Listen man, there isn't enough that could be said here, I have been watching this and taking notes for the last two days, don't let the one-hour length fool you, this one gives you so much of a detailed overview of the entire process, and it is sooooo helpful. thanks from the bottom of my heart. I am ready now to start learning the details... let's get this
There's never been a better time to make short films with your smartphone that's for sure. Can't wait to see everyone's work at the Mobile Motion film festival this year!
I agree and understand what you are saying - but, yesterday or two years ago or longer time ago would also have been "never a better time to make short films with your smart phone" :) I think that the point is to just go ahead and actually do it right away, because tomorrow or the future will be even better regarding technology...but it's in the mindset that makes the movie and the "use what you've got at hand mentality". (not trying to talk you down by the way :) ...just thinking out loud here).
I like that you take the time to speak in a manner that leaves open room for the creator to dream, your never single minded in the sense that if it isn’t your way it’s the wrong way. Many many thanks for your flavor of being human.
Man… I can’t thank you enough for making these videos. I know it takes a lot of time and effort. Thanks a lot! I’m a total beginner and I was just trying to improve my home made ordinary videos and you’re showing me the wonders of the seventh art! This is awesome!
not sure where to start with the thanks, you highlight very well the aspects which are most important with a serious tone. there isn't much whimsical words coming out of your mouth. very straight forward and concise. I appreciate your insight.
Sleeping on something you've written to see it with fresh eyes is something I've used forever when doing any writing, especially essays for school. I'm glad you mentioned it 😎
Your channel is scholarship for filmmakers. This is more or less a full compendium of filmmaking. You should be credited in my forthcoming movie. I have to be be grateful you have deposited a lot in me.
You sir is a absolutely fantastic teacher, have learned so much from you, being paralysed from chest down and wheelchair bound with a manual wheelchair I have some extra hurdles as well as extra benefits ie dolly smooth footage etc, I'm on a budget but using the Zhiyun smooth 4 and S20 FE, love both. If only could find a good clamp to attach gimble to the oversized tubing on my wheelchair frame, anyways just wanted to say big thankyou, if your ever looking for props or a ex Eastend gangster looking wheelchairbound model look me up, I have a ww1 ww2 collection you name a item I will have it. Either way I need to meet you if only to shake your hand so if ever in West Sussex look me up.🙏
Regarding apps... i use "kit scenarist" which has pretty much all modules (like Research, Characters etc etc) and more. Its a free app and only the "sync" Features cost money. I just drag and drop my files with all my devices, so i dont need the sync-feature. (Mac, iPad, iPhone).
Incredible video. Ty so much. I’ll be shooting a music video next week and although I have quite a bit of experience with performances and filming dancers etc. I learned SO MUCH from this video that will help me stay on task and organized. Ty Ty Ty.
Just in time as I am in the middle of shooting my short film using 2 phones , an LG V40 and LG V60. One phone with the Beastgrip DOF adapter attached to a shoulder rig for stabilization and the other to a Ulanzi DOF on a Moza Air Cross 2 all filmed at night.
I am still watching this in 2023 and in fact watched it half a dozen times. haha. This is good content. Just want to recommend another alternative to handbrake. "Shutter Encoder". I used it to transcode my pixel 7 videos to VP9 before I import it to premiere pro. This is a very good transcoder too. Free too. Realize I have watched you for so long but I haven't subscribe on this account. lol.
This is the best tutorial covering absolutely every part of filmmaking in less that an hour. You’re great sir. I’m going to make a short film using the information I have learnt here and will submit it to you. Thanks for the knowledge.
I was looking for a beginner's how-to-be-a-filmmaker kind of thing, and your video didn't disappoint. I realized I knew almost nothing (including the phone stabilizer thingy was called a gimbal 😂). Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience ❤

omg UA-cam algo sucks! This video is a gold mine! Idk why I am recommended cringy TikTok videos rather than something amazing like this. Thank you!!!!!
Not any regrets for the length of the video. Very valuable. At times, I said I knew that, then you told me something I had forgotten. Not an unfamiliar thing for an older person. I remember back in 1968, an 8mm system became available that would sync the image with audio on a cassette recorder. As a student, beyond my means, but I did think about how I would use the kit to make a film. Never persued it. But in the back of my mind, … . This, and my new OM4 might result in something. Maybe, “They Came For Easter Dinner”. Starring my granddaughter. Have a whole month to plan it. Excuse me, have work to do … .
This is so great! I felt like being in a Film 101 class with all the main takeaways condensed into 50 minutes 😊 Exceptionally high actual-content-per-minute ratio, much higher than usual on UA-cam!
Hi Simon, it's quite interesting to follow your video on UA-cam regarding filmmaking utilizing smartphones. You seem to master very well the limits of the gadgets, but that is exactly what makes your explanation reasonable and plausible. Thank you very much.
That was quite an extensive video. I learn something new from each of your videos. And now I will have to rewatch the guide on how to film two people again. Thank you Mr. Simon.

What a FANTASTIC video! Thank you. I run a music production studio and am a sound engineer. I am looking into smartphone filmmaking as I find it very interesting. I have my Samsung S21+, a smartphone gimbal and a Mavic Mini drone. I want to make a music video for one of my customers but my big personal goal is to make a documentary about the Island of Crete. I hope to film some hiking footage combined with drone footage and some interviews. Do you have a video on this type of film? Where the island is the main character. Thank you 😊
I have found this and your entire channel instrumental in guiding me on my first journey as a director shooting a short film and choosing specifically to shoot on a smartphone. I'll let you know how it goes!!

It is more than i need to get started i suppose, but i would also like to get a gimbal and a decent cage and focus pull system in order to try and use old legacy lenses i have. In that respect i was wondering if you could perhaps make a video on the subject. I mean i have no idea of the crop factor involved trying to fit full frame lenses on such a small sensor, what would the effective focal length of a 50mm be on the iPhone 12 Pro max for instance ? Do the lenses have to be cinema dedicated or can normal photo lenses be used ? I'm sure many of us have similar questions. By the same token could you do a bit about computers and an overview as to what we should aim for in terms of processing power, memory etc. Last time i edited videos in Adobe Premiere Pro (which i found quite intuitive for a beginner by the way), my old iMac mid 2011 could handle 4k clips or it would slow down something terrible when applying a lot of colour grading, transitions and sound effects.
