      grass is ineffective to electric and electric is ineffective to grass is the dynamic that I've experienced, however a strength/weakness type edit may have caused grass offense to hold an advantage by being neutral to electric.

    Bulbasaur is for losing battles? You can win the first 2 badges with him easily and Lt Surge with his electric types can't do you proper damage.
    Charmander? Useless during the first 2 gyms and nothing special in the 3rd.
    Squirtle? Great against Brock, nothing special against Misty and a disappoinment against Surge.
    Get your grass type hate away from here.

      Bulbasaur is actually over powered in gen 1, because of the glitch with Toxic and Leech Seed going off the same counter, and the fact that Razor Leaf would critical every time you used it. I chose it when I played Pokemon Blue, and I don't regret it at all. It's also my favorite design of the 3 original starters.

      @Boxed_Victory 8 років тому +15

      The first time they did this, the result was interesting because it really was a "shock" that regardless of your choice, that character would die. But after seeing this in virtually every game (not to say every game episode), the situation is simply boring and honestly removes much of the fun of making choices in their game and considering that "choice" is a large part of these games, this is a serious problem.
      They really need to rethink how they deal with choice on their games,because I can see them fading into obscurity if they continue like this.

    • @TouchySquirrel
      @TouchySquirrel 8 років тому +1

      Can I just say, in my opinion, they do a superb job of presenting a seemingly branching narrative, whilst still keeping it tightly wound enough to provide a coherent story. Think about it, if every 'choice' in a Telltale game really did change the story in a major way, they'd have hundreds of storylines to write! Imagine how long each episode would take. It'd be like The Wolf Among Us episode 1-2 gap all over again.

    Pretty much every choice in a Telltale game has zero effect on the future. Once you make a few plot point decisions then you're set on a certain path and the small things like who to save and what to say have little to no purpose because certain things are going to happen regardless of whatever you choice

      Is it just me or do all telltale games just kinda look... Bad. I don't mean that they aren't quality, I just mean that they look ugly. The characters just look atrocious. And the textures look weird. They characters look too smooth. And not in a hey this game is running very smoothly sort of way. I mean they don't have enough detail and just look poorly drawn. Like a but too flat, not enough wrinkles or lines of anything, it all just looks perfectly rounded.

    I disagree about Wolfenstein. Sure the changes from the decision are minor, but they do last the whole game and changes in pickups could theoretically make the difference between life an death for some players.

    • @Damacleez

      Exactly. And come one Fergus is way better, why kill him?

    • @iHuzza
      @iHuzza 8 років тому

      yeah, but the player potentially dying at a couple of points is hardly a game changer in itself as death isn't permanent for the player character and they effectively have infinite tries.

    • @OriginalPiMan
      @OriginalPiMan 8 років тому +15

      But there many games that have less important choices than that. Nearly every game with dialogue trees will have conversation options that will change absolutely nothing, for example.

    • @iHuzza
      @iHuzza 8 років тому +3

      OriginalPiMan well yeah, but this isn't an argument formed on the basis of comparison. The Wolfenstein thing hardly made any difference whatsoever, a different pickup is probably one of the most trivial changes I can imagine in a shooter game like Wolfenstein.

    • @Flamingbob25
      @Flamingbob25 8 років тому +30

      It's also not just the health pickups/armor pickups like the story of Fergus versus Wyatt are different. Not for the player, but if you actually talk to them they experienced the war differently: spoilers btw, Fergus has been fighting for the last 15 years and he's old and tired and thinks the resistance is running out of young people and that he can't lead it forever, and of course that you made the wrong choice, he even points out he wanted you to save Wyatt. Wyatt says that he was naive and inexperienced and his leadership got a lot of people killed, he's learned from it but at the cost of lives and that Fergus, his hero of sorts, would have done a better job. They both think you made the wrong choice, which is the place where it loops back to being the same but that's not because it doesn't matter, it's supposed to be tragic, and in my opinion it is and ultimately this decision probably has 100s of lines of unique dialogue.

      @rickypedia999 6 років тому +3

      I dunno, I'd say there's some variance to a couple of walking dead games too. Season 2 had that whole multiple ending thing, and new frontier had multiple characters that were ultimately determinant. That said, any significant difference is limited to that season only.

    • @sam-psonsmith9951

      there are a better once and worse once.
      all in all i agree. usually in the end it doesn't matter much what you choose most of the time.
      there are maybe a handful of choices who will determine if you get ending A or ending B and if it is really good, there is an ending C.
      any other choice is simply to make it look like you are choosing the path.

