We've got some pushback for the title/thumbnail of this video, so a bit of clarification: while the "red bloc" did indeed win a majority, it seems that Frederiksen has decided that the coalition is too unstable to govern. This is essentially because the other "red bloc" parties don't like the Social Democrats enough to provide reliable parliamentary support for their policies. This is why, on Wednesday morning, Frederiksen claimed that "there is no longer a majority behind the government in its current form; therefore, tomorrow I will submit the government’s resignation to the queen" (source: apnews.com/article/europe-legislature-denmark-government-and-politics-6051713a8bda8850afbc823718872892). Frederiksen will stay on as caretaker PM while she tries to negotiate a new centrist coalition, which she will most likely lead as PM. In theory, Frederiksen could have stayed on without resigning, and continued to rely on other "red bloc" parties for Parliamentary support, but she apparently decided this was untenable. Nonetheless, we appreciate that the title/thumbnail was a bit clickbaity, but hopefully this comment makes it a bit clearer.

A bit of detail is lacking here. The problem was that the goverment was only made out of the social demokrats. Whilst so far this had been tolerated by the rest of the red parties, it was becoming untenable as critique mounted. The goverment that was resigned was the pure social demokratic one, and it could be replaced by another red block goverment. Except this time with a goverment including other red parties.
The Danish names for some of these parties are kind of weird, the centre right party "venstre" literally means "left", and the social liberals, which are the right most party in the red bloc are literally called "Radikale Venstre", meaning radical left. These names are purely historical.

There seems to be some confusion amongst my fellow Danes in the comment section regarding the title. The government did in fact "resign", as it chose not to continue with the parliamentary majority support. Usually an outright majority for the coalition would not trigger negotiations for a new government, but the prime minister dissolved the government in hopes of a more centrist government, as the second part of the video explains. So while a bit misleading, the title is correct.
well it's still kinda click bait. The video wasn't focusing or even elaborating on "Why the Winner Immediately Resigned", as the title suggested. It could have spent some more time going over this.
As a Danish citizen following politics quite closely Ijust have to say good job explaining the political situation in Denmark. I know it is not easy researching political affairs in a country you are not a native to, so well done 🙂

@@drakez4560 That is either ignorance or plain lying. Dyrevelfærdsloven was enacted on the 25th of February 2020 and was the first law in the world to acknowledge animals as sensing beings. Before that it was Dyreværnsloven the regulated the treatment of animals.

The only thing I can see missing is how all the mink was buried next to our drinking water. To then later have to be dug up again because it contaminated the water. Which all lead to the deleted sms problem that Mette also faced. Besides that great job TLDR
A government made quick decisions out of concern about the events, but it was wrong afterwards. If the decisions had not been made and things had gone badly then it would also have to be blamed. Sometimes there are only two bad decisions to choose from and time pressure on top of that.
To be fair, the problem has more been to do with the fact that Mette Frederiksen centralised power around herself while in office which made these problems possible in the first place. It is why a lot of the blue bloc's campaign centered around criticising her for being "magtfuldkommen" loosely translated as power hungry.
It was the right cal imho. It could have been catastrophic if it turned out that an export could spread the virus in a global market. Still the question mark over how it was implemented perhaps, but better safe than sorry. Also the outrage over killing all of them for being seen as cute is so myopic that it boggles the mind. Considering the context.

All-powerful also misses a lot of the nuance like how "Magtfuldkommen" tends to signify a certain way of acting as to try and acquire more power. @@aimeerivers She did indeed resign the government, which is why a "Dronningerunde" has been initiated, where in every party goes too the queen and points to whom they want to spearhead the forming of a new government, practically it's still Mette Frederiksen who is in charge of this process as she has the majority support, but it mean that a whole new round of negotiation is taking place in order to form a new government rather then the old continuing.
She did. Let me break it down. If she had lost the majority she would have gone to the Queen (pure pro forma) and formally resigned as PM so a new PM could be found among the majority. She won the majority though, which gave her two options. She could have stayed as PM and carried on without having to make a new government, but she chose otherwise. She chose to go to the Queen and basically say "Hey, I won the election, but I would like to investigate the possibilities for a coalition with my opposition. They basically made the ultimatum that every ministry, including the prime ministry, should be negotiated. This means that I have to resign for now, but depending on the outcome of our discussions I might after all become PM again". In the meantime, she is the "acting" PM and she won the election, so it is very difficult for many Danes to understand this, but she is not _currently_ the PM.
In short: Technically yes she resigned. In practice she is still interim pm and has the initiative to form the next coalition. So both the first answers are correct :D
Can you imagine how happy the opposition parties all around the world were when they saw that they are not in charge during Covid-19?! They just got a blank check to say: we would do the opposite, NO MATTER, what the sitting governments did. In a situation were literally nobody had "the right answer" - and now we get to say: TOLD YOU SO!!! Its great to have the advantage of time, right?
I don't care what any politician says...not one of them handled it optimally with the fewest possible deaths and least economic damage. There is no indication any opposing party would have done any better. Add the fact that the only measure that seemed to have any effect was to require the entire human population to isolate and it just was not possible to be in a powerful position for covid and remain popular with the people.
It's only great if they are no longer in opposition, otherwise that blank cheque was worthless. I suppose they can still snipe from the sidelines but only the government gets to decide things.
There is so much to this story well done to put it in a 10min video actually. The fur industry in Denmark has long been under scrutiny and in decline because of the obvious controvery behind it even before the pandemic started. The industry itself was obviously not doing well and there was even a dcoumentary made about the industry which showed farmers complaining about how hard it was to run the farms without making money. So as soon as they where compensated they wanted more and more in an industry that was already dying and in decline. This let to the conspiracy theory that the government just saw an opportunity to shut it down for good. After all this however the governmen has not banned this particular fur inudstry in Denmark like here in the UK. Another hugely important and underrated point is that the danish farming industry should just be happy that the virus did not jump to chickens or pigs because that is an even BIGGER industry in Denmark that harvesting fur from minks. Was it the right thing to do in hindsigth? Who knows but it is something that is still widely debated in Denmark whih has left alot of people dissapointed and angry with the government.
Personally I think it was probably an overreaction from fear - but given what was known at the time, not a wildly inappropriate overreaction. More of a "better safe than sorry" kind of deal.

My fellow Danes aren't getting it, it would seem. The Mette Frederiksen government did indeed resign, and she is now trying to establish a new parliamentary foundation for her next administration.

She can do it within "Red block" but it might be more advantages for Her to secure the support of "The Moderate" party. With them She will have room to negotiate any individual bill both to Her left and right politically as needed.

Danish parliamentary rules state you can only govern as long as you do NOT have a majority in opposition. She was the head of a minority government and not a coalition as such. With the rearranging of parliament she has chosen that her 1-party government isn't going to be enough for the time ahead and has chosen to resign. Due to that all party leaders have been called before the queen and given the question of who is to seek to form a new government and with the majority still being in the Red bloc Frederiksen has been chosen to do the honour of seeking a new government. She has vowed to seek a "broad" coalition reaching across the political divide, but if that fails she still has the fallback solutions of making a Red bloc coalition or even go back to a 1-party rule.

The social liberals forced an election because they did not want the social democrats to be the only party controlling the government (plainly meaning that they controlled all the ministries). Since that is how it was, there is now a majority against her current government, and she is therefore forced to resign the government. The social liberals would be willing to support a red bloc majority, but they would prefer a purple one, since they are politically closer to venstre than they are to enhedslisten (a socialist party). This is a preference shared with the social democrats.

