I was thinking the same thing. I find it ironic that as much as I despise piracy, it is often the only means of preserving old games, music albums, and movies that are no longer commercially available. For example, we can still play the entire Commodore 64 library of games thanks to pirates.
Good question, and why'd they let Kojima leave when he was the genius behind their bestselling games Proof: MGS 1-4 sold millions of copies. MGR was a joint with PlatinumGames but still sold the same amount of copies, maybe a little less because some gamers don't know good quality. MGSV (when Kojima left Konami) barely broke the average of the previous games in the series Just goes to show that when you take Hideo Kojima's name off the box, you lose like 1/3 of your sales, and I'm lowballing

They do... for the most part. There are plenty of ROM sites out there that horde old games. We're currently up to the PS2 era and you can pretty much find any game ever released for any console before that. I'm unsure of the legality, but it's not exactly hard to find, and no one seems to be making a massive effort to stop it. Sure, if you pirate a modern game that's still being sold they'll come after you, but a game that's like 30 years old? I.... doubt it. I think the distinction is made that it's illegal to emulate the console to play these or to modify a console to play them, but downloading the rom itself is not illegal? I'm not sure exactly. It's always much more difficult to find the necessary files to emulate an old system than it is to find the games to play on it.
Huh. I have much more respect for whoever's in charge of Lego the Hobbit and Lego Lord of the Rings now. Just before the games were taken down, they were made free on...probably multiple platforms, but the one I know of is Humble Bundle, complete with the warning that the games codes would expire, and the games *must* be redeemed to an account within a week. They *could* have tried to convince people to buy them before they no longer could, but instead, they gave them away so anyone that wanted to enjoy the games but couldn't afford to would have that chance.

I take some consolation in that Kojima got to work with del Toro and Norman again in death stranding, without Konami's interference. I know it's not Silent Hills but it's still got that Kojima shine/genius/madness stamped all over it. Can't wait for its release.
There are a few theories floating about that Kojima saw the writing on the wall and knew the end was near by the time his team started working on P.T. - the references to "Dad" playing the same kind of games etc. are all thinly veiled insults against Konami for being a terrible and boring employer that suddenly decided to make some really messed up decisions.

The worst part is that even if you own the physical copies of the games, eventually the services that send out the updates will go down, meaning we'll be left with the versions of games that developers thought "eh, we'll just patch it on day one" about. As much as I like the fact that we can get games digitally or have post launch additions to games, I miss the days when you could buy a copy of a game and expect it to work in full. Now it's so hit and miss because so many developers assume everyone can readily download 20gb day one bug fixes.......

I mean I still have Atari stuff that works fine so that should say something😘 Also, believe it or not Disc Dr works pretty well. Lol If anything, you just need something to last long enough that the companies no longer care about emulators/ripped game copies. You can technically DL a lot of SNES games now, but they (so far) haven’t made much effort to shut that down. If just say if there are games you really favor, find a way to keep or safely store a copy yourself. Can’t trust the pettiness of these companies nowadays😓
GoG has been brilliant at bringing back most of the abandonware games of my youth as a PC gamer, but they still haven't been able to persuade Microsoft to allow them to re-release "Freelancer". It was a really great game with a fun solo-campaign as well as the multiplayer. There are other space-action games that do a lot of the same things, but I really enjoyed the Freelancers' art-style and the universe they made for it.

So true. Digital games take up space so people delete them out all the time thinking they can just re-download whenever. Once a game is released, it should be a done deal. That’s how it was with physical copies, and it should be exactly the same with digital copies.
There's a finite amount of physical copies ever produced for a game, movie, and music. After the licence expires, you can't produce more copies of it. Digital media is theoretically infinite with the method of distribution, so they must be pulled in order to stop extra copies from being "produced"

Totally in agreement. LotR is the best Lego game yet. Lego The Hobbit was spoiled only by their not including BoFA as part of the game, or even as DLC. They should have waited.

The initial reception to Silent Hills was so good I'm kind of surprise Konami didn't try to make it anyway even after they got rid of Kojima. It probably would have been crap but that didn't stop them from making Metal Gear Survive...
Alan Wake is another one. Something to do with music/audio licensing. I grabbed it and Alan Wake's American Nightmare for free on Steam just before they took it off the store... Still haven't played it, though.
I think that got reinstated as I got it free from epic games launcher. Driver San Francisco is another driving game hard to find. Which is sad since it's fantastic.
On the ps3 you can check your downloads list on the ps store and get the game back, so not all hope is lost. A year ago I did this and the game was still working.

