Thats just how politics is in the philippines, you have to be in an already established political dynasty, or be an actor/athlete/beauty queen to be elected, very light on ideology
It is not only in the Philippines they have actors/athletes elected as government officials. Ukraine's president was a comedian. Pakistan's ousted PM was a cricket player. Just to name a few. 😉
It's democracy in general. Even the US is guilty of it since when you think about it, political figures become TV celebrities when 24/hr news channels cover their every move.
Example: Arjo Atayde. The only reason why I mentioned him here is because in my school (just guess where it is, it's in Quezon City) cancelled the on-class f2f from 1:00 onwards on May 6 because his rally will make the road filled with cars with his supporters (also without saying Arjo's girlfriend, Maine, is very popular in the Philippines) causing me to hate him
after Marcos got ousted many books have been written about him and his family some aren't actually true but they've allowed it to be published because of their hatred and jealousy towards Marcos Sr. They said he controlled the election, (he actually got re-elected that's why he ruled for 20yrs and people voted for him) they said he left the Philippines and went to Hawaii to run from his mistakes (him and his family actually got kidnapped and brought to Hawaii and later on, Aquino didn't allow then to go back to the Philippines) they said that Marcos Sr. ordered to kill Ninoy Aquino using a sniper rifle (Ninoy Aquino actually got assassinated using a pistol, shot in the head and a footage shows Ninoy talking to someone in the airplane as if they're preparing for his assassination and he knew about it all along it's like a setup to frame Marcos and blame him) they said Marcos and his family had stolen $200+ billion (There's no actually proof that they've stolen anything and the PCGG had been searching for the ill-gotten wealth over they years and no results whatsoever.

Philippines is similar to the US, where the world gets to wonder why that even after a pool of hundreds of millions of people, the same family names keep appearing as our choices for who to elect. And we always have a "law and order" bully who seems to be friends with a lot of criminals that half of the voters seem okay to vote for. I (we) still plan on visiting the Philippines in the next few years. And maybe try to live there for a few months. The election hasn't changed that.
@@frakez6155 well I have, my dad was one of the thousands who marched in EDSA asking to end the dictatorship. Sure, Marcos’ tenure started well and I can’t deny that - I might even applaud that - but all of his achievement has been rubbed away by the devastation that came with embezzling the wealth of the people. Feel free to read my dissertation that I did on Marcos legacy and impact on the 2016 Elections if you doubt my research. And before you say anything, no, we are not communists or affiliated to NPA etc, we’re just ordinary citizens who bothered to learn the truth from credible sources - not tiktok or youtube or even just news media from the Philippines.

As someone from the Philippines- it is very worrisome how people are affected by emotions, tribalism, and campaigns-of-emotion/propaganda when elections come about. Whoever has the most emotional populist message will probably win- even if that person doesn't really say anything of substance about fixing things. Basically making people vote for bad people because they are emotionally moved at the time. Really horrible populist tactic- but you can see how effective it is in the Philippines and how corrupt people who corrode democracy keep getting elected.
Liberal Party literally became like a cult and making the VP as a saint. Also, if not for the negative campaign, maybe the votes doesn't have a huge gap.
This is unfortunately common everywhere. It's a sort of "meta" tactic of the 2010s and sadly 2020s too. Populism is the bane of the civilized world and munches on the less educated. Only higher quality education could fix this issue in the long term, but that requires the government to actually invest in it, which will hardly happen as long as populists reign... I hope there's gonna come up a solution in time.
The Philippines since 1986 has struggled to clean the messes left by Marcos and, in fact, different leaders but same in corruption. After decades of false promises, no wonder why Filipinos think to clean the messes once and for all, they thought the son of the former dictator. Literally, like the case of the Rajapaksa dynasty in Sri Lanka.
That's the same rhetoric people used that got Rodrigo Duterte elected. Now in hindsight, I don't know if Marcos Jr. can even run the country as well as Duterte did. And that guy failed a LOT of promises.
It's worrisome. Some positives: 6 years isn't that long. It's longer than a US term, but shorter than a US maximum term. Also, while political dynasties are dangerous, in this case it might be a good thing. With no possibility of re-election, Marcos could normally do whatever he wants now without consequences, but with Duterte's daughter waiting for her turn, his behavior is going to reflect on her. The important thing is to stick to the term limits. The push to revise history could be an attempt to groom the population into welcoming a dictatorship. If Marcos or Duterte start trying to change the constitution to increase their power, that's where Philippinos really need to spring into action to shut that down immediately. That's where it gets out of control.
@Xinnie the Pooh The constitution didn't make us poor, how it was used did. We didn't go after those who were involved in Marital Law and instead welcomed them back into office. The constitution was never at fault, it was the failure of the people to capitalise on it
My take-away from the 2 or 3 national elections of my country the Philippines is to take a good look on how political parties use social media to campaign. Look at how different social media site algorithm tend to favor one candidate over another and how mis/disinformation spreads. It's frightening how it can affect democracy.
I am a Filipino. I voted for Bong Bong Marcos 58% of us did. You do not know what is happening in the Philippines. While I will not condemn BongBong for being the son of a dictator , I am scrutinising, if not am condemning BongBong's sin of avoiding debates, and interviews with the media who are interested in enquiring about his Criminal charges especially from the US, his tax evasion, the whereabouts of the Ill-gotten wealth from Marcos Sr, and his purpose and reasons for running for president. Example elaborating on his slogan of "Unity", as this is a helluva ambiguous term that anyone can pull off. Had he confronted his father's past sin and returned all of the ill-gotten wealth, then I believe he would've been decent enough to be a honest leader. This campaign of his reminds me of Joseph Goebbels saying "Repeat a lie often enough and people will believe it.". I know I was, at one point, questioning myself and everything I've researched and believed whether rule under Marcos Sr. Really was a 'Golden Era' and whether things were really aa bad as the older generations had told me.