It isn't. We have a bunch of other crisis that was not mentioned whatsoever. Like the highest electricity prices in all of Europe. Extreme inflation on everyone from gas to food. A public medical system that's on the borderline of collapse. Countless scandals with our tax authorities throughout the years. Critical infrastructure challenges that likely won't be addressed. A mental health crisis that has never been worse. Not to mention gang violence and immigrant crime being a perpetual issue, since for whatever reason our government refuses to deport rapists under the guise of "human rights". Our justice minister admitting that we cannot sentence people harsher because we simply don't have the prison capacity or security guard staff. Oh, and finally, none of the issues I just mentioned, besides inflation, got any air time during the debates or in the media. Instead, all that was talked about is climate climate climate. And how much more we need to be taxed to save the climate. Even though we already pay the highest taxes in the world, which doesn't help in the time of economic crisis. Did that help?

Precisely because our democracy is working so well, and the high social trust. Important decisions have to be made in the coming years, and our newly elected politicians seem like they are finally ready for serious reforms.. Time will tell. But in short, Denmark is still one of the best countries in the world. Only tied with Norway and Finland.

The problem with coalitions like those (well, one of them) is that when the government fails (and it will fail eventually because ruling is complicated and these are hard times), only extreme parties will remain untouched by the debacle and they will grow hugely. We have already seen it in Italy for example.

Not really. First off, unlike Italy, there’s less of a tendency to vote against any incumbent parties. Secondly, Danish cabinets are usually minority ones and tend to work in various patterns to their left and right when crafting legislation, depending on the topic and the other parties’ willingness to negotiate. And all Danish parties generally attempt to get in on the negotiations. Thirdly, much Danish legislation is bound up in “package deals”, where the parties that voted for it pledge (and do indeed) to support the legislation either until or even past the next general election (these deals tend to have a set expiration date). Fourthly, and as a consequence of the points above, most political parties in Denmark are involved in some (but not all) of the legislation, very few, if any, parties can play the “Well, we’re not part of this” card. Whether by coincidence or not, the downturn for the Danish People’s Party began after their victory in 2015, when they became so large that many found it odd that the party did not join the centre-right cabinet it supported, despite being the biggest party in the “blue bloc”.
@@DebatingWombat Thank you for your explanation! Well, I have to say that I don't think that supporting the legislation or not is the problem here anyway. The problem is how the people vote flows from one party to another party. If the parties that rule end up in problems, they'll support a party that wasn't included in the government in that moment. That's the intelligent thing to do anyway. And that party will grow. Maybe it's not so extreme or maybe it doesn't grow so much, or maybe it doesn't hold so much power, but that's what happens, not only in Italy. It's a consequence of the democratic system.
Ah, the good old "Venstre" party (which has it's mirror here in Norway) which literally translates to "left", yet still politically is a right wing party.
Fun fact, the reason the party is called "Venstre" here in Denmark when though counter-intuitively they are primarily a Center-Right party, is because there used to exist a party called "Højre"(Right) and "Venstre" is a party that formed as a splitter group from "Højre" so the name "Venstre" refers to party being on the left side of "Højre".
And the Danish name of the old centrist party (Danish Social Liberal Party) translates "The *Radical* Left" (Det Radikale Venstre). In the US, they might be seen as radical, but certainly not in Denmark. Still, a bit more left-wing than Venstre, and mostly counted as part of the red bloc, even if neither the party itself, nor the "real" left-wing parties like to see it as a bloc.

@@alphabetpeople2902 You're probably thinking of liberals in american politics which predominately refers to social liberalism, e.g freedom to health, education, love who you want etc. Liberalism in denmark refers to economic liberalism, e.g low taxes, free market, free trade etc. The left/right-wing divide when talking politics, besides being an extreme oversimplification, mostly refers to economic policy with more social policies on the left and more free market policies on the right.
I never get tired of listening to english-speakers try to pronounce Danish names... That aside, a detail that was left out that may have contributed to this result is that, while the whole Mink-affair initially saw a lot of people sympathize with the Mink-farmers, whose livelihoods had been destroyed by an overbearing and possibly over-reacting government, various stories have since emerged in the press that heavily diminished this sympathy, and thus the blame placed on the government responsible. Interviews with (former) mink-farmers made it clear that they, themselves, had been actively undermining the early efforts to stem the spread of the Cluster-5 variant, by simply not testing their minks like they were supposed to, or by failing to maintain the onerous restrictions meant to prevent the virus from spreading between populations. After all, if any of their minks tested positive, they had to cull the entire population, so... easy logic, right? No tests means no positives means no culling. It's the kind of approach a lot of US governors seems to have subscribed to as well. When you hear stories like that, it's hard to keep blaming the SocDems - maybe they acted too quickly, maybe they didn't really have the legal right to do it, maybe their data was flawed... but that's all complicated legal stuff. The classic 'tragedy of the commons' narrative of mink-farmers trying to preserve their own populations to the detriment of others, ultimately causing the destruction of the entire industry, is a lot more digestible.

@@InTaco7 if the conclusion was that it was illegal, and then they were acquitted, then theres no charge to disqualify them, and people are free to make a decision if the initial finding matters to them or not. the purpose of a commission is to determine the truth, discuss the repercussions and provide recommendations. clearly she took it seriously when she resigned. if your point is that they shouldnt be acquitted, then thats a matter for the judiciary, and it wouldnt be hard for interested groups to appeal the acquittal.

As retired Venstre politician Bertel Haarder explained on dr radio yesterday, an alliance across the middle was attempted in the 70's with with poor results. They got nothing done because of the big disagreements. Now, times are different but I still think the idea is bad, simply because the parties are too different to be effective together.

"Hardline" to the left as defined by billionaire funded media companies means strong redistribution of wealth, which is what is needed. Denmark has huge inequality of income and wealth. Basically this is true "Social Democracy", an actual turn away from neoliberalism. Not the fake SocDem ideology that is being spewed now. That is only radical because the people it affects are the super wealthy who wants compromise, and it is what is needed in Denmark and elsewhere. Situation is radical and calls for radical solutions, it is as simple as that. Research paper I cited goes into this, there is also some news articles you can read about how the Danish SocDem pushed austerity that are very accurate at Jacobin. Austerity and neoliberal economics lead to fascism.

They did what they could with the info available at the time. If it had been found that jumping from human to Mink and vice versa created a dangerous variant few would give a dam about the legality and would have complained bitterly if they hadn't done this because of some legal holdup.
Not true. The health authorities all unanimously agreed that the government could easily have waited a week or two to make the decision. And mind you, the "kill all mink" solution was not one the authorities at the time recommended, at all. They provided several models, one where you cull only the infected ones, one where you cull the infected ones + potentially infected mink within X radius of a farm, etc. It was Mette F, and her alone, who came up with her own model to kill them all, INCLUDING the most valuable breeds which they had developed over decades. Not even a couple hundred could be spared to save the breed. And no, you cannot feign ignorance either, because the mink komission revealed that the very documents which she claimed to be making the decision based on, EXPLICITLY said it would not be wise, or legal, to do what she did.
The main critique of Frederiksen is exactly that she did not use the information available at the time. There was a report noting that there was no legal ground to kill the minks, but she did not read the report before giving the order. In addition to that, after everyone finding out that it was illegal, Frederiksen would not accept the responsibility. There are a lot more details about how the government tried to cover up its mistakes by deleting messages, and so on. In general, most people agree that killing the minks was correct, but that the way it was handled legally was terrible.