      The choices you make don't make much difference, but they influence how the story appears. Take The Wolf Among Us, a classic in the series: You can play the misunderstood fable that secretly has a bleeding heart, or the monster that's assigned to take down other monsters. It's all in how you play the game.

      He's the best option for the early part of the game as he has an advantage over the first two Gym leaders (arguably three as he'll take half damage from electric attacks), but after that Charizard and Blastoise are stronger and have better move pools. Pretty sure outside of Solar Beam the best gen 1 grass attack has a power of like 60.

      Extended cut? They all mean different consequences for the galaxy (reaper extermination, reaper control, or unity between organics and synthetic). The red ending even has 3 versions, based on your war-thing score, showing differend levels of devastation from unleashing a galaxy-wide EMP. Not to mention the 4th ending, refusing to use the crucible and let the next cycle deal with it.
      Anyway, the choices you make regarding the other characters are what really shapes the story, not the "choose what ending you wanna see first before you load that last save" choices at the end.

      ME3's initial lack of a prologue was intentional. It was symbolic. When asked to move IT topics to the fan fiction section of BSN, one of the writers refused the request, locked the thread, and said "There are elements of Mass Effect 3 that are meant to have non-literal interpretations." This doesn't mean IT is true, but it does mean that they intended you to *wonder if it was just indoctrination or not*.
      They've compared it to the Blade Runner thing. "Was a Deckard a replicant?" Personally I'm not a big fan of that comparison. The point of Blade Runner not telling you was because it didn't really matter if he was or not. It absolutely matters if the Reapers are or aren't really being stopped. It should be noted, BTW, that after 20 years they finally answered the question: Deckard is indeed a replicant, and if we're sticking with that analogy, Shepard is indeed being indoctrinated.
      Unfortunately, fans are stupid.
      Very stupid.
      Extremely stupid.
      Impossibly stupid.
      Instead of thoughtful debate, the community responded like petulant children and started the closest thing I've ever seen to an online riot, forcing them to add Extended Wrist Cut to give some more closure to the simple minded. And sadly, that's why we had Andromeda now. The fanbase acted like a bunch of retards, so now we're being treated like retards.

    • @KaiserTom
      @KaiserTom 8 років тому +8

      Venusaur, and any other grass type for that matter, is shit on because grass type attack moves are trash, or at least were before Gen 4. Your strongest attack was Solarbeam which required either a turn to charge or a turn to use sunny day (and replacing a move with sunny day). Your next strongest move was Razor Leaf and it's piddly power of 55. Meanwhile Charizard got Flamethrower and Flame Blast and Blastoise got Skull Bash and Hydro Pump, all of those above 90 power. All of their stats are nearly identical with minor differences but nothing significant. Grass types in general have the most weaknesses tied with Rock, and many are dual types giving them even more weaknesses, and their attacks overall are weak and have many types which resist them, their only benefit being there are a lot of pokemon that are dual weak to the few types grass is effective against. Meanwhile Fire types have quite a few resistances and few weaknesses, though those weaknesses are very commonly used, but it's all made up for their immunity to burn and their great attack moves and great effectivenesses. Water types are much more balanced defensively and offensively, having a few key resistances but also having some key weaknesses, and same with their attack, also having great moves. Both get power boosts to all their respective attacks from weather, unlike grass which only gets one specific move boosted. Grass types are trash, though apparently that may have changed recently with gen 6, but it's historically been trash.

      She said you pick Bulabasaur if you like losing Pokemon battles Yes it is for Red BLue but Competitive battling is part of Red and Blue as well and we all battled our friends. She never specifically said you would be losing to NPCs, you probably do lose some but for the most part the game is easy and designed so kids can beat it.
      You can beat the game easily with the worst Pokemon. I just completed a Yellow playthrough with Primape, Venamoth, Flareon, Pikachu, Poliwrath and Farfetch'd and it was pretty easy aside from the fact I challenged myself more by trying to catch all 151. Obviously some pokemon are missing but I used cheats to get them. I still caught all the ones I could and evolved them by leveling them up. So my party wasnt as high as they could have been if I didnt waste a lot of the XP there on all the pokemon I needed to evolve.