Perhaps the issue with the GameBoy "not being portable" was about accessories? I started with the GameBoy Pocket, not the original, but even with that one odds were high that at the very least you'd probably own some sort of accessory with a light since the system itself didn't have a backlit screen until GameBoy Advance SP. I'm not sure of everything else that was out there but I'm pretty sure that lights are just scratching the surface of what was out there to improve the play experience. I think you could've also had a magnifier lens or stereo speakers or... maybe a tangle of link cables if you and your friends had any games with a multiplayer option. Actually, with or without an accessory shining a light down at the screen, being able to see the screen at all when outside the house could sometimes get to be tricky depending on the conditions outside. Devices with backlit screens can have their issues as well sometimes... but the backlighting cuts down on a lot of it, I think. Oh, wait... what about batteries? I think I've heard that the original GameBoy required 4 AAs and burned them up in something like 2-3 hours? Correct me if I'm wrong. I know that the Pocket used half as many batteries, possibly AAAs, and I think the battery life might have been at least twice that long. Correct me if I'm remembering that wrong. Both of those early models were before it became common for devices to feature rechargeable battery packs, at any rate. In or out of the house, use of the system was constrained by how many spare batteries you had available.
@@MuljoStpho I dunno about that, I seem to remember getting a good deal of play from my original Gameboy. It did take four AA batteries, but I don't remember it only lasting 2 to 3 hours. Plus, you could use a power adapter if you were close to an outlet so you weren't necessarily constrained by how many batteries you had lying around.
An original Game Boy will give you about 10-15 hours on 4 AA batteries. You're probably confusing it with the Sega Game Gear or Atari Lynx which took about 6 AA batteries but gobbled them up in about 3 hours (because of the backlit color screen) and that was also one of the main reasons the Game Boy easily won the handheld war.

Should’ve tossed in Battle for Middle Earth 2. EA no longer has distribution rights to it, and Warner Bros didn’t continue it. Physical copies for the PC run for about $160 online, as the online free downloads require additional steps to get it to work. Several groups of fans have even brought the multiplayer servers back online, whereas others have been expanding the franchise through custom campaigns encircling key events in the lore of Lord of the Rings. Fans are also recreating it in the Unreal Engine and so far Warner Bros has had no issue as the fan project is non-monetized and does not interfere with their ongoing titles.
If anyone’s looking for the AF pinball game there’s one in storage somewhere in Regina, SK, Canada. It was sitting in a 1920s store window for the last year after the last arcade in the city was damaged into bankruptcy due to fire next door (and 12 inches of ice on the floor).
Soul calibur 4 is also another example. It featured both Darth Vader and yoda aswell as starkiller from the force unleashed. After Disney bought Lucas arts they had to remove it from stores. The funny thing is that Vader and yoda were both console exclusives with the other being later purchase-able so this means that even if you find a physical copy there is no way to play the other character unless you have already bought him.
It's so weird that Disney's acquisition retroactively killed Soul Calibur. I feel like there's gotta be something in place for games that were allowed to be made even if they technically wouldn't be allowed to today. Because they already exist and were created legally.

Better compatibility with modern systems instead of having to use an old system), you can't. Because they're gone. Sure, if you have the games already you can re-download them but if you missed your chance, sorry. They're gone. And MUA3 might be coming out soon but from the looks of it, it doesn't take place in the same universe as the first two games and instead takes place in the MCU. The universe was what made the originals so compelling besides the characters. But I am excited for mua3. Hopefully Nintendo don't screw it up and make sure to renew all licenses periodically. Here's to hoping the iconic characters from the first two games return for a third time.