As has been argued by she herself, the conclusion of the Minkcommission and several professors in public law; It is to be expected that advisors to the cabinet (the ministries involved) would inform the ministers about this, but they did not do this outright. The idea that she, or the government as a whole, bears the responsibility to literally ask:" Do we have legal basis for this action" is absurd. Public servants required by law to inform their superiors if they believe a certain action is illegal as well as reference the legal basis of their action when making a decision. Expecting politicians to be experts in every legal aspect of their field undermines democracy.
When Mette Frederiksen went to the queen it was with a letter of resignation. It is the only way there can be a so called dronningerunde, where all of the leaders of parties meet with the queen to point at a royal investigator, who try to find a way to make a new government. Formally Mette is still prime minister until there is assign a new government.
Technically she’s “caretaker PM”, which does not count as an elected prime minister. If they had put in a new caretaker, the caretaker wouldn’t count as an official PM for the records.

7:50 it is probably not going to take months. The longest time for a government to be formed in Denmark is 35 days. And Denmark has a negative majority law. This means that 90 mandates have to be against the ruling party for them needing a new one. Technically the ruling party will still be as usual but while that is happening they will negotiate with the other block. Mette has a really strong position to in the negotiations since she can always just go back to the old ones and show that she tried but the other parties wanted to many compromises.
When the current leader of Venstre, Jakob Elkeman was pressured to answer what he would have done in the same situation of the mink mutation risk - his answer was the same as what the Mette Frederiksen did. PS. The Danish mink farm industry was set to be fazed out by 2024. What is left of that whole thing, is just being used as political ammunition negotiating influence of the coming government. In the Kommune where there was 39 mink farms (most dense cluster in DK) the Social Democrats got the majority of votes.

The more-extreme, smaller parties have influence by being _included_ in one of those blocs. In contrast, they would be _excluded_ from power when a purple alliance is formed.
You can't include literally every party in a government, it's not how it works. Either you include the right centrists plus extremists, the left centrists plus their extremists, or only the centrists, and no extremists.

We have tried before with a purple government. Back in 1978, we had a SV government. It didn't go well, at all. No one trusted each other. Both parties had control ministers, of the opposite party's ministers. And the government collapsed after 14 months.
I had this open in the background whilst working and heard "Mink" over and over again. In my head, I was like "He doesn't mean the "mink", mink, can he?" - Oh, wow, okay.
Just FYI Mr. Newsman, her name is pronounced Met-te, with the 'te' sound at the end the same as in 'terminal' so like a 'ter' without the 'r'. Hope that makes sense.

To expand on your last point which is a bit wrong. Danish citizens can vote in national elections if they only are expected to stay abroad for 2 years or less - or if you're abroad due to government duties. You can vote on the danish embassy in the country you're staying in :)
If TLDR cared, they wouldn't butcher names/places so badly, so often. It's not as if all of them are difficult to pronounce correctly - Mette, for example, is dead simple, and completely dropping the second syllable indicates zero effort.
Its also funny, because even though i have lived abroad for more than two years by now, i can actually continue to vote as long as im a student. I just have to renew my spot on the voting list every two years. Dont know why they made that exception for students. But its great 👍

They didn’t make it clear, but the PM did formally resign. When a PM loses their parliamentary support, they are forced to formally resign. Frederiksen could get put back in the PM office (and it’s even likely) but currently she is only acting PM, not an elected prime minister.

The previous government was entirely based on red bloc majority, but she have promised to attempt the formation of a centrist government post election. That is what she is attempting now, but to even do that, she had to resign and dissolve the previous government, as that is the law.
As a Danish speaker (second language) I want to nudge your pronunciation of "Mette" and "Løkke" a little in the right direction... but that's my only criticism. She (her government) did resign yesterday and tldr did a very good job at explaining what that imply (=she will probably take the seat again). You should probably read up on how parliamentalism work in your own country.
Mette f did resign, but in a month time when negotiations are over She will get back in the seat as prime minister with or without the support of parties from the rigth. The last 5 elections had a minimum of 10 days of negotiation, this one is expectet to be a long one.

Technically speaking they were offered payment for each mink they culled themselves and had multiple chances to get a detrimental blow against their industry, but opted not to take those chances, despite the fact that they would be paid either way. Furthermore, the so called "billion dollar industry" is a pretty far cry from what it was a the time. The entire industry was suffering heavy losses, as nobody wanted to pay the price they wanted for their mink, so this entire scandal actually saved their asses.
I love that Radikale Venstre was translated into The Social Liberal Party and not the direct translation of The Radical Left. It's quite a bit more fitting for a party thats in the center.
As an American I'm kinda envious of how easily they were willing to not use their majority win as a means to push their agenda and decided that a more centrist policy would be better
It was a majority win with 1 seat based on 7 parties, two of wich were greenland and faroe Island (2 and 1 seat respectively) and our PM ran her campaign on a center government. But yes, i do see how this is much mucg different from us politics 😅
Because it is a very unstable majority based on parties that are mostly to the left of the Social Democrats, as well as some non-party members from the Faroe Islands and Greenland. It takes only ONE MP to get unhappy for entire thing to collapse. Likewise, if the PM moves towards the left to please the supporting parties, the Social Democrats will bleed voters to parties to their right, thus weakening the red block. All in all, this is a shit situation. But the blue block is even more fragmented.
Don't be. The Overton Window in Denmark has shifted hard right - in no small measure due to Frederiksen adopting racist policies for the Soc.Dems. - in the last couple of years, so a centrist government is basically a right wing government without the most extreme elements. You have to understand that Denmark is a social democratic state. IE, welfare, healthcare, education and social security are all pretty much guaranteed with only nuance differences between the serious parties (although Liberal Alliance had a very good election on a platform of "fuck you, got mine"). What's left is immigration and, to a bigger extent than you might think, rhetoric. The right wing block has been about harsh immigration laws for a few decades. During the second to last electoral period convicted criminal Inger Støjberg turned on the turbo racism with regards to immigration policy, and implicitly legitimized the very racist rhetoric of the far right fringe. Social democrats - as led by Mette Frederiksen - decided to not fight this, but instead adopt a similarly inhumane rhetoric with slightly less inhumane immigration policy. There's absolutely no evidence that these policies work or that this rhetoric is legitimate in any way. It's *not* a question of political differences. It's a question of appealing to racist voters who have been trained by the Danish People's Party to view all immigrants and non-whites as the enemy. At this point, the Danish People's Party is all but dissolved, despite having had great elections in the last few decades. This is because the entire right wing and the Social Democrats have almost completely adopted their immigration policy and rhetoric. To conclude: a centrist government will be the exact same as a fully right wing government, except Social Democrats will cling to power. They're essentially selling out the voters on the left because they're tired of being held accountable by actual leftist parties. The election resulted in a left wing majority, but Soc.Dems are treating it as a carte blanche to create their own little right-of-center coalition. It's eerily similar to right wing democrats and further right wing republicans giving you the illusion of choice while actively trying their hardest to keep popular policies and parties out of politics.
Sounds like the Danes have a bloody good political system and one the UK definitely needs to adopt, it's pretty unheard of over here for our politicians to be this fair when it comes to it, i was shocked when you explained how she thought it was unfair to lead with such a small majority and offered a coalition with the opposing parties, fat chance of that happening here with the conservatives. It’s more complicated than that. The reason the election happened when it did, almost 8 months before we were to have this election, is because the Social Liberal Party (aka: “Radikale”) threatened no-confidence as a result of the mink dilemma (which the video covered). But what isn’t being covered is how the Social Democrats, on matters of foreign policy and immigration/integration issues, is completely at odds with the rest of their allies, and ever since 1999-2000, this has been extremely hot-button and, as the winds currently blow, being strict on immigration is what gives the Left, and the Social Democrats more specifically, their power is to take on a xenophobic political agenda to cavort the wide sector of Danes who want a state distilling only the absolute top best. The rest of the Left though doesn’t want this, and refuses to agree with the Social Democrats on making this a policy agenda. So in a way, it’s killing two birds with one stone: punishing Radikale further for the sinking of government confidence, and to get the rest of the Left into a position where they can’t directly speak on policy as part of the majority. I get what you mean with the system being great, and I agree. Just the politicians in this system are typical politicians, with the same intrigue and arrogance to their righteousness as anywhere else: the UK, the US, France, Sweden, you name it. Danes are definitely not above the petty, spiteful bullshit that befalls the game of politics.
Encouraging collaboration reduces the divide between political opinion. 9/10 laws passed during Covid, were broad agreement laws, where the majority of parties voted in favor of them, even if they are in opposition and not part of the government. Unlike what many Danes would have you think, it was not just the Socialdemocrates on a solo-run; the only solo-run they did was to cull all the mink. The Danes generally don't care about the mink, and see it as a mean and abusive industry, therefore closing it. Has had little impact on the result.
Seems a lot of people misunderstand the "resignation" - the thing here is that if the current/previous government cannot continue as it was before, the prime minister has to resign and then the process of forming a new government starts. Because they want to form a government over the center that means the current government cannot continue without resigning first, even though they "won".