    • @galensmith9396
      @galensmith9396 8 років тому

      Stephen Brucculeri But she obviously was not talking about competitive. Considering she was talking about the choice between the three original starters in the original games.
      And that still doesn't change the fact that in the original games, Red and Blue, Bulbasaur was by far the best for early game and getting momentum to get through the game.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Bulbasaur statistically the strongest Kanto starter? He has the advantage in 4 of the gyms, and only struggles when you hit the elite 4 (let's face it, what starter didn't have a bad time with them), Koga and Blaine towards the end (unaffected by most of Koga's arsenal from the Gen 3 remakes onward). Charmander is the one you pick to lose Pokemon. He gets destroyed by Brock, Misty, Surge, Sabrina, Giovanni and 3/4ths of the Elite 4. He's only strong against the grass gym mid game. By then you can have a flying type (even spearow/fearow) go to town on poor Erica without having to deal with the early and late. game struggles.
    Based on typing and stats alone, Bulbasaur kicks ass in Kanto. Now if we we talking Johto...well...sorry Chikorita. Sorry about that. Just had to get that off my chest.

    Bioshock Spoilers: So here's the point of the brooch, and it's exactly what you touched on, and the significance is revealed there in that exact moment you commented on and said it might have been a mistake. It absolutely is not, and it's essential to the story, it IS the story, actually. The game is about a relationship, but the truth is that's all a mask for the real story about Parallel Universe Theory, and in that moment on the boat you are being told what's about to happen because you are with a completely different Elizabeth from a completely different timeline, only identifiable to you if you noticed that the brooch you gave her actually isn't the one you selected. It's not your Elizabeth, or not the Elizabeth that you have spent your game with. She's a product of different decisions creating alternate, divergent pathways. It's a teaser to the big reveal approaching the end of the story, that through every door in every lighthouse is a different outcome because one different decision was made somewhere in the line of decisions. It's actually monumentally bound to the entire theme of the game, that you made a choice, and that choice, while to you seems to be absolutely insignificant in every single way, created an alternate reality in which a parallel Booker picked a cage instead of a bird, with an infinite number of other different decisions on a divergent path in reality at every other turn of the game. And that's what brings you to the end, from your perspective something that was meaningless has actually created this path for you, this outcome you're living when there were an infinite number of other outcomes, and there you are sitting on a boat with a different Elizabeth teaching you this, all those different choices, different outcomes, and some of those divergent paths coming together to stop you from ever taking the baptism. But in the end, what she fails to see due to... well call it what you want, bias, blind drive to stop Comstock, missing the bigger picture, whatever you want, is that when she herself decides to kill you, another time line is created in which she decides not to, and nothing changes at all. That is the weight of that choice. It is nothing to you, but could be everything to the alternate reality you create alongside the choice. You picked the bird. But you also created a world in which you picked the cage. And that is true of every single thing you ever did in the entire game.

    • @tjfiso6407
      @tjfiso6407 8 років тому +9

      James Mitchener But the Elizabeth that is with you in the boat and at the lighthouse are the same one right? You're with them the whole time. So I think in this case that was just a mistake. The brooch does have a larger significance though, that you touch on. It does serve to show you that "your" Elizabeth isn't there, or at least it is heavily implied that she isn't, when you are drowned/'baptised' at the end.
      As for the parallel universes I think you're a little off on that as well. I don't think that with each action a new universe is created in which something else happened, but rather these seperate continuities simply exist parallel to each other. Do you see what I mean? "They're a million million worlds. All different and all similar. Constants and variables."

The thing that sold me on bulbasaur was how early I got poison powder and the fact that it's immune to poison.

    • @sleepysera
      @sleepysera 7 років тому +3

      ...so you know how to pokemon, gj!
      People have defeated the Elite 4 with nothing but a lvl 1 Rattata, let's not act as if Pokemon is this super hard game that takes the strongest Pokemon to beat it ;)
      Also, objectively speaking, Squirtle is the "strongest"(most useful) of the 3, so even if you picked Bulbasaur because it has type advantage during the first 2 gyms, it's ONLY the first 2, and it's usefulness pales in comparison to Squirtle.
      But in the end, we should follow what the games taught us: "Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best." And if that's Bulbasaur, good for you! :)

    • @fromach
      @fromach 7 років тому +1

      I first picked Bulbasaur because I liked the look of it. The whole poison typing was a nice bonus because of the immunity to poison. I would definitely trade him out for a typing that gave an immunity or at least resistance to paralysis.

    Illusion of choice is sometimes more valuable then meaningful choice. If you replay the games, sure you may be disappointed with the result, but more gamers will never know the choice was not important and we as gamers like it when games provide us with real choices (even if the results are cheated a little bit). In the old Pokemon games, you don't even know it's a hard choice and instead are stuck with whatever you pick unless someone tells you before you play to be careful.

