Two quick comments: First, my sister is changing careers due to layoff at age 57. She has applied to over 100 jobs and has only received two calls for interviews. Cannot get an interview for even a simple job that is well below her qualifications. Second, I am a director for Physician Staff Development. My experience is that people over 50 work harder, show up reliably, and bring less drama. We definitely do not discount for age in my field. The only drawback is that sometimes there is a technology learning curve.

My daughter is 42 years old, raising 3 boys, divorced and has worked with the same company for 20 years. She was trying to just get a part time job in the small town she lives in due to the economy. No one would call her. I told her, quit putting all your education on an application. First application she only listed high school, they called her. Some companies will not hire you past 35 if you have a lot of education and/or experience because they think you will want a large salary. I don't think men have that problem. Kathy Bates who plays on that TV show called Matlock said the truest thing on that show, 'After a certain age, we women become invisible. Nobody pays us any attention.' That is a sad but true statement. I'm in my sixties and we are ignored. When I was in the work force, I would hire an older woman over a younger one because older women know who they are, are more dependable and come with less drama in their lives (most times). And this was when I was young. So even then I knew the value of an older female employee.

I (49) work as an EEO Officer in central Arkansas and recently spoke to a female CFO who was berated by her male superiors for pulling a fan out of her handbag and using it during a meeting. She also regularly receives comments about how cold she keeps her office. Though they always say that the comments are meant as a joke, she feels chastened and humiliated by their comments. To paraphrase one of her statements to me, a man in the workplace can get away with almost anything and it's just a joke but let a menopausal woman get flushed, hot, or visibly frustrated or angry once then your career is over. The fact that this is so true makes me sad - and angry!

Before I say another word, I want to salute you for your work: thank you for all you do for so many. This infuriates me and hits home at the same time. I stuck it out until a break when I could leave the room to get ice water...because there was no way I could remove my blazer in front of my colleagues. KEEP FIGHTING FOR US - You are a modern day warrior!

Hello all! I love your channel, style, and topics you discuss. I'm excited for the mid-life woman weekly series. As a 50 year old teacher, with 24+ years in the profession, I cannot type what I want here. In 2020, we were notified that improper/ negative representation of the district or profession online would result in disciplinary action. Yes, we're seriously censored. Which is why most don't pull back the veil. Thank you, for offering your email for correspondence. I can't wait for the next installment!

I think I understand. In my professional career we were “advised” not to have a presence on certain social media platforms as posts could affect employment and, yes, I do know new hires were vetted via SM. I found that not being on some platforms was more a blessing although having employment jeopardized I’d unsettling.

I am in my late 50’s and am just as infuriated. I see this scenario being played out in society everywhere. As a result, I have started to have this conversation at every table I sit at … my national association, my provincial association, my regulatory body, and on boards I participate on that are outside my direct profession. This is a travesty given the immense amount of expertise that our age group brings to every sector of society. Speak my friends …. Speak loudly …. We need to learn how to leverage every tool at our disposal, especially social media!

I’m 53, live in SW Indiana with my family. I have worked in healthcare for the majority of my career, in various positions from CNA & MA to receptionist to finance to practice manager. I currently work as an authorization benefit specialist and absolutely LOVE what I do. I work very diligently to find out what patients benefits are, whether or not their physician in network, and obtain authorizations for their tests/procedures. That being said, I recently spoke up for myself & requested a review of my workload & requested that I be compensated accordingly. It took 4 months to receive a non-answer answer, and this from a predominantly female workplace. It’s was so incredibly discouraging considering I am a hard worker, loyal to my team and have decades of experience.

Thank you for this discussion! I am 72 and still working as a consultant. I absolutely loved the discussion of what it feels like to be in the workplace as an older woman and the discrimination that we face. KEEP THESE COMING! There is so much more to consider, and I love that you bring data to the discussion with a legal viewpoint. Also loved the section about what to wear to work and remain appropriate. Occasionally I go to a client site, but mostly I am on Zoom. I would love to see a video describing how to look professional and pulled together for Zoom presentations. Keep the content coming! This is a great idea. I am early 50''s and working in CAD design at the one of the big three. A mostly male environment. Which is fine. I enjoy that playing field. But, yes there are issues I have, that my husband doesn't have in this same field. Talking about them would be great. We were asked over a year a ago to come back into the office a couple days a week. This scared me to death. I have been in the industry since my 20's. Back then it was short skirts and liquid lunches. Now being 50 scared me. What do I wear to look professional? This channel and many others have helped. I have found the style I am most attracted to is "Quite Luxury/Old Money". Which I am not money. I just like that I can wear these clothes without being trendy. I will always look stylish. Love the channnel! Looking forward to Monday's. ❤

Hi from Southern Norway. I stopped working when I was 65. Worked with HR in a private, international company for many years, and for the last 10 years as HR Manager in the company. Recruitment was part of my area of responsibility. So I very well recognize the problem with managers not wanting to hire "older" job seekers. I was shocked when, many years ago, I read that one is concidered as a senior after the age of 45, both men and women.

Thank you for speaking up for women, most especially over 50. Due to the expensive economy we have, more older women are working for a long time period. I am 68, a retired nurse. No longer able for that intensive work. I work part time in retail to supplement my retirement income. I like keeping busy. Many need the money to support food, clothing, and housing. It's a shame that jobs don't support hiring older people.