You should probably add where you observe the errors, rather than just stating they're there. From what I understood, the PM notified the Queen that there is no longer support for her one-party government to continue and that she would pursue options of forming a new government, based on the new election results.
That’s not how the Danish government works. In an alternate universe, Mette Frederiksen could have just informed the Queen that the government still enjoys the support of parliament after the election, and thus there would be no need to hold new negotiations in order to form a new government. But in this reality, Mette Frederiksen did in fact tell the Queen that her cabinet would like to resign so that new negotiations could be held. Sure, in a month’s time, Mette Frederiksen is most likely still gonna be PM, but until negotiations between the parties are over, she is technically just a placeholder “acting” PM.
To be fair, the mink genocide happens all the time every year. The only difference is that you export the fur. My take on this is that mink farms should be banned entirely, we don't need them, and the animals suffer horrendously in this awful practice.... what humans have created is basically "hell on earth" for farm animals (everything from the fur industry, to meat and dairy). You mentioned lars løkke a former Venstre leader, but also inger støjbjerg who was a big name in venstre before she was sentenced with 2 months of prison/house arrest after abusing her minister powers to illegally seperate immigrant couples and later kicked out of parlament, she, like Lars løkke, formed her own populist party, appealing to rural areas and stealing votes from venstre. Moderaterne also took many votes from venstre. So they went backwards almost 50%. That combined with the conservative party running for stateminister challenging venstre weakened the blue blocs chances. The conservative leader, søren pape, also made racist comments about greenland, refusing to apologize and when he finally did apologize it was a weak half assed apology, done in a TV debate, used rethorically to make Mette Frederiksen apologies for the mink scandal. His party looked to become huge in the polls, instead he lost 2 seats. The future is unsure, wether it will be a broad government or a left wing one. Most parties want multiple parties in government this time, compared to last election. (also yes, racism is normalized in our country's politics, so if you wonder why so many scandals are about it, then its par the course for Denmark.)
To be fair about the 4th point, from what I managed to search on them the english name is closer to what the radikale venstre actually are. No-one in Denmark uses it, but looks like it makes more sense. And this video is for an international audience. Social liberalism is an actual ideology, and helps the audience place them politically. Calling them a radical left party, would be way more misleading. They would think they are politically like Frie Grønne. 5. The infighting is only half true. The red bloc had almost as much infighting. Enhedslisten literally has called Radikale Venstre for a "blue spy in the red bloc". They fervently disagree on economic policy, since one party is socialist, the other capitalist. That's not some small difference. Finally, no, Pape running for prime minister did not hurt their chances, that is straight up untrue. Before the election was called, and a few weeks after the election, the blue bloc was perfectly capable of winning. The conservatives lost votes because of media scandals that had nothing to do with what they said or how they acted. You could make the argument the apology was not delivered well, but there was nothing he could have done to save the situation, the media already decided he was the devil, and the public bought it. Oh, and the whole racism thing? Leftist narrative, not reality. There's a reason Frie Grønne, who defined themselves as the anti racist party, only got 1%. If it was a real thing, they would have gotten a seat. But it's not. Just fearmongering.
Often in your videos you mention "elect a government" and you do you it frequently in cases of countries where the government is not elected, the parliaments and its member are.

Not really. Danish law is structured in such a way that the prime minister of the existing government have to formally resign, in order for a new government to be formed. But since her party have 50 seats out of a total of 179 and the entire red bloc have 90 seats, it's safe to say that even if the talks of a centrist government falls through, she will just redo the previous government.
Yes the prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, was critisied but the investgation also concluded that the goverment officials whos role it is to brief ministers on the legal aspects, did not brief the prime minister that it was not legal to kill of the minks. So the rapport concluded that she was not negligient in her duty.

They didn’t explain very clearly what happened. Basically, in a parliamentary system, if you don’t have enough seats to command a stable majority, you have to resign. One of the parliamentary partners from the last government backed out of supporting this PM, so the PM was forced to resign and allow the queen to appoint a “royal investigator” (likely Fredriksen again) to try to form a new government.
@@paradoxmo To expand on your comment: Mette has enough seats to continue (she have a total of 90 mandates in the entire red bloc), but since she ran her election on the desire to attempt a formation of a central government, she has to resign and dissolve the existing red bloc government, in order for a new, central one to be formed. It's just standard procedure.
The issue is not the closure of the mink industry in Denmark, but that the government broke the law, then lied to parliament about it and then acted like it was no big deal to break the law and possibly the constitution. Also the government is against a commission that should have found out what happend and who is a fault. This is not about the mink industry, but political integrity and respect for the law.
The way you tell it people might get the impression that there were not a majority for culling the mink in the Danish Parliament. As you well know, there was. It was not a matter of a Danish government going against the will of the elected representatives. It was procedures that were not held up because of mistakes of non-elected bureaucrats and the great time pressure of the situation

As a matter of fact, the government directly told the public about the incident in a press release on live television. Something that both Venstre and the Conservatives could learn a lot from, given the previous VKL government tried to cover up Inger Støjbergs disregard for the law and left it to the press to discover what had happened. Furthermore, several of our lawyers with specialty in "forvaltningsloven" have stated that there is no grounds for a Rigsret against Mette Frederiksen and that if one was to be performed, it would result in immediate acquittal, as there literally is no evidence whatso ever, that she is to blame. Not even the deleted SMS messages can be taken into account here, as she does not control the system that was responsible for deleting those messages. That system is controlled by the same bureaucrats who misled Mette in the first place. Hell, Nye Borgerliges own commission by the Attorney firm that they hired, is more flawed than the culling of the mink, given that the firm they chose, are specialized in real estate and the housing market, meaning that they really don't know what they're talking about, which is also why they faced that much criticism. But there is no evidence to support a legal action against Mette Frederiksen or any of her political colleagues, as they did not make any mistakes themselves and performed their jobs as they should. The people who made the mistakes, were the bureaucrats and they are the only ones who can be punished after any accounts of legal matter. Furthermore, an acquittal of Mette Frederiksen will also spell doom for the entire right wing, as everything they've been saying for the past 3 years, will be viewed as them misleading their voters, meaning they'll lose out heavily in the next elections. For that reason, they are absolutely not interested in her getting any legal action, as that would quickly constitute a further fall for themselves. Something I doubt any of them are interested in.