      Mine has jumped from gen to gen.
      Red: Charmander, beat E4, new game, Squirtle, get walled at E4, new game, Bulbasaur, beat E4, caught Mewtwo. This is also the only generation where I reset my game.
      Gold: Totodile. Feraligatr was my first Lv100.
      Ruby: Mudkip for slight metagame; my brother picked Cyndaquil in Silver and I thought he'd grab Torchic in Sapphire. He instead got Treecko.
      Diamond: Piplup. Fire ass is stupid. Infernape is great, but Chimchar is still srsly wat
      Heart Gold: Totodile. By now my Gold cart had died and I wanted my Lv100 Feraligatr back. I eventually did get him back ... along with raising 8 other Lv100s.
      Black One: Tepig. Oshawott didn't wrap back around to awesome for me. Snivy didn't garner my love either, but at the same time it didn't garner my hate.
      Black 2: Tepig again.
      White 2: Snivy, wanted something different from Tepig for Challenge Mode.
      Y: Fennekin and Bulbasaur. Picks geared towards dealing with the Fairy type. Delphox is the only Kalos starter not weak to Fairy, and Venusaur is super effective. Didn't matter in the end, though, because I ended up overleveled and decided to sic a Lv78 Eviolite Doublade on Diantha's Mega Gardevoir.
      Omega Ruby: Treecko. Tried to metagame here, thinking the Blazikenite event in XY would mean fewer Torchics. Also, Mudkip meme is trash.
      Sun: Rowrowlet. *FIGHT THE POWER!*

      now mine:
      Yellow: I never played Red nor Blue simpely because I didn't want to let either charmander, squirtle or bulbasaur down
      Gold: Cyndaquil, didn't really love the options
      Ruby: Treecko
      Diamond: Turtwig, Torterra was OP and overleveled in my file, where all my other Pokémon were weak (except the starters a bit, made a trading deal with my little brother for us both to have all 3)
      BlackWhite: Oshawott/Snivy: Damn I loved Oshawott, partly bc of the anime, and Snivy was awesome too. Didn't realy love tepig, nor hate it. Decent Pokémon, but chanceless for me as the starter
      Y: First I chose Grass, but just because of Greninja I switched after a reset.
      Sun: Though choice, I mean well Water wouldn't stand a chance at all (although eventually I got all 3 again), but Litten won the battle over Rowlet

Thus they could write 20 ways to play each mission and not worry about how you did it later. If there's 20 possible endings to a story mission and the game needs to remember that later? Heh, people wonder why Bethesda games have bugs? It's because inside the code is a Gordian knot of quest logic that tracks details that the player doesn't even know exist.

  • @Buli0n
    @Buli0n 8 років тому +77

    Jane, please, stop... "Badass fire attacks"? Against whom? Charmander was useless in generation one and the worst starter, first GYMs were totally immune to fire (rock and water), and the last GYM was fire type, so even fully maxed out Charizard was no good. Besides, Bulbasaur has biggest defense stats from the starter trio, even bigger speed than Blastoise xD he smashed first GYMs, and in the endgame he destroys Elite Four as Venusaur. The only problem could be with fire gym in the end of the game, but who cares? You had plenty of time to catch and train many water Pokemon. And i know that Charmander was buffed in gen3, but still makes not so much of a difference and she was talkin' about our "childhood". Bulbasaur is the best Kanto starter.

    • @Buli0n

    • @Showsni
      @Showsni 8 років тому +9

      Bulbasaur is super easy mode for the first few gyms. Squirtle is easy mode for the game. Charmander is the choice of trainers who actually like a challenge and want the best Pokémon.

    • @JoeyWheelerKaiba
      @JoeyWheelerKaiba 8 років тому +3

      Kay it is more than the first two gyms with Bulbasaur though.
      First two gyms sure, Squirtle is still great. But then you get to the electric gym. Bulbasaur is still good. Squirtle is not. Then you got the grass gym... Bulbasaur isn't directly bad against it. It is also poison type secondary so it isn't so bad against the grass types. Then the poison gym... Poison can't poison poison. That bulba is part poison type. Still good against the gym. It isn't until the psychic gym that Bulasaur is not wise to use. And it is also not wise to use him against the fire gym. But then the final gym, what is it? GROUND. Super effective.
      So Bulbasaur with all it's resistances and very little weaknesses and the fact that it is good at the START of the game rather than any other time, says it is the best. But wait- there's more! Venasaur can oneshot most of the elite 4's pokemon. First one uses ice types but they are all with the exception of Jinx, also water types. The second there is a onix. Venasaur sn't bad against fighting types. The third who has ghost, he will struggle with. But Venasaur isn't weak to Ghosts or poison types that she has. Final. Dragon. Garados? Yeah bye. And toxic leach seed the frig out of Dragonite. Dragonite shoudl be the only real struggle for Venasaur.
      Bulbasaur is the best choice because literally every match up is easy street. Charmander is choosing hard mode.
      Also, if you think you are grabbing Squirtle for surf- you are making a terrible choice because before you need to surf you are GIVEN a lapras in the game and Lapras is better than Blastoise.
      Squirtle is not easy mode. It is medium. Both Squirtle and Charmander wont be good against the elite 4. Bulbasaur is good against 6/8 gyms and the elite 4.

