As the owner of a 2019 Stelvio, I worry about brand dilution. This downmarket Hornet will attract a decidedly different type of buyer and thats ok for the survival of Dodge, dealers and Stellantis. However, it almost feels as if they sacrificed Alfa Romeo in the process. Also, when it comes time to replace my Stelvio, i will not be going to the Dodge dealer. I will definitely go back to Alfa Romeo. Hopefully in a couple years, they will have a broader selection.

Under Marchione Alfa took most of the R&D money and wasted loads of money on the guilia (years late) that was an overpriced flop in the US while Dodge and Chrysler limped along with old models.
Also as was noted - this model is based on the dodge compass

@@gordtulk Do you work for the Biden administration because that is the strangest spin I've ever heard. If it wasn't for the late GREAT Sergio Marchionne you wouldn't have Alfa in the US. He created two jewels with the Giulia and the Stelvio and the Quadrifoglio versions are a BIG MIDDLE FINGER to the Germans. I own a custom ordered 2017 Giulia Quad and a 2020 Stelvio Ti Sport. Both based on the AMAZING Giorgio platform (which Marchionne spear headed) have set the bar in their class for handling, steering, acceleration and overall driving dynamics. He commissioned a Ferrari Skunkworks team to develop those models and his vision was realized by the end products. Regarding sales figures, Alfa was and in some cases still is, brand X in the US, however, the beauty and RELIABILITY and driving dynamics of their offerings is gaining them new fans by the thousands. Creating a loyal following in a foreign market will not happen over night. FORZA ALFA BABY !!!! THE KING IS BACK !!!!

I work at an Alfa dealership and I agree with everything you said. The Hornet has made the Tonale an absolute nonstarter. No one in their right mind would buy a Tonale when the Hornet is almost the exact same thing for cheaper. I don't expect the Tonale to sell well AT ALL.

Being a first edition and hearing about many, if minor, electrical weirdness is making me very hesitant to buy. I would like to see Alfo still selling cars in US in 5-10 years, but current sales make me wonder if stellantis is just going to wash their hands 9f Alfa in US

That front end change: Chrysler did the same thing with the long-departed Crossfire, built on a Mercedes SLK platform. The concept car had a dramatic front end, with vertically-oriented headlights, but Chrysler thought the production car should have a "more-corporate-looking" front. So they watered it down for production, and lost sales (well, there were other problems, as well).

For me, I don’t have brand loyalty, I go with what my needs are, what I can afford and what the product can provide me at my price level. Dodge Hornet ticks all the boxes for my needs and the options are within my price point. Mind you I am only aiming at the GT Plus not the hybrid variants.
I absolutely support the people who continue to buy and replace their vehicles with the same brand but as a car enthusiast the Alfa Romeo Tonale didn’t tick all of my boxes that the Hornet had.

I am curious about the reliability as well. Most people buying in this segment likely won't be aware of the Hornet's Italian engineering, and it'll probably sell better based on better brand recognition, which means I think a lot will sell overall. And from that I think we will, eventually, have pretty good data on the reliability. As usual the first MY may have some bugs to iron out, although with any luck, with the Tonale already on the roads in Europe, maybe they'll find some things to quickly iron out before the US Hornets and Tonale's land. Maybe. Who knows. The RDX is really good too.

@@velocemidwest The 1.3 Multi-air engine used is the same one they have been using for years now in the Fiat 500. The Multi-Air technology (see UA-cam videos on it) is over 8 years old now, fully debugged, and is far simpler than the cam switching tech used in Honda VTEC engines. It's an amazing technology to have a software defined electrohydraulic intake valve system, and it gives MultiAir engines about a 10% advantage over static cam engines. Italian products have a bad reputation (from a long time ago), but this engine is very clever, and used so broadly in Europe where 1.3L is considered a medium sized engine... In Brasil motors are 1 L, and a huge chunk of Japan's engines are only 0.6 L... Americans drive fast on freeways and we don't like puny motors.
Interestingly, there is a 1.3 L diesel engine that is also used by Stellantis in various territories, that was jointly developed with GM. That is also a clever little engine. What is made in huge quantities, usually gets all the bugs worked out. I would be apprehensive if Alfa offered motors that are not used elsewhere.

Nice review, but why didn't you explain more of how Dodge screwed Alfa Romeo by essentially just taking their creation without changing much. About how it's just rubbing poop in the face of a brand that has been producing special cars for over 111 years. This Alfa Romeo Tonale has tradition built into it. The GT Sprint line along the side of the vehicle that pays tribute to the Sprint GT and GTA. The front lighting that tributes SZ. The lower rear window point that tributes the 8C and the Brera. And the worst part for me. Taking the Ocra GT color that is clearly a GT and GTA color from Alfa Romeo's past. Sharing a platform is common. But the smart companies make changes in order to make each one indistinguishable. In short, it's bullshit. True individuals that know Alfa Romeo will hopefully thumb their noses at Dodge and pay tribute to what this car is supposed to do for the brand. It's been a great thing for them so far in European countries. If I'm being honest though, some American buyers won't care. They will just drive around their spaghettios. Instead of the Italian Tonale that Alfa Romeo spent millions developing. Could have been done ethically, but Dodge brass blew it.