We've got some pushback for the title/thumbnail of this video, so a bit of clarification: while the "red bloc" did indeed win a majority, it seems that Frederiksen has decided that the coalition is too unstable to govern. This is essentially because the other "red bloc" parties don't like the Social Democrats enough to provide reliable parliamentary support for their policies. This is why, on Wednesday morning, Frederiksen claimed that "there is no longer a majority behind the government in its current form; therefore, tomorrow I will submit the government’s resignation to the queen" (source: apnews.com/article/europe-legislature-denmark-government-and-politics-6051713a8bda8850afbc823718872892).
Frederiksen will stay on as caretaker PM while she tries to negotiate a new centrist coalition, which she will most likely lead as PM. In theory, Frederiksen could have stayed on without resigning, and continued to rely on other "red bloc" parties for Parliamentary support, but she apparently decided this was untenable.
Nonetheless, we appreciate that the title/thumbnail was a bit clickbaity, but hopefully this comment makes it a bit clearer.

A bit of detail is lacking here. The problem was that the goverment was only made out of the social demokrats. Whilst so far this had been tolerated by the rest of the red parties, it was becoming untenable as critique mounted. The goverment that was resigned was the pure social demokratic one, and it could be replaced by another red block goverment. Except this time with a goverment including other red parties.
The Danish names for some of these parties are kind of weird, the centre right party "venstre" literally means "left", and the social liberals, which are the right most party in the red bloc are literally called "Radikale Venstre", meaning radical left.
These names are purely historical.

There seems to be some confusion amongst my fellow Danes in the comment section regarding the title. The government did in fact "resign", as it chose not to continue with the parliamentary majority support. Usually an outright majority for the coalition would not trigger negotiations for a new government, but the prime minister dissolved the government in hopes of a more centrist government, as the second part of the video explains. So while a bit misleading, the title is correct.

A government made quick decisions out of concern about the events, but it was wrong afterwards.
If the decisions had not been made and things had gone badly then it would also have to be blamed.
Sometimes there are only two bad decisions to choose from and time pressure on top of that.
To be fair, the problem has more been to do with the fact that Mette Frederiksen centralised power around herself while in office which made these problems possible in the first place. It is why a lot of the blue bloc's campaign centered around criticising her for being "magtfuldkommen" loosely translated as power hungry.

@@aimeerivers She did indeed resign the government, which is why a "Dronningerunde" has been initiated, where in every party goes too the queen and points to whom they want to spearhead the forming of a new government, practically it's still Mette Frederiksen who is in charge of this process as she has the majority support, but it mean that a whole new round of negotiation is taking place in order to form a new government rather then the old continuing.
She did. Let me break it down. If she had lost the majority she would have gone to the Queen (pure pro forma) and formally resigned as PM so a new PM could be found among the majority. She won the majority though, which gave her two options. She could have stayed as PM and carried on without having to make a new government, but she chose otherwise. She chose to go to the Queen and basically say "Hey, I won the election, but I would like to investigate the possibilities for a coalition with my opposition. They basically made the ultimatum that every ministry, including the prime ministry, should be negotiated. This means that I have to resign for now, but depending on the outcome of our discussions I might after all become PM again". In the meantime, she is the "acting" PM and she won the election, so it is very difficult for many Danes to understand this, but she is not _currently_ the PM.
In short: Technically yes she resigned. In practice she is still interim pm and has the initiative to form the next coalition. So both the first answers are correct :D
Can you imagine how happy the opposition parties all around the world were when they saw that they are not in charge during Covid-19?! They just got a blank check to say: we would do the opposite, NO MATTER, what the sitting governments did. I don't care what any politician says...not one of them handled it optimally with the fewest possible deaths and least economic damage. There is no indication any opposing party would have done any better.
Add the fact that the only measure that seemed to have any effect was to require the entire human population to isolate and it just was not possible to be in a powerful position for covid and remain popular with the people.
It's only great if they are no longer in opposition, otherwise that blank cheque was worthless. I suppose they can still snipe from the sidelines but only the government gets to decide things.

There is so much to this story well done to put it in a 10min video actually.
The fur industry in Denmark has long been under scrutiny and in decline because of the obvious controvery behind it even before the pandemic started.
The industry itself was obviously not doing well and there was even a dcoumentary made about the industry which showed farmers complaining about how hard it was to run the farms without making money.
So as soon as they where compensated they wanted more and more in an industry that was already dying and in decline. This let to the conspiracy theory that the government just saw an opportunity to shut it down for good. After all this however the governmen has not banned this particular fur inudstry in Denmark like here in the UK.

Was it the right thing to do in hindsigth? Who knows but it is something that is still widely debated in Denmark whih has left alot of people dissapointed and angry with the government.
Personally I think it was probably an overreaction from fear - but given what was known at the time, not a wildly inappropriate overreaction. More of a "better safe than sorry" kind of deal.

She can do it within "Red block" but it might be more advantages for Her to secure the support of "The Moderate" party. With them She will have room to negotiate any individual bill both to Her left and right politically as needed.

The government beforehand consisted only of her party with the other red bloc parties propping it up. Danish parliamentary rules state you can only govern as long as you do NOT have a majority in opposition. She was the head of a minority government and not a coalition as such.
With the rearranging of parliament she has chosen that her 1-party government isn't going to be enough for the time ahead and has chosen to resign. Due to that all party leaders have been called before the queen and given the question of who is to seek to form a new government and with the majority still being in the Red bloc Frederiksen has been chosen to do the honour of seeking a new government. She has vowed to seek a "broad" coalition reaching across the political divide, but if that fails she still has the fallback solutions of making a Red bloc coalition or even go back to a 1-party rule.

The social liberals forced an election because they did not want the social democrats to be the only party controlling the government (plainly meaning that they controlled all the ministries). Since that is how it was, there is now a majority against her current government, and she is therefore forced to resign the government. The social liberals would be willing to support a red bloc majority, but they would prefer a purple one, since they are politically closer to venstre than they are to enhedslisten (a socialist party). This is a preference shared with the social democrats.