I am 71 retired litigator and you are so right! At age 58 I was forced out of a job after 29 years with a federal agency. . My workload doubled, I was constantly criticized, and it seemed I could do nothing right. Several of my co-workers ( one 65 year old male and 60-something woman, both Harvard Law grads) suffered the same fate. Each of us reluctantly accepted a $25k buy-out rather than risk our mental health. Part of the buy-out program HQ in Washington, D.C., imposed on the local branch offices limited the salary of our replacements to 50% of our salaries. I am sorry to hear that little has changed since I retired in 2011.

Getting to the heart of the matter...it boils down to profit and revenue. Many employers are seeking to reduce headcount costs without a reduction in staff. They do that by focusing on early career employees through hiring and employee development practices. When I graduated from college, most companies were focused on hiring employees with proven experience
And as a young professional I sought out mentors with that experience. That paradigm has shifted. Now companies want "fresh" ideas. As if, experienced proven professionals don't bring creativity and energy to their jobs. This is all wrapped around a culture that mocks instead of revering their elders; where youth is all that is being celebrated, sometimes even the middle-aged as we chase down youth, as it it can really be reclaimed. I don't know the answer but appreciate the conversation and acknowledgement of the issue.

    • @midlifeposhcloset
      @midlifeposhcloset  19 днів тому

You have touched on the cultural problem we face: our society worships youth. (I lived in Japan in my younger years where their culture respects the wisdom of their elders.) With 60ish year old men, the problem is generally that they make too much money for the position that they are in and the companies can hire a twenty-something to do the work for much less money. But the same is not true for women as we generally make less than our male counterparts. It is up to us to educate corporate America that our years of experience are valuable to the company's bottom line. I recently spoke to a mid-50's woman who was able to show her board where the company was missing out on over $100,000 in monthly recurring revenue...and solidified a promotion for herself. Made my day!

I'm 60 and retired from working as an RN for over 24 years. I was lucky enough to retire when I was 50. Before that though, I couldn't even get an interview for over 8 months when I moved to a new city. I finally did but it was not in my area of expertise. I'm sure it was because they'd have to pay a seasoned RN much more than a new grad RN. It's infuriating. There is another RN speaking out on her UA-cam channel about her being fired for no reason other than to be replaced by a younger person. Looking forward to you new weekly series.

Just retired this year at 2 months shy of 65. Practice operations supervisor at a children's hospital in Atlanta. Felt the pressure to retire strongly the past 2 years. Sadly, watched my previous physician boss, a tremendously intelligent man who became the CMO there, being pushed out and eye rolled about many times. 10 years ago he was highly esteemed, now people rolling their eyes behind his back by people not even worthy to serve him coffee. Really raises my eire every time I think about it.

I am Greek in 2015 our economy was destroyed. Many people men and women lost their job. I was working in a bank I am one of those. Many of us we retired from age 50,we missed the better salaries but I can say that we missed the toxic work enviroment.I learned how to cook,I appreciate a nice walk in a park. I have a quality in my life,I can say that the money that I earned when I got a job didnt offer to me.

Thank you for sharing! I have been hearing about this phenomenon, and it is egregious violation of discrimination laws.
I am clinical Psychotherapist, and work from home. I get dressed up because I found it helps my mental health, self esteem, helps me feel good about myself. I enjoy your videos, and get inspired to continue to wear business casual attire, and sometimes I get dressed up professionally for myself.
    Also,
I was in the legal field for 20 years as a litigation paralegal, and changed careers. It is a male dominated career, which is okay, however, I witnessed female attorneys and female paralegals being treated differently than their male counter parts. Specifically, working moms, little flexibility in their schedules, expectations to work crazy insane hours, women being passed up for promotions in some instances.
I look forward to your post next Monday.

All true. So much so that the American Bar Association has a committee addressing why women are leaving the practice of law in droves.

I retired at 52. My daughters are both CPA’s and they told me that they would never hire me for a job because I’m too old. I was 58 when they told me this. Apparently, older people aren’t computer savvy or experts with excel.

I’ll be here on Mondays. Although I am no longer working as in paid employment the topic has been of great interest for years. My next comment may decisively put me into the “too old” category but I’m feeling a very slippery slope with the direction we are heading utilizing AI and not just from the employment aspect. 🤗

I am actually speaking on the benefits and pitfalls of AI in the coming year. It is both exciting and frightening at the same time...so I guess that is why I am so intrigued by it.

I think it would be awesome if employers encouraged women to work, drop out, drop back in. In my perfect world, women would work when they are young, drop out to have a family and then take courses to get back up to speed to return to work later in life. Instead we have an unrealistic model that is work, have a family and work, work yourself to a frazzle, burn out , drop out, be left out.

WOW do I love the sound of this!!! One of the things I love the most about being affiliated with @shopLTK is that it is a company established by a woman and run by women FOR WOMEN. Their employees get a full six months of paid maternity leave.

I bought two pairs as well, will get navy and tan. Have dried mine delicate and it did not shrink. I worked in retail and retired 15 years ago. Would not have dreamed of leaving my office without my jacket unless maybe wearing a blouse with long sleeves. Showing arms was not considered appropriate. So the dress code in court does not surprise me. When I went to college in the 60s girls could only wear slacks(tailored) to the student union, not to classes. Things may not be ideal for women today and very unfair in some respects. But there were some horror stories back in the 70s when women just started to come into the workforce in large numbers. Women are still considered second class in too many respects and the current stance on controlling women’s bodies should be considered unacceptable by every woman. We couldn’t even pass the equal rights amendment! Why we put up with this, I don’t know.

I am retired after 35 years in the male-dominated securities industry. I loved my career and
this type of video would have been useful while I was still working. Conferences were one of my favorite experiences because I got to network with other professional women.
Towards the end of my career, women over 60 were starting to wear dresses without hosiery . It was not a good look in a professional business setting .
