It’s so nice to see artists as practiced as Sam struggle in the same ways I do sometimes with faces. It helps you to realize that “failure” as Sam calls it, is normal and even good at times to help you grow. It makes my own failures feel less detrimental to my art journey
It’s sort of gives a refreshing feeling of sorts, I dunno if the it’s the vibe he has on his desk or a digital artist (most of the time) doing traditional art.
I spent a the last year practicing art and studying, in 2023 I didn't studied as much and drew more, but as time went on, I made less drawings than before I learned/practice it sucks
12:45 - When I started doing more anatomy practice with muscular men, I found that drawing action stars works very well for that! Actors such as Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren were my main references for muscular male bodies because they are two of my absolute favorite actors. I don't think I would have learned the anatomy as well as I did if I had not drawn guys I really liked.
I was just facing an art block and I started drawing today after 7 whole days and was struggling with faces this video inspired me to draw faces no matter however they are and also just because of you I started my first sketchbook. So thanks sam ❤ And I am seeing many comments about how you posted this video on the perfect timing and it is true, in my case too!😊

13:01 this is probably some of the best advice I’ve heard in a while and I don’t hear people say this enough. Practicing and studying drawing doesn’t have to be boring!!!! Find a subject you feel excited about! Go draw that kdrama guy!
This is amazing. Like you mention a lot, I also think artists on social media tend to just show their best pieces, and not all of their mistakes, or even their practice, but seeing your thinking and also some of your mistakes you make will probably be really reassuring first a lot of people :)
Thank you so much for this man. Ive been drawing for years and this past month I have not enjoyed creating art at all, if things don’t look good within the first few lines I get frustrated and quit. This video reminded me to be loose with my art, not getting bogged down on every detail. I’ve now created a piece which I actually like and had fun creating and only in 10 mins too. I went back drawing traditionally and I got so used to digital it was so off. But it was nice to see that I have made progress and my art looks good. This is motivating!
As someone who is fascinated by sketching I love this. It would be also nice if you make a video about sketching techniques/linework and some tips of how to generally filter out details from the reference but still to keep the look of the reference.
Something Sam does here (that's not really explained at all, especially to newer artists) is really important to understand if you're a beginner: Sketch like a painter. Don't fill, indixcate. Let me explain: He almost never fills in every single line for every single feature, detail, etc. Rather, he *indicates* these details and leaves gaps in the lines, or variance in the lines, or different levels of thick and thin in said lines. All of this for the face, eyes, nose, shape of the face, the hair, everything. You need gaps and variance, it's important. The shading works the same way, Different levels of dark in the shading, sometimes it's ultra light or ultra dark. It's how you get things to look natural and not "forced". Hope this helps!
Art is not all about perfection. It’s about creativity and fun to do! Let your mind be free doesn’t matter it’s ugly. Sometime making mistakes is the key of success like Pablo Picasso, his work is amazing!

It's really nice to hear and see someone explaining this kinda process so succinctly. I'm finishing up my program to get a Master's and teaching cert to be an art teacher, and I have taught students gesture drawings and the point of 'don't stress the details' like you did about your earlier skull drawings. Plus I do skull, head and hand drawings as my usual warm-up if I'm feeling in a funk. It's also great to emphasize the point you made about knowing the STRUCTURE underneath to help build a face on top-- I've had so many times earlier on, or if I'm feeling off, where the brow's wonky or the jawline is weird and offputting, but doing some recaps of skull structure usually puts that 'grounded' point back in my head.

This is great, amazing work! These are continuous line drawings btw, a contour drawing is when you usually only draw the outline (the contour) of an object but more importantly this done while not looking down at the page. You “scan / trace” the contour with your eyes and blindly move your hand at the same time, drawing the same part you’re looking at, without looking at your page. It’s really cool to do, you’ll surprise yourself!

However, while the actual sketching skills detailed in this video are a great place for me to start, probably the most helpful line in this entire video was "And if you're not already drawing right now, close UA-cam down. I just started to do sketches everyday cause I feel my art hasn't been improving, I think this video helped me to humble myself, my expectations are high and my sketches are not turning out how I'd imagine. I need to look at it in the long term, just keep at it everyday for at least 10 minutes and I'll see improvement. (hopefully lol)

Thank you so much for this, I have been struggling with how to faces and heads right for a while now and I was like what am I doing wrong?!?! I wasn't drawing a cranium. Thanks for that could you maybe if you haven't yet done something on general body shape such as feet, legs, or arms? No one really does much of that from what I've seen (which admittedly isn't much) but I have also been struggling with that. Funnily enough I am actually decent at hands I just need to figure out how to draw the rest of the body, so if you could point me in the right direction for that I would really appreciate it.
