I often find that tools can be a big challenge for many beginners as you have demonstrated. As a result I have made a paintology app which teaches you some of these core art techniques that are essential to getting better in digital drawing!

The duality of his soothing voice and the humorously aggressive words being spoken is both startling yet hilarious and for some reason I learn a hell of a lot more through this playfully aggressive reconstructive criticism than I do through many of the other tutors I’ve watched.
I sat in stunned silence with a half smile frozen on my face for about 10 minutes at 4:19. Alpha locking layer to prevent painting on empty pixels is HUGE. I'm learning and I've been keeping my outline separate in order to make coloring to the edge easier.🎉🎉🎉
Love your tutorial era ❤❤❤❤ As a traditional artist, digital art is so confusing for me, and i dont know why, so i love watching artists process and tutorial videos
Jesus christ, thank you for this video. I've watched dozens of tutorials that say a lot of the same details, and this isn't a knock on you for rehashing talking points, I'm actually extremely grateful for this BECAUSE you're saying the same things, but you're explaining WHY. No one ever says why to do things, they just say how to and that is the defining difference between me being able to actually comprehend and implement something and it going in one ear and out the other. INVALUABLE.
I love your art style. I’m trying to get into digital art as of about 2 weeks ago. This is the type of style that I’ve always seen myself getting into and learning.
A lot of the times I use my digital art app to “fix” my traditional art! For example, I take a picture of my painting, put it on the app, and now I’m free to add any details I was scared to add on the real page, I can use liquify, or play around with lighting. Sometimes I draw traditionally with a pencil or pen and I insert an image of that into my app, set that layer to multiply and now I can paint underneath!!! I’m a way better trad artist and I prefer it for sure, but incorporating digital into it is great for final touches for me!!!
the problem when I take a photo of a drawing is that the paper doesn't appear perfectly white on the photo (because of the lighting) and this is annoying. Do you increase the contrast of the photo so that it really looks black and white?
@@rostone.h667 I have this problem too :,)) I take the clearest photo I can, edit it in the photo app, transfer it to my iPad, put it in my art app and then edit it there. I’m sorry if it’s confusing!!!
One thing you left out is blending modes for layers, which I am pretty sure you used for the lights reflecting in the foreground. Surely one of the most powerful features of digital art!

As someone who is pretty new to digital art, I can honestly say, this one video is incredibly helpful and I'm am so glad I happen to stumble upon it! Thank You!
thank you sam... i'm just halfway through your video when i type this, but you already help so much. i thought no one would bother saying these beginner-friendly tips/tutorial because they seem so basic, and i don't have any background in painting education formal or no. once again thank you so much 👍👍
Hi Sam! I just found out your channel today, after years and years spent on YT. Went to art school, spent so much time trying to find artists here to follow, to resonate with. I can finally be happy to click on that subscribe button! You have such a fun, encouraging and essential way to teach and share your knowledge, it's inspiring! I fell out of art for a bit of time after being very, very good at it, so the discouragement i feel now that I'm back on it is quite big. But watching your videos made me breathe more calmly and remember that drawing is always a matter of practice, patience and fun. Thank you so so much, I'll follow your videos!
iam finally glad samdoesart started to make tutorials. it made my day better today. The rate my art videos are so boring and i always wanted to see more on how to draw and improve. Finally some new content. Amazing tutorial , cant wait to apply the things i learned today. thank you
Do you ever make a brush stroke over an area and sample the result? If you do it will be a different color than what you had in the brush already. A good way to transition to different values and colors. Also select an area, copy/paste it on a new layer and turn off the selection. Then you can use a filter to change exposure hue and saturation directly over the area it came from for comparison nondestructively. Good for highlights and cast shadows.
I've been using my phone for years for Ibis paint to draw tattoo flash, finally got an iPad for procreate. Never used the fancy tools when on my phone This video helps a lot
This is, by far, one of the best helpful digital art vids I have seen since I have started Procreate art 4 years ago. Thanks so much for the help and the vid!
Easy thing to know with RGB or CMYK: RGB if you share it online / digital platforms etc (72 dpi would be enough for online pics, but if you wanna print it, 300 dpi is a must). CMYK if you want to print your artwork and make paper products with your image. I am nowhere near as good as Sam is, but since I've recently learned more about digital works in graphic design classes at school, I always try to remember to use both RGB and CMYK, depending of course where the artwork will be posted etc. I saved this video already so that I can learn more and finally focus on creating digital art since I'm done with school (for now at least lol) :)
The DPI value only really matters if you set up your document size using distance measurements (inches, cm, mm etc) If you determine the width and height of the document based on pixels, the pixel count will always be the same. The DPI number will only be then used by the software to estimate the size you want to print out. It doesn’t determine the resolution of the image. For example, a 1000px x 1000px image will have the exact same info contained within it at 72dpi or 600dpi.
Really loved the video. I would like to see more videos like this one. For example, I have a hard time planning my sketch, and knowing how thorough I need to be with it. I am a traditional artist for years, but I am struggling to move to digital.
I’m so glad you use procreate too because I can follow your tutorials in procreate when I go to high school (they preinstall it). Also you are very good, keep it up!