If Denmark's biggest political scandal is this mink mess, then I can safely assume everything is going well in the country.
It isn't. We have a bunch of other crisis that was not mentioned whatsoever. Like the highest electricity prices in all of Europe. Extreme inflation on everyone from gas to food. A public medical system that's on the borderline of collapse. Countless scandals with our tax authorities throughout the years. Critical infrastructure challenges that likely won't be addressed. A mental health crisis that has never been worse. Not to mention gang violence and immigrant crime being a perpetual issue, since for whatever reason our government refuses to deport rapists under the guise of "human rights". Our justice minister admitting that we cannot sentence people harsher because we simply don't have the prison capacity or security guard staff. Oh, and finally, none of the issues I just mentioned, besides inflation, got any air time during the debates or in the media. Instead, all that was talked about is climate climate climate. And how much more we need to be taxed to save the climate. Even though we already pay the highest taxes in the world, which doesn't help in the time of economic crisis.

@@Daniel-jv1ku Despite all the negatives I mentioned, we are still doing very well. It's only in recent years serious problems have started bubbling up to the surface, but they are solvable. Precisely because our democracy is working so well, and the high social trust. Important decisions have to be made in the coming years, and our newly elected politicians seem like they are finally ready for serious reforms.. Time will tell.
But in short, Denmark is still one of the best countries in the world. Only tied with Norway and Finland.

The problem with coalitions like those (well, one of them) is that when the government fails (and it will fail eventually because ruling is complicated and these are hard times), only extreme parties will remain untouched by the debacle and they will grow hugely. We have already seen it in Italy for example.

Not really. First off, unlike Italy, there’s less of a tendency to vote against any incumbent parties.
Secondly, Danish cabinets are usually minority ones and tend to work in various patterns to their left and right when crafting legislation, depending on the topic and the other parties’ willingness to negotiate. And all Danish parties generally attempt to get in on the negotiations.
Thirdly, much Danish legislation is bound up in “package deals”, where the parties that voted for it pledge (and do indeed) to support the legislation either until or even past the next general election (these deals tend to have a set expiration date).
Fourthly, and as a consequence of the points above, most political parties in Denmark are involved in some (but not all) of the legislation, very few, if any, parties can play the “Well, we’re not part of this” card.
Whether by coincidence or not, the downturn for the Danish People’s Party began after their victory in 2015, when they became so large that many found it odd that the party did not join the centre-right cabinet it supported, despite being the biggest party in the “blue bloc”.

The problem is how the people vote flows from one party to another party. If the parties that rule end up in problems, they'll support a party that wasn't included in the government in that moment. That's the intelligent thing to do anyway.
And that party will grow. Maybe it's not so extreme or maybe it doesn't grow so much, or maybe it doesn't hold so much power, but that's what happens, not only in Italy. It's a consequence of the democratic system.
Ah, the good old "Venstre" party (which has it's mirror here in Norway) which literally translates to "left", yet still politically is a right wing party.
Fun fact, the reason the party is called "Venstre" here in Denmark when though counter-intuitively they are primarily a Center-Right party, is because there used to exist a party called "Højre"(Right) and "Venstre" is a party that formed as a splitter group from "Højre" so the name "Venstre" refers to party being on the left side of "Højre".
And the Danish name of the old centrist party (Danish Social Liberal Party) translates "The *Radical* Left" (Det Radikale Venstre). In the US, they might be seen as radical, but certainly not in Denmark. Still, a bit more left-wing than Venstre, and mostly counted as part of the red bloc, even if neither the party itself, nor the "real" left-wing parties like to see it as a bloc.

That aside, a detail that was left out that may have contributed to this result is that, while the whole Mink-affair initially saw a lot of people sympathize with the Mink-farmers, whose livelihoods had been destroyed by an overbearing and possibly over-reacting government, various stories have since emerged in the press that heavily diminished this sympathy, and thus the blame placed on the government responsible. Interviews with (former) mink-farmers made it clear that they, themselves, had been actively undermining the early efforts to stem the spread of the Cluster-5 variant, by simply not testing their minks like they were supposed to, or by failing to maintain the onerous restrictions meant to prevent the virus from spreading between populations. After all, if any of their minks tested positive, they had to cull the entire population, so... easy logic, right? No tests means no positives means no culling. It's the kind of approach a lot of US governors seems to have subscribed to as well.
When you hear stories like that, it's hard to keep blaming the SocDems - maybe they acted too quickly, maybe they didn't really have the legal right to do it, maybe their data was flawed... but that's all complicated legal stuff. The classic 'tragedy of the commons' narrative of mink-farmers trying to preserve their own populations to the detriment of others, ultimately causing the destruction of the entire industry, is a lot more digestible.

@@InTaco7 if the conclusion was that it was illegal, and then they were acquitted, then theres no charge to disqualify them, and people are free to make a decision if the initial finding matters to them or not. the purpose of a commission is to determine the truth, discuss the repercussions and provide recommendations. clearly she took it seriously when she resigned.
if your point is that they shouldnt be acquitted, then thats a matter for the judiciary, and it wouldnt be hard for interested groups to appeal the acquittal.

As retired Venstre politician Bertel Haarder explained on dr radio yesterday, an alliance across the middle was attempted in the 70's with with poor results. They got nothing done because of the big disagreements. Now, times are different but I still think the idea is bad, simply because the parties are too different to be effective together.
Campaigning aside, the actual policies called for by centre blue and centre red are significantly closer to eachother than in the previous case

"Hardline" to the left as defined by billionaire funded media companies means strong redistribution of wealth, which is what is needed. Denmark has huge inequality of income and wealth. Basically this is true "Social Democracy", an actual turn away from neoliberalism. Not the fake SocDem ideology that is being spewed now. That is only radical because the people it affects are the super wealthy who wants compromise, and it is what is needed in Denmark and elsewhere. Situation is radical and calls for radical solutions, it is as simple as that.
Research paper I cited goes into this, there is also some news articles you can read about how the Danish SocDem pushed austerity that are very accurate at Jacobin. Austerity and neoliberal economics lead to fascism.

They did what they could with the info available at the time. If it had been found that jumping from human to Mink and vice versa created a dangerous variant few would give a dam about the legality and would have complained bitterly if they hadn't done this because of some legal holdup.
Not true. The health authorities all unanimously agreed that the government could easily have waited a week or two to make the decision.
And mind you, the "kill all mink" solution was not one the authorities at the time recommended, at all. They provided several models, one where you cull only the infected ones, one where you cull the infected ones + potentially infected mink within X radius of a farm, etc. It was Mette F, and her alone, who came up with her own model to kill them all, INCLUDING the most valuable breeds which they had developed over decades. Not even a couple hundred could be spared to save the breed.
And no, you cannot feign ignorance either, because the mink komission revealed that the very documents which she claimed to be making the decision based on, EXPLICITLY said it would not be wise, or legal, to do what she did.
The main critique of Frederiksen is exactly that she did not use the information available at the time. There was a report noting that there was no legal ground to kill the minks, but she did not read the report before giving the order.
In addition to that, after everyone finding out that it was illegal, Frederiksen would not accept the responsibility.
There are a lot more details about how the government tried to cover up its mistakes by deleting messages, and so on.
In general, most people agree that killing the minks was correct, but that the way it was handled legally was terrible.

Public servants required by law to inform their superiors if they believe a certain action is illegal as well as reference the legal basis of their action when making a decision. When Mette Frederiksen went to the queen it was with a letter of resignation. It is the only way there can be a so called dronningerunde, where all of the leaders of parties meet with the queen to point at a royal investigator, who try to find a way to make a new government.
Formally Mette is still prime minister until there is assign a new government.
Technically she’s “caretaker PM”, which does not count as an elected prime minister. If they had put in a new caretaker, the caretaker wouldn’t count as an official PM for the records.

