1:26 well actually the top 2 directly qualify but for a triangular you need 12.5% of people eligible to vote to go through, not 12.5% of voters. For instance, you got 20% of the votes but only 50% voted, it makes 10% and it's not enough for the 3rd-placer to be in the 2nd round run-off

Small correction: the threshold for the 2nd round is 12.5% of all *registered voters* and not of all participating voters. This is why only 2 or 3 can make it; voter turnout is usually very low since the parliamentary and presidential elections were synchronized in 2002, as a lot of people feel voting again only a month or two after the presidential election is pointless.

He is quite radical it is true, but there are more "moderate" parties like the Green party (EELV) and the socialist party (PS), though the PS is largely hated by most since the presidency of François Hollande the traitor.
But Mélenchon is far from an extremist either, though Macron's supporters call them extremists, enemies to the republic, islamo-leftists, and more stupid names clearly wrong or exagerrated. Just because they were afraid to lose. But in the end, they did lose.
And now Macron has no majority and wants to patner with the far right to pass laws, meaning that he has no problem allying with a party known for having in its ranks not only nationalists, but fascists and even neo-nazis, though they're not the majority.
Macron doesn't care, he's known to despise the slowness of democracy, and hates debates. He's what we call in France a bonapartist. In appearance faithful to the republic, but in fact wants to rule on his own, without people questioning him or his decisions.

These last 5 years, in the assembly, all the members of parliament adressed him regularly by saying they admired his passion for the republic, deep down they have a high opinion of him. He'll be remembered in history as a great figure of the left because he fought the truly, deeply right fights.
He has nothing extreme, he's an ecosocialist, he practicaly invented a new current of thought in France, created the main left-wing party of the years to come.
You're clearly biased by billionaire's medias.
Give me one extreme thing in his presidential program. There are none.
He wants a greener France, with a renewed strong industry, a new republic, more democratic that involves the pople much more.
He wants social justice ; to give everyone a chance to live decently, with a decent wages.
He wants to tax the very rich, who have multiplied their worth by 6 in 2 years !!!!!!!

    Ok so:
    - The threshold for getting to the second round isn't 12.5% of the vote but 12.5% of the registered voters in the circonscription.
    - So triangulgars are rare indeed because turnout is generally around 50%, so three candidates need about 25% of the vote for it to happen. But a two candidates second round isn't rare as you said because it's what happens by default. 572 out of the 577 elections had a 2 way second round. That's also because, if no candidate gets 50% of the vote AND only one gets 12.5% of the registered, the two first candidates of the first round go to the second round anyway.
    - "Assemblée Nationale" is pronounced "NaSSionale", not "NaSHionale". It was almost perfect though, got to appreciate the effort
    - Most estimates don't suggest a cohabitation would happen, but maybe a coalition. Cohabitations happened in France when one bloc had an absolute majority and wasn't the presidential bloc. This is probably not going to happen, but Macron might not get 289 seats so he would be forced to compromise (probably with LR, the traditionnal right-wing party), and with the left if that's still not enough.

There's also the ongoing question about the portion of registered voters who will choose to abstain or not .

Yeah! French parliamentary elections also holds in other countries as well, there are deputies which represents foreign territories. You might want to ask why and the answer is pretty simple. The point is not to represent foreigners but to represent _french_ people who _lives_ in those foreign countries. Those are the ones who actually vote for these deputies. Those deputies are not actually tied to countries like the UK but to whole parts of continent. The UK is part of an arbitrary "north europe" section.

So far not a single poll (taking into account the left as a coalition) indicates Macron would lose his plurality, ofcourse it is possible, but would be quite the upset. For now the real question according to the polls is whether he'll get a majority or not, since most indicate a number of seats right above or around the needed seats to get it.

    • @jg9585
      @jg9585 2 роки тому +2

That's a spot-on observation and it raises a question about the accuracy and/or trustworthiness of said polls, which have unanimously and consistently underestimated the left's results for at least ten years. So it seems to me rather unwise to consider what polls say to determine any sole real question.
Further into this, french polling institute have explained that their formulas exclude electors who are uncertain for whom to vote or whether they will vote. At the same time the left has been increasingly focusing their campaigns in the areas where participation has been low for a while, so I'd say there is a distinct possibility for an offset of the current power balance and so of polls.

*which have unanimously and consistently underestimated the left's results for at least ten years*
Have they though? In 2012 and 2017 presidential elections the polls were pretty much dead on and this year it was within the margin of error of 3% (when looking at the entire left).
In 2012 the polling in the legislative elections the seats and votes for the left were also pretty much dead on. In 2017 it was quite a bit off, but not just for the left, also for the right. It seems the polls overexaggerated the succes of the new LREM party back then.
I'd assume with the experiences of 2017, this time the legislative polling might be a bit improved to more match the 2012 accuracy, but that is something we'll have to see within a few days.
*french polling institute have explained that their formulas exclude electors who are uncertain for whom to vote or whether they will vote.*
Except I am looking at the results of several different polling agencies, often with different techniques. But I guess we'll find out how accurate they were this time.
*At the same time the left has been increasingly focusing their campaigns in the areas where participation has been low for a while, so I'd say there is a distinct possibility for an offset of the current power balance and so of polls.*
Polling should normally look at all of the population, so if more people intend to vote compared to the other times, then this should already be reflected in the polls. Again might depend on the different techniques used.
What the current polls show is that possibly the left coalition might get a plurality of the vote, but not even close to a pluraility of the seats, which could indicate the left being very strong in some departments, but overall speaking less strong than some other parties (like Ensemble). In the % of the votes, there constantly is a switch of who gets the plurality, but there never is a switch in the number of seats, there it doesn't seem to even be close.