    There's the choice in Dragon Age Inquisition, where you have the weighty choice between seeking the help of the Mages, or the Templars. The group you do not seek out disappear. And the literal only effect this has is whether it's Dorian or Cole who'll be comin' round the mountain when he comes - right in front of a huge army to pound you and your settlement into a fine, smushy paste. Same army, too.

    • @anja5050
      @anja5050 8 років тому +5

      That's not entirely true. Depending on which faction you choose you have two completely different main missions (Champion of the Just or In Hushed Whispers) and two very different side stories after reaching skyhold dealing with either Calpernia (Under Her Skin) or Samson (Before the Dawn). So while the battle at Haven is exactly the same, the actual missions and the potential aftermath don't exactly warrant it a place on the list. A better example would have been whether or not to help Anders in DA2 ;)

    • @Bethgael
      @Bethgael 8 років тому

      Whether you do Leliana's quest or Cullen's is hardly a consequential decision, just a bit of slightly different gameplay. Both still take you to the exact same ending.

    • @anja5050
      @anja5050 8 років тому +1

      That's no different from origin. Templars or mages, you still need to kill the arch demon. Compared to the entries on the list, however, the differences are still much bigger in that it actually has an effect in how the game plays out and what end you get, just as lqbalx1 points out.

It's just "which dodgy lowlife are you going to spend time working for", not "Who of my friends am I going to sacrifice to death or a fate worse than death". The Dragon Age decision that didn't matter that I spent most time agonizing about was the one from Origisn where in the Mage origin you have to decide to either betray your closest friend to a fate worse than death, or be a complete moron and go along with a plan which might get him away, but will certainly get you caught in the following investigation because you left a paper trail pointing right at you.

Less meaningful choices: Every romance option in every BioWare and Bethesda title. Your choice at the end of Mass Effect 3. Choosing not to continue at the beginning of any number of games that ultimately force you to continue anyway.

      Unstopablness in generation one bulbasaur was the only starter with any place in competitive battling being a niche pick to counter amnesia users in particular slowbro. Speed also improved crit rate gen one and amnesia raised both special attack and defense since they were one stat so slowbro would wreck your team if it got set up and you didn’t have venasaur. Fire type sucked until skarmory existed and didn’t become a good type until there were enough really threatening Pokémon that had 4 times weak to fire ( scizor was first then gen five introduced ferrothorn which could hold its own in Uber’s if all users of fire type moves were defeated excaliviar who was a beast in trick room heck even Durant could cause problems by giving you truant. Also genesect existing was a nice buff to fire type to make them good but not excellent. And blastoise was just outclassed by starmie slowbro and lapras.

    • @ultimaterecoil1136
      @ultimaterecoil1136 6 років тому +8

      Unstopablness so you pick bulbasaur if you want to battle competitively you pick squirtle if you are speed running and you just suck if you pick charmander because he was objectively the worst starter in generation one ( even if he was the coolest)

    You should of did the choice to chop lee's arm off or not for the walking dead choice

    • @EvilParagon2
      @EvilParagon2 8 років тому

      Eh, while it had the same result it does teach you through breaking down that fourth wall that chopping off the bitten part is useless.
      Because you can see both end results you know that fact, and potentially you could make a better decision in the future.
      Potentially, maybe in Season 3 that choice could have an effect on Clementine's choice. Maybe if you didn't cut, Clementine will cut her or someone else's limb off without your input. If you do cut, Clementine could have the option to either cut or not because she has witnessed it, thus meaning that decision in Season 1 did have an effect.
      So now I have just given you two reasons that that decision is actually valid. A, you are educated on how bites work and B, because of the way Walking Dead is made, most decisions can have a future impact.

      Ricky909 Perhaps then it just shows that it was useless in Lee's case because he went so long without having it cut off.

    Every choice in the War Within quest in Warframe. Each decision turns you either towards the Sun alignment, or the Moon alignment, or is Neutral. Each question gives you a moral dilemma about how you would act in the situation, with minimal information, and has no effect on gameplay whatsoever. It usually took me at least a minute for each of the dozen or so choices, which, in the end, didn't matter at all.