7:50 it is probably not going to take months. The longest time for a government to be formed in Denmark is 35 days. And Denmark has a negative majority law. This means that 90 mandates have to be against the ruling party for them needing a new one. Technically the ruling party will still be as usual but while that is happening they will negotiate with the other block. Mette has a really strong position to in the negotiations since she can always just go back to the old ones and show that she tried but the other parties wanted to many compromises.

When the current leader of Venstre, Jakob Elkeman was pressured to answer what he would have done in the same situation of the mink mutation risk - his answer was the same as what the Mette Frederiksen did.

What is left of that whole thing, is just being used as political ammunition negotiating influence of the coming government. In the Kommune where there was 39 mink farms (most dense cluster in DK) the Social Democrats got the majority of votes.

I think this should be "included". The more-extreme, smaller parties have influence by being _included_ in one of those blocs. In contrast, they would be _excluded_ from power when a purple alliance is formed.
You can't include literally every party in a government, it's not how it works. Either you include the right centrists plus extremists, the left centrists plus their extremists, or only the centrists, and no extremists.

We have tried before with a purple government. Back in 1978, we had a SV government. It didn't go well, at all. No one trusted each other. Both parties had control ministers, of the opposite party's ministers. And the government collapsed after 14 months.

To expand on your last point which is a bit wrong. Danish citizens can vote in national elections if they only are expected to stay abroad for 2 years or less - or if you're abroad due to government duties. You can vote on the danish embassy in the country you're staying in :)
If TLDR cared, they wouldn't butcher names/places so badly, so often. It's not as if all of them are difficult to pronounce correctly - Mette, for example, is dead simple, and completely dropping the second syllable indicates zero effort.

They didn’t make it clear, but the PM did formally resign. When a PM loses their parliamentary support, they are forced to formally resign. Frederiksen could get put back in the PM office (and it’s even likely) but currently she is only acting PM, not an elected prime minister.
This isn't clickbait in the slightest. She has to resign in order to keep the promises she made during the election campaign. The previous government was entirely based on red bloc majority, but she have promised to attempt the formation of a centrist government post election. That is what she is attempting now, but to even do that, she had to resign and dissolve the previous government, as that is the law.
As a Danish speaker (second language) I want to nudge your pronunciation of "Mette" and "Løkke" a little in the right direction... but that's my only criticism. Technically speaking they were offered payment for each mink they culled themselves and had multiple chances to get a detrimental blow against their industry, but opted not to take those chances, despite the fact that they would be paid either way. Furthermore, the so called "billion dollar industry" is a pretty far cry from what it was a the time. The entire industry was suffering heavy losses, as nobody wanted to pay the price they wanted for their mink, so this entire scandal actually saved their asses.
I love that Radikale Venstre was translated into The Social Liberal Party and not the direct translation of The Radical Left. It's quite a bit more fitting for a party thats in the center.

As an American I'm kinda envious of how easily they were willing to not use their majority win as a means to push their agenda and decided that a more centrist policy would be better

It was a majority win with 1 seat based on 7 parties, two of wich were greenland and faroe Island (2 and 1 seat respectively) and our PM ran her campaign on a center government.

Because it is a very unstable majority based on parties that are mostly to the left of the Social Democrats, as well as some non-party members from the Faroe Islands and Greenland. It takes only ONE MP to get unhappy for entire thing to collapse. Likewise, if the PM moves towards the left to please the supporting parties, the Social Democrats will bleed voters to parties to their right, thus weakening the red block.
All in all, this is a shit situation. But the blue block is even more fragmented.
Don't be. The Overton Window in Denmark has shifted hard right - in no small measure due to Frederiksen adopting racist policies for the Soc.Dems. - in the last couple of years, so a centrist government is basically a right wing government without the most extreme elements.
You have to understand that Denmark is a social democratic state. IE, welfare, healthcare, education and social security are all pretty much guaranteed with only nuance differences between the serious parties (although Liberal Alliance had a very good election on a platform of "fuck you, got mine"). What's left is immigration and, to a bigger extent than you might think, rhetoric. The right wing block has been about harsh immigration laws for a few decades. During the second to last electoral period convicted criminal Inger Støjberg turned on the turbo racism with regards to immigration policy, and implicitly legitimized the very racist rhetoric of the far right fringe. Social democrats - as led by Mette Frederiksen - decided to not fight this, but instead adopt a similarly inhumane rhetoric with slightly less inhumane immigration policy.
There's absolutely no evidence that these policies work or that this rhetoric is legitimate in any way. It's *not* a question of political differences. It's a question of appealing to racist voters who have been trained by the Danish People's Party to view all immigrants and non-whites as the enemy. At this point, the Danish People's Party is all but dissolved, despite having had great elections in the last few decades. This is because the entire right wing and the Social Democrats have almost completely adopted their immigration policy and rhetoric.
To conclude: a centrist government will be the exact same as a fully right wing government, except Social Democrats will cling to power. They're essentially selling out the voters on the left because they're tired of being held accountable by actual leftist parties. The election resulted in a left wing majority, but Soc.Dems are treating it as a carte blanche to create their own little right-of-center coalition. It's eerily similar to right wing democrats and further right wing republicans giving you the illusion of choice while actively trying their hardest to keep popular policies and parties out of politics.
There's something rotten around here.
Sounds like the Danes have a bloody good political system and one the UK definitely needs to adopt, it's pretty unheard of over here for our politicians to be this fair when it comes to it, i was shocked when you explained how she thought it was unfair to lead with such a small majority and offered a coalition with the opposing parties, fat chance of that happening here with the conservatives. But then again I assume thats what the bare minimum should be, do we really live in a true democracy under first past the post?
It’s more complicated than that.
The reason the election happened when it did, almost 8 months before we were to have this election, is because the Social Liberal Party (aka: “Radikale”) threatened no-confidence as a result of the mink dilemma (which the video covered). But what isn’t being covered is how the Social Democrats, on matters of foreign policy and immigration/integration issues, is completely at odds with the rest of their allies, and ever since 1999-2000, this has been extremely hot-button and, as the winds currently blow, being strict on immigration is what gives the Left, and the Social Democrats more specifically, their power is to take on a xenophobic political agenda to cavort the wide sector of Danes who want a state distilling only the absolute top best. The rest of the Left though doesn’t want this, and refuses to agree with the Social Democrats on making this a policy agenda. So in a way, it’s killing two birds with one stone: punishing Radikale further for the sinking of government confidence, and to get the rest of the Left into a position where they can’t directly speak on policy as part of the majority.
I get what you mean with the system being great, and I agree. Just the politicians in this system are typical politicians, with the same intrigue and arrogance to their righteousness as anywhere else: the UK, the US, France, Sweden, you name it. Danes are definitely not above the petty, spiteful bullshit that befalls the game of politics.
Encouraging collaboration reduces the divide between political opinion. 9/10 laws passed during Covid, were broad agreement laws, where the majority of parties voted in favor of them, even if they are in opposition and not part of the government. Unlike what many Danes would have you think, it was not just the Socialdemocrates on a solo-run; the only solo-run they did was to cull all the mink. The Danes generally don't care about the mink, and see it as a mean and abusive industry, therefore closing it. Has had little impact on the result.
Seems a lot of people misunderstand the "resignation" - the thing here is that if the current/previous government cannot continue as it was before, the prime minister has to resign and then the process of forming a new government starts. Because they want to form a government over the center that means the current government cannot continue without resigning first, even though they "won".