Even though the concern regarding Bong Bong skipping debates is a valid one, one must remember that ALL candidates picked which debates they would attend and turned down those they don't feel like attending for one reason or another. Though I would really like to see Bong Bong's stance on the controversies put upon their family and talk about the specific details of these issues that the media leave out on their reports. For example, the media keep insisting about the Marcos Real Estate Tax during Bong Bong's campaign (possibly to further smear his name) while leaving out the fact that these real estate properties ( and in turn, the tax revenue) are already in the possession of the BIR ever since 1986 as per Cory's Executive Order No. 2. It is the BIR who failed to process and resolve this issue and the Marcoses have no say in it whatsoever and yet the media keeps pushing the narrative that it's their fault.

As a Filipino, the fact that we elected him is disappointing. While I don’t think he will completely follow his father’s policies, he will most likely be influenced by them. Most Filipinos get information from social media which is probably why he got many votes, and through his massive disinformation campaign, he managed to completely capture this young audience on social media who didn’t grow up under the time of Martial Law. There’s also the widespread issue of vote buying on the Marcos camp. I’d also like to point out that while Duterte’s faction of PDP-Laban(since there’s a separate faction lead by Pacquiao), endorsed the Uniteam tandem, Duterte himself did not endorse them. Whatever the outcome of his presidency will be, I hope it will be a good one.

Well I hope it doesn't come to that. But, I think that being a dictator today is way harder than in was in the 80's when they got the USA or the USSR backing them. I think that the Philipines cannot risk a lot given their current position with China, they need USA support and the USA won't be eager to support a dictatorship. An example could be with weapons and military equipment, if Bongo uses the military to supress political oponents or protestors, America nor Europe will sell him weapons. For example, during the start of Covid, Duterte and his team focused on lockdowns, but Robredo focused on getting the frontliners the necessary PPE and transportation. I think Duterte was offended like the VP was trying to one-up him and further isolated her politically. I think the Philippines is secure enough where the current sitting president can't be assassinated so the VP can take over.
being a son of a dictator doesn't mean he's also a dictator, but if he wants for people to trust him more he must keep his promise on improving the nation's economy, power supply and infrastructure.