I can never figure out why they put a termination dates on games(this reaffirms my suspician that people working in the industry are either stupid or braindead) for licenses of a game already made or being contracted to be made, One with common sense would probably put a stipulation as well for HD/Remaster/Rerelease versions. The largest issue is with Music and such in games that involve Music, Either way it just gives a legal way to pirate it, if it is not legally available for purchase in the US Copyright does not apply, which was a supreme court decision because theft or pirating something has to cause monetary damages, which cannot occur if it is not on the market for purchase, Thank you Crunchy Roll and Dragonball Z lawsuit anime streaming with subtitles, Different countries I am not sure of their rulings, so in regards to legal advise I would say check respected laws concerning such.
These licensing agreements and such don't make sense to me. If it's a continual annual rate, or something like that, why would any dev keep paying that after a few years as sales decline? Why would they agree to that? What I expect it should be is an initial fee and then some percentage of sales. If that's the case, why would anyone decide zero profit is better than a trickling profit, and remove it from sale?
More a case of developers paying in advance I think. Residuals on games aren't a high income source let alone worth waiting for. I can see 50 grand being initial and 5 years up front, then the licence expirng and not worth renewal / 50k for 5 more years
To put it simply, it's a lot cheaper to lease the license for just the first few years of the game, get as much of the profits during the time when the game would get most of it's sells anyways. Especially if you don't have a lot of faith the project has long legs, and/or you think it could make a lot in the short term you don't want to share.
@Brandon Toad I would actually say it's the opposite: companies are clearly following through with copyright agreements, which leads to the games being pulled down. The real problem seems to be that the agreements themselves are shortsighted with expiring licenses and such. This problem is also seen with some broadcast shows' soundtracks, where the soundtrack was licensed for broadcast, but not dvd release (RIP Mission Hill soundtrack). Don't know if there's a better way to do licensing, but gamedevs have to focus on the game, and spmetimes they have to make compromises in order to get the game on shelves. *shrug*

As much as I like the fact that we can get games digitally or have post launch additions to games, I miss the days when you could buy a copy of a game and expect it to work in full. Now it's so hit and miss because so many developers assume everyone can readily download 20gb day one bug fixes.......

If anything, you just need something to last long enough that the companies no longer care about emulators/ripped game copies. You can technically DL a lot of SNES games now, but they (so far) haven’t made much effort to shut that down.

GoG has been brilliant at bringing back most of the abandonware games of my youth as a PC gamer, but they still haven't been able to persuade Microsoft to allow them to re-release "Freelancer". It was a really great game with a fun solo-campaign as well as the multiplayer. There are other space-action games that do a lot of the same things, but I really enjoyed the Freelancers' art-style and the universe they made for it.
This is why people hate lawyers, licensing and copyright. I get why we need them, but they can really ruin things for everyone.

There's a finite amount of physical copies ever produced for a game, movie, and music. After the licence expires, you can't produce more copies of it. Digital media is theoretically infinite with the method of distribution, so they must be pulled in order to stop extra copies from being "produced"

Perhaps the issue with the GameBoy "not being portable" was about accessories? I started with the GameBoy Pocket, not the original, but even with that one odds were high that at the very least you'd probably own some sort of accessory with a light since the system itself didn't have a backlit screen until GameBoy Advance SP. I'm not sure of everything else that was out there but I'm pretty sure that lights are just scratching the surface of what was out there to improve the play experience. I think you could've also had a magnifier lens or stereo speakers or... maybe a tangle of link cables if you and your friends had any games with a multiplayer option.
Actually, with or without an accessory shining a light down at the screen, being able to see the screen at all when outside the house could sometimes get to be tricky depending on the conditions outside. Devices with backlit screens can have their issues as well sometimes... but the backlighting cuts down on a lot of it, I think.
Oh, wait... what about batteries? I think I've heard that the original GameBoy required 4 AAs and burned them up in something like 2-3 hours? Correct me if I'm wrong. I know that the Pocket used half as many batteries, possibly AAAs, and I think the battery life might have been at least twice that long. Correct me if I'm remembering that wrong. Both of those early models were before it became common for devices to feature rechargeable battery packs, at any rate. In or out of the house, use of the system was constrained by how many spare batteries you had available.
@@MuljoStpho I dunno about that, I seem to remember getting a good deal of play from my original Gameboy. It did take four AA batteries, but I don't remember it only lasting 2 to 3 hours. Plus, you could use a power adapter if you were close to an outlet so you weren't necessarily constrained by how many batteries you had lying around.
An original Game Boy will give you about 10-15 hours on 4 AA batteries. You're probably confusing it with the Sega Game Gear or Atari Lynx which took about 6 AA batteries but gobbled them up in about 3 hours (because of the backlit color screen) and that was also one of the main reasons the Game Boy easily won the handheld war.

