Growing alocasia dragonscale from rhizomes

  • I randomly bought half a kilogram of Alocasia dragonscale rhizomes at a very decent price. Not having any knowledge or experience, I decided to root it and film the process (and film it lol). I insert some care tips on this jewel alocasia throughout the video. How many of the rhizomes actually rooted? Watch and find out!

    the web-like parts of the fungus is called the mycellium ! i think each strand is called the hyphea, and the pretty red parts are actually the mushroom, or fruits of the fungus. i know it is not good for the plants, but it is so interesting to see ! lol :)

      A majority of plants actually benefit from mycorrhizal fungi in a mutually beneficial relationship! :) Hyphae is the "root" system of fungi- long fibrous strands that allow the fungus to obtain water and nutrients, while a mass of hyphae are referred to as a mycelium!

    If I had been there with you at the time of planting I would have suggested planting the tubers on their side. Interesting results by planting them both ways. Cool that multiple shoots sprouted from the horizontally placed tubers. Love to see how the plant form takes shape as the sprouts all mature.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 роки тому +2

      Yeahhh Its interesting to see multiples from the side. My suggestion after this experience is to plant them based on the shape of the tubers, sometimes slanted might be good too.

      The care is quite similar… they like extremely well draining potting mix but kept lightly and evenly moist throughout (think of it as humid media rather than wet). They are more prone to fungal infections in my experience, routine fungicide or neem oil spray is a good idea.

    Hi there, can you propagate a dragon from a propagated plant or only from the mother plant?
    thank you!

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 роки тому

      You can propagate them infinitely dowm generations of plants. The child will have exactly the same DNA as parents as they are clones. Unlike in seed propagation where you get genetic differences from parents.

    From the time of propagation to the time it grow new shoots and roots, how should I take care of them? Do I put them in a shaded and dark place or placed them where it can get indirect light? If the soil medium gets dry, when I spray water on top of the soil medium, can I also spray water on top of the tubers? I propagate my tubers by putting them in aroid soil mix in plastic cups ( without holes) and covered them with another transparent plastic cup. Then I placed the cup in a corner with low lighting. There hardly seem to be much growth after more than a week. Am I doing the right thing. I am from Malaysia. Thanks

      Hello I think no need to cover the pot as they are quite prone to rot and also our humidity should be high enough. Keep the soil slightly humid/damp but not wet nor compacted. I spray mine down lightly daily. Shade or brightness dont seem to affect it as I have grown them in different areas. Your biggest concern should be fungus or rot, which are always due to overwatering or too much organic material in the soil 😀

      Give it some time and never overwater it. Some take longer than others I think.

    i just bought mine yesterday! are they okay with morning sunlight from a west facing window?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 роки тому +1

      They should be able to handle both. Be careful of west windows it can get too sunny so it depends on the size of the window and how far they were away from that window