It's funny because this channel was previously marked by UA-cam as being funded by the US government. That mark suddenly disappeared when Russia invaded Ukraine and this channel was against Russia's aggression. Democrats are against Russia's aggression (rightfully so, imho) but are also supporters of the Philippines' Liberal Party, which Robredo is closely in cahoots with. The current president of the US is a Democrat. Piece that together.
@@tanker00v25 That's actually a good point, I take it back. The main issue is that some of the Filipinos just basically rat out people outside the Philippines and basically assume that they are pink supporters (the color Leni Robredo is using for the elections). Mexico did this back in 2012 when they voted for Enrique Pena Nieto. The first time after almost 90 years of party rule, the PRI won the elections again. Even though he is lacking in explaining policies, he does seem to have some progressive views like legalization of medical mariuna, pro-abortion for rape victims, etc. (I watched all his interviews) Well time will tell. Good luck. I will continue to support my country. I will support bbm if I think he is doing something good and call him out when I think he is doing something wrong. Marcos was smart avoiding the liberal news media giants. He has a strong 50% base already WHY should he risk it? He let social media do the work while his critics conveniently called it misinformation and attacking the voters. Robredo need to flip Marcos voters in order to win. The Liberal party controls the Showbiz industry, Academe and news media in Philippines similar to the US. This was the mistake of TRUMP I think in 2020. The same constitution that was suppose to keep the Marcoses at bay resulted in the opposite on the 9th of May of 2022. When will my citizens realize the Constitution was and still flawed? It didn't fixed the perils caused by the Marcos dictatorship. The constitution worsened the political atmosphere of the country, limited its growth during the 90s and 2000s, which led to our manufacturing industry being stagnant, and being reliant on importation, which rose food cost. The constitution has set a SPECIFIC Economic Provision of the infamous 60/40 Ratio, where 60% of the employees of a company by a foreign investor shall have 60% Filipino nationals and 40% foreign nationals? This has deterred the PH being a lucrative and FDI-appealing nation, INITIALY, that could've bolstered our industries earlier during the 90s and 2000s, rather than in the 2010s. Some of our citizens work overseas because there are more white-collar jobs overseas, than within the our private sector. We rely on importation of manufactured products, than bolster our own manufacturing industries here because we significantly bar foreign investors because of our flawed constitution. Furthermore, more the 1987 Constitution didn't made the government seem proportionally representing the people, where most elected legislators comes from Luzon and Manila, that's why Rodrigo Duterte's election was significant, because he was THE FIRST MINDANAOAN PRESIDENT. In addition, this term limits forces some politician to continue their desired policies and government intervention through having their family members run for the same national/local post, which is confirmed by a study of DLSU and Ateneo School of Government. The Unitary System, hampers a equal pace of development, as it have to rely on the central government to make planning for far-end regions of the country, rather than having the provincial region itself, plan its spending, expenditure, projects and policies. You're also forgetting we're a MULTI-ETHNIC NATION, with 120 Ethnicities and Tribes roaming the country, and religion being diverse, where Luzon and Visayas are Catholics, and the Mindanao Region being mainly Muslim, this make Mindanaoan view the Central Government as a "Christian Theocracy." The solution is CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM, no more ludicrous economic provision, which would lead to more economic investment and strengthening of our manufacturing and service industry, for more jobs. No more term limits, a shift to Federalism, because we're a multi-ethnic nation, where regionalism is still strong. A reform of our House of Representative to be somewhat a PROPER Parliament, where we make half of the elected House of Representative voted based on District, and the other half based on proportional voting of political parties. In addition, the powers of a President is too strong, and our system let us not vote politicians in tandem, that's why we could have tons of Filibusters within the Senate and the House of Representatives. This system also allows a opportunity to immediately remove a Prime Minister with a vote of no confidence. A reform of the K-12 System, where we also have skill-based education and specializations, such as in South Korea and Japan. We could've reformed to this, but the Liberal Party and its members has continually downplayed or downright dismiss the idea of systematic change because our problems here are "because of people's behavior." They rejected the Ramos Administration's proposal reform, they rejected the Arroryo Administration's Cha-Cha, they ridiculed the Duterte Administration's Federalism Change, and now, the Liberal Party is now ridiculed and hated because of their sheer stupidity to not realize the need for reform earlier, and now they're reaping its consequence, by having another Marcos, being the 17th President of this Country. If there's two good things about this election, it's the realization of the need for constitutional reform and the decline and utter internal destruction of the Liberal Party for their reluctance on reform.

It was those who followed Marcos who put this country deeper into the shithole.
Singapore is different story, their leader actually care about the country and it's citizens.
If you mean under the leadership of Lee Kuan Yew then I agree. I'm a Filipino who visited Singapore one time and I admire the discipline of the people there. But then again, remember that geographically Singapore is the size of Metro Manila in the Philippines so the population is smaller and they tend to..i dont know..be more cooperative
Remember that Philippines did the same and it ended up going horribly. Just like the other 99% of dictatorships
No bit about why Ferdinand Marcos was liked and hated? Just went over about the bit of martial law and none of the accomplishments. Seemed a bit bias.
I pity some of the Filipinos who obnoxiously become snowflakes when people outside the Philippines talk about Bong Bong Marcos.
Like most of his supporters in this comment section
@@tanker00v25 I blame the lack of education that was given with some of these fools.
@@ayanomato4662 most of the issues in Philippines and all countries in general can be blamed on lack of good education
@@tanker00v25 That's actually a good point, I take it back. The main issue is that some of the Filipinos just basically rat out people outside the Philippines and basically assume that they are pink supporters (the color Leni Robredo is using for the elections).
They instantly make an argument to that person with the use of history about the Marcos family. Following his propaganda and with the naive thinking of people that the Philippines will "economically become great" again.

Good coverage. One note: granted, I just happened to hear this from my mother, not sure if it’s right or not, but I did hear that Duterte did in fact pull a 180 and sort of turned against Bong Bong, publicly denouncing him.
As some insight from being descended from Filipino diaspora myself, tribalism seems to play a big part in Filipino politics. Since Bong Bong is Ilocano most of my family ended up being fervent supporters of him and his father. I have a hefty amount of skepticism towards his administration but I do genuinely hope that he doesn’t end up a tyrant like his father.