@Jean Sanchez Yes, but the overall left lost votes in the election vs polling, if you coun't the overall left the polls were just within the 3% margin, not great, but not that wrong either.
Overall speaking polls are generally pretty close to the result, only in few cases is it off the mark, which can happen afterall it are just predictions and people can change their mind or make them up right at the end.
Personally I rarely ever heard of people getting influenced by polling, it can happen, but is generally rare.
Ironically this presidential election it might actually have impacted it, with more of the left voters switching to Melenchon because polling had him as the only shot for a left wing candidate to get into the second round.

That is completely false. First the far right : OK they don't call themselves far right, but they actually don't call themselves identitarians either. They entertain the fact that they're supposedly not right nor left.
Macron is indeed a liberal, there's no denying that, but french people agree that he's clearly right winged overall, and his party, though going from a few centre left members to right neo-liberal conservatives, is agreed by most to be centre-right.
For the left, yes they agree they are a social-ecological bloc, but they insist they are the left; it is a big pride for most left-winged. Even if the Parti socialiste for example has become more of social-liberal party, clearly centrist for the last 20 years or so. Though the new generation rejects François Hollande's government actions more and more and tends to go left again a bit more these days.

    Few additional facts :
    - There's a lot of untold Gerrymandering going on in France. Right-wing older rural circonscription (constituencies) are less populated than youger left-wing urban constituencies. This partly explains why the right (Macron's party and Les Republicans) are expected to win seats despite low polling.
    - During the 2nd round of the presidential election, a significant part of the left-wing voted Macron to prevent Le Pen from winning. Macron told in his victory speech that he owed them. Now he his spreading fake news about the left (see AFP fact check).
    - Macron's Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne had a rough start. When she was appointed PM she told that she would never lie to the French, a few days later she lied about not knowing one of his minister was accused of rape. She now has 2 Ministers currently accused of rape (Abad, Darmanin). Recently she told a crying disabled person to "go find a job" while arguing about lowering disabled people benefits.
    - Home affairs minister Darmanin and Paris chief of police are also facing difficulties. There was the Stade de France event, but the police also pepper sprayed people in a train for causing jam and recently shot a young women fleeing from police inspection because she didn't wear her seatbelt.

One thing I love about portuguese elections is that our districts are impossible to Gerrymander, since they arent redesigned. They were instituted in the 19th century and have been the same ever since. Each district elects a specific number of seats in parliament, proportional to its population, which can be changed every 10 years after the census is taken. This process cannot be falsified because it is a simple math.

One thing that is very weird about French politics right now is that the extreme anti-system nature of the politics is completely out of keeping with Macron's pretty solid stewardship of the country.
I'll concede that he's not a particularly likeable guy, he's arrogant and his vibe is very much that of an elitist/insider. But the actual background numbers are good for him. Unemployment is down, wages are up, and inflation is barely half of what it is elsewhere in the EU.

Unemployment numbers are known to be manipulated by politics in France. They count pretty much what they want. Ignoring people who are not explicitly registered in the "job center" institution and creating precarious status/work/formation which barely pay or dont pay at all so people are not considered unemployed anymore.
Wages didn't changed, not even always tied to the inflation, and are pretty low for our standards. The lost of buying power this last decade is juste terrifying. That's the metric to follow.

As a centrist I would normally vote for Macron's political coalition, and I hate his opponents' party positions ; but after his insistence on appeasing Putin I can no longer give him my vote. Since I wouldn't vote for the others either, I simply won't vote. In general France, Germany and Italy are proving to be led by cynical political leaders who put economic interest before moral values. Nevertheless, Macron's "majority" should win most of the seats in parliament, but I think it's only poetic justice that he should finally find himself having to deal with contrarians on a sufficiently important scale, that he is humbled.

    • @Juho221

Macron is trying to end the war by diplomacy. Likely won't work, but it's better to try. If we embarrass Putin, the war will only escalate and go longer, which isn't good for anyone. Putin is rather dangerous and everyone knows it. If we give him the feeling that he isn't cornered, that he still hasn't lost everything there is to lose, he decision to end the war is easier. Ending the war isn't economic values, although as a president he should put his people first. Isn't it moral values too to want end to this war? It's not only Ukrainian and Russian soldiers dying every day, it's also civilians dying and traumatizing every day, and millions leaving their homes and country. Many African and middle eastern countries are already starving, and without Ukrainian food they'll starve even more. The war affects the entire world, and it's in everyone's best interests to put an end to it. Unlike Biden and others, Macron actually does what's reasonable and right. Look at how the Versailles treaty from 1919 ultimately led to nazi Germany.

The Assembly won't self-dissolve, it's not gonna happen; and the Prime Minister needs to be supported by the Assembly so that's also illogical. Only option remaining is the President.
And if you're really concerned by the centralisation of powers, don't worry because most of the executive powers actually rest on the Prime Minister (as mentionned in the video: if there's a cohabitation, the Prime Minister does most things and the President remains leader of the army and leads the foreign policy).
