs that managed JC2 on X360/PS3 and Max Mad in 1080p30 on both X1S and PS4, with even better tools and engine in time, expected.

H-man Productions that’s just the game bro , it’s how it was developed. If the game was a linear and/or console exclusive it would look amazing while running 1080p 60 fps. the whole problem is that it’s open world game aiming for 60fps
If I wanted a weak 1080p picture I would not of bought a 4K console and TV, 1080p on a 4K TV looks terrible, this Resoloution might be fine for people with old TVs but for 4K it's completely useless.
X owner here. I'll agree 1080p is blurry on a 4k set. But X isn't that powerful. Idk why people think it is. 60fps is a needed thing on this game. X wouldn't be able to deliver that at anything higher than 1080p.
rina c dam you must have a crap budget TV then because my Sony xe930 does a great job uspcaling using the X1 Extreme processor. Sitting 10ft from my TV I can hardly notice the difference. Upgrade your TV and don't sit so close 👍
For console users, Samsung 2018 nu8000 and qleds, and 2019 ru8000 and qleds have “game motion plus” which is a low input lag motion interpolation which works fantastically to make 30 fps games look like 60. Only issue is a bit of ghosting around the characters head (I dont notice it personally). It works AMAZINGLY on spiderman and games like “the division”. Worked decently on “ac origins” but still pretty good. If the 30fps is very stable it works extremely well. It can also make 60 fps games 120 fps. They also have freesync for xbox one x and gaming pc’s. I have an nu8000 I love it, great tv.
@@DeadPhoenix86DP 4K 60 is a long way off still. Most PCs can't do 4K 60. The next gen consoles will probably have a GPU on a similar power level to a 1080. The only GPU that can really do 4K 60 on new games is a 2080ti, and you won't find a console with that power in it for under 800-1000

Your taxing situation is not very taxing. With the speed of KBM gameplay i have been able to create much more explosive things and foliage at once, and sowise managed to get my 1080 Ti below 60 fps for a fraction of a second, at 1440p. It was still amazing it held up so well.
Waiting for the PC analysis. One thing I have seen on mid range hardware like the GTX 1060 is the massive drop in fps with particle effects. Stuff like smoke after an explosion or blood splatter on screen after using abilities can drop the fps from 60 to low 40s. So eagerly waiting for PC analysis.
I run a 9600K w RTX 2080 and the performance could be better than it is. The 2080 To is barely holding a stable 60 FPS @ 4K. I'm running @ 1440p so naturally better FPS. It's not the best optimized game at this time though IMO.
Some ultra settings are to much for a 1060 the consoles use only mid to high and a 1060 6gb can deliver a better experience no pop ins. But for Ultra settings only bandwidth off the 1060 is a problem.
@@JadigertheReal The only problem is there isn't any Effects quality option. I had the same fps drops in DMC 5 with lots of particle effects, but I dropped the Effects to Medium, and voila 60 all the way without any big loss in visual fidelity.
IMO,ultra settings is often over rated and over used for very little to no gains in visuals. Yet, theres usually a negative impact on performance. Same goes for AF settings often. I've seen no visual difference in the majority of games I play whatever using AFx16 or x8. I find MSAAx2 vs x4 is normally sufficient as well in most games. PC gamers, including myself, often go overboard with settings that kill performance for very little visual gain or none at all.
Ugh, that pop-in is egregious. That should be the very first thing the developer takes care of, the immersion is ruined by it. What's the point of fidelity if it draws in right before your eyes.

Not really, ordinary graphics with unacceptable optimization for base consoles.

Clean your system

@@kapilbusawah7169 Lmao, thanks for the heads up
It's very annoying that the viewmodel/weapon FOV does not change by changing the base FOV, because it's extremely low, especially on an ultrawide monitor.
Some devs lock the weapon fov so we couldn't see clipping. Duke Nukem Forever is a good example, if you use the max fov you see cuts in the weapon where nothing is draw, a real mess. But there is always modders who make weapon fov mods for most games.
It's actually a common tactic in a lot of games

How do you rate it on PS5, bro?😊.

Short answer: YES
Would’ve loved 1440p 60fps on xbox one x
it's too weak. cpu is complete garbage.
No way the xbox one x could easy get 1440p 60fps on this game
No it couldn’t. It’s a 2010 laptop jaguar cpu. They would have to downgrade the graphical fidelity heavily if they wanted to shoot for 1400p 60fps. It’s an open world game. Remember that.
@@brixzusjaeger3385 Explain how RDR2 runs at 30fps and native 4K then? It's possible.
Mike Atkin simple Red dead redemption 2 runs at 30fps. Cpu handles the framerate if you didn’t know. Gpu handles resolution.
Rage on ps3 looked so dopeee
How times have changed with 1080p is considered a 'low resolution'

@Sursurk
There's actually quite a lot.
Specifically, last generation was defined by UE3, but UE4 isn't nearly that important this generation.
There's a dozen propietary engines written by a studio for themselves and used in one or two games this generation.
Maybe it's because UE4 needs too much CPU time.

Awesome. I really want Rage 1 added to the Xbox1X Enhanced list.
Same
avalanches TAA is always horrendous, hope they implement a better one in the future.
and it's heressy to like motion blur 😎😂
This seems like a great game to be enhanced on PS5 and the next Xbox. 4K at 60FPS with HDR implementation would be rad and help sell the upcoming DLC.
Not gonna lie, I rented this game and the visuals are so blurry to me. The pop in annoys me to hell, and I hate the low quality textures. I usually love playing at 1080 60fps, but this game just feels lazy.
rockapartie really wish I could take it off, looks so bad on my 4K tv
8:32 On the left of lily arm you can see raised slab the flooring/rubble has alot more detail. DF Why is this?
There's isn't any "extra detail"
@@dnbtrooperlol
You get proven wrong on this and the other video. So you jump to childish insults. 😂
@@nighttimestalker get a grip mate it was funny, you wanna troll me, then you'll get insults.
I see more detail on oneX it's not major but its there and I just think its bit weird that DF haven't mentioned it!
and if the Game is supposed to have pairity then why is it better on the Xbox one X?.
Eh, this is RAGE in name only. I loved the original RAGE because it seemed like id was pushing the 7th gen to the limit with their engine. RAGE 2 seems like a generic game made by a generic dev. It's a pass for me.
Your taxing situation is not very taxing.
With the speed of KBM gameplay i have been able to create much more explosive things and foliage at once, and sowise managed to get my 1080 Ti below 60 fps for a fraction of a second, at 1440p.
It was still amazing it held up so well.
It’s cool we have an Xbox one s game that doesn’t consistently dip below 30 FPS and run at like 860p
It would be cool if the base Xbox One wasn’t so underpowered
that to haha
Good job guys for making decent tech review and mean while avoid spoilers ;)
When u play 60fps.. u never go back to 30fps.. just sacrifice resolution..it worth it..
I dont agree, u can go back to 30 but theres a big difference!! 60 is loads better, fps over 4k any day of the week!
BRING FORTH THE PC ANALYSIS!
Great work as always. Are you planing to give us an update on the saints row 3 performance patch for switch?
Ugh, that pop-in is egregious. That should be the very first thing the developer takes care of, the immersion is ruined by it. What's the point of fidelity if it draws in right before your eyes. I also noticed character models clipping through geometry. I think the game looks good but the flaws shouldn't be ignored.
@DF: Please test "A Plague Tale: Innocence" for PC/PS4/XO next. That would be nice! Thank You!