I’m fascinated by the fact that foreign media, big and small are interested with our election.
Anyway, as long as the reportage is fair and sensible, I’ll watch it.
Thank you.
Because our country Philippines has the most weirdest election so far in history, A champion boxer, a human rights lawyer, a son of dictator,a former actor and former cop are running for president
There’s a clarification there: the President and the Vice President are voted separately, not tandem. Although he implicitly said that.
We are tired with Aquino and liberal administration. We suffer from crimes, corruptions and injustices during their administration. We are tired. Better we will vote for Marcos. We have nothing to lose. We were scammed on 1986.

I don't think he will become a dictator like some people say. As he isn't really a 'strongman'. He's very soft-spoken and calm. One word I would describe him as is he is 'diplomatic'. Duterte even called him a weak leader months ago.
Being a dictator's son does not make you a dictator.
From what i've seen his priorities are economy, agriculture and renewable energy. Even though he is lacking in explaining policies, he does seem to have some progressive views like legalization of medical mariuna, pro-abortion for rape victims, etc. (I watched all his interviews)
Well time will tell. Good luck.

I will support bbm if I think he is doing something good and call him out when I think he is doing something wrong. And i wish him good luck
I also think people saying that he will become a dictator and destroy the country could be an advantage for him because that will put low expectations for him, where if he makes the country grow or even keep it afloat, it will be a success

ikr? me being a resident here makes me concerned on how these clowns got the chance to be in position.
I saw a video citing that Marcos Jr. won based on his campaigning strategy, playing a defensive position and choosing to stay silent amidst people asking for him to answer his many controversies. If he won based on this strategy, I have to commend him. However, in no way did I supported him during elections having no detailed plataporma presented beforehand. As for now, I wish he could prove everyone wrong and does not live up to his father's legacy.
it wasn't a defensive strategy, it was a cowardly move.
You can say that he does not have a detailed plataporma if in the first place you are not interested and you are against him.
He has plataforma. You just need to do a little but of research unless you already have a preconceived judgement towards him.
He has platforms, I thought we're on the modern age where you can search everything. There's still dumb people like this one.
The news media was fully aware on how to control TRUMP during the 2020 debates. If you watch TRUMP 2016 debates vs 2020 debates the news media aggresively control the debate style and narrative.

Like father like son, there’s no way he will not corrupt.
Philippines is known as the tiger of asia in his father's reign as the president,, Neighboring countries knew how good leader he is for the country and old citizens who knew back then questioning ofw filipino why they ousted him,, and indeed after his term, everything goes down, and Philippines plumet to the ground, like father like son, thats what we actually hope, because his father did a lot of laws and facilities/infrastracture that benefit us till this day (that only few believed although its factual because he was painted as a Dictator by the media, but that term only emerged because he declared martial law from overwhelming anarchy in Philippines back in time., ( PH army cannot take them upfront because of lack of forces/government military to combat the rebels, you xan search the video coming from the pres Marcos Sr. own mouth about anarchy) oligarchs and all those higher people that benefits to be the richest here keep trying to smudge and continue ”Dictator” manipulation so the citizens are divided and cannot decide for the betterment of everyone, this is the time they take advantage of everyone by gaining benefits as our own citizen as for help/reliable resolution from other country) , meanwhile president after F. Marcos Sr. does nothing of help for the country except the current-soon to be former president, Rodrigo Duterte ,, it took this long, filipino are aware now, however, in social media/internet, theres a lot of manipulation and bad disinformation in hopes of never letting philippines stand untied for its own country.
One thing you can be sure is that you cannot be sure that this written discord in the internet is just another manipulation propaganda in hopes of keeping those who are in old power disregarding filipino citizens for those ruthless crocodiles own sake alone. 31M voted for the current president so why is the internet full of ”so called disagreeing citizens”? maybe because theyre not at all.
Right now those rebels/against even after the voting result looks more a like a wall of thorn that keep philippines bound and caged to ever bloom and rise again. Thats what distressing me the most,, another edsa revolution because that people think the best for eveyone while theyre actually only thinking about themselves and disregarding philippines as a whole.
I hope we dont shoot our own foot again.
Got all details correct except the taxation part... He had issues with the tax long before and had a ruling but the prosecution didn't execute the decision. That case was already final and executory which should have been enforced... Also he(Marcos Jr.) can't pay those taxes because of Cory Aquino's decision to freeze their properties.

You're also forgetting we're a MULTI-ETHNIC NATION, with 120 Ethnicities and Tribes roaming the country, and religion being diverse, where Luzon and Visayas are Catholics, and the Mindanao Region being mainly Muslim, this make Mindanaoan view the Central Government as a "Christian Theocracy."
The solution is CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM, no more ludicrous economic provision, which would lead to more economic investment and strengthening of our manufacturing and service industry, for more jobs.