Thanks for all that info & making a video!
The Hornet is not much cheaper than the Tonale and I believe we can ultimately get Tonales for even cheaper using the Federal EV tax credit loophole. As I’ve been pricing out cars lately it looks like the phev versions are almost identical in price. Dodge isn’t letting us price the phev like Alfa is yet but from what I found it’ll be at most $1-2k less. This is where the leasing loophole comes in.
The feds left a loophole for commercial EVs where all these new regulations don’t apply. When you lease an EV the leasing company will get the full $7,500 credit since it’s a commercial vehicle owned by them that they’re renting to you & it’s up to them to decide to pass it on to you or not. Toyota & other large dealers don’t & I’m doubtful Dodge will either. But Alfa has confirmed it’s eligible & will pass the savings on based on my discussions with my local dealer in CA. So you can get a cheaper lease & ultimately just lease to own a Tonale & with the $7,500 credit it will ultimately be cheaper than buying an at most $2k less Hornet.

Toyota/Lexus, Honda/Acura, Nissan/Infinity, VW/Audi, Dodge/Alfa-Romeo. I drove my Stelvio to Mississippi and nobody could even say Alfa-Romeo properly, and there was no dealership for hundreds of miles, so I see why being able to sell a version as a Dodge, which many Americans think is a domestic brand, makes sense. I saw the Tonale in Italy last fall, and my local CDJR dealership in Ripon has their first Hornet right now in that grungy ‘Blue Steele’ color…
I answered lots of questions they have about it…
The Dodge Boys have no idea what this car really is yet…
I love Alfa Romeo and adored my ‘18 Stelvio TI Sport lease…but I explained to the salesman that not every Dodge Bro will warm to the Hornet…
…and not every CDJR Tech will want to service them…speaking as a former FIAT guy…it’s not exactly an amazing union.
Popping the corn to watch this play out…

Alfa making 4 door anything is not the heritage nor niche it should mess with. A 3 door hatchback similar to Veloster maybe lifted a bit but minimal electronics on a plug-in hybrid. Give me gauges and digital panels, no connectivity no computer interactives just what runs the drivetrain efficiently. No touch screen nonsense, nothing that feels like a plastic soda bottle wrapped in vinyl like a disposable Tesla overpriced hackable car. I don't want anything that's hackable no wifi no Bluetooth no links and remote updates. Something minimalist, light with range and good handling on ideal and less than ideal roads. A foot of ground clearance. Stop pretending we want to sit on the ground. Batteries and electric motor can be put low and slightly mid-forward. A 3 cylinder ICE with front wheel drive. Or flip the idea and electric in front. Management system to drive the most ideal blend, and electric only when those inputs say it's best efficiency in efficiency modes. Plug-in hybrid is the future but the ICE needs to be modular so in the event it needs to become ethanol or hydrogen, we don't have to toss the whole car.

    There is no need to
    Horn Honk Lock your car.
    One click of your fob
    Light Flash ONLY
Confirms your vehicle is locked and armed.
People click the fob twice out of habit but it is not needed to assure your vehicle is locked and armed. It only creates noise that wakes people from sleep.

!! Please lower the background music volume, it interferes with comprehension of your voice.
The colors are not the same; you can't get the green in the Hornet. And the Hornet only has the 4 cylinder, 2 liter engine. No hybrid. You can only get the red leather seats in the Hornet GT Plus model which is 37k. The Tonale is 51k with the red leather and nice green, and probably a better stereo. Only the Hornet can be had in the Blue Steele matte color (the only matte color on either car).
Stellantis is being greedy and out of their minds if they think customers are this stupid to pay $14k more just to get a nice green exterior, and better gas mileage, but a much less powerful motor. Wealthy people, if they cared about gas mileage would get a Lexus Hybrid model.
They are doomed with this kind of customer manipulation. Why do these spreadsheet jockeys think that we want to spend $14k more to get a few MPG better, when the 10k more costs us in registration fees, sales tax, and ongoing insurance costs, more than we would ever save on fuel costs?? They should be a lot closer in price.

Alfa mad? LOL I bet. Haha. The Dodge will be the seller, the hit, and the other one will prob do just okay. The Dodge will be the one to get for those who want the thing not to be recalled a week after they get it for something that could have been fixed prior to sale. Yep, they the same but who cares, Dodge will shit on Alfa.

The Dodge Hornet is no real Dodge at all, it's nothing more than a useless cheap knockoff of the gorgeous Alfa Tonale. The Hornet would've taken the Charger and Challenger for inspiration instead of stealing the design of the Tonale for itself. What a real shame for Dodge. The Hornet could mean death for Dodge just like the Aztek and Torrent killed off Pontiac two decades back.

The Hornet proves that Premium doesn't excist anymore. The Alfa Tonale is just a blown-up 2003 Fiat Punto, that can easily be sold for less money than Alfa asks for it. Qualitywise and luxurywise 'budget' brands like Kia and Hyundai have surpassed Alfa in almost every way. Alfa made the wrong choice to want to be 'premium'. Their best sold cars in history were the Alfa Sud and Alfa 33, which were sporty and more posh Fiats, which normal consumers could afford. Noone wants to trade their BMW or Mercedes for a Medieval Alfa. Carfanatics love Alfas for their sportiness, but they don't buy cars.