You should probably add where you observe the errors, rather than just stating they're there. From what I understood, the PM notified the Queen that there is no longer support for her one-party government to continue and that she would pursue options of forming a new government, based on the new election results.
That’s not how the Danish government works.
In an alternate universe, Mette Frederiksen could have just informed the Queen that the government still enjoys the support of parliament after the election, and thus there would be no need to hold new negotiations in order to form a new government.
But in this reality, Mette Frederiksen did in fact tell the Queen that her cabinet would like to resign so that new negotiations could be held.
Sure, in a month’s time, Mette Frederiksen is most likely still gonna be PM, but until negotiations between the parties are over, she is technically just a placeholder “acting” PM.

To be fair, the mink genocide happens all the time every year. The only difference is that you export the fur. My take on this is that mink farms should be banned entirely, we don't need them, and the animals suffer horrendously in this awful practice.... what humans have created is basically "hell on earth" for farm animals (everything from the fur industry, to meat and dairy). All practices would be considered illegal and punishable if it happened to any other animals than farm animals

5 the reason the blue bloc lost is because of infighting. You mentioned lars løkke a former Venstre leader, but also inger støjbjerg who was a big name in venstre before she was sentenced with 2 months of prison/house arrest after abusing her minister powers to illegally seperate immigrant couples and later kicked out of parlament, she, like Lars løkke, formed her own populist party, appealing to rural areas and stealing votes from venstre. Moderaterne also took many votes from venstre. So they went backwards almost 50%. That combined with the conservative party running for stateminister challenging venstre weakened the blue blocs chances. The conservative leader, søren pape, also made racist comments about greenland, refusing to apologize and when he finally did apologize it was a weak half assed apology, done in a TV debate, used rethorically to make Mette Frederiksen apologies for the mink scandal. His party looked to become huge in the polls, instead he lost 2 seats.
The future is unsure, wether it will be a broad government or a left wing one. Most parties want multiple parties in government this time, compared to last election.
(also yes, racism is normalized in our country's politics, so if you wonder why so many scandals are about it, then its par the course for Denmark.)
To be fair about the 4th point, from what I managed to search on them the english name is closer to what the radikale venstre actually are. No-one in Denmark uses it, but looks like it makes more sense. I agree with what you're saying though, just don't like the idea of calling a centrist party the "radical left" because thats what they want to be called or smthn.

2. It was subpar, a lot of mistakes were not mentioned, only the surface level was covered.
3. It is not beginning to reopen. This is misleading. Literally only 1 in 10 farmers are going to continue. And all their mink have been killed, they have to start from scratch. That world famous breed which produced the world class fur? Doesn't exist anymore. The millions of animals to profit off of? Don't exist anymore. So to say it's "reopening" as if nothing had happened, is dishonest framing. It's gonna be a ghost of its former self.
4. They are called social liberals internationally. And this video is for an international audience. Social liberalism is an actual ideology, and helps the audience place them politically. Calling them a radical left party, would be way more misleading. They would think they are politically like Frie Grønne.
5. The infighting is only half true. The red bloc had almost as much infighting. Enhedslisten literally has called Radikale Venstre for a "blue spy in the red bloc". They fervently disagree on economic policy, since one party is socialist, the other capitalist. That's not some small difference.
Finally, no, Pape running for prime minister did not hurt their chances, that is straight up untrue. Before the election was called, and a few weeks after the election, the blue bloc was perfectly capable of winning. The conservatives lost votes because of media scandals that had nothing to do with what they said or how they acted. You could make the argument the apology was not delivered well, but there was nothing he could have done to save the situation, the media already decided he was the devil, and the public bought it.
Oh, and the whole racism thing? Leftist narrative, not reality. There's a reason Frie Grønne, who defined themselves as the anti racist party, only got 1%. If it was a real thing, they would have gotten a seat. But it's not. Just fearmongering.
Often in your videos you mention "elect a government" and you do you it frequently in cases of countries where the government is not elected, the parliaments and its member are.

Not really. Danish law is structured in such a way that the prime minister of the existing government have to formally resign, in order for a new government to be formed. But since her party have 50 seats out of a total of 179 and the entire red bloc have 90 seats, it's safe to say that even if the talks of a centrist government falls through, she will just redo the previous government.

Yes the prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, was critisied but the investgation also concluded that the goverment officials whos role it is to brief ministers on the legal aspects, did not brief the prime minister that it was not legal to kill of the minks. So the rapport concluded that she was not negligient in her duty.

Why does the title and description say that the pm resigned? She hasn't, and it's never said in the video that she has. This is either horrendous click bait, or something has gone wrong.
They didn’t explain very clearly what happened. Basically, in a parliamentary system, if you don’t have enough seats to command a stable majority, you have to resign. One of the parliamentary partners from the last government backed out of supporting this PM, so the PM was forced to resign and allow the queen to appoint a “royal investigator” (likely Fredriksen again) to try to form a new government.
@@paradoxmo To expand on your comment: Mette has enough seats to continue (she have a total of 90 mandates in the entire red bloc), but since she ran her election on the desire to attempt a formation of a central government, she has to resign and dissolve the existing red bloc government, in order for a new, central one to be formed. It's just standard procedure.

The issue is not the closure of the mink industry in Denmark, but that the government broke the law, then lied to parliament about it and then acted like it was no big deal to break the law and possibly the constitution.
Also the government is against a commission that should have found out what happend and who is a fault.

It was not a matter of a Danish government going against the will of the elected representatives. It was procedures that were not held up because of mistakes of non-elected bureaucrats and the great time pressure of the situation

We also know, according to the report of the whole affair, that there also was some severe criticism of the government. Has there been done anything that can legally punish the government? As a matter of fact, the government directly told the public about the incident in a press release on live television. Something that both Venstre and the Conservatives could learn a lot from, given the previous VKL government tried to cover up Inger Støjbergs disregard for the law and left it to the press to discover what had happened. Furthermore, several of our lawyers with specialty in "forvaltningsloven" have stated that there is no grounds for a Rigsret against Mette Frederiksen and that if one was to be performed, it would result in immediate acquittal, as there literally is no evidence whatso ever, that she is to blame. Not even the deleted SMS messages can be taken into account here, as she does not control the system that was responsible for deleting those messages. That system is controlled by the same bureaucrats who misled Mette in the first place. Hell, Nye Borgerliges own commission by the Attorney firm that they hired, is more flawed than the culling of the mink, given that the firm they chose, are specialized in real estate and the housing market, meaning that they really don't know what they're talking about, which is also why they faced that much criticism.
But there is no evidence to support a legal action against Mette Frederiksen or any of her political colleagues, as they did not make any mistakes themselves and performed their jobs as they should. The people who made the mistakes, were the bureaucrats and they are the only ones who can be punished after any accounts of legal matter. Furthermore, an acquittal of Mette Frederiksen will also spell doom for the entire right wing, as everything they've been saying for the past 3 years, will be viewed as them misleading their voters, meaning they'll lose out heavily in the next elections. For that reason, they are absolutely not interested in her getting any legal action, as that would quickly constitute a further fall for themselves. Something I doubt any of them are interested in.