Should’ve tossed in Battle for Middle Earth 2. EA no longer has distribution rights to it, and Warner Bros didn’t continue it. Physical copies for the PC run for about $160 online, as the online free downloads require additional steps to get it to work. Several groups of fans have even brought the multiplayer servers back online, whereas others have been expanding the franchise through custom campaigns encircling key events in the lore of Lord of the Rings. Fans are also recreating it in the Unreal Engine and so far Warner Bros has had no issue as the fan project is non-monetized and does not interfere with their ongoing titles.

If anyone’s looking for the AF pinball game there’s one in storage somewhere in Regina, SK, Canada. It was sitting in a 1920s store window for the last year after the last arcade in the city was damaged into bankruptcy due to fire next door (and 12 inches of ice on the floor).
Soul calibur 4 is also another example. It featured both Darth Vader and yoda aswell as starkiller from the force unleashed. After Disney bought Lucas arts they had to remove it from stores. The funny thing is that Vader and yoda were both console exclusives with the other being later purchase-able so this means that even if you find a physical copy there is no way to play the other character unless you have already bought him.

It's so weird that Disney's acquisition retroactively killed Soul Calibur. I feel like there's gotta be something in place for games that were allowed to be made even if they technically wouldn't be allowed to today. Because they already exist and were created legally.

Better compatibility with modern systems instead of having to use an old system), you can't. Because they're gone. Sure, if you have the games already you can re-download them but if you missed your chance, sorry. They're gone. And MUA3 might be coming out soon but from the looks of it, it doesn't take place in the same universe as the first two games and instead takes place in the MCU. The universe was what made the originals so compelling besides the characters. But I am excited for mua3. Hopefully Nintendo don't screw it up and make sure to renew all licenses periodically. Here's to hoping the iconic characters from the first two games return for a third time.

I can never figure out why they put a termination dates on games(this reaffirms my suspician that people working in the industry are either stupid or braindead) for licenses of a game already made or being contracted to be made, One with common sense would probably put a stipulation as well for HD/Remaster/Rerelease versions. The largest issue is with Music and such in games that involve Music, Either way it just gives a legal way to pirate it, if it is not legally available for purchase in the US Copyright does not apply, which was a supreme court decision because theft or pirating something has to cause monetary damages, which cannot occur if it is not on the market for purchase, Thank you Crunchy Roll and Dragonball Z lawsuit anime streaming with subtitles, Different countries I am not sure of their rulings, so in regards to legal advise I would say check respected laws concerning such.

These licensing agreements and such don't make sense to me. If it's a continual annual rate, or something like that, why would any dev keep paying that after a few years as sales decline? Why would they agree to that?
What I expect it should be is an initial fee and then some percentage of sales. If that's the case, why would anyone decide zero profit is better than a trickling profit, and remove it from sale?
Because production costs is why.
More a case of developers paying in advance I think.
Residuals on games aren't a high income source let alone worth waiting for.
I can see 50 grand being initial and 5 years up front, then the licence expirng and not worth renewal / 50k for 5 more years
To put it simply, it's a lot cheaper to lease the license for just the first few years of the game, get as much of the profits during the time when the game would get most of it's sells anyways. Especially if you don't have a lot of faith the project has long legs, and/or you think it could make a lot in the short term you don't want to share.

@Brandon Toad I would actually say it's the opposite: companies are clearly following through with copyright agreements, which leads to the games being pulled down. The real problem seems to be that the agreements themselves are shortsighted with expiring licenses and such. This problem is also seen with some broadcast shows' soundtracks, where the soundtrack was licensed for broadcast, but not dvd release (RIP Mission Hill soundtrack).
Don't know if there's a better way to do licensing, but gamedevs have to focus on the game, and spmetimes they have to make compromises in order to get the game on shelves. *shrug*

@@TransDragonBear It only very recently has been removed to my knowledge (but as stated in the video, if you own it, you can still play it). Humble Bundle gave out free copies maybe two months ago tops, for exactly the reason the licence was running out.
